The return of the Robobus service highlights the successful partnership between the two companies. After a dependable debut last year, the shuttle will run a 2.8-kilometer loop connecting key venues around Roland-Garros daily from May 25 to June 8.
A new addition for this year is a night schedule, operational from 10 p.m. to midnight, thereby enhancing access during periods of low light.

Tony Han, WeRide&#8217;s founder and CEO, emphasized the importance of their continued presence at Roland-Garros and their focus on expanding in Europe.
Patrick Vergelas, Autonomous Mobility Project Manager at Renault Group, highlighted the growing societal acceptance of autonomous transit. &#8220;From Roland-Garros to Barcelona, via Valence, Renault and WeRide demonstrate that autonomous mobility is no longer a promise, but a reality,&#8221; he stated.
This initiative follows WeRide and Renault&#8217;s launch in March 2025 of Europe&#8217;s first fully driverless commercial <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/44041348/werides-robobus-rolls-out-in-france-with-renault-beti-backing-details" rel="noreferrer noopener">Robobus</a> in France&#8217;s Drôme region and a Level-4 autonomous shuttle trial in Barcelona. Powered by WeRide&#8217;s proprietary system, the Robobus operates in nearly 30 cities worldwide, including Singapore, Switzerland, France, and China.
WeRide reported <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/cannabis/25/05/45541961/whats-going-on-with-weride-stock-on-wednesday" rel="noreferrer noopener">$10 million in revenue</a> for the first quarter of 2025, a 1.8% increase year-over-year. Product sales, including robotaxis and robosweepers, rose to $1.3 million. The robotaxi segment grew to 22.3% of total revenue. Gross margin remained steady at 35%.

A share buyback is often a move to boost investor confidence or drive up a company's stock price. In the case of Chinese robotaxi operator&nbsp;WeRide Inc.&nbsp;(WRD.US) the motives deserve closer attention.
Why would a loss-making company battling for pole position in the autonomous driving sector buy up a block of its own shares instead of ploughing the money into research or the rollout of its diverless vehicles?
The U.S.-listed developer of automotive technology recently made three significant announcements. It released&nbsp;<a href="https://ir.weride.ai/news-releases/news-release-details/weride-announces-plan-expand-commercial-robotaxi-services-15">first-quarter earnings</a>, unveiled a $100 million program to buy back its shares, and outlined plans to deepen a partnership with Uber and Tencent to expand its international robotaxi fleet.
WeRide's quarterly revenues rose a modest 1.8% to 72.40 million yuan ($10 million) from the same period a year earlier, despite growing competition in the self-driving sector and the constraints of a weak economy. Robotaxi takings increased to 16.10 million yuan, representing 22.3% of total revenue compared with 11.9% in the year-earlier period. Robotaxis are rapidly becoming WeRide's mainstay business, with the fleet size exceeding 1,200 vehicles in operation for more than a combined 2,000 days in the quarter.
Nonetheless, high R&amp;D costs and rapid expansion left the company spinning its wheels in the red. WeRide narrowed its net loss to 385 million yuan from 468 million yuan in the same quarter of last year. However, the non-IFRS adjusted loss grew from 142 million yuan to 295 million yuan. Notably, R&amp;D spending excluding stock-related expenses jumped 54% to 278 million yuan, one of the biggest drags on profit.
The company was sitting on 4.43 billion yuan in cash and cash equivalents by the end of March, which together with 1.75 billion yuan in financial assets brought total reserves to more than 6 billion yuan. Its finances are robust enough to cover short-term outgoings and strategic spending.
In spite of the losses and heavy expansion costs, the management team still approved a one-year&nbsp;<a href="https://ir.weride.ai/news-releases/news-release-details/weride-inc-announces-us100-million-share-repurchase-program">share repurchase program</a>&nbsp;worth $100 million – an unusual move for a firm that is still getting global market traction.
Tech companies tend to invest their cash in product development, marketing and R&amp;D during their growth stage, rarely returning funds to shareholders via buybacks. Going against that trend, WeRide's decision looks to be a response to a slumping stock price. Since listing in the United States last October, WeRide has seen its share price fall 39% below the IPO level, battered by intensifying competition in the robotaxi industry.
<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Jostling for position</h4>
With dominance still up for grabs in this emerging sector, companies that can command market confidence stand a better chance of clinching collaboration deals that will add fuel to their expansion plans.
WeRide's arch rival&nbsp;Pony AI&nbsp;(PONY.US), not to be outdone, also motored to U.S. IPO late last year, and showcased its state-of-the-art robotaxi fleet on April 23, a day after the end of the lockup for WeRide shares issued to original shareholders. WeRide shares plunged 17% that day, the biggest single-session decline in months.
As WeRide shares ran out of gas, Pony AI's stock has surged 71.58% since the firm's IPO, generating a market cap of $7.32 billion, more than double WeRide's valuation of $2.87 billion. Pony AI is now trading at a price-to-sales (P/S) ratio of around 62 times, clearly taking the lead with investors as WeRide trails behind with a multiple of nearly 47 times.
The two brands are battling it out head to head to dominate China's market for robotaxis equipped with level 4 technology that can carry out most driving tasks without human intervention.
They run overlapping businesses and are competing for capital, collaboration deals and overseas rollout. Both have struck up partnerships with Uber, launched robotaxi businesses in Europe and the Middle East and recently linked up with Tencent Cloud for tech services.
In light of the strategic partnerships with Uber and Tencent, WeRide's share buyback looks more like a bid to grab the spotlight and bolster market sentiment, with tech stocks generally under pressure.
Buying up shares will reduce supply and support stock prices in the short term. A more stable market cap could improve the company's standing with potential strategic investors, improving refinancing prospects. In a sense, WeRide is bidding to regain control of the narrative by sending out positive signals to investors.
However, market reaction was mixed. WeRide's shares soared more than 20% on the day of the announcement but fell back over 10% in the next two sessions. The move delivered a short-term boost but left investors unconvinced about the long-term outlook. Morgan Stanley maintained an "outperform" rating but cut its target price for the stock from $23 to $13 per share, dampening the market mood.
WeRide has not achieved a course correction with its share buyback plan. But the robotaxi race could have many twists and turns. The outcome will ultimately depend on whether WeRide can power ahead with mass rollout and improve its cash flow.

WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WRD#NASDAQ">WRD</a>) shares are trading higher in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">the premarket session on Wednesday</a> following its first-quarter financial results.
The company recorded $10 million in total revenue in the first quarter of 2025, representing a 1.8% increase <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45536827/weride-announces-plan-to-expand-commercial-robotaxi-services-to-15-additional-cities-globally" rel="noreferrer noopener">on a year-over-year basis</a>.

WeRide&#8217;s robotaxi business reached $2.2 million in the first quarter, 22.3% of total revenue, up from 11.9% in the year-ago period.
The gross profit margin was 35% in the quarter under review, relatively stable compared to the fourth quarter of 2024.

WeRide reported a quarterly&nbsp;diluted net loss per ADS of 18 cents. As of March 31, the company had $610.3 million in cash and equivalents, $240.80 million in financial assets and $2 million in restricted cash, totaling $853.10 million in cash reserve.
In a separate release, the company has authorized a share repurchase program, under which it may repurchase up to $100 million of its Class A ordinary <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45536826/weride-inc-announces-us-100-million-share-repurchase-program" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shares over the next 12 months</a>.
&#8220;The adoption of the share repurchase program reflects our confidence in our business fundamentals, financial health, and long-term outlook,&#8221; Li added.
The company expects to fund the repurchases out of its existing cash balance.
WeRide said it increased its total fleet size to over 1,200 units in the first quarter of 2025. It accumulated more than 2,000 days in public operations with zero regulatory discipline for autonomous driving system failure.
WeRide and Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) have recently formed a significant partnership to expand commercial robotaxi services. This collaboration aims to introduce services to 15 new cities, building on their successful deployment in Abu Dhabi and upcoming launch in Dubai. Uber has committed an additional $100 million equity investment in WeRide, supplementing its previous investments, the company said.

U.S. stocks were higher, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 500 points on Tuesday.
Shares of MAC Copper Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTAL#NYSE">MTAL</a>) rose sharply during Tuesday's session after the company announced Harmony Gold will acquire them for $1.03 billion.
MAC Copper shares jumped 19.9% to $12.17 on Tuesday.

On the economic front, initial jobless claims remained steady, U.S. retail sales saw a modest 0.1% monthly increase in April, and U.S. producer prices unexpectedly declined by 0.5% in April.
The Dow Jones index advanced 272 points or 0.65% to 42,322.75, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index rose 0.41% to 5,916.93. Nasdaq Composite ended 0.18% lower at 19,112.32, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, ended 0.52% higher at 2,094.69.

Insights From Analysts:
Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research said in his QuickTakes note that Fed Chair Powell &#8220;poked a stick&#8221; at the White House following his speech on Thursday.
Yardeni pointed out that Powell implied that the bond yields might stay elevated as a result of more frequent &#8220;supply shocks,&#8221; like tariffs.
&#8220;Higher real rates may also reflect the possibility that inflation could be more volatile going forward than in the inter-crisis period of the 2010s,&#8221; Powell said in prepared remarks for the Thomas Laubach Research Conference in Washington, D.C.
Yardeni said, &#8220;Sounds like Powell is expecting more frequent bouts of stagflation, which was associated with supply shocks in the past.&#8221;
&#8220;The stock and bond markets didn&#8217;t react much to the speech partly because today&#8217;s batch of indicators were mostly ambiguous about the near-term prospects for stagflation,&#8221; he added.
As the PPI declined in April, Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates said, &#8220;The PPI demonstrated that despite recent trade chaos, wholesale prices are falling from lackluster economic activity and surplus goods that have been &#8216;dumped&#8217; in the U.S.&#8221;
Meanwhile, commenting on the declining PPI, Jamie Cox, the managing partner at Harris Financial Group, added, &#8220;If you are in the stagflation camp, these data aren't confirming your thesis. While growth is slowing, disinflation remains intact.&#8221;
Speaking about the S&amp;P 500 earnings so far, Navellier said, &#8220;Now that 90% of the companies in the S&amp;P 500 have announced their first quarter results, earnings are running at an 11.2% annual pace, which represents the seventh straight quarter of improving earnings growth.&#8221;

Gold Spot US Dollar fell 0.96% to hover around $3,208.84 per ounce. Its last record high stood at $3,500.33 per ounce. The U.S. Dollar Index spot was lower by 0.19% at the 100.6880 level.
Asian markets ended lower on Friday except South Korea's Kospi and Australia's ASX 200 index. Japan's Nikkei 225, Hong Kong's Hang Seng, India's S&amp;P BSE Sensex, and China&#8217;s CSI 300 indices declined. European markets were higher in early trade.

Wall Street Poised To Open Higher After S&P 500's 4-Day Run: 'Sounds Like Powell Is Expecting More Frequent Bouts Of Stagflation,' Cautions Expert (CORRECTED)

WeRide Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WRD#NASDAQ">WRD</a>) shares are trading higher premarket on Friday after the company disclosed the commencement of fully driverless Robotaxi trial operations in Abu Dhabi – the first such <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45461114/weride-launches-fully-driverless-robotaxi-trial-operations-in-abu-dhabi-broadens-service-coverage" rel="noreferrer noopener">deployment in the Middle East</a>.
Beginning this quarter, a fleet of WeRide&#8217;s autonomous taxis will be tested on public roads without a safety driver, representing a significant step forward in the development of intelligent transportation in Abu Dhabi.
As part of this expansion, WeRide will also extend its Robotaxi service area to two high-traffic islands in Abu Dhabi: Al Maryah Island and Al Reem Island.

These new service zones add to WeRide&#8217;s existing Robotaxi network, which has been safely operating on Yas Island, Saadiyat Island, and routes to Zayed International Airport since 2021.
Commercial driverless rides and more service areas in Abu Dhabi will progressively launch from summer 2025, pending regulatory approval.
Notably, WeRide is accelerating global expansion, prioritizing the UAE for autonomous driving growth. The company holds the record for the UAE&#8217;s first nationwide self-driving license (July 2023).
Earlier this month, WeRide and Uber Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) announced an expanded partnership to add 15 cities to their autonomous vehicle <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/contracts/25/05/45210244/weride-stock-surges-after-hours-whats-driving-the-action" rel="noreferrer noopener">expansion plans over five years</a>.
On May 14, 2025, the company also announced the establishment of China&#8217;s first 24-hour autonomous ride-hailing network with the introduction of eight autonomous robotaxi pilot <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/05/45409856/whats-going-on-with-weride-stock" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">operation routes in central Guangzhou</a>.
