Oppenheimer also highlighted that the new U.S.-UK trade agreement contributes to a more constructive global growth outlook and has mitigated fears of long-term economic damage from the April drawdown.
He added that the market has begun to price out recession risks. 
"Certainly, recent news has been supportive for risk in three respects: it has shown the U.S. Administration to be pragmatic and keen to de-escalate&#8230; it suggests a lower likely outcome for the average effective tariff rate&#8230; and it has led to a number of growth upgrades," he said.
Rick Gardner, chief investment officer at RGA Investments, said markets are already "pricing in an environment where the U.S. and China are able to trade with each other," even if some economic weakness persists.
"Even if we see a continued economic slowdown, the stock market may have already priced that in during the April selloff," Gardner said.

More than 20 S&amp;P 500 stocks are still trading over 20% below their 200-day moving averages, highlighting substantial technical room for recovery among the index's biggest underperformers during the tariff-relief rally.

Only Half Of S&P 500 Stocks Joined The Tariff-Relief Rally: Time To Buy The Laggards?

Shares of energy stocks are trading higher amid a rise in the price of oil after the US and China agreed to a temporary reduction in most tariffs. The commodity may be experiencing strength amid escalating conflict between Pakistan and India.

Crude prices fell sharply after OPEC+ surprised markets with a bigger-than-expected production hike. This prompted Goldman Sachs to slash its oil price outlook and triggered a selloff <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/energy-stocks-pre-market-movers">in U.S. energy stocks.</a>
In a note shared Monday, Goldman Sachs commodity analyst Daan Struyven said the bank lowered its oil price forecast by $2 to $3, projecting Brent and WTI to average $60 and $56, respectively, for the rest of 2025, and $56 and $52 in 2026. 
"Our key conviction remains that high spare capacity and high recession risk skew the risks to oil prices to the downside despite relatively tight spot fundamentals," Struyven said. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What Prompted The Oil Selloff?</h3>
West Texas Intermediate futures opened at $55.36 per barrel Sunday evening in New York before recovering slightly to $57.10 by early Monday morning.
The drop was fueled by OPEC+'s Saturday decision to increase production by 411,000 barrels per day starting in June, a level in line with Goldman's base-case scenario. 
According to the note, the move likely reflects a combination of low oil inventories due to underproduction in Venezuela and the U.S. shale patch, as well as a push to bring laggard members like Iraq and Kazakhstan back in line with output targets. 
"The new baseline size of production increases is likely 0.41mb/d (million barrels per day)," Goldman said, projecting another similar hike in July.
Reuters reported that five OPEC+ sources suggested additional 411,000 bpd increases in August, September and October could follow if compliance issues persist. Although not confirmed by official OPEC channels, the market appeared to take this guidance seriously.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Brent Could Slide To $40 by 2026 In Bearish Scenario</h3>
Goldman models a steep downside scenario if production continues ramping while the economy slows. 
If the 2.2 million barrels per day in cuts are fully reversed through 0.41 mb/d monthly hikes, Brent crude could drop to the high $40s by late 2026 and WTI to the mid-$40s.
In a global recession, Brent could plunge to $40 and WTI to the high $30s.
While this outcome is less likely, Goldman said, the risk profile is skewed toward the downside given ample spare capacity and the possibility of further supply increases.
Despite this bearish tilt, the bank still recommends hedging downside risk using structured options strategies. It maintains a June 2026 Brent three-way position: selling a $75 call to fund a 55/45 put spread.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Energy Stocks Drop As Crude Slides</h3>
The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) fell 1.3% Monday as oil stocks responded swiftly to the OPEC+ announcement.
Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) dropped 1.9% and 1.7%, respectively.
APA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APA#NASDAQ">APA</a>), ONEOK, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OKE#NYSE">OKE</a>), and Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>) each fell by about 3%.

Shares of energy stocks are trading lower amid a drop in oil and natural gas prices following a decline in US Q1 GDP, which could weigh on demand outlook.

So much for &#8220;drill, baby, drill.&#8221; <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/energy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The energy sector</a> is drilling all right &#8211; straight into red territory.
Down a bruising 11.47% over the past month, Energy, as tracked by the SPDR Energy Select ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), has officially become the worst-performing sector in the S&amp;P 500. And investors have Donald Trump's tariffs &#8211; and falling oil prices &#8211; to thank.
For perspective, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) is down just 0.91% over the past month.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Chevron, Halliburton, Occidental Down Over 15%</h2>
While the broader market treaded water, energy names went into free fall. Chevron Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) shed over 16.73% this month, Halliburton Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HAL#NYSE">HAL</a>) crashed 19.16% and Occidental Petroleum Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>) nosedived 18.25%.
APA Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APA#NASDAQ">APA</a>) is off a staggering 22.74%. Even shale poster child Devon Energy Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DVN#NYSE">DVN</a>) fell 16.31%. The carnage is deep and widespread.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Brutal Blow To Trump&#8217;s Energy Dominance Agenda</h2>
The culprit? A toxic mix of plummeting crude prices &#8211; U.S. oil has slid below $65 &#8211; and trade policy uncertainty. Tariffs are rattling supply chains and investor confidence. Oilfield giants like Baker Hughes, SLB, and Halliburton have already warned of slowing investment in exploration and drilling, forecasting double-digit drops in North American activity, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/04/29/oil-companies-that-trump-wants-to-drill-baby-drill-take-a-beating.html">reported</a> CNBC. 
And they're not shy about pointing fingers. "Tariffs are causing economic uncertainty," Schlumberger NV's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLB#NYSE">SLB</a>) CEO Olivier Le Peuch said last week. Baker Hughes Co (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BKR#NASDAQ">BKR</a>) added that rising tariffs could slice as much as $200 million from earnings.
It's a brutal blow to Trump's energy dominance agenda, which had sought to unleash America's oil might.
But with investors now prioritizing capital discipline and waiting for clearer policy signals, that plan might be on pause. As one American Petroleum Institute analyst put it, the industry's most-used word lately? "Uncertainty." For now, it's the one thing Trump's energy push is producing in abundance.
