Barrick Gold Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>), the world's second-largest gold producer, might change its name. Management proposed rebranding as Barrick Mining Corporation to reflect its broader mining focus.
They also laid out an ambitious plan to grow their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/gold" rel="noreferrer noopener">gold equivalent production</a> by 30% by the end of this decade.
"We are proposing to change our name from Barrick Gold Corporation to Barrick Mining Corporation to reflect the company's changing production profile," the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.barrick.com/English/news/news-details/2025/future-focused-barrick-sets-sights-on-30-percent-production-growth-by-2030/default.aspx" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> in a press release.

"Operating cash flow increased by 20%, and free cash flow has doubled compared to 2023," he highlighted.
Thornton outlined a path to sustainable growth by developing projects organically and achieving operational excellence. Alongside Reko Diq and Lumwana, Barrick is ramping up operations at Pueblo Viejo, moving forward with prefeasibility work at Fourmile, and has restarted activities at Porgera. These efforts are expected to enhance the company's production and profitability well into the next decade.
Despite optimistic metal prices, mining stocks have lagged, and Barrick is no exception. Spot gold price is up about 15% year-to-date, while Barrick gained 10.64%.
"We see our equity as undervalued and repurchased $498 million in shares in 2024. We plan to continue buybacks whenever shares are trading below their intrinsic value," Thornton noted, pointing to the firm's industry-leading balance sheet, strong liquidity, and portfolio of Tier 1 assets as principal advantages that can deliver the touted 30% growth.
To strengthen management, Barrick also announced the nomination of two new directors: former Shell CEO Ben van Beurden and Metso President Pekka Vauramo. These appointments will enhance the board's global mining and energy expertise.

Nutanix Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NTNX#NASDAQ">NTNX</a>): The cloud software company saw increased interest from readers during the week. 
In February, Nutanix<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/44007219/nutanix-q2-revenue-rises-16-margins-expand-as-cloud-business-gains-momentum"> reported second-quarter results</a> that included revenue up 16% year-over-year and earnings per share of 56 cents. Both figures beat analyst estimates and led to several analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/NTNX/analyst-ratings">raising their price targets </a>on the stock. Nutanix also raised its full-year revenue, operating margin and free cash flow estimates. The company will <a href="https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2025/04/03/3055224/0/en/Nutanix-Announces-2025-NEXT-Event-Lineup-Shape-the-Next-Era-of-AI-Cloud-Native-and-Hybrid-Multicloud-Innovation.html">host </a>the NEXT 2025 event covering sectors like AI and the cloud from May 7 to May 9.

Analysts expect earnings per share and revenue to increase from last year's first quarter. Xylem beat analyst estimates for earnings per share in the fourth quarter and has beaten estimates in eight of the past 10 quarters overall. The company has beaten analyst revenue estimates in eight of the past 10 quarters.

Trump's administration has decided to back one of the key projects initiated by former President Joe Biden: the Lobito Corridor.
The transcontinental railway aims to link the resource-rich areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Zambia to Angola's Atlantic port of Lobito. This project would fortify the West's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43492445/critical-metal-demand-to-triple-by-2030-but-demographics-pose-risks" rel="noreferrer noopener">critical minerals supply chain</a>, shifting the regional export preference toward the Atlantic.
James Story, the U.S. chargé d'affaires and acting ambassador to Angola, clarified America's dedication to the project while leading a diplomatic tour along the 835-mile rail line.
"We are here to show our commitment to these projects. We will continue working with our partners," he said to reporters, according <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-03/trump-administration-backs-african-lobito-rail-plan-envoy-says?srnd=phx-markets" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> Bloomberg's report.
The Lobito Corridor is a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/02/37074505/african-rail-projects-become-battleground-for-us-china-competition-in-strategic-mineral-suppl" rel="noreferrer noopener">collaborative effort</a> involving the U.S., the European Union, and a group of private sector partners led by the commodities giant Trafigura.
Together, they plan to upgrade and expand the railway network to boost exports of copper and cobalt—key minerals needed for electric vehicles, AI data centers, and the global energy transition.
President Biden had promoted the corridor as part of a fresh approach to U.S.-Africa relations, focusing on commercial partnerships instead of traditional aid.
His administration had pledged nearly $4 billion for infrastructure, mining, and agriculture projects along the route. Although a hurricane delayed his only trip to Africa, Biden visited Angola in December, marking his <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/emerging-markets/24/10/41416913/bidens-farewell-to-africa-strategic-motives-behind-first-and-only-presidential-visit" rel="noreferrer noopener">first and last visit to the continent</a>, cementing the project's importance in his foreign policy legacy.
The fresh endorsement from Trump's administration hints at an investment-driven diplomacy in Africa. Despite the tariffs affecting Angola, Zambia, and the DRC, the White House made it clear that there are exemptions for essential minerals.
Adam Cortese, the CEO of U.S.-backed solar company Sun Africa, is optimistic about this trend. "There definitely seems to be a growing push for the U.S. to compete more with China," he said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/02/world/africa/trump-angola-lobito-corridor.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">for</a> the New York Times, pointing to the increasing interest in backing American businesses in Africa.
The Lobito Corridor is also part of a larger strategy for the U.S. in the region. Zambia is ramping up copper production, targeting <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/04/38115830/zambia-mining-boom-the-road-to-1-million-tons-of-copper" rel="noreferrer noopener">one million tons</a>, led by large foreign firms like First Quantum Minerals (OTCPK: FQVLF), Barrick (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>), and Glencore (OTCPK: GLCNF).&nbsp;&nbsp;
Meanwhile, discussions are underway for multibillion-dollar investments in the DRC's mining, and officials are investigating a possible <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44216408/dr-congo-explores-a-minerals-for-security-deal-with-the-us" rel="noreferrer noopener">minerals-for-security deal</a> amid ongoing conflicts.

Trump's Administration Backs Biden's Legacy Project To Secure African Resources

BofA Securities analyst Lawson Winder discussed the performance of gold price last week and where it is headed.
Gold prices have exceeded the analyst&#8217;s long-term target of $3,000 per ounce, with the analyst suggesting a potential rise to $3,500 if investment demand grows by 10%.
China&#8217;s insurance sector could allocate up to 1% of its assets to gold, representing about 6% of the annual gold market. Central banks, currently holding around 10% of their reserves in gold, might increase that to over 30% for portfolio efficiency.
Retail investors are also showing increased interest, with physically backed gold ETFs seeing a 4% year-over-year rise across major regions.
Additionally, potential trade policy uncertainty and a weaker U.S. dollar could further drive gold prices higher. A rebalancing of U.S. deficits may also create a bullish outlook for gold, noted the analyst.

On March 27, gold surged to a record $3,060/oz after Trump announced a 25% tariff on all imported passenger vehicles not made in the U.S.
The rally continued on March 28, reaching $3,087/oz, fueled by a higher-than-expected Personal Consumption Expenditure (PCE) index report, the Federal Reserve&#8217;s preferred inflation measure.
Gold closed the week up 2.1% at $3,085/oz, while major gold equity indices also gained: S&amp;P/TSX Global Gold Index: +1.9%, Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index: +1.4%, NYSE Arca Gold Bugs Index: +2.0%
All North American gold producers under the analyst&#8217;s coverage have released their year-end 2024 gold reserves, with Eldorado Gold Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EGO#NYSE">EGO</a>) reporting as of September 30 and Pan American Silver Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAAS#NYSE">PAAS</a>) as of June 30.
While most companies have also provided 2025 production guidance, SSR Mining Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSRM#NASDAQ">SSRM</a>) has yet to do so. SSRM has been included in the reserve life analysis using reasonable 2025 production estimates.
The analyst noted the reserve lives are trending higher, but this growth is primarily due to a drop in annual gold production rather than a significant increase in reserves.
In 2024, total gold reserves rose by just 1.4%, while production declined by 8%, noted the analyst.
