Silicon carbide component manufacturer&nbsp;Wolfspeed Inc.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WOLF#NYSE">WOLF</a>) is preparing to file for&nbsp;prepackaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the coming weeks.
What Happened: Facing mounting debt and failed out-of-court restructuring talks with key creditors, the company is reportedly pursuing bankruptcy options, according to a <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/wolfspeed-prepares-to-file-for-bankruptcy-within-weeks-7bd98040">report</a> from the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the matter.
The company, which was expected to benefit from U.S. government efforts to expand domestic semiconductor production through the 2022 CHIPS Act, has struggled to address its $6.5 billion debt, including a $575 million balloon payment due in May 2026.

Wolfspeed is aiming for a bankruptcy plan that would have the support of the majority of its creditors. This comes after rejecting a debtholder restructuring deal in March, following pushback from Apollo Global Management LLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>). 
The deal involved converting some of its convertible debt holdings and loans into equity, which would have diluted Apollo&#8217;s position.
Apollo, which owns $1.5 billion of Wolfspeed&#8217;s debt, sits on top of the company&#8217;s credit stack and has the right to approve any new secured financing deal. It also has a make-whole provision in its agreement, which essentially shields the PE firm from losses in the event of a bankruptcy, according <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/895419/000119312523174504/d462549d8k.htm">to</a> Wolfspeed&#8217;s SEC filings. 
Wolfspeed had previously said it was exploring restructuring or bankruptcy options after difficulties refinancing its debt threatened its ability to access up to $750 million in taxpayer funds through the CHIPS Act. That funding was contingent on the successful refinancing of convertible notes maturing in 2026, 2028, and 2029.
Both Wolfspeed and Apollo have yet to respond to Benzinga&#8217;s requests for a comment on this matter. The story will be updated once we hear back.
Why It Matters: During its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/05/45303071/wolfspeed-stock-slides-after-q3-revenues-miss-estimates-heres-what-to-know">third quarter results</a> two weeks ago, Wolfspeed outlined plans to strengthen its capital structure and improve its path to profitability.
The company recently hired an ex-Micron executive, Robert Feurle, as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44515658/wolfspeed-names-ex-micron-exec-feurle-as-ceo-to-revive-struggling-chipmaker">its new CEO</a>, who comes with several decades of semiconductor experience, to help in its turnaround efforts.
Price Action: Wolfspeed&#8217;s shares were down 10.32% on Tuesday, ending the day at $3.13 per share, and are down 60.38% after hours. The stock is down 52.79% year-to-date.

Wolfspeed Reportedly Prepping Bankruptcy Filing After Snubbing Debt Deals, Buckling Under $6.5 Billion Burden—Stock Plunges Over 60%

I got into the investment business on a steady diet of Graham and Whitman. But that was the 1980s and early 1990s – the golden age of dealmakers and junk bonds, leveraged buyouts and greenmail. 
Long before the players became gentlemanly private equity titans and activist investors, they were raiders, vultures, and even, in one famous book about the RJR deal, barbarians.
Legendary fortunes were made, reputations created and shattered.
All of these high-return, high-flying strategies shared a common thread. Leveraged buyouts, distressed investing and risk arb were all just variations on the value investing theme.
The private equity giants of today are still doing this. Thanks to their quarterly filings, you can copy their investment approach—a strategy that has beaten the markets 4-to-1 since 2001.
Even the creation of the junk bond market was based on Michael Milken&#8217;s studies on the returns from buying undervalued lower-rated bonds, a strategy founded on basic value investing principles.
The big winners in all these strategies took value investing and added debt.
It was like adding nitro to the tank of a stock car. If you could control the vehicle at high speed through the corners, there was no race you couldn&#8217;t win.
Although the golden age of risk arb and the smaller investors&#8217; ability to compete in distressed debt are all behind us, we can still use the combination of debt and value investing to beat the index by a wide margin.
When the 13F filings come out every quarter, most of the short-attention-spans in the market today head for the same filings at the same time.
Warren, Cathie, Stanley, Tepper and Seth still get all the attention.
I may get around to those at some point, but one of the first places I turn is to the leading private equity firms.
Firms like Apollo Global Management (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>), Blackstone (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BX#NYSE">BX</a>) and KKR (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KKR#NYSE">KKR</a>) still use basic principles of value investing along with a healthy dose of debt to drive massive returns for themselves and their investors.
What most people do not realize is that these firms also have large public securities portfolios, and stealing their ideas has created some massive market-beating opportunities.
If you had bought shares of Mr. Cooper (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COOP#NASDAQ">COOP</a>) when it first appeared in KKR&#8217;s public portfolio in 2018, you could have made almost ten times your money.

The current top ten holdings for KKR are:
BrightSpring Health Services (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BTSG#NASDAQ">BTSG</a>) provides home and community-based health services to complex patients, positioning itself in a niche with long-term demographic tailwinds. The company is newly public and pursuing scale through both organic growth and targeted acquisitions in behavioral and specialty pharmacy segments.
Henry Schein (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HSIC#NASDAQ">HSIC</a>) is a global distributor of dental and medical supplies primarily serving small- and mid-sized practices. The company generates stable cash flow and has a long history of disciplined capital deployment, though growth is modest and sensitive to procedure volume trends.
BrightView (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BV#NYSE">BV</a>) is the largest commercial landscaping services provider in the U.S., with recurring maintenance revenue making up the majority of its business. Under new leadership, the firm is undergoing a restructuring push to improve margins and reduce debt after years of underperformance.

Activist investor&nbsp;Dan&nbsp;Loeb‘s&nbsp;Third Point LLC&nbsp;has exponentially boosted its investment in Apollo Global Management, Inc. Loeb's Third Point Boosts Apollo Stake 275%, Soho House 121% In Q1 Bet

Amid tariff concerns, activist investor Dan Loeb‘s Third Point LLC made significant changes, shedding stakes or exiting major Magnificent Seven stocks <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/dan-loeb">during the first quarter of 2025</a>.
What Happened: A 13F <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514625003337/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml">filing </a>released Thursday shows that Third Point completely exited its positions in Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) during the first quarter of 2025. The hedge fund had <a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514625001713/xslForm13F_X02/infotable.xml">previously </a>held 665,000 shares of Meta and 500,000 shares of Tesla at the end of the fourth quarter of 2024.

Wall Street Eyes 9th Straight Day Of Gains, Apple Falls As Chinese Sales Disappoint: What's Driving Markets Friday?

U.S. stock futures are in the green early Friday, after another winning day for the markets in the regular session on Thursday.
What Happened: The futures markets continue to inch higher following fresh signals from China that it is open to begin trade negotiations with Washington after weeks of stonewalling.
Strong earnings performance by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>),&nbsp;Amazon.com Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), and Airbnb Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABNB#NASDAQ">ABNB</a>), amid growing trade, tariff, and geopolitical headwinds, helped lift investor sentiments following weeks of turbulence and uncertainties.
On Friday, investors will be closely watching the earnings of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BRK#NYSE">BRK</a>), Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>), and Apollo Global Management Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>), among several others.
U.S. 10-Year Treasuries are at 4.20%, while the 2-Year Treasuries are at 3.69%. The CME Group's FedWatch&nbsp;<a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">tool</a>&nbsp;shows the markets pricing a 93.2% likelihood of interest rates remaining unchanged during the FOMC meeting that is scheduled to take place the first week of May, which marks a decrease from 95% on Thursday.

Cues From Last Session: The markets were upbeat on Thursday, with most S&amp;P 500 sectors in the green, with tech and consumer discretionary sectors leading the charge. Healthcare, however, witnessed a steep decline, down 2.73% during the day, owing to the 11.66% pullback in Eli Lilly And Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>), following its first quarter earnings. The S&amp;P 500 itself was up 0.63% during the day, closing at 5,604.14, followed by the Nasdaq Composite at 17,710.74, up 1.52%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average at 40,752.96, up 0.21%, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, which was up 0.60%, closing at 1,975.86. Initial jobless claims at 241,000 came in significantly higher than the median forecast of 225,000, which soured sentiments during the day. As of Thursday, the Nasdaq 100 index was down 10.96% from its previous high of 22,222.61 points. The S&amp;P 500 index was 8.83% lower, as compared to the last record high of 6,147.43 points. Insights From Analysts:
According to analyst Seth Golden, a chief market strategist at the Finom Group, the S&amp;P 500 having retraced 50% of the bear market at closing on Thursday, points towards the markets going to their all-time high.
Golden says, &#8220;Since 1956, when this occurred, the index went on to all-time highs and was higher 12 months forward 100% of the time.&#8221;

The only time this didn&#8217;t happen, says Golden, was in 2022, when Fed Chair Jerome Powell made his infamous &#8220;more pain to come&#8221; speech, leading to steeper declines in the market.

Analysts expect the company to report $4.72 per share in earnings, on $81.59 billion in revenue. </li>
<li>Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) will be releasing its earnings at 9:30 AM, with analysts expecting $1.73 per share earnings, on $86.1 billion in revenue. The stock is up 0.87% pre-market. </li>
<li>Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) is scheduled to announce its first quarter earnings by 11:00 AM, with consensus estimates pegging its earnings at $2.15 per share, on $48.4 billion in revenue. The stock is up 0.66% pre-market. </li>
<li>The Cigna Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CI#NYSE">CI</a>) will be releasing its first quarter earnings before markets open at 8:30 AM, with the stock trading up 1.16% pre-market. Analysts expect $6.35 earnings per share, on $60.4 billion in revenue. </li>
<li>Apollo Global Management Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>) is up 1.23% pre-market, with the company expected to release its first quarter earnings before markets open at 8:30 AM. Analysts expect $1.84 in earnings, on $964 million in revenue.</li>

Commodities, Gold And Global Equity Markets:
Crude oil futures are down for the day by 0.65%, trading at $58.87 per barrel, amid growing concerns of a recession and oversupply.
Gold Spot US Dollar has finally broken free from its losing streak, and is up 1.31% on Friday, trading at $3,259.42 per ounce, which is still considerably lower than $3,500.33 per ounce last week. The U.S. Dollar Index is down 0.48%, trading at 99.7175 at the time of writing.
All Asian, Australian, and New Zealand markets are in the green on Friday, barring China&#8217;s Shanghai Index which is marginally lower.

Apollo Global Management (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APO#NYSE">APO</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $1.82 per share which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $1.96 by 7.14 percent.
