US Stocks Likely To Open Lower After A Solid May: 'TACO' Trade And 'Run It Hot' Optimism 'Are Consensus At This Point,' Says Expert

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some decline in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Friday.
U.S. stocks settled mixed on Friday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 50 points during the session after President Donald Trump accused China of &#8220;totally&#8221; breaching a tariff agreement, raising new fears over trade disputes.
Wall Street closed on a positive note last month, with the S&amp;P 500 gaining more than 6.2% in May and the Nasdaq jumping 9.6%. Both indices recorded their strongest months since November 2023. The Dow surged 3.9% for the month.
For the week, the S&amp;P 500 climbed, while the 30-stock Dow climbed 1.6%. The tech-laden Nasdaq, meanwhile, surged 2% last week.
Shares of Dell Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DELL#NYSE">DELL</a>) fell more than 2% on Friday after the company reported mixed financial results for the first quarter. Shares of Ulta Beauty Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ULTA#NASDAQ">ULTA</a>) jumped around 12% after the company reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results and raised guidance.
On the economic data front, the University of Michigan consumer sentiment was revised higher to 52.2 in May versus a preliminary reading of 50.8. The Chicago PMI declined to 40.5 in May versus 44.6 in the previous month.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with energy, consumer discretionary and information technology stocks recording the biggest losses on Friday. However, consumer staples and utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 54 points to 42,270.07 on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.01% to 5,911.69, while the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.32% to 19,113.77 during Friday's session.

Piper Sandler: Ulta Beauty's comp sales grew 2.9% year-on-year to $2,848 million, beating Street expectations of $2,794 million, Wolfmeyer said in a note. The company's brand engagement efforts seem to be "resonating" and proved effective in the quarter, she added.
Management's full-year guidance reflects the stronger first-quarter beat, while also incorporating more uncertainty in the back half of the year, the analyst stated. 
"While it does seem like management is taking a more conservative approach, we appreciate the prudence given the evolving macro backdrop," she further wrote.
Telsey Advisory Group: Ulta Beauty reported earnings of $6.70 per share, beating the consensus estimate of $5.81 per share, despite a challenging consumer environment, Telsey said. Management raised its full-year revenue guidance to $11.5-$11.7 billion, from their prior outlook of $11.5-$11.6 billion, she added.
The company had already indicated that this would be a transitional year, "marked by increased investments to help drive market share gains and long-term profitable growth," the analyst wrote.
ULTA Price Action: Shares of Ulta Beauty had risen by 11.38% to $469.81 at the time of publication on Friday.

Founded in 2022 and named after her middle name (and stylized with a lowercase "r"), the startup owes its hefty price tag to a Gen Z following and $212 million in sales in just the last year. </li>
<li>Acrisure lands a $2.1 billion investment from Bain Capital at a $32 billion valuation. MBK has secured exclusive negotiation rights, beating out Carlyle Group, and plans to proceed via a tender offer at 11,000 yen per share. The same price was previously offered by Nidec in a hostile takeover attempt in April 2025, which was withdrawn in May due to Makino's resistance. The exact scope of MBK's tender offer hasn't been revealed. MBK will finance the acquisition using its sixth blind fund, launched in 2024. Makino, founded in 1937 and headquartered in Tokyo, is a global leader in precision machine tools. </li>

<li>Energy company EOG Resources, Inc. EOG agreed to pay the sellers, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP) and Encino Energy, with cash and debt. The purchase price includes $3.5 billion in new debt and $2.1 billion in cash. The company expects the transaction to close in the latter half of 2025, upon clearance under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act.</li>

<li>Scopely has officially completed its $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic's games business, according <a href="https://mobilegamer.biz/the-3-5bn-scopely-niantic-deal-has-officially-closed/">to</a> Mobile Gamer. The deal brings in over 400 new staff and a blockbuster portfolio that includes &#8220;Pokémon Go&#8221; and Wayfarer apps. The acquired titles collectively attracted more than 30 million monthly active users and generated over $1 billion in revenue last year. Announcing the deal&#8217;s close on May 29, Scopely emphasized its commitment to continuity, stating that longtime Niantic leaders Kei Kawai and Ed Wu will continue to lead the game teams, ensuring stability for Pokémon fans and other titles. Niantic's remaining titles, &#8220;Ingress&#8221; and &#8220;Peridot,&#8221; will remain under the newly formed Niantic Spatial, still led by CEO John Hanke. Scopely's co-CEOs hinted at more acquisitions ahead, noting they evaluated over 800 companies last year.</li>

<li>At Home, a home-goods retailer owned by private equity firm Hellman &amp; Friedman, is preparing to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-27/retailer-at-home-prepares-to-file-for-bankruptcy-in-coming-weeks?sref=TBDibEcD">reported</a> that the company did not make its interest payment on May 15 and entered a forbearance pact with lenders on May 23, citing sources. The reprieve runs through June 30,</li>

<li>All 500 hand-scooped Thrifty Ice Cream counters inside Rite Aid locations are set to close. The beloved brand, founded in 1940, will still be available at some standalone shops and retailers. Rite Aid, which acquired the brand in 1996 and proudly served its signature cylindrical scoops across the West Coast, is now scooping out hundreds of store closures and looking to sell off assets as part of a <a href="https://abc7ny.com/post/rite-aid-stores-closing-drug-store-chain-close-300-more-locations-amid-bankruptcy/16588893/">bankruptcy</a> process, including Thrifty and its El Monte, California-based factory.</li>

<li>Everstream, a business-only fiber network, is selling most of its operations to stalking horse bidder Bluebird Fiber as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy auction. This follows earlier sales of its Illinois and St. Louis networks and plans to exit Pennsylvania. The sale to Bluebird includes most assets and comes with a $55 million lifeline in debtor-in-possession financing. Everstream remains open to better offers.</li>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Notes From The Block</h3>
New data suggests that, after several volatile years, the behavioral health sector is regaining favor among strategic and financial buyers.
In the first quarter, 47 transactions were reported, including 34 mergers and acquisitions. That&#8217;s the highest M&amp;A volume since the fourth quarter of 2022, according to investment banker Kevin Taggart.
In <a href="https://www.mertztaggart.com/post/q1-2025-behavioral-health-m-a-report">a blog post</a> published this week, Taggart explained that renewed interest in the intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and autism segments was a key driver of the momentum. The firm tallied 12 transactions in Q1, the highest level since 2021.
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy providers, in particular, are back in high demand. 
"The dust has seemed to settle" following the pandemic-era wage inflation and a wave of bankruptcies among large ABA providers, Taggart, a managing partner at Mertz Taggart, wrote. That shift has led to heightened buyer interest, especially in the wake of major exits.
The mental health subsector continues to show strong and steady deal flow, too. Twenty-nine transactions (19 M&amp;A and 10 growth investments) were announced in Q1, roughly matching the 30 deals reported in Q4 2024. 
Demand for psychiatric hospitals is particularly robust, though limited supply constrains deal volume. "We've had more groups ask us for psych hospitals since Q1 this year than probably any quarter in the last three or four years," Taggart said. "But there are fewer smaller operators out there."
Taggart also pointed to an ongoing trend: sustained investor appetite for high-valuation growth deals. "Money has continued to pour into these growth deals, which surprised us a bit," he said, signaling continued bullish sentiment across behavioral health verticals.

A strong May for U.S. equities is closing on a sour note, after President Donald Trump accused China of "totally" breaching a tariff agreement, raising new <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/cannabis/25/05/45693219/feds-favorite-inflation-gauge-slows-but-trumps-china-accusation-flips-market-mood">fears over trade disputes.</a>
The White House is reportedly planning broader tech sanctions against China, with a proposed rule targeting companies majority-owned by already-sanctioned firms. According to people familiar with the matter, these firms would face new licensing conditions from the U.S. government, heightening pressure on Beijing. 
Friday&#8217;s economic reports offered mixed signals. Although inflation showed signs of cooling, consumers pulled back on monthly spending, signaling weakening demand. Personal spending growth slowed to 0.2% in April, a sharp deceleration from 0.7% in March.
Meanwhile, Main Street is sending warning signals, as consumer sentiment remained deeply depressed, holding at a three-year low, according to the<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/economic-data/25/05/45697983/consumer-sentiment-stuck-at-3-year-lows-as-inflation-fears-hit-44-year-high"> University of Michigan's final May reading.</a> Moreover, year-ahead inflation expectations jumped to 4.5%, the highest since 1981.
Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) was the worst performer among the mega-cap names, sliding 4% and fully erasing the gains it had notched following Wednesday&#8217;s stronger-than-expected earnings release.
The broader market mirrored the decline. The S&amp;P 500 fell 1% to 5,858 points, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 tumbled 1.3% to 21,100—both marking their lowest levels of the week.
Only defensive sectors such as consumer staples and utilities managed to stay above water, as investors rotated into perceived safe havens amid geopolitical and economic unease.
Crude oil prices declined 1.5% to $60 a barrel amid speculation that OPEC+ could consider a production hike larger than the 410,000 barrels-per-day increase already planned. The group is set to meet Saturday.
Gold, often seen as a haven during market stress, failed to gain traction and dropped 0.9% to trade below $3,300 per ounce.
Cryptocurrency markets also faced headwinds. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) sank below $105,000, hitting its lowest level since May 20.
