The move came as investors responded to news that billionaire investor Bill Ackman's Pershing Square Capital Management <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44838080/hertz-global-stock-soars-after-pershing-square-hops-in-passenger-seat-whats-going-on">significantly increased its stake</a> in Hertz Global Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HTZ#NASDAQ">HTZ</a>).
What To Know: Ackman's firm revealed in a late filing that it had accumulated 12.71 million Hertz shares as of Dec. 31, or 4.1% ownership, but a CNBC report later revealed the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44853443/hertz-stock-accelerates-into-the-close-shares-continue-to-move-higher-after-hours-heres-why">stake had quietly grown to 19.8%</a>, making Pershing Square the second-largest Hertz shareholder. Ackman reportedly secured a confidential treatment provision from the SEC, allowing him to delay disclosure while building the position.
While Avis and Hertz are direct competitors in the rental car space, if tariffs don't affect used cars (<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/04/44853443/hertz-stock-accelerates-into-the-close-shares-continue-to-move-higher-after-hours-heres-why">as is reportedly Ackman's thesis</a>), rental fleets could become a safer asset class, which could generally signal broader confidence in the car rental sector.

The company reported <a target="_blank" href="https://s203.q4cdn.com/888565246/files/doc_financials/2025/q1/STT-1Q25-Earnings-Press-Release-vFinal.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">quarterly </a>earnings per share of $2.04, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.99.
Quarterly sales of $3.28 billion (+4.7% year over year) missed the street view of $3.32 billion.
&#8220;Through broad-based year-over-year fee revenue growth and continued expense discipline, we achieved positive fee and total operating leverage alongside healthy pre-tax margin expansion, all while continuing to return capital to our shareholders,&#8221; said State Street CEO Ron O&#8217;Hanley.

In the quarter under review, State Street returned a total of $320 million of capital to common shareholders, including $100 million of common share repurchases and $220 million (or 76 cents per share) of declared dividends.
Common equity tier 1 ratio at the end of first quarter was 11%, compared with 11.1% a year ago.
O'Hanley noted that investors and the global economy face heightened uncertainty driven by geopolitical tensions and shifting government policies on trade, deficits, taxation, and deregulation.

How To Trade SPY And Top Tech Stocks, As March Housing Starts Fall 11.4%

Shares of Hooker Furnishings Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HOFT#NASDAQ">HOFT</a>) were <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket">trading lower in premarket </a>on Thursday after the fourth-quarter FY25 earnings.
The company reported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g44858894/hooker-furnishings-reports-improved-sales-in-fourth-quarter-additional-planned-cost-savings">fourth-quarter FY25 sales growth of 8%</a> year-on-year to $104.46 million, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $101.16 million.
The additional week in the current period drove the increase, contributing approximately $7.7 million to consolidated net sales.
Segment Revenue: Hooker Branded segment sales climbed 31%, Home Meridian improved 21.7%, and Domestic Upholstery decreased 7%.
EPS of $(0.22) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">missed the consensus</a> estimate of $0.16.
Gross margin contracted by 60 basis points Y/Y to 23.9%. Selling and administrative expenses increased 12% Y/Y to $25.2 million. The company reported an operating loss of $2.7 million in the quarter compared to an operating income of $340,000.

In addition to the $10 million in annualized cost savings announced in fiscal 2025, the company expects additional annualized cost savings of between $8 to $10 million.
Total annualized savings of these two cost-saving plans which will be realized in FY27 is $18 million &#8211; $20 million.
&#8220;While macroeconomic headwinds—including a weak housing market, lower consumer confidence and tariff uncertainty—persist, we remain focused on what we can control. We&#8217;ve accelerated cost reduction initiatives which we believe will improve operating income and cash flow,&#8221; said CEO Jeremy R. Hoff.
&#8220;We are currently evaluating a range of strategies to mitigate the current economic environment, including a 50-year low in existing home sales, and the possible impact of additional reciprocal tariffs on our operations and profitability. MVID and SBS-IF, rare orphan diseases requiring intensive parenteral nutrition and support, have severe morbidity and mortality implications and impact the quality of life of both patients and their caregivers. There are currently no approved drug treatments for MVID. A key value driver would be a reduction in total parenteral nutrition (TPN).
"Patients with MVID and SBS-IF suffer from devastating diarrhea and dehydration caused by these debilitating, lifelong conditions. These patients are frequently on TPN for as long as 20 hours a day, seven days a week - and TPN carries a significant risk of morbidity, including infections, metabolic complications, and liver problems," said Dr. Miqdady, the principal investigator for this study. This ongoing proof-of-concept study is evaluating crofelemer's potential to be safely administered to patients with MVID, SBS-IF, and other CDDs in escalating doses, improve stool formation, improve the absorption of nutrients, and lower TPN needs - which have never been achieved in an MVID patient. The study also provides the opportunity to evaluate whether any potential benefit provided by crofelemer in participating patients ceases after treatment with crofelemer is discontinued.
