Speaking to young founders at Y Combinator's AI Startup School in San Francisco earlier this week, Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) Elon Musk shared raw, humorous and insightful reflections on his early startup journey—and why rejection shaped his mission to build the future.
What Happened: In a fireside chat with Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, Musk revisited his 1995 decision to drop out of Stanford University's PhD program and take a gamble on the internet—then a largely unknown frontier.
Musk admitted he initially didn't intend to start a company—he just wanted a job at Netscape, the leading browser company at the time.
&#8220;I sent my resume into Netscape and [Marc Andreessen] knows about this but I don&#8217;t think he ever saw my resume and then nobody responded,&#8221; he said, adding, &#8220;So, I&#8217;m like man, this is ridiculous, so I&#8217;ll just write software myself and see how it goes.&#8221;

That "see what happens" mindset led to Zip2, Musk's first startup. With no money for rent, he and his co-founder slept in the office and showered at the YMCA. He once also drilled a hole through the floor to access the ISP downstairs.
Though <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/24/11/41703199/when-elon-musk-sold-his-first-company-he-had-a-choice-a-house-or-a-mclaren-f1-heres-how-his-choice-t">Zip2 sold for $300 million</a>, Musk said a key mistake was ceding too much control to investors who didn't understand the internet.
Another lesson that can be derived from his life story is that, rather than doing otherwise, he "kept the chips on the table." Musk put nearly all of his Zip2 money, which Musk said was $20 million, into X.com.
The billionaire said he wanted to build tech without limitations and go directly to consumers.
Musk also noted that today's AI startup valuations are "eye-watering", and while some may succeed, the hype is intense. He sees AI as a potential civilization-scale economic revolution—but also a tsunami compared to the &#8220;trash on the beach&#8221; of current political issues.
He said that politics is all noise, while engineering demands truth. He's now focused again on technology, his &#8220;main quest,&#8221; after what he called a "side quest" of dealing with bureaucracy and fraud in DC.

Amazon-Backed Zoox Launches California Robotaxi Plant: Tesla Rival Targets 10,000 Vehicles A Year

A group of Texas lawmakers has urged Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) to delay its Robotaxi launch in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/06/45876375/elon-musk-says-tesla-robotaxi-rides-begin-june-22-in-austin-full-self-driving-to-enable-home-delivery-by-june-28-were-being-super-paranoid">Austin, scheduled for June 22</a>.
What Happened: In a letter addressed to Elon Musk's electric vehicle giant, lawmakers state that the state's legislature updated its regulations on autonomous vehicles in 2017, which will take effect in September of this year, KXAN reported <a href="https://www.kxan.com/news/local/austin/texas-lawmakers-send-letter-to-tesla-asking-to-delay-robotaxi-rollout-in-austin/">on</a> Wednesday.
"As members of the Austin delegation in the Texas Senate and Texas House of Representatives, we are formally requesting that Tesla delay autonomous robotaxi operations until the new law takes effect on September 1, 2025," the lawmakers said in the letter.
New regulations state that all AV operators transporting passengers or property "must receive prior authorization from the Department of Motor Vehicles before operating on public streets without a human driver," the report suggests.
Regulations suggest that compliance requires all AVs must obey state traffic laws, have registered and titled insurance under Texas law, have recording devices and "a minimal risk condition if the automated driving system is rendered inoperable."
Additionally, AV operators are also required to have a first responder interaction plan in place, highlighting how first responders interact with AVs.
Why It Matters: The news comes in as Tesla was officially named as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/06/45854273/elon-musks-tesla-officially-named-av-operator-in-austin-ahead-of-robotaxi-launch">an AV operator</a> in Austin, ahead of June 22's Robotaxi launch, which Musk says will have over 10 Tesla Model Ys initially.

Tesla Will Shut Down Production At The Texas Gigafactory Over The 4th Of July Weekend

Senate Republicans have released their version of the House of Representatives' tax bill, with the $250 annual fee on EVs removed.
What Happened: The House version of the bill included the $250 fee on EVs as well as a $100 fee on Hybrids. However, Senate Republicans have chosen not to include those in their version, Politico reported <a href="https://www.eenews.net/articles/the-ev-and-hybrid-fee-is-dead-for-now/">on</a> Tuesday.
The report suggested that the Senate version killed the fee, which would've increased annually with inflation because it was "too onerous to execute."
However, the report also says that the senators could try to bring back the fee in some other form.

What Happened: The company took to social media platform X to announce the expansion of its services on Tuesday. "Starting today in SF, with new areas coming to LA later this week," Waymo said in the post.
