The 31-year-old man revealed that he had <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/45738080/57-year-old-inherits-7-million-after-husbands-unexpected-death-suze-orman-tells-her-do-not-touch-this-money-for-at-least-6-months">unexpectedly inherited millions</a> from a man he thought was just a family friend. &#8220;It&#8217;s been a wild week and a half, two weeks for me,&#8221; the caller said.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Learning The Truth After Decades Of Silence</h2>
&#8220;A couple of weeks ago, my mother flew out from California to Nashville to see me in person,&#8221; the caller began. She broke the news that a longtime family friend had passed away and named both her and her son in his will. According to the attorney handling the estate, it was worth somewhere between $10 million and $14 million.

That wasn't the only surprise. &#8220;Now, in the will, he&#8217;s designated me as his son,&#8221; the caller said. He added that he had never met the man, though he had received birthday cards from him every year. When he had asked about the cards growing up, his mother simply said, &#8220;He&#8217;s just a friend of mine. Don&#8217;t worry about it.&#8221;
The truth came out only after the man's death: the family friend was likely his biological father.
&#8220;Every single part of your life is different now than it was this time last week,&#8221; Delony told the caller. &#8220;Any attempt you try to make to &#8216;get back to the way it was&#8217;&#8230; is a choice to be miserable.&#8221;
The caller said he was now helping arrange the funeral because, as the legally recognized next of kin, he had to step in.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Money Is In A Trust</h2>
The inheritance is not a lump sum. Instead, it's in a trust made up mostly of stocks and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/mutual-funds">mutual funds</a>. &#8220;Me and my mom are splitting the dividends, the interest, and whatever income that trust brings in,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;It&#8217;s about, on average, according to the lawyer, about half a million a year.&#8221;
He and his mother will each receive $250,000 annually. When his mother passes away, her portion will transfer to him. When he turns 60, the trust will close and he'll inherit the principal.
Delony advised the caller to hire his own attorney &#8220;before the day is over.&#8221; &#8220;Not this trust, not somebody who was dishonest enough to not come out and tell you that they&#8217;re your father for 30 years, not your mom who did not tell you the truth,&#8221; he said. &#8220;I would have somebody else who is working for you.&#8221;

Kamel jumped in with a list of practical next steps: hiring a lawyer, a therapist, a certified public accountant, an investment professional, an insurance broker, and eventually, a real estate agent. The caller said he currently doesn't own a home.
&#8220;The first thing I would do is nothing,&#8221; Kamel added. &#8220;Just grieve all of this. Feel it all.&#8221;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Hard Truths And Long Roads</h2>
The caller said his mom described the man as someone who &#8220;couldn&#8217;t commit&#8221; but was not a bad guy.
Delony pushed back. &#8220;Michael, I&#8217;m the father of two kids. He was not a good man,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Good men, they go to war for their kids.&#8221;
He ended on a heartfelt note: &#8220;You are worth having a dad around. And I&#8217;m sorry you didn&#8217;t have that.&#8221;

That shift, he explained, was about something deeper. &#8220;That was my higher purpose,&#8221; he said.
Throughout the interview, O&#8217;Neal reflected on growing up as a self-described &#8220;high-level juvenile delinquent.&#8221; His grandmother was the only one who didn't discipline him. Shaq said he did the same for his parents. Then he did the same for his siblings. Even now, O&#8217;Neal says he doesn't feel fulfilled. &#8220;I could stop right now, but I don't want to stop. You know why I don't want to stop? For them. I read all the time and I&#8217;m looking at the Rockefellers and the Rothschilds. I want my kids to be the O&#8217;Neals.&#8221;
He also explained how he stays driven. It often comes from unexpected places, like jealousy. He described one moment in the Bahamas where he was enjoying time on a rented yacht, projecting success before truly feeling he had earned it. But then, an older man arrived on a much larger yacht, surrounded by a younger wife and her friends. The sight struck him. In his words, &#8220;He was living my life.&#8221; That moment became fuel: &#8220;I want to get enough to where I could get a big yacht and live somewhere blue. That&#8217;s my new fake motivation.&#8221;

They now live on about $1,241 per month, or around $15,000 per year. FIRE&nbsp; stands for financial independence, retire early. &#8220;We're living proof that leanFIRE actually works,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;We're free, we travel half the year, and we're not stressed about money.&#8221;&nbsp;
The couple lives just outside Indianapolis, a low cost of living area they chose intentionally. Their expenses are low in part because they've made some big financial decisions: their <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/real-estate/25/02/43789996/dave-ramsey-says-a-paid-off-mortgage-is-the-new-status-symbol-not-a-bmw-do-you-agree">house is fully paid off</a>, they drive a 2005 Toyota with over 200,000 miles, and they have zero debt.
Despite the tight budget, they don't stay home all year. They spend 4 to 6 months annually overseas in countries like Thailand, where they rent fully furnished apartments for as little as $400 per month and eat street food for less than the cost of cooking at home.

&#8220;Medicaid in 41 states is based on MAGI. No asset testing. It&#8217;s literally how our overlords designed it,&#8221; he explained.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Keeping Costs And Desires Down</h2>
The couple's monthly expenses break down like this:

<li>$275 in property taxes</li>
<li>$120 for electricity</li>
<li>$97 for home insurance</li>
<li>The rest goes to small costs like gas, gym membership, and internet</li>

They avoid spending by not caring about lifestyle inflation. &#8220;Don&#8217;t give a damn what the neighbors think,&#8221; he said. &#8220;'Stuff&#8217; is the enemy of FIRE.&#8221;
Their income comes from a combination of selling short-term Treasury ETFs, dividends, an online side hustle, and occasional bank account signup bonuses. They say their IRA accounts continue to grow untouched.

Some Reddit users were skeptical of the couple's access to Medicaid with over $1 million in net worth. But the husband maintained that their eligibility is fully legal.
&#8220;Nothing unethical about it,&#8221; he said. &#8220;They set the rules of the game. It&#8217;s our job to know and play by the rules.&#8221;

They say not having children makes this lifestyle possible, and many in the comments agreed. &#8220;No kids, no fancy cars, no keeping up with anyone,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;But we&#8217;re free.&#8221;
While many FIRE enthusiasts plan for 4% withdrawal rates, the couple spends closer to 1.5% of their net worth per year. &#8220;You just have to actually want it more than you want stuff,&#8221; he said.

They explained that the bulk of their debt came from a private university degree in archaeology and classics that cost $200,000. Although they&#8217;ve managed to pay a significant portion down, they still owe about $40,000. The poster, who now works as a traveling contractor in a scientific field, said their current approach is simple: &#8220;I will either figure it out and make it work or I won't. But I can't bring myself to fret anymore.&#8221;&nbsp;

In the replies, many reflected those feelings of burnout, resignation and financial paralysis. Cuban's criticism of Bluesky in recent weeks could be a major headwind for the platform.

Cuban said Bluesky has "grown ruder and more hateful" in a recent post, as <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/06/12/business/blueskys-lack-of-diversity-of-thought-driving-users-back-to-x-mark-cuban/">reported </a>by the New York Post.

Adding insult to injury, several Bluesky users didn't like Cuban's criticism of the platform and told him to leave.

On X, Cuban has nine million followers. He has been posting more on the platform in recent days.
Cuban's last post on Bluesky was three days ago. On Bluesky, Cuban has 1.4 million followers and is the second-most followed person, trailing only Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (2 million).
The decentralized social media, which is an alternative to X, saw strong growth after X owner Elon Musk endorsed Donald Trump for president in the 2024 election. The platform also saw strong growth after Trump won the election in November 2024.
The Bluesky user base tripled from 10 million to more than 30 million between November 2024 and May 2025, the report said, citing Pew Research Center data.
With one of the largest voices on Bluesky critical and saying people aren't allowed to share different opinions without getting attacked, users new and old may be scared away and find themselves back on X.

The gaming retailer is specifically accused of implementing&nbsp;a Facebook tracking pixel on&nbsp;its website. This pixel allegedly sent customer&#8217;s personal information, including details of video game purchases, to Facebook without their knowledge or consent.
The settlement, which totals $4.5 million, applies to individuals&nbsp;who purchased a game from&nbsp;GameStop&#8217;s online store between August 18th, 2020, and April 17th, 2025. 
To qualify for the settlement, customers must have been Facebook members&nbsp;and maintained a public Facebook&nbsp;profile using their real name at the time of purchase.

Cardone's post reflects a growing concern in the U.S. as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/05/45497552/americans-consumer-debt-hits-all-time-high-of-18-2-trillion-experts-say-some-borrowers-will-have-a-much-more-difficult-time-getting-credit-going-forward">consumer debt</a> keeps climbing. <a href="https://www.lendingtree.com/personal/personal-loans-statistics/">According to</a> LendingTree (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TREE#NASDAQ">TREE</a>), Americans owed a record $251 billion in personal loan debt as of the fourth quarter of 2024. That's a $6 billion jump from the year before.
And it's not just the total amount. TransUnion (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRU#NYSE">TRU</a>) <a href="https://newsroom.transunion.com/q4-2024-ciir/">data</a> shows that the number of Americans with personal loans hit 24.5 million, up from 23.5 million a year earlier. While personal loan debt still makes up just 1.4% of all consumer debt, it accounts for 5% of non-mortgage debt. For comparison, credit card debt is much higher, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43888952/americans-owe-a-record-1-21-trillion-in-credit-card-debt-expert-warns-theres-no-end-in-sight">sitting at $1.211 trillion</a>, or 6.7% of total outstanding debt.
According to TransUnion, the average personal loan balance per borrower is $11,607. Nearly half of borrowers take out loans just to consolidate or refinance other debt. Another 10% use the money to pay everyday bills.

As Cardone wrote, &#8220;You pay extra for everything&#8221; when you&#8217;re stuck in debt. High interest rates only make it worse. Borrowers with excellent <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/what-is-a-good-credit-score">credit scores</a> &#8212; over 720 &#8212; can expect personal loan APRs around 17.71%. But for those with poor credit &#8212; below 560 &#8212; rates skyrocket to over 200%, according to LendingTree data.
Despite high costs, personal loan use is expected to grow. People turn to them as credit card debt rises. LendingTree notes that many borrowers aren&#8217;t necessarily in crisis—they might be <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/home-equity-loan-for-remodeling">remodeling a home</a> or covering a big expense. Still, as Cardone puts it, for those already stretched thin, more borrowing can result in serious stress and financial strain.
<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/11/42080723/cathie-wood-sounds-alarm-on-us-auto-loans-as-90-day-delinquency-rates-surpass-2009-levels">Delinquency rates</a> also tell a cautionary tale. TransUnion reported that as of Q4 2024, 3.57% of personal loan accounts were 60 or more days past due. That's an improvement from the year before but still higher than rates for mortgages &#8212; 1.29% &#8212; or credit cards &#8212; 2.56%.
Cardone's message is harsh but timely. With debt balances climbing and millions relying on personal loans to stay afloat, his warning resonates: consumer debt doesn't just drain your wallet—it can drain your peace of mind.

&#8220;Summer Fridays were once seen as a perk that allowed employees some flexibility during the summer months,&#8221; Jonathan Weindel, head of data analytics at Envoy, told EBN. 
&#8220;This has just lost a lot of relevance today. And there&#8217;s a lot more intentionality around what employees are doing when they&#8217;re actually in the workplace, primarily Tuesdays through Thursdays.&#8221;
However, as companies prioritize productivity and profitability the Summer Friday tradition is being replaced by broader, year-round flexibility.

Summer Fridays Are Over—Blame It On Remote Work

During a recent episode of his <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gwrvsz-4xg">podcast</a>, &#8220;Office Hours with Prof G,&#8221; marketing professor and investor Scott Galloway had a straightforward message: America needs to stop shaming the unremarkable. "99% of us are not in the top 1%," he said, calling out a higher education system that, in his view, has abandoned most people.

He criticized the current model of higher education, arguing that it prioritizes the wealthy and the exceptional. "Higher education in America is about helping the bottom 90%, not identifying tax breaks and programs to make the top 10% the top 1%," Galloway said.&nbsp;
"I feel like higher education is leading this downfall by deciding that we are there for the children of rich people or for the freakishly remarkable," he added.&nbsp;
To show how common the stigma still is, Galloway described how at social gatherings, people often lower their voices when mentioning that their child is <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41256368/college-dropout-makes-750k-per-year-in-real-estate-he-doesnt-sell-houses-or-own-a-single-piece-of-pr">dropping out of college</a>. "We all speak in hush tones," he said, "like the family's done something wrong or Bobby's mentally ill." He argued that this attitude is unfair and outdated. He believes the U.S. needs to expand apprenticeships and stop fetishizing college degrees. According to him, in Germany and the U.K., 11% of young professionals have ‘apprentice' in their LinkedIn title. In the U.S., it's 3%.
Galloway highlighted the benefits of vocational training, citing that even high school juniors taking auto shop classes are earning up to $70,000 without completing their senior year.

On the topic of returning to office work, Galloway stood by his long-held belief that the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45483359/jamie-dimon-says-dont-tell-jpmorgan-what-to-do-as-he-tells-remote-workers-you-cant-learn-working-fro">office is key</a> for younger professionals to find mentorship, community, and even relationships. "One in three relationships begins at work," he said.

Galloway said companies should recognize the needs of employees with caregiving duties or those with health struggles, suggesting they offer remote work as a thoughtful and practical benefit. He added that flexibility might come with lower pay but called it a fair trade-off.
He also criticized policies that favor older, wealthier Americans. "The average 70-year-old is 72% wealthier than they were 40 years ago. The average person under 40 is 24% less wealthy," he said. That's "an incredible transfer of wealth from young to old."
For young people trying to figure out their path, Galloway offers a grounding message: "Living a good life at modest means—getting up, taking care of your family, being a good partner, being a good citizen—there's real honor in that."

'99% Of Us Are Not In The Top 1%,' Says Scott Galloway, Believes Higher Education Has Given Up On Everyone But The Rich And The Exceptional

The strategic chokepoint of the Strait of Hormuz — the maritime artery through which nearly 20% of global oil flows — is back on the radar of Wall Street research desks, as analysts asses the risk of a crude supply shock following Israel's latest strikes <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/iran">on Iran's nuclear infrastructure.</a>
Squeezed between Iran and Oman, this thin strip of water narrows to just two shipping lanes of only 2 nautical miles each, leaving global oil flows dangerously exposed.
With the Israel-Iran standoff intensifying, the Strait of Hormuz is becoming a major worry for investors and the global economy. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Oil Spiking Above $100 Still A Tail Risk, But Rising In Probability</h3>
Following the 12% weekly jump in oil prices – as tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) – Goldman Sachs has increased its near-term geopolitical risk premium. 
In a note shared Friday, commodity analyst Daan Struyven estimated that if Iranian oil infrastructure is damaged and 1.75 million barrels per day are knocked offline for six months, Brent could briefly spike above $90. 
A broader regional escalation that impacts the Strait of Hormuz, however, could push oil above $100 in what Goldman Sachs describes as a "tail risk but non-negligible" scenario.
&#8220;Almost a third of global seaborne oil trade moves through the Strait of Hormuz. While some portion of oil flows could be diverted to avoid the Strait, it still leaves roughly 14m b/d of oil supply at risk,&#8221; said ING commodity analyst Warren Patterson. 
"A significant disruption would be enough to push Brent to $120 per barrel," he added.

Patterson also noted that global LNG markets would be squeezed, as Qatar — which supplies 20% of the world's liquefied natural gas — depends entirely on this chokepoint, with no viable alternate routes.
According to Kristian Kerr, head of macro strategy at LPL Financial, the market is closely watching how Iran might retaliate, particularly through its proxies. 
"The primary market concern lies with Iran potentially closing the Strait of Hormuz, a critical chokepoint for global oil and gas," Kerr said. 
"We think that's unlikely for now, given Iran&#8217;s need to maintain oil sales to China."
Kerr added that $80 per barrel is an important psychological threshold. A break above that level could trigger broader volatility across equity and credit markets.

O&#8217;Leary emphasized that financial contribution plays a major role in family stability. &#8220;That's key too. I mean, part of the whole financial issue of marriage is you got to provide, you have to take care of your family. That&#8217;s mandate number one.&#8221;

He also made it known what he believes is the biggest threat to a marriage. &#8220;If you have financial stress in a marriage, you&#8217;re going to get divorced. It&#8217;s the No. 1 reason people get divorced, not infidelity. It&#8217;s financial stress.&#8221;
When rating himself, O'Leary said, &#8220;I would say when my kids were young, I was probably a six out of 10, but as a provider, I&#8217;m taking 10 out of 10 for that.&#8221;

Amid the challenges, the company recently<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/legal/25/05/45481977/boeing-may-reportedly-once-again-dodge-prosecution-over-737-max-crashes-victims-families-slam-dojs-potential-agreement-as-backroom-deal-dressed-up-as-a-legal-proceeding"> avoided prosecution </a>by agreeing to pay over $1.1 billion in a deal over two fatal air crashes in 2018 and 2019 that led to the deaths of over 346 people. The decision has angered the victims' families.&nbsp;
The non-prosecution agreement involves the aircraft company investing $455 million in compliance and safety programs, as well as compensating the victims' families with over $444.5 million.
The trial was originally set to begin on June 23, but Boeing struck a deal that involved pleading guilty to misleading the FAA. The company had previously also avoided prosecution in 2021 when it was deferred after Boeing paid over $2.5 billion.
Jeju Air disaster, Faulty Bathroom Latches
In two separate incidents, a Boeing 737-800 aircraft operated by South Korea's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/12/42716905/boeing-in-spotlight-after-fatal-737-800-crash-in-south-korea-stock-declined-28-amid-deepening-2024-challenges">Jeju Air crashed</a>. The crash led to over 179 lives lost from the 181 passengers onboard the aircraft, while the Alaska Air Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ALK#NYSE">ALK</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/01/36523143/im-going-to-die-passengers-experience-15-minute-nightmare-during-alaska-airs-harrowing-emergency">Flight 1282 </a>experienced a sudden loss of cabin pressure, forcing an emergency landing, as well as resulting in over 65 737 MAX 9 aircraft being grounded.
However, the woes didn't stop there as the FAA also proposed an airworthiness report after a passenger was stuck in a lavatory of a Boeing aircraft mid-flight due to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44811150/faulty-bathroom-latches-could-cost-boeing-34-million-following-faa-directive">a faulty bathroom latch</a>. The repairs could reportedly cost Boeing $3.4 million and affect thousands of aircraft in its fleet.
Despite such issues, the FAA has recently allowed Boeing to continue <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/travel/25/05/45692905/faa-extends-program-allowing-boeing-to-conduct-inspections-on-agencys-behalf">inspections and approve repairs</a> on the agency's behalf.
Space ambitions proving difficult to realize
In addition to being a key figure in the aircraft manufacturing sector, Boeing is also a major player in the space exploration industry. The company's flagship rocket, the Starliner, was touted to be Boeing's answer to Elon Musk's SpaceX. However, fast forward to today, the Starliner has had its share of issues.
A <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/space/25/06/45827130/nasa-delays-boeing-starliner-flight-to-2026-amid-ongoing-technical-challenges">failed test in 2024</a> left two astronauts stranded aboard the International Space Station for over 9 months and the vehicle is yet to be certified for human transport. Besides this, the company's progress in its development is slower than anticipated, much to the dismay of<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/06/45855902/why-jeff-bezos-might-emerge-as-the-biggest-winner-in-the-trump-musk-feud"> NASA and Pentagon officials</a>.
Aftermath Of The fatal Ahmedabad crash
Following the disaster, Boeing CEO Kelly Otberg said that "a Boeing team stands ready to support the investigation led by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau."

While they earn $60,000 a year, their coworker, &#8220;John,&#8221; makes $115,000. The two work at a large tech company, and the disparity sparked a flood of advice and opinion on <a href="https://www.reddit.com/r/Salary/comments/1l6vjfc/discovered_a_huge_pay_gap_what_now/">Reddit</a>.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">A Merger, A Staffing Agency And Two Very Different Paychecks</h2>
The original poster explained that they lead two teams—including one that the poster built from scratch—while John is just a member of one. They have been at the company for two years; John has been there for three. The key difference is that John came from a startup that was <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/25/05/45602719/openais-acquisition-of-jony-ives-startup-poses-threat-to-apples-dominance">acquired by the tech giant</a>, keeping his original salary intact. The poster, on the other hand, was hired post-merger through a staffing agency.

&#8220;He was hired as part of a startup that was bought by this tech company,&#8221; OP wrote. &#8220;As such, his higher pay carried over after the merge. I was hired after the merge through a staffing agency.&#8221;
OP later updated the post to add: &#8220;I found out today that the company is trying very hard to find a reason to get rid of John, which is at least partially because he makes so much. Maybe our pay difference was for the best lol!&#8221;
This revelation added a surprising twist to the situation. While OP may be underpaid, John&#8217;s inflated salary appears to have made him a target. Many companies are always looking for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/large-cap/25/06/45748544/walmart-leverages-automation-and-ai-to-cut-costs-and-grow-paving-the-way-for-other-retailers-report">ways to cut costs</a>. If they think someone is overpaid and replaceable, some start building a case to get rid of them.
What started as a frustrating realization for OP might ultimately end in job loss for John. The title of &#8220;highest-paid peer&#8221; can sometimes come with a bullseye.

Commenters were quick to point out a harsh truth: negotiating power is everything.
&#8220;Apply to another job and get an offer. Use that offer to negotiate higher pay at your current job. Then—maybe—take the new job, it might be time to move in a new direction,&#8221; one commenter advised. Another added, &#8220;There is no maybe. Take the new job.&#8221;
Many echoed the same idea: internal raises tend to be small, and significant jumps usually <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/management/25/06/45793441/vincent-chan-reveals-the-top-financial-mistake-people-make-64-of-job-hoppers-say-switching-jobs-actually-leveled-up-their-career-faster">come by switching employers</a>.
Others cautioned that bringing up John&#8217;s name directly in negotiations would be a mistake. &#8220;Try to negotiate a raise and don&#8217;t bring John up in any way, shape or form,&#8221; someone warned. &#8220;You now know how high the ceiling is and they don&#8217;t know that you know. Use that to your advantage.&#8221;

Many highlighted how hiring timing and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/tech/25/06/45851993/mr-wonderful-kevin-oleary-says-he-was-once-told-by-a-ceo-to-shut-up-and-that-leveled-up-his-negotiation-skills-fellow-shark-mark-cuban-also-fle">negotiation skills</a> play a bigger role than job performance. John kept a premium salary due to his previous startup role, while OP started at the lower end because of agency involvement and timing.
&#8220;60k in tech is low, and that has nothing to do with the &#8216;pay gap,&#8217; it&#8217;s just low, period,&#8221; one compensation expert wrote. &#8220;You should be looking and interviewing, and the same would be true if you didn&#8217;t have a better-paid colleague.&#8221;
Some speculated that John's days may be numbered. &#8220;If they had someone that they thought was capable of doing John&#8217;s job for $60k, they would fire John today and hire that person,&#8221; a person foreshadowed what could happen before the post was updated.
The overwhelming consensus is not to count on your company to fix pay discrepancies. Use market research, get external offers, and be willing to leave.
