Shares of Orla Mining Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ORLA#NYSE">ORLA</a>) fell sharply in today's pre-market trading following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ORLA/earnings">weak quarterly sales</a>.
Orla Mining posted adjusted earnings of 12 cents per share, beating market estimates of 10 cents per share. The company's quarterly sales came in at $140.67 million missing expectations of $163.19 million.
Orla Mining shares dipped 9.5% to $10.05 in the pre-market trading session.

Why Sable Offshore Shares Are Trading Higher By 13%; Here Are 20 Stocks Moving Premarket

Canada expects British Columbia to drive the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/canada">next generation of mining investments</a>.
According to the <a href="https://mining.bc.ca/2025/05/2025-economic-impact-study/">2025 Economic Impact Study</a>, 27 projects could contribute up to $90 billion in economic activity.
The report, commissioned by the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) and prepared by Mansfield Consulting, outlines over $41 billion in direct investments. That includes 18 critical mineral, six precious metal, and three steelmaking coal mines. 
Over their lifetimes, these ventures could contribute $984 billion in cumulative economic output.
"B.C. has the minerals, precious metals and steelmaking coal the world needs," MABC CEO Michael Goehring said in a <a href="https://mining.bc.ca/2025/05/mining-will-secure-bcs-economic-future/">prepared statement</a>.
"Mining has the potential to drive a new wave of economic growth — creating jobs, strengthening local and First Nations communities, and generating revenues for government services," he added.
British Columbia boasts nearly 277,000 jobs supported during construction and over two million jobs through operations across Canada. Developers expect the projects to contribute over $421 billion in GDP during operation within the region alone.
Over time, the activity would generate $87.8 billion in provincial taxes and $69.2 billion in federal taxes, bolstering public services. The study urges regulatory reform under newly elected Prime Minister Mark Carney.
Industry reaction to Carney's proposals has been largely positive but cautious. According to MAC President Pierre Gratton, the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) praised his platform for proposing "trade-enabling infrastructure investments, new and expanded tax measures, and support for Indigenous participation.&#8221; 
However, Carney&#8217;s ambiguity on Indigenous consent processes has raised concerns about implementation timelines, which are critical to moving projects forward responsibly and swiftly.
Australia Prime Minister Anthony Albanese faces a similar situation. The mining industry urges the re-elected PM <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/05/45200748/australias-miners-strike-policy-gold-with-labor-reelection-whats-next">to realign</a> with the current global market dynamic.
British Columbia's projects span a diverse resource base. Critical mineral developments include the Baptiste from FPX Nickel (OTCQB:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FPOCF#OTCQB">FPOCF</a>), Seabridge Gold's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SA#NYSE">SA</a>) KSM copper-gold mine, and Giga Metals' (OTCQB:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GIGGF#OTCQB">GIGGF</a>) Turnagain project.
The Baptiste project, for example, could position Canada as a leading supplier of nickel for EV batteries. Meanwhile, with 47.3 million ounces of gold, KSM is one of the largest undeveloped deposits in the world. Turnagain stands out for its carbon-efficient processing technology and potential for low-emission nickel production. Developers expect these projects to attract billions in supplier contracts and generate long-term employment, particularly in rural and Indigenous communities.
"The responsible development of BC's critical minerals, precious metals, and steelmaking coal resources can secure BC's economic future, resiliency and long-term prosperity. It's time to get more mines built," Goehring concluded.

British Columbia Mining Surge Could Add $90B To Canadian Economy: Study

Billionaire investor John Paulson and NovaGold Resources, Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NG#AMEX">NG</a>) have agreed to purchase a significant stake in the Donlin Gold project in Alaska. Barrick Gold Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) will sell its entire 50% interest in the project <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44927342/novagold-partners-inks-deal-with-barrick-gold-boosts-stake-in-donlin-project-for-1-billion">for $1 billion in cash.</a>
The Details: Novagold will purchase a 10% stake in Donlin Gold for $200 million, raising its ownership to 60% from 50%.
Paulson &amp; Co. will acquire the remaining 40% for $800 million, becoming a full and equal partner in managing the Donlin Gold project.
The Donlin Gold Project is a planned mining operation located in Alaska, with estimated gold reserves of approximately 39 million ounces — making it one of the world's largest undeveloped gold deposits.

Paulson, who has several notable investments in gold miners, called Donlin Gold "one of the most attractive development gold projects in the world."&nbsp;
"With 39 million ounces of gold at double the industry average grade, and an optimal location in the prime jurisdiction of Alaska — already the second largest gold-producing state in the United States — we believe that the project could create value for decades to come," Paulson added.&nbsp;
Paulson's Gold Miners: The billionaire investor's hedge fund Paulson &amp; Co. also holds a 37% stake in International Tower Hill Mines Ltd. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/THM#AMEX">THM</a>) and a $264.3 million stake in Perpetua Resources Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PPTA#NASDAQ">PPTA</a>). 
Trilogy Metals Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMQ#AMEX">TMQ</a>), Seabridge Gold, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SA#NYSE">SA</a>), Equinox Gold Corp. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EQX#AMEX">EQX</a>) and Iamgold Corp. Gold Rally: Gold has surged more than 30% in 2025, reaching $3,490 per ounce on Tuesday and setting a new record high price. 
In fact, Monday's 3%-plus gold rally was the fifth time in the past 10 trading days that gold climbed at least 2% in a single day. The only periods that experienced a higher frequency of 2%-plus daily moves in the past 50 years were in January and June 1980, according to Bespoke Investment Group.

International Tower Hills Mines holds interests in the Livengood Gold Project, located northwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in the Tolovana mining district within the Tintina gold belt. The company's stock has climbed more than 40% over the past month as the price of gold rallied. 
Other Miner Holdings: Paulson &amp; Co.&#8217;s other gold miner holdings include a $264.3 million stake in Perpetua Resources Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PPTA#NASDAQ">PPTA</a>) and a $111 million stake in Novagold Resources Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NG#AMEX">NG</a>). 
Trilogy Metals Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMQ#AMEX">TMQ</a>), Seabridge Gold, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SA#NYSE">SA</a>), Equinox Gold Corp. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EQX#AMEX">EQX</a>) and Iamgold Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAG#NYSE">IAG</a>) round out the remainder of Paulson&#8217;s gold mining holdings. 
Paulson talked about de-dollarization and the benefits of owning gold in a 2023 <a href="https://www.alainelkanninterviews.com/john-paulson/">interview</a> with Alain Elkann.&nbsp;
"There has been a significant increase in demand from central banks to replace dollars with gold, and we're just at the beginning of that trend. Gold will go up and the dollar will go down, so you'd be better off keeping your investment reserves in gold at this point," Paulson said.&nbsp;
The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) ETF, which tracks the price of gold bullion, has gained nearly 40% over the past year.

Shares of companies within the broader materials sector are trading lower amid economic worries driven by tariffs and trade policies. Investors may be expecting a decline in investment, which may also be weighing on the industry.

Seabridge Gold Inc. (TSX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SEA#TSX">SEA</a>) (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SA#NYSE">SA</a>) ("Seabridge" or the "Company") announced today it has entered into an agreement with RBC Capital Markets and Cantor Fitzgerald Canada Corporation (together the "Co-Lead Underwriters"), as co-lead underwriters and joint bookrunners on behalf of a syndicate of underwriters (collectively, the "Underwriters"), to purchase, on a bought deal basis, 6,540,000 common shares of the Company (the "Offered Shares") at the price of US$12.25 per Offered Share (the "Issue Price") for aggregate gross proceeds of approximately US$80 million (the "Offering"). The Underwriters will have an option to purchase up to an additional 15% of the Offered Shares issued in the Offering at the Issue Price to cover over-allotments, exercisable in whole or in part, at any time until 30 days after the closing of the Offering.
Concurrent with the Offering, Seabridge has also entered into a subscription agreement with a strategic investor (the "Strategic Investor") to purchase 1,640,000 common shares of the Company on substantially the same terms as the Offering for aggregate gross proceeds of approximately US$20 million (the "Private Placement"). Seabridge expects to raise aggregate gross proceeds of approximately US$100 million (equivalent to approximately C$143 million) between both the Offering and the Private Placement (together, the "Financing").

Paulson's Holdings: The Paulson &amp; Co. fund is heavily invested in mining stocks which together make up more than 33% of the total portfolio. Paulson's other holdings include mostly shares of healthcare and financial services companies.&nbsp;
According to the fund's most recent 13F<a href="https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/0001035674/000101359424000980/xslForm13F_X02/primary_doc.xml"> filing</a>, Paulson &amp; Co.'s largest gold miner holding is a $231.6 million stake in Perpetua Resources Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PPTA#NASDAQ">PPTA</a>), a development-stage mining company primarily focused on the exploration and restoration of the Stibnite Gold Project in Idaho.&nbsp;
Perpetua Resources stock is up nearly 300% in 2024.&nbsp;
The fund also holds a $111 million stake in Novagold Resources Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NG#AMEX">NG</a>) which owns 50% of the Donlin Gold project located in southwestern Alaska.&nbsp;
International Tower Hill Mines, Ltd. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/THM#AMEX">THM</a>), a gold miner with mines in Canada, Mexico, Finland, and Australia, is one of two penny stock holdings found in Paulson's fund. The other is Trilogy Metals Inc. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMQ#AMEX">TMQ</a>) with mineral resource properties including the Upper Kobuk Mineral Projects in Alaska.&nbsp;
Seabridge Gold, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SA#NYSE">SA</a>), Equinox Gold Corp. (AMEX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EQX#AMEX">EQX</a>) and Iamgold Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAG#NYSE">IAG</a>) round out the remainder of Paulson's gold mining holdings. 
Notably, the fund closed its position in AngloGold Ashanti Plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AU#NYSE">AU</a>), selling nearly 2 million shares in the third quarter of 2024.&nbsp;
