Some of these sellers bought NRG for around $160 in May. When the price fell after, many experienced buyer remorse. They decided to sell their shares if they returned to $160, and they could finally exit their positions at breakeven.
The large concentration of their sell orders formed resistance at the same level that had previously been resistance.
In the lower part of the pattern, called the ‘neckline', there was support around $145. Buyers put a floor under the price at this level.
But now this support has been broken. Sellers have overpowered the buyers and forced the price lower.
Breaking of support tends to be a bearish dynamic. It shows that the investors and traders who created the support with their buy orders have either finished or canceled their orders.

US Stock Futures Trade Higher On Wednesday: S&P 500 Is Flashing 'Quite Rare And Rather Bullish' Signal, Says Expert (UPDATED)

NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) is on fire. Shares have jumped more than <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/nrg/news">31% in just five trading days</a>, pushing year-to-date gains past 64%. The stock surged over 24% on Monday to a record high of $148.30, after announcing a $12 billion acquisition of LS (Luminus Systems) Power's generation assets.
With U.S. power demand set to spike — driven by AI, crypto, and increased commercial and residential use — NRG is betting big on future consumption. The LS Power deal gives it a stronger foothold in the PJM (Pennsylvania–New Jersey–Maryland Interconnection) market, a key electricity hub.

The company also reported a 47% jump in first quarter net income to $750 million. Long-term EPS growth guidance was raised from 10% to 14% as the LS Power assets are expected to add to earnings immediately.
This acquisition is just the latest in a string of strategic moves. NRG recently bought Rockland's natural gas assets, signed supply deals with data center operators, and is co-developing 5.4 GW of new gas capacity with GE Vernova.

NRG's technical setup is screaming bullish. The stock trades well above its eight-, 20-, 50- and 200-day moving averages. Its eight-day SMA sits at $126.71 versus a current price of $154.82.
Meanwhile, the RSI (relative strength index) has surged to 86.04, signaling extreme strength and continued buying pressure. While typically an RSI above 70 indicates overbought conditions and possibility of a reversal in trend, in strong uptrends or breakout scenarios (like NRG's surge on deal news), stocks can remain overbought for extended periods. 
So while RSI 86.04 does flag caution, it doesn't guarantee an immediate reversal — especially if fundamentals and momentum remain strong.

President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/05/45341590/trumps-drug-pricing-executive-order-could-rattle-pharma-stocksprice-cuts-up-to-80">signed an executive order</a> Monday, seeking to slash U.S. drug prices, fulfilling a social media pledge to achieve cuts of at least 59%. 
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.45% and the two-year bond was at 3.98%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 91.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its June meeting.

Cues From Last Session:
Information technology, consumer discretionary, and communication services sectors saw the biggest gains on Monday. The Dow Jones index soared over 1,100 points as the U.S. and China agreed to a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/05/45341884/apple-amazon-nvidia-rise-in-monday-premarket-as-us-china-agree-to-90-day-tariff-truce-neither-side-wants-a-decoupling">90-day tariff truce</a>, effective May 14. 
This, along with the Trump administration&#8217;s progress to further formal trade talks amid growing economic pressures, fueled the market optimism.
However, this positive Monday followed a down week for major U.S. indices, with the S&amp;P 500, Nasdaq, and Dow all closing lower on Friday.
In stock-specific news, NRG Energy Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) reported strong first-quarter results, while Kindly MD Inc.&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KDLY#NASDAQ">KDLY</a>) shares skyrocketed following a Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) treasury strategy merger.
Meanwhile, utility stocks moved against the broader market trend, closing lower.
After Monday, all the indices were out of the correction zone. The S&amp;P 500 index was down 4.93% from its record high of 6,147.43 points, scaled on Feb. 19. Dow Jones was 5.91% lower than its 52-week high of 45,073.63 points, and Nasdaq 100 was 6.09% lower than its previous high of 22,222.61 points.
The Dow Jones index declined 119 points or 0.29% to 41,249.38, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell 0.071% to 5,659.91. Nasdaq Composite ended 0.004% higher at 17,928.92, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, dropped 0.16% to 2,023.07.

Insights From Analysts:
Ryan Detrick from Carson Research highlighted in an X post that more than 55% of the S&amp;P 500 components made a new 20-day high on Monday.
According to the historical data presented by him, the S&amp;P 500 index ended 16.3% higher on average following days with such fresh 20-day highs. Out of the 30 times this has happened, the index has closed the year on a positive note 29 times.
&#8220;This is yet another clue the lows are likely in and better times are coming,&#8221; Detrick wrote in an X post.

The S&amp;P 500 index has a year-to-date performance low of 15.3%. Detrick highlighted that &#8220;Only three times in history has the S&amp;P 500 been down at least 15% YTD and moved back to positive by the end of the year.&#8221;
Despite having only three such instances historically, he added that 2025 could be the fourth such year.

After the 90-day tariff pause between the U.S. and China, John Murillo, chief dealing officer of B2BROKER, a global fintech solutions provider, said that the news triggered an immediate positive market response. 
"Stocks and oil prices have rebounded – apparently, in reaction to the news, which can lead to lower costs for businesses and consumers," Murillo noted.
Despite the initial positive action following the announcement, Murillo emphasized the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45367206/sp-500-rallies-over-3-on-us-china-90-day-tariff-truce-but-experts-warn-it-doesnt-guarantee-a-complete-resolution-of-the-trade-war">temporary nature of the agreement</a>. "Now, while the 90-day pause is a big step towards easing tensions, it&#8217;s crucial to remember that it doesn&#8217;t guarantee a complete resolution of the trade war."
Meanwhile, Ed Yardeni, the President of Yardeni Research, has <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45367861/ed-yardeni-revises-recession-odds-to-25-after-the-rally-bumps-sp-500-year-end-target-to-6500">lowered his U.S. recession probability</a> to 25% while raising his S&amp;P 500 target to 6,500 points for this year, following the trade deal with China. &#8212;

US Stocks Likely To Open Lower After A Strong Rally: 'Lows Are Likely In And Better Times Are Coming,' Says Expert

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed an improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Monday.
U.S. stocks settled higher on Monday, with the Dow Jones index jumping more than 1,100 points during the session. The U.S. and China agreed to a 90-day truce by slashing triple-digit tariffs effective May 14. The Trump administration also agreed to hold more formal trade talks with Beijing after mounting signs of economic pressure on businesses and consumers.
However, major indices on the US closed lower last week, with the S&amp;P 500 falling about 0.5% and the Nasdaq down around 0.3%. The Dow also declined almost 0.2% in the week.
NRG Energy, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NRG#NYSE">NRG</a>) reported better-than-expected first-quarter financial results. Shares of Kindly MD, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KDLY#NASDAQ">KDLY</a>) jumped 251% on Monday after the company announced a merger agreement with Nakamoto Holdings to start a Bitcoin treasury strategy.
On the economic data front, the U.S. government recorded a $258 billion budget surplus in April, up 23% year-over-year.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with information technology, consumer discretionary and communication services stocks recording biggest gains on Friday. However, utilities stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 1,161 points to 42,410.10 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 surged 3.26% to 5,844.19, while the Nasdaq Composite jumped 4.35% at 18,708.34 during Monday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from Under Armour, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UAA#NYSE">UAA</a>), CyberArk Software Ltd. Activist investor Elliott Investment Management scored a victory on Monday when Institutional Shareholder Services recommended investors elect all four of Elliott&#8217;s director nominees to the Phillips 66 (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PSX#NYSE">PSX</a>) board, bolstering the hedge fund&#8217;s campaign for strategic changes at the oil refiner.
What Happened: Elliott, which <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/02/43614105/activist-investor-elliott-builds-25-billion-stake-in-phillips-66-pressures-for-midstream-spinoff-report">holds a $2.5 billion stake in Phillips 66</a>, has urged the company to divest its midstream business. Proxy advisory firm ISS backed all four of Elliott's board nominees, joining Glass Lewis and Egan-Jones in supporting the activist's push ahead of the May 21 shareholder vote, Reuters reported.
