What's Going On With NIO Stock Today?

EV battery supplier CATL has reportedly co-developed 10 new electric vehicle models with automakers that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40461793/nio-sets-the-stage-for-a-charging-revolution-reportedly-plans-massive-expansion-at-power-up-2024">use swappable batteries</a>.
What Happened: The first EV using CATL&#8217;s battery-swapping brand EVOGO&#8217;s &#8220;choco swap battery&#8221; will be rolled out this month, Reuters reported, citing the company&#8217;s CEO Yang Jun.
Yang was speaking at an event in the city of Xiamen, China. The remaining EVs co-developed by the company that uses swappable batteries will be launched in future months, the report added.
CATL is now looking to put up 1000 battery swapping stations in 2025. The swappable batteries would come in two standard sizes to accelerate adoption and the subscription fee for the choco swap battery swapping service would start from 369 yuan/ month, the report said.
As per Yang, China could eventually have enough battery-swapping stations to replace a third of its 100,000 gas stations. The executive also expects that battery swapping will make up a third of the options available to customers to fuel their electric vehicles such as home and public chargers by 2030.
Why It Matters: Chinese EV startup Nio Inc. On Monday, President Xi Jinping&#8217;s Politburo pledged <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/24/12/42391254/us-listed-chinese-stocks-jump-on-chinas-stimulus-measures-looser-monetary-policy-assurances" rel="noreferrer noopener">aggressive fiscal measures</a> and a relatively more flexible monetary policy in 2025 to boost domestic consumption.
Tao Wang of UBS Group AG <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-12-10/china-begins-annual-economic-meeting-to-hash-out-stimulus-plan?sref=TBDibEcD" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> Bloomberg that he expects China to boost policy support in the next two years, including more supportive policy tones for 2025.
China&#8217;s stimulus so far has focused on producers and infrastructure, especially electric vehicles, solar energy, and batteries.
Economists expect China to set a higher-than-usual budget&nbsp;deficit target&nbsp;of up to 4% of GDP.
According to Bloomberg, Xi expressed confidence in the world&#8217;s second-largest economy in several meetings over the past week.&nbsp;
Larry Hu of Macquarie told Reuters that China&#8217;s initiatives for 2025 will depend on its GDP target and the new U.S. tariffs. He does not expect China to announce 2025 growth, budget deficit, or other targets.

Why NIO Stock Is Falling

Shares of US-listed Chinese stocks are trading lower following weak China import data.

Shares of U.S.-listed Chinese companies took a hit on Tuesday, giving back much of Monday's rally as disappointing trade data highlighted persistent challenges in the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/china">world's second-largest economy. </a>
China&#8217;s November trade data continued to paint a stark picture of an economy grappling with a prolonged slowdown. 
Imports fell as domestic demand remains weak, while exports surged, particularly to the U.S., driven by manufacturers racing to beat potential new tariffs under President-elect Donald Trump&#8216;s administration.
Weak domestic consumption and a deepening housing market crisis have clouded investor optimism, despite Beijing&#8217;s promises of fiscal and monetary stimulus for 2024.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Chinese Imports Dive, Exports</h3>
Imports to China slumped 3.9% year-over-year in November to $214.87 billion, marking the steepest decline in nine months. This contraction, worse than October's 2.3% drop and far below expectations of 0.3% growth, underscores a softening domestic economy plagued by weak consumption and an ongoing housing crisis.
In the first 11 months of 2024, imports edged up just 1.2% to $2.36 trillion, highlighting lackluster demand in a country long touted as a key driver of global trade.
Meanwhile, exports grew 6.7% year-over-year to $312.31 billion in November, missing forecasts of 8.5% growth and sharply down from October&#8217;s 12.7% surge. Despite marking the eighth consecutive month of export expansion and a 26-month high in export value, the numbers tell a more nuanced story.
The export surge reflects manufacturers scrambling to front-load shipments to the U.S. in anticipation of new tariffs. Overall, Chinese exports to the U.S. rose by 8% last month.
"Chinese companies rushed to get goods to the U.S. before new tariffs are imposed," said Saxo Bank&#8217;s head of commodity strategy Ole Hansen.
China&#8217;s trade surplus ballooned to $97.44 billion in November, up from $69.45 billion a year earlier and above market expectations of $95 billion. This was the largest surplus since June, fueled by the export growth and plummeting imports.
While a larger surplus might seem like a win, it signals deeper troubles. A high trade surplus is a symptom of weak domestic demand, as subdued consumption is curbing imports while China increasingly relies on exports for growth.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Stimulus Skepticism Grows, Geopolitical Risks Add Pressure</h3>
The weak trade data dampened enthusiasm for Beijing's recently announced fiscal and monetary stimulus measures for 2024. "China sits on 300% total debt-to-GDP and flirts with deflation," macro analyst Alfonso Peccatiello, known as @macroalf, wrote on X. "They better get their act together for real this time."
Markets appear skeptical about Beijing's ability to deliver meaningful economic recovery. Andreas Steno Larsen, chief investment officer at Steno Global Macro Fund, commented, "Markets are likely less inclined to buy into the Chinese stimulus story this time due to a lack of credibility."
Adding to economic woes, geopolitical tensions are flaring. Taiwan raised its alert level as nearly 90 Chinese navy and coast guard vessels were reportedly massing near Taiwan, southern Japan, and the East and South China Seas, according to Reuters.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Top Chinese Stocks Reverse Course</h3>
PDD Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PDD#NASDAQ">PDD</a>) fell 4% in premarket trading after a stunning 10.5% surge on Monday. 
Alibaba Group Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BABA#NYSE">BABA</a>) dropped 2.6% following a 7.5% gain, and JD.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) slid 3.6%, erasing some of its 11% rally from the previous session.
Chinese electric vehicle makers also saw red. Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>) dropped 3.1%, while NIO Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) tumbled 4.4%, reversing Monday&#8217;s gains of 8% and 12.4%, respectively.
The iShares China Large-Cap ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FXI#NYSE">FXI</a>) tumbled 4%, partially erasing Monday&#8217;s 8.2% spike.

Industrial profits declined 10% in the month, compared to the 27.1% drop reported in September.
China launched a $840 billion stimulus&nbsp;to ease local debt burdens and drive economic growth.
China&#8217;s Citic Securities <a target="_blank" href="https://www.scmp.com/business/china-business/article/3289527/investors-search-fresh-china-stimulus-signs-ahead-xi-jinpings-economic-conference" rel="noreferrer noopener">told</a> the SCMP that it expects the 2025 conference to focus on favorable macroeconomic policies, including prioritization of local government debt, the property market, consumption, and technological innovation.
China plans to boost home purchases to build a reserve of affordable housing and urges local governments to buy back unused land to support the property market.
It has also previously flagged further mortgage-rate cuts to stimulate demand and initiatives to reduce the tech sector&#8217;s dependence on foreign sources.
The brokerage does not expect discussions on economic growth targets and government leverage to be revealed before 2025&#8217;s National People&#8217;s Congress (NPC). It expects the 2025 growth target to remain firm year-on-year at 5% with an increase in the deficit ratio.

In November, NIO reportedly added 120 new fourth-generation battery swap stations, bringing the total number of stations to 2,741 by November 30, <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/04/nio-adds-120-swap-stations-china-nov-2024/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> CnEV Post.
Of these, 903 are located along highways, enhancing the convenience of long-distance travel for NIO electric vehicle owners.
The new stations are designed to further strengthen NIO&#8217;s battery-swapping network, a key differentiator for the company in the competitive EV market.
In November, NIO completed 2.318 million battery swaps, averaging 77,268 swaps per day.
On average, each NIO user used the battery swap service four times that month, with each swap taking about three minutes, CnEV Post added. NIO said the service saved users 3 hours and 48 minutes per month compared to charging.

NIO House Abu Dhabi serves as a flagship showroom, offering visitors a space to view NIO&#8217;s electric vehicles (EVs) and experience the brand&#8217;s customer-focused environment.
According to&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://pro.benzinga.com/?gspk=YWRhbWVja2VydDUzMzY&amp;gsxid=zBMR4PKmcgBw" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>, NIO stock has lost over 36% in the past year.
In another development, delivery times for three of NIO&#8217;s popular models—ET7, EC7, and ES8—have increased slightly.
For the first time in five months, customers now face a 3-4 week wait, compared to the previous 2-3 week wait, CnEV Post <a target="_blank" href="https://cnevpost.com/2024/12/04/nio-et7-ec7-es8-longer-wait-times/" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a>.
NIO currently offers a lineup of eight models, with the highly anticipated ET9 expected to begin deliveries in the first quarter of 2025.

With U.S. stock futures trading lower this morning on Monday, some of the stocks that may grab investor focus today are as follows:

Imperial Petroleum shares rose 0.6% to $3.20 in after-hours trading.</li>
<li>NIO Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>) said it delivered 20,575 vehicles in November, representing a 28.9% year-over-year surge. Nio shares gained 2.3% to close at $4.48 on Friday.</li>
<li>Analysts are expecting Zscaler, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ZS#NASDAQ">ZS</a>) to post quarterly earnings at 63 cents per share on revenue of $606.2 million. The company will release earnings after the markets close. Zscaler shares gained 0.8% to close at $206.59 in after-hours trading.</li>

Zscaler, Nio And 3 Stocks To Watch Heading Into Monday

U.S.-listed Chinese EV startups&nbsp;Nio Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NIO#NYSE">NIO</a>),&nbsp;Li Auto Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LI#NASDAQ">LI</a>), and&nbsp;XPeng Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XPEV#NYSE">XPEV</a>) reported their November delivery numbers on Sunday with Li Auto topping the three by a significant margin.
Li Auto Tops The Chart:&nbsp;Li Auto&nbsp;said on Sunday that it delivered&nbsp;48,740 vehicles in November, marking an 18.8% jump in sales year-over-year but a 5.3% drop from October when it delivered 51,443 vehicles.
The rise in sales,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/10/41647868/li-auto-q3-earnings-24-topline-growth-1-million-deliveries-milestone-q4-revenue-outlook-lags-street" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Li Auto said</a>, could be attributed to robust sales across its model lineup. 
XPeng Mona M03 Deliveries Exceed 10k Units:&nbsp;XPeng&nbsp;also witnessed its deliveries rise in November. The company delivered 30,895 vehicles last month, marking an increase of 54% year-over-year and 29% from October.
The Guangzhou-based EV startup said that the company's deliveries of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/39618570/xpeng-debuts-mona-series-with-m03-with-official-launch-in-august-report" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">XPeng Mona M03 </a>hatchback coupe alone exceeded 10,000 units for the third consecutive month since launch. Deliveries of the XPeng P7+ sedan, which the company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/41893888/tesla-rival-xpengs-stock-surges-over-5-after-ev-maker-starts-deliveries-of-p7-sedan-in-china">launched last month</a>, also exceeded 7,000 units.
ONVO Spurs Nio Forward:&nbsp;Shanghai-based&nbsp;Nio, meanwhile, delivered 20,575 vehicles in November, including 15,493 NIO brand vehicles and 5,082&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/10/41195060/tesla-rival-nio-accelerates-global-expansion-to-launch-evs-in-middle-east-amid-eu-tariff-concern" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">ONVO brand vehicles</a>. This marks a near 2% dip from its October delivery numbers and a whopping 29% rise from its sales in November 2023.
Deliveries of the first ONVO vehicle – the ONVO L60 – commenced recently in late September.
