The first quarter&#8217;s gross margin fell to 46.7% from 47.6% a year ago, mainly due to brand mix shifts at Journeys and Schuh, promotions at Schuh, and lower margins from product liquidations at Genesco Brands.
Genesco reported a GAAP operating loss of $28.1 million, or 5.9% of sales, down from $32.1 million, or 7%, a year ago. On an adjusted basis, the loss narrowed to $27.9 million from $30.0 million, with the operating margin improving to a loss of 5.9% of sales from a loss of 6.5% in the first quarter last year.
As of May 3, 2025, Genesco held $21.7 million in cash, up from $19.2 million a year earlier. Total debt rose to $121 million from $59.4 million, mainly due to a 15% inventory increase to support higher demand at Journeys.
Genesco repurchased 604,531 shares for $12.6 million, or $20.79 per share, during the quarter. Under its expanded buyback program, announced in June 2023, it has $29.8 million remaining.
In the first quarter, capital expenditures totaled $19 million, mainly for retail stores and other projects. The company opened four new stores and closed 26, ending the quarter with 1,256 stores. This represents a 5% decrease from 1,321 stores at the end of the first quarter last year. Overall square footage also decreased by 3% year-over-year.

For fiscal 2026, Genesco reaffirmed its expectation of adjusted diluted EPS between $1.30 and $1.70 versus the consensus estimate of $1.47, factoring in current tariffs.
Total sales are now projected to rise 1%–2%, up from prior guidance of flat to 1%, due to favorable foreign exchange. Comparable sales range outlook narrowed to up 2% to 3% versus the prior range of up 2% to 4%, with no additional share buybacks assumed and a 29% tax rate.

US Stocks Likely To Open Lower After Trump Hints At Looming Recession: Expert Says Can't Rule Out A Bear Market As Indices Inch Towards Correction Territory

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index showed some improvement in the overall market sentiment, while the index remained in the &#8220;Extreme Fear&#8221; zone on Friday.
U.S. stocks settled higher on Friday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 200 points during the session. However, the index recorded losses last week.
The S&amp;P 500 recorded its worst week since September, falling 3.1% last week. The Dow declined 2.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 3.5% during the week.
On the economic data front, the February jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, released Friday, showed a moderate increase in employment and also a slight increase in the unemployment rate.
The U.S. economy added 151,000 jobs in February, up from a downwardly revised 125,000 in January, but below expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) shares dipped over 16% on Friday after the company reported worse-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results. American Public Education Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/APEI#NASDAQ">APEI</a>) shares surged 22% after the company reported better-than-expected quarterly financial results.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a positive note, with utilities, information technology and energy stocks recording the biggest gains on Friday. However, consumer staples and financial stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session lower.
The Dow Jones closed higher by around 223 points to 42,801.72 on Friday. The S&amp;P 500 rose 0.55% to 5,770.20, while the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.70% at 18,196.22 during Friday's session.

All three major indices were red in Friday&#8217;s midday trading, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 down 1% and 1.24%, respectively, and on track for their worst weeks since September 2024. Tariff announcements and uncertainty roiled markets throughout the week. President Donald Trump on Thursday suspended <a href="http://Namrata Sen Canadian PM Justin Trudeau Retaliates With 25% Tariffs On US Goods Amid Escalating Trade War (CORRECTED) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a 25% tariff on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods. This decision comes as a direct response to the 25% tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Canadian goods, as reported by BNN Bloomberg. 3/7/2025, 4:05 AM">all tariffs</a> on products covered by the North American trade agreement until April 2, though it had little effect on market volatility.

"The stock market is moving in lockstep with tariff headlines, and that is likely to keep volatility very elevated for the foreseeable future, as the market does not like uncertainty," said Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management, per CNBC.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note dipped to the 4.23% mark on Friday after a softer-than-expected February <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44189725/unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-february-us-economy-adds-fewer-jobs-than-expected">jobs report</a> added to concerns of a slowing U.S. economy. The BLS nonfarm payrolls report showed the U.S. added 151,000 jobs in February, below market expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected. 
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 0.6% to $90.94. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell back below $90,000 after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve on Thursday. The President&#8217;s crypto summit will be held at the White House later on Friday with the potential for additional catalysts for cryptocurrencies.
Wall Street now looks ahead to next week&#8217;s inflation data, JOLTS job openings report and preliminary figures for the Michigan consumer sentiment index.
