U.S. stock futures declined on Monday after a small bout of relief on Friday as indices neared the correction zone. Futures of all four benchmark indices fell in premarket trading.
President Donald Trump, on Sunday, did not rule out the possibility of a recession this year. Acknowledging the potential of short-term turbulence from his economic agenda, he expressed confidence in future prosperity. In a Fox News interview, he said, &#8220;I hate to predict things like that&#8221; and called the changes being brought about by his administration as &#8220;very big.&#8221;
Meanwhile, China responded with retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural goods including its largest import from the U.S. — Soybeans.
Investors will watch out for the inflation data slated to be released this week on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.24%, while the two-year yield was at 3.94%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is a 97% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

Cues From The Last Session
Utilities, information technology, and energy sectors led Friday&#8217;s U.S. <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/03/44212927/dow-gains-over-200-points-but-records-weekly-loss-fear-among-investors-eases-but-greed-index-remains-in-extreme-fear-zone">stock gains</a>, pushing the Dow Jones over 200 points higher. However, consumer staples and financials declined, countering the broader market&#8217;s positive trend. 
Despite Friday&#8217;s rally, all major indices recorded weekly losses: the S&amp;P 500 fell 3.1%, its worst week since September, the Dow dropped 2.4%, and the Nasdaq tumbled 3.5%. Last week, Nasdaq 100 entered the correction territory on Friday, falling nearly 10% from its last high, which eased to 9.1% after Friday&#8217;s sessions, whereas the S&amp;P 500 was 6.1% lower from its last record.
Economic data revealed a mixed picture, with February&#8217;s jobs report showing a moderate increase of 151,000 jobs, below expectations, and a surprise rise in the unemployment rate to 4.1%.
In company news, Genesco Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) shares plummeted over 16% on disappointing earnings, while American Public Education Inc. According to the Yardeni Research&#8217;s QuickTakes by Ed Yardeni and Eric Wallerstein, &#8220;Anything is possible in Trump World.&#8221;
&#8220;We can&#8217;t rule out the possibility that a bear market started on Feb. 20, the day after the S&amp;P 500 rose to a record high. It could be like the &#8216;flash crashes&#8217; that occurred during 1962 and 1987. It could happen quickly and reverse just as quickly. So the selloff could provide buying opportunities, especially in overvalued names that are now less so,&#8221; the note stated.
According to the note, Trump administration&#8217;s rapid-fire policy initiatives are stress-testing the economy, which has been remarkably resilient so far, and raising fears of a recession.

While the conflict around tariffs has raised the speculation of a slowdown and recession, Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates had a contrarian view. According to him, &#8220;The anxiety over tariffs may be holding back some consumers, but I want to assure you that I do not expect most tariffs to be inflationary. As an example, the tariffs that have been imposed on China are expected to be suppressed by Chinese deflation as well as a weak Chinese yuan.&#8221;

US Stocks Likely To Open Lower After Trump Hints At Looming Recession: Expert Says Can't Rule Out A Bear Market As Indices Inch Towards Correction Territory

U.S. stocks settled higher on Friday, with the Dow Jones index gaining more than 200 points during the session. However, the index recorded losses last week.
The S&amp;P 500 recorded its worst week since September, falling 3.1% last week. The Dow declined 2.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 3.5% during the week.
On the economic data front, the February jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, released Friday, showed a moderate increase in employment and also a slight increase in the unemployment rate.
The U.S. economy added 151,000 jobs in February, up from a downwardly revised 125,000 in January, but below expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected.

All three major indices were red in Friday&#8217;s midday trading, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq 100 down 1% and 1.24%, respectively, and on track for their worst weeks since September 2024. The Nasdaq fell into correction territory on Friday after dropping more than 10% below<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/03/44196560/bessent-describes-economic-detox-period-as-us-shifts-to-trump-policies"> its peak in February. </a>
Tariff announcements and uncertainty roiled markets throughout the week. "The stock market is moving in lockstep with tariff headlines, and that is likely to keep volatility very elevated for the foreseeable future, as the market does not like uncertainty," said Glen Smith, chief investment officer at GDS Wealth Management, per CNBC.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury note dipped to the 4.23% mark on Friday after a softer-than-expected February <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44189725/unemployment-rate-ticks-higher-in-february-us-economy-adds-fewer-jobs-than-expected">jobs report</a> added to concerns of a slowing U.S. economy. The BLS nonfarm payrolls report showed the U.S. added 151,000 jobs in February, below market expectations of 160,000, as tracked by Trading Economics. The unemployment rate ticked unexpectedly higher to 4.1%, above the 4.0% expected. 
The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 0.6% to $90.94. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell back below $90,000 after President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing a strategic Bitcoin reserve on Thursday. The President&#8217;s crypto summit will be held at the White House later on Friday with the potential for additional catalysts for cryptocurrencies.

Nasdaq Falls Into Correction As Tariffs Roil Wall Street: What's Moving Markets Friday?

Genesco Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading lower on Friday.</a>
The company reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $3.26, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/b44187355/genesco-inc-reports-fiscal-2025-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">missing the street view of $3.31</a>. Quarterly sales of $745.949 million (increased 1%&nbsp;year over year) missed the analyst consensus estimate of $784.85 million.
Comparable sales increased by 10%, with stores growing by 6% and e-commerce rising by 18%. E-commerce sales accounted for 30% of retail sales, compared to 27% last year.

Fiscal fourth quarter gross margin was 46.9%, up 60 basis points compared with 46.3% last year. The increase was primarily due to lower markdowns at Journeys and improved margins at Genesco Brands and Johnston &amp; Murphy, partially offset by increased promotional activity at Schuh.
Adjusted operating margin was 6.4% of sales, compared with 5.2% in the year-ago period.
Mimi E. Vaughn, Genesco&#8217;s Board Chair, President and Chief Executive Officer, said, &#8220;Our performance was led by Journeys as the strategic growth initiatives we&#8217;ve implemented over the past 12 months fueled strong full priced selling and mid-teens comp growth.&#8221;
&#8220;At the same time, sales trends at Schuh and Johnston &amp; Murphy further improved with fourth quarter comps for both businesses reaching the highest level of the year,&#8221; Vaughn added.
Cash as of February 1 was $34.0 million, compared with $35.2 million as of February 3, 2024. Total debt at the end of the fourth quarter was zero compared with $34.7 million at the end of last year&#8217;s fourth quarter.
Genesco said it achieved the higher-end of its target run-rate range of $45 to $50 million in total expense savings through the cost reduction program that began in fiscal 2024.
Inventories increased&nbsp;12%&nbsp;year over year, reflecting increased inventory for Journeys, Johnston &amp; Murphy, and Genesco Brands, partially offset by a decrease at Schuh.
Outlook: For Fiscal 2026, the company expects total sales to be flat to up 1% compared to fiscal 2025 including a foreign exchange negative impact of approximately $14 million and closed <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">store impact of approximately $30 million.</a>
Genesco sees FY26 adjusted earnings per share from continuing operations in the range of $1.30 &#8211; $1.70 versus $2.35 estimate.

Genesco (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $3.26 per share which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $3.31 by 1.51 percent. This is a 25.87 percent increase over earnings of $2.59 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $745.949 million which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $784.850 million by 4.96 percent. This is a 0.95 percent increase over sales of $738.950 million the same period last year.

Investors await the U.S. jobs report, unemployment rate and hourly wages data for February, slated to be released today.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.26%, while the two-year yield was at 3.95%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is a 91% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

On the economic front, the U.S. reported a record trade deficit of $131.4 billion in January, compared to a revised $98.1 billion gap in the previous month. Unit labor costs in the nonfarm business sector rose 2.2% in the fourth quarter, compared to preliminary expectations of 3%.
Initial jobless claims declined by 21,000 from the previous week to 221,000 during the last week of February, compared to market estimates of 235,000.

Insights From Analysts
While markets have reacted negatively to recent tariff announcements, this suspension could set the stage for a potential market recovery in the medium term, explained Subho Moulik, the founder and CEO of the fintech platform Appreciate.
&#8220;Despite legitimate concerns about inflation and trade uncertainty, U.S. economic fundamentals remain solid with unemployment edging down to 4% and GDP growth still in the positive territory. This economic resilience provides a foundation for market stabilization,&#8221; Moulik added.
According to him, market volatility may persist in the short term, but history demonstrates that strategic navigation of policy-induced corrections can lead to outperformance for investors who maintain discipline and a long-term perspective.
The Nasdaq 100 entered correction territory on Thursday, falling 9.76% from its record high to 20,052.64, and breaking below its 200-day moving average for the first time in nearly two years.
Analyst Jason Goepfert of White Oak Consultancy LLC warned in an X post that a further 3.5% decline within the next two weeks would signal a bear market.
Historically, when the index has broken its 200-day average after a prolonged uptrend and subsequently dropped at least 3.5% within two weeks, a bear market has followed. Conversely, if the index avoids a 3.5% drawdown in the next two weeks, historical data suggests positive one-year returns.

Genesco Reports Q4-To-Date Comparable Sales Increased 10% YoY; Same Store Sales Increased 6% And Sales For The Co's E-Commerce Businesses Increased 20% On A Comparable Basis For That Period

Genesco Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GCO#NYSE">GCO</a>) shares are <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/movers" rel="noreferrer noopener">trading higher on Friday</a> after the company reported third-quarter financial results. It clocked an adjusted earnings per share of 61 cents, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/12/b42360590/genesco-inc-reports-fiscal-2025-third-quarter-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">beating the street view of 29 cents</a>. Quarterly revenues of $596.328 million (+3%) beat the analyst consensus estimate of $577.93 million.
Comparable sales rose 6%, with e-commerce sales up 15% and store sales increasing 4%. E-commerce accounted for 24% of retail sales.
&#8220;This result was driven by the initial phase of Journeys&#8217; strategic growth plan which has focused on elevating the consumer experience including improving the product assortment and visually resetting our stores,&#8221; said Mimi E. Vaughn, Genesco&#8217;s Board Chair.
The overall sales increase for the third quarter was driven by an increase of 4% at Journeys, an increase of 3% at Schuh and a 10% increase at Genesco Brands, partially offset by a decrease of 4% at Johnston &amp; Murphy.&nbsp;

Third quarter gross margin decreased 30 basis points to 47.8% compared with 48.1% last year, due primarily to changes in product mix at Journeys.
Genesco held cash and equivalents of $33.6 million as of November 2, compared with $21.7 million in the year-ago period. At the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2025, total debt was $100.1 million.
The company said it closed 12 Journeys stores in the third quarter (for a total of 41 Journeys stores closed to date in Fiscal 2025) and expects to close up to another 10 Journeys stores in Fiscal 2025.
Outlook: Genesco raised its FY25 adjusted EPS forecast to $0.80-$1.00, compared to the analyst estimate of $0.80 (Prior view: $0.60-$1.00).
Genesco now expects total sales to be flat or down 1% compared to Fiscal 2024. Excluding the 53rd week, sales are expected to be flat to up 1%.
Price Action: GCO shares are up 6.50% to $39.84 at the last check on Friday.
