Freeport-McMoRan owns stakes in 10 copper mines, led by its 49% ownership of the Grasberg copper and gold operations in Indonesia, 55% of the Cerro Verde mine in Peru, and 72% of Morenci in Arizona. It sold around 1.2 million metric tons of copper (its share) in 2024, making it the one of the world's largest copper miners by volume. It also sold about 900,000 ounces of gold, mostly from Grasberg, and 70 million pounds of molybdenum. It had about 25 years of copper reserves at the end of December 2024. We expect it to sell similar amounts of copper midcycle in 2029, though we expect gold volumes to decline to about 700,000 ounces then due to falling production at Grasberg.

Shares of copper-related companies are trading lower ahead of China's Labour Day. The material may also be experiencing weakness due to a contraction in Q1 US GDP.

Wall Street is set for a volatile Wednesday after first-quarter GDP data showed an unexpected economic contraction, stoking fears that a recession <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/45098824/tariffs-hit-hard-as-us-economy-shrinks-for-first-time-since-2022">may already be underway. </a>
The U.S. economy shrank by 0.3% on an annualized basis last quarter, down from 2.4% growth in the previous quarter and well below the expected 0.4% growth, official advance statistics showed.
The outcome marked the first quarterly contraction since the second quarter of 2022. 
In addition, U.S. private employers added 62,000 jobs in April, according to ADP National Employment Report, the lowest since July 2024 and well below predictions of 108,000. 
Broad-based equity losses followed during premarket trading in New York as investors digested signs of weakening growth, elevated inflation, and deteriorating trade balances.
Futures on the S&amp;P 500 fell 1.28% to 5,489.61 by 9:00 a.m. ET, shedding 71 points. 
Contracts on the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 336 points, or 0.8%, to 40,191. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 underperformed, plunging 1.9% to 19,184, while the small-cap Russell 2000 index dropped 1.7% to 1,944.
Recession odds for 2025 climbed to 74%, their highest level yet, according to data from CFTC-regulated betting platform Kalshi. Under Kalshi&#8217;s terms, a $100 bet on a recession now yields $131 if the U.S. sees two consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economists Divided On US Economic Performance</h3>
David Russell, global head of market strategy at TradeStation, noted the growing stagflation risk: "Today's data shows more stagflation, with the economy shrinking and prices rising more than expected. Trade was a huge drag as imports jumped ahead of tariffs. Combined with the weak ADP payrolls growth and yesterday's weak JOLTs data, the numbers increasingly suggest a recession may have begun."
Economist Joseph Brusuelas of RSM US LLP offered a more tempered view: "The trade shock caused a large change in behavior that resulted in that large drag due to a larger trade deficit. However, the economy did not slide into recession in Q1 2025." 
He expects a recession more likely by midyear, citing a $140 billion inventory swing that temporarily padded GDP by 2.25 percentage points.
Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, echoed concerns about the unusual nature of the trade dynamics, calling the current environment "a huge natural experiment," with ballooning imports and swelling inventories reflecting a widespread effort to front-run tariffs.

"This is Biden's Stock Market, not Trump's. I didn't take over until January 20th," Trump wrote on social media X, shortly after the GDP release.
Trump denied that his trade policies were responsible for the weak GDP figures, attributing the slowdown to the economic legacy of President Joe Biden. 
"This will take a while, has nothing to do with tariffs, only that he left us with bad numbers," Trump posted. 
"But when the boom begins, it will be like no other. Be patient!!!"

Copper's average realized price per pound was&nbsp;$4.44, and production totaled 868 million pounds in the&nbsp;first quarter&nbsp;of FY25.
Gold sales were 128 thousand ounces, lower than the January 2025 estimate and down from last year due to the timing of shipments. The average realized price per ounce stood at&nbsp;$3,072&nbsp;in the quarter.&nbsp;
Operating income stood at&nbsp;$1.303 billion versus&nbsp;$1.634 billion a year ago.
Operating cash flow for the quarter totaled&nbsp;$1.06 billion, compared to&nbsp;$1.90 billion a year ago.
As of March 31, Freeport-McMoRan had&nbsp;$4.4 billion in cash and equivalents, and its consolidated debt&nbsp;totaled&nbsp;$9.4 billion.
Kathleen Quirk, president and chief executive officer, said, "We remain vigilant in our efforts to reduce costs, improve efficiencies and carefully manage operating, administrative and capital spending in this uncertain macroeconomic environment."
2025&nbsp;Outlook: Freeport-McMoRan expects sales volumes of 4.0 billion pounds of copper, 1.6 million ounces of gold, and&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">88 million pounds of molybdenum</a>.&nbsp;
Excluding the potential impacts of tariffs, the company projects a decline in its average unit net cash costs (net of by-product credits) for U.S. copper mines for the remainder of 2025 and into 2026, compared to 2024 levels.
This reduction is expected due to efficiencies, higher volumes, and ongoing cost-reduction initiatives.
U.S. copper mine cash costs are projected at ~$3.02/lb for 2025, assuming current sales volumes, cost estimates, and an average molybdenum price of $20.00 per pound for the rest of the year.
The company expects operating cash flows of ~$7 billion and capital expenditure <a target="_blank" href="https://s22.q4cdn.com/529358580/files/doc_presentations/2025/FCX_1Q25_CC.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">of</a> $4.4 billion in 2025.
Freeport estimates that the proposed tariffs could raise the cost of goods it purchases in the U.S. by around 5%, mainly due to the pass-through effect of tariffs incurred by suppliers.

According <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/trump-supporter-prince-reaches-deal-with-congo-help-secure-mineral-wealth-2025-04-17/">to</a> Reuters, he reached the agreement before the M23 rebel group <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/02/43573846/un-warns-about-escalating-conflict-dr-congo-as-rebels-seize-mining-center">launched a major offensive</a> in January 2025 that saw them seize key cities in eastern Congo, including Goma. Two sources close to Prince, a Congolese official, and two diplomats confirmed new discussions, focusing on improving tax collection and reducing cross-border smuggling of valuable minerals.
