Dow shares are trading lower after the company announced it will shut down three European plants, which may result in up to $790 million worth of asset write-downs.

Dow Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DOW#NYSE">DOW</a>) is moving forward with a series of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/07/n46269864/dow-will-shut-down-three-upstream-european-assets-in-response-to-structural-challenges-in-the-regi" rel="noreferrer noopener">strategic asset closures</a> across Europe as part of a broader restructuring plan to boost long-term profitability and streamline global operations.
The decision, approved by the board, involves winding down operations at an ethylene cracker in Böhlen and chlor-alkali and vinyl units in Schkopau, Germany, and a siloxanes facility in Barry, U.K. The closures will begin in mid-2026 and are expected to conclude by late 2027, with decommissioning continuing through 2029.
The restructuring, first <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44978321/dow-posts-surprise-profit-as-volumes-rise-in-q1-but-cash-flow-and-capex-outlook-signal-market-caution" rel="noreferrer noopener">outlined</a> in April, is expected to boost operating EBITDA by approximately $200 million annually by 2029. Dow will spend about $500 million over four years to carry out the changes and expects to take charges of $630 million to $790 million, including severance, asset disposal, and write-downs.

Chair and CEO Jim Fitterling said the actions reflect ongoing efforts to respond to weak market conditions and high costs in Europe. &#8220;We&#8217;re committed to unlocking value from targeted growth projects and strengthening our cash flow with over $6 billion in near-term support,&#8221; he said.
Approximately 800 Dow roles will be impacted as a result of these actions. These roles are in addition to the $1&nbsp;billion cost savings actions&nbsp;announced in January&nbsp;that included a workforce reduction of approximately 1,500 Dow roles globally.
Dow said it will coordinate with local stakeholders and follow legal requirements in each country throughout the process.
The company said the restructuring will reduce its reliance on higher-cost, energy-intensive operations and allow it to focus on more profitable downstream demand.

The shutdown of upstream assets in Europe will right-size regional capacity, reduce merchant sale exposure, and remove higher-cost, energy-intensive portions of Dow's portfolio in the region. This will improve our ability to supply profitable derivative demand and optimize margins.

In April 2025, the Company <a href="https://c212.net/c/link/?t=0&amp;l=en&amp;o=4462893-1&amp;h=1608642756&amp;u=https%3A%2F%2Fs23.q4cdn.com%2F981382065%2Ffiles%2Fdoc_financials%2F2025%2Fq1%2FDow-1Q25-Earnings-News-Release.pdf&amp;a=announced">announced</a>&nbsp;it had identified three assets in Europe for action across all of its operating segments. On June 30, 2025, Dow's Board of Directors approved restructuring actions to rationalize the Company's global asset footprint, including these three assets as part of its European review, and certain corporate and other assets.
Dow's actions to shut down these assets will result in an Operating EBITDA uplift beginning in 2026, ramping to 50% of the approximate $200&nbsp;million target by year-end 2027 with full delivery by 2029, with a cash outlay of approximately $500&nbsp;million over four years.
As a result of these actions, the Company will record charges ranging from $630&nbsp;million to $790&nbsp;million, for both non-cash items—such as asset write-downs and write-offs—and cash items, such as exit and disposal of assets, as well as severance and related benefit costs.
The shutdown of the assets is expected to begin in mid-2026 and is estimated to be complete by the end of 2027, with potential decommissioning and demolition to continue into 2029 as needed.

Dow to Shut European Plants, Will Take Up to $790M Hit as It Eyes $200M Profit Boost by 2029, To Impact 800 Jobs

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mad-money-lightning-round">Mad Money Lightning Round</a>,&#8221; Jim Cramer recommended waiting &#8220;a week&#8221; for Oklo Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OKLO#NYSE">OKLO</a>) and then taking a look at the nuclear technology company.
&#8220;But I am not against <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/06/45974682/oklo-stock-is-rising-again-whats-going-on">Oklo,&#8221; he added.</a>
According to recent news, Oklo announced on June 17 that its subsidiary, Atomic Alchemy, had commenced site characterization work at a potential location for a commercial radioisotope production facility. Oklo announced the start of site characterization activities at the Idaho National Laboratory, which includes core boring and collecting soil and rock samples.
When asked about LyondellBasell Industries N.V. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LYB#NYSE">LYB</a>), Cramer recommended not buying stocks for high dividends. Instead, go with stocks for earnings, momentum and growth.
&#8220;Growth is the only safety in this stock market,&#8221; he adds.
And as for LyondellBasell, or Dow Chemical (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DOW#NYSE">DOW</a>), Cramer doesn&#8217;t see growth.
On June 5, LyondellBasell <a href="https://www.lyondellbasell.com/en/news-events/corporate--financial-news/lyondellbasell-enters-into-an-agreement-and-exclusive-negotiations-with-aequita-for-the-sale-of-four-european-strategic-assessment-assets/">announced</a>, in conjunction with AEQUITA, the sale of its European assets and operations. The price remains undisclosed.
&#8220;They got <a href="https://www.wsj.com/finance/will-doge-take-a-bite-out-of-this-spy-firms-stock-thats-classified-688e1893?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=ASWzDAhV1gT7DMSZSJEvFXb0N4fqXpbIrvFUeLBkmk-jbtle0_qPzIdrhv7iEDbpCEM%3D&amp;gaa_ts=68652cdc&amp;gaa_sig=DxTqaqIprREuU5rlXgukVFOT3IJ3mY7JfyoabZ4h9ppOnZmc_G1r9BDcQaoy_wydLyEFycmNvEg5kLv-Knut7Q%3D%3D">clobbered</a> by DOGE, and we're not done with the clobbering. I think there's more ahead,&#8221; Cramer said when asked about Booz Allen Hamilton Holding Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAH#NYSE">BAH</a>).
Stifel analyst Jonathan Siegmann, on June 24, reinstated Booz Allen Hamilton with a Hold rating and announced a $112 price target.

Across the group, billions were poured into buybacks that cratered in value. With a 58.7% return on buybacks &#8211; and a nearly $8.8 billion edge over the S&amp;P 500 &#8211; the industrial gas giant proved that timing, valuation, and execution still matter.
