Trump's Tariffs Trigger Layoffs: Monopoly Maker Hasbro Slashes Jobs — These Companies Are Cutting Too

The S&amp;P Steel Index is gaining in 2025, buoyed by a combination of tariff leverage, robust balance sheets, and strong returns on capital.
Year to date, the S&amp;P Steel Sub-Industry Index is up 8.40% as of June 12, as the US steel sector stabilizes. It has room to grow over the short term after President Trump's decision to double US steel tariff imports from 25% to 50% as of June 4, 2025, following a new executive order.
But tariffs aren&#8217;t the only reason steel stocks are rising.
The trade policy shift, announced in late May during a rally at a U.S. Steel factory near Pittsburgh, immediately sent steel stocks soaring, with Cleveland-Cliffs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>) rising 26% in a single day following the announcement, while Steel Dynamics (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) and Nucor (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>) saw gains of 10-11%. "The tariffs effectively raise the price floor for steel in the U.S. market by making imported steel significantly more expensive," said Tracy Shuchart, senior economist at NinjaTrader in New York City. "According to market data, benchmark steel prices have already increased from $725 per metric ton before the tariff announcement to $875 per metric ton currently."
It&#8217;s not only tariffs that are supporting steel industry gains.
"Steel's rally is a mix of short-term catalysts and long-term structural forces," said Dan Buckley, chief analyst at DayTrading.com. "US tariffs are boosting expectations for domestic producers, while sustained federal spending on infrastructure and reshoring is aiding durable demand."
"Add in supply chain restocking, auto sector recovery, and disciplined capital returns from top players like Nucor and Steel Dynamics, and the sector is showing a more stable profile," Buckley added.
The tariff portion of that equation may not have a long shelf life, so investors should proceed cautiously. Talks between the U.S. and Mexico are already underway to curb the 50% tariff figure.
"For example, the two countries are exploring a quota system that would allow a specific amount of Mexican steel to enter the U.S. duty-free or at lower rates, with only excess amounts subject to the full 50% levy," Shuchart noted. "This negotiation explains why some steel stocks like Nucor fell 6.1% on June 11, as investors reacted to the possibility of tariff exemptions. The European Union has also strongly opposed the increased tariffs, warning of potential countermeasures."

Investors should factor in other supportive steel sector impactors also driving industry stocks forward. Shuchart points to infrastructure investment, where ongoing and planned infrastructure projects drive demand for steel products across the United States.
Domestic construction activity is up, too, and in high-growth areas.
"Despite higher interest rates, commercial construction remains relatively robust, supporting demand for structural steel," Shuchart said. "Additionally, key steel-consuming industries like automotive and machinery manufacturing have shown surprising resilience in 2025, and the expansion of renewable energy infrastructure requires significant steel inputs, creating a new demand source for the industry.&#8221;

Trading at $121 per share and 4.4% over the past month, Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>), a steel products manufacturer, also offers a sturdy 1.82% dividend yield.
"Despite recent volatility due to potential Mexico tariff negotiations, Nucor remains the premier U.S. steel producer with industry-leading margins, a strong balance sheet, and consistent dividend growth," Shuchar said. "Its EAF production model provides cost flexibility, and its diverse product mix offers exposure to multiple end markets."
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Steel Dynamics</h2>
At $133 per share and with a 1.50% dividend yield, Steel Dynamics (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) is up a healthy 16.7% year to date. However, the stock (like Nucor) is down moderately this week after the US-Mexico tariff negotiations went public. Wall Street is buzzing over those talks, which could center on reducing or even removing the 50% tariffs to a lower amount based on historical trade volumes.
Yet there's a lot to like about Steel Dynamics, which, like Nucor, offers investors operational efficiency and one of the lowest production cost structures in the industry. "The company has been expanding its value-added product portfolio, which should support margins even if base steel prices moderate," Shuchar said.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ArcelorMittal</h2>
Buckley is bullish on the Luxembourg-based ArcelorMittal (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MT#NYSE">MT</a>), which engages in steelmaking and mining activity. "MT adds global diversification" to the manufacturing section of an investment portfolio," Buckley said. MT shares are up 30.6% year to date at $30 per share with a 1.55% dividend yield.
MT could also benefit from Nippon Steel's purchase of US Steel. Under an agreement inked in October 2024, ArcelorMittal is set up to purchase Nippon's 50% share in a joint venture deal for $1. In addition, MT will deep-six $1 billion of joint venture shareholder loans in an agreement that JP Morgan analyst Dominic O'Kane called a "major positive" for ArcelorMittal.

Don't hit any "buy" buttons on steel stocks until you grasp a company's underlying fundamentals, even if the tariff wars seem to be working out in your favor.
Buckley said investors should prioritize key factors with steel companies. In his view, the best steel investments combine:

<li>Cost-efficient production.</li>
<li>Strong returns on capital.</li>
<li>Strong balance sheets (i.e., low net debt, high-interest coverage, ample cash reserves, stable working capital, prudent capital expenditure discipline).</li>
<li>Quality net margins (i.e., a ~5% net margin is a solid baseline for this sector, and a 7- 10% range is excellent).</li>
</ul>
"Industry companies with high-margin, value-added products and sustainable dividend growth are best, rather than chasing commodity pricing volatility compared to the overall market," Buckley said. "Overall, steel stocks are less about chasing trends and more about aligning with the economic security playbook we're seeing as a geopolitical theme."

Stitch Fix reported quarterly losses of six cents per share, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of losses of 11 cents per share. Quarterly revenue came in at $325.02 million, beating the $314.44 million consensus estimate.
Stitch Fix shares jumped 8.4% to $5.19 in the pre-market trading session.

What To Know: The U.S. and Mexico could soon announce an agreement that would see President Donald Trump&#8217;s 50% tariffs on steel imports removed up to a specified amount based on historical trade volumes, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-10/us-and-mexico-near-deal-to-cut-steel-duties-and-cap-imports">Bloomberg</a> reported on Tuesday. 
People familiar with the matter reportedly said Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is leading talks on the potential deal, which would still need to be approved by Trump. Trump negotiated a similar deal during his first term. This time around, the cap on tariff-free trade would reportedly be higher. 
The news comes after Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114599330494282325" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a>&nbsp;at the end of May that he would raise steel tariffs from 25% to 50% in an effort to protect the U.S. steel industry.
"Our steel and aluminum industries are coming back like never before. This will be yet another BIG jolt of great news for our wonderful steel and aluminum workers," Trump said in a post on Truth Social last month. 
Several steel stocks were trading lower in Tuesday&#8217;s after-hours session following the news, led by Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>), which was down 7.86% at last check. Nucor Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>) shares were down about 5.76% and shares of Steel Dynamics Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) were sliding about 2.85% at the time of publication, per <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>. United States Steel Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/X#NYSE">X</a>), which is expected to be acquired by Japan&#8217;s Nippon Steel Corp, was down about 0.20%.
Bloomberg reported that the U.S. imported about 3.2 million metric tons of steel from Mexico in 2024.

<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/best-steel-stocks">Steel stocks are</a> back in the spotlight, and it's not just the furnaces heating up. Since President Donald Trump's late-May announcement of 50% tariffs on imported steel, the sector has re-rated sharply, with JPMorgan highlighting Nucor Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>) as the top pick with a potential 67% upside.
Analyst Bill Peterson says Nucor is best positioned to ride out the latest tariff wave, thanks to its product diversification and lower exposure to value-add sheet, which has recently underperformed. Plate and rebar prices, where Nucor has more skin in the game, are holding up stronger and could provide incremental upside heading into 2026.

The broader sector isn't celebrating just yet. Investors remain cautious, sensing tariff exemptions may still be on the table &#8211; particularly for USMCA partners Canada and Mexico. But that hasn&#8217;t stopped a short-term pop: NUE is up 10% since the tariffs were announced, outpacing Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>), Steel Dynamics Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) and Commercial Metals Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CMC#NYSE">CMC</a>).
JPMorgan isn't expecting a summer rally for steel prices. However, the bank sees a firming price floor, especially with scrap costs easing and mill utilization rising.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Nucor Leads The Pack?</h2>
Under a scenario with hot-rolled coil stabilizing at $925/ton and rebar near $900/ton, Peterson sees Nucor pulling ahead of the pack. 
Utilization upside also favors Nucor, which was running at 80% in the first quarter—compared to Steel Dynamics&#8217; 89% and U.S. Steel Corp's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/X#NYSE">X</a>) Flat-Rolled division&#8217;s just 65%.
Steel investors are now facing a tale of two narratives: near-term caution versus long-term potential. 
For Peterson, the long game still favors Nucor, especially if the tariffs hold and restocking kicks in later this year.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Steel Tariffs Could Add $200-$400 To Per Vehicle Cost</h2>
Tracy Shuchart of NinjaTrader says these fears are justified. &#8220;Steel and aluminum represent 15–20% of total vehicle production costs,&#8221; she said in exclusive insights shared with Benzinga over an email interview. &#8220;For a typical mid-size sedan, we&#8217;re looking at roughly $800–$1,200 in steel content per vehicle. A 50% tariff could easily add $200–400 to vehicle production costs.&#8221;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Ford, GM Investors Should Brace For Impact?</h2>
Ford and GM are particularly vulnerable because of their long-term supply agreements with Canadian steelmakers, who now face full tariffs. While domestic producers celebrate, automakers will need to renegotiate contracts, seek alternative supply chains, or pass costs onto consumers &#8211; a tough sell in an already competitive EV market.
&#8220;Ford and GM are particularly vulnerable because they source significant steel volumes from Canada under existing supply agreements that will now face the full tariff impact,&#8221; Shuchart said.
Investors who believe these pressures may persist might consider short-term hedges or adding exposure to raw material producers like Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>) and Steel Dynamics Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) instead.
For ETF-watchers, the Global X U.S. Infrastructure Development ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PAVE#NYSE">PAVE</a>) offers a blend of industrials and materials exposure that may benefit from rising domestic steel prices.

Steel tariffs are back with a bang, and investors are already positioning for the winners. As the U.S. slaps a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/topics/25/05/45708977/trump-doubles-steel-tariffs-to-50-saying-it-will-secure-american-jobs-backs-us-steels-takeover-by-japans-nippon" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">prohibitive 50% tariff</a> on imported steel and aluminum, Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>), Nucor Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>) and Steel Dynamics Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STLD#NASDAQ">STLD</a>) are emerging as the early champions of this protectionist pivot.
According to Tracy Shuchart, senior economist at NinjaTrader, the tariff surge is a short-term policy maneuver, but it brings long-term opportunities for domestic producers. &#8220;At 50%, these tariffs are reaching what economists call prohibitive levels—they&#8217;re so high that they fundamentally distort market mechanisms rather than simply providing competitive protection,&#8221; Shuchart said in an exclusive email interview with Benzinga.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariffs To Benefit Cleveland, Nucor, Steel Dynamics&#8217; Margins</h2>
Cleveland-Cliffs saw a 25.2% gain in early trading after the announcement, not just on sentiment but solid fundamentals. The company is heavily exposed to imports, particularly in flat-rolled products, and now has room to raise prices by $200-300 per ton while still staying competitive. 
&#8220;Cliffs can immediately implement price increases of $200–300 per ton while still remaining competitive,&#8221; Shuchart added.
Nucor, with its low-cost electric arc furnace model, is positioned to expand its already solid margins. Its scale, cost discipline, and flexible mini-mill network could boost EBITDA margins to the 18–20% range over the next 12–18 months. &#8220;With import competition effectively removed, Nucor can maintain its cost advantage while capturing significantly higher margins,&#8221; Shuchart said.
Meanwhile, Steel Dynamics, which had ventured into aluminum production, now looks prophetic. With both steel and aluminum tariffs rising, Steel Dynamics&#8217;s dual exposure could unlock a new wave of pricing power. &#8220;This diversification strategy, which seemed risky 18 months ago, now looks prescient,&#8221; said Shuchart.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Broad-Market Beneficiaries</h2>
Investors looking to ride the broader wave may also consider steel-focused ETFs like the VanEck Steel ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLX#NYSE">SLX</a>) or the SPDR S&amp;P Metals and Mining ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XME#NYSE">XME</a>), which offer diversified exposure to these names.
While these gains are real, Shuchart cautions this is not a forever story. Structural supply gaps and midterm politics could force a policy rethink by late 2025. 
But for now, domestic steel stocks stand to gain, and this trio is leading the charge.

U.S. stocks were mixed, with the Dow Jones index falling around 200 points on Monday.
Shares of Vera Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VERA#NASDAQ">VERA</a>) rose sharply during Monday's session after the company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/health-care/25/06/45720783/kidney-health-focused-vera-therapeutics-stock-price-spikes-on-heels-of-successful-trial-data">released ORIGIN Phase 3 trial data.</a>
Participants treated with atacicept for immunoglobulin A nephropathy (IgAN) achieved a 46% reduction from baseline in proteinuria as measured by 24-hour urine protein-to-creatinine ratio (UPCR), with a statistically significant and clinically meaningful 42% reduction in UPCR compared to placebo (p&lt;0.0001) at week 36.
Vera Therapeutics shares jumped 56.6% to $29.67 on Monday.

<li>Blueprint Medicines Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BPMC#NASDAQ">BPMC</a>) gained 26.2% to $127.93 after the company announced that Sanofi will acquire them for $9.5 billion.</li>
<li>Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>) gained 23.2% to $7.18 after Trump said he would double their tariffs to 50%.</li>
<li>Century Aluminum Company (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CENX#NASDAQ">CENX</a>) rose 22% to $18.89 after Trump said he would double their tariffs to 50%.</li>
<li>Liquidia Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LQDA#NASDAQ">LQDA</a>) gained 18.2% to $17.64 after the company announced it began shipping its newly FDA-approved Yutrepia. Additionally, Needham raised its price target on the stock from $25 to $32.</li>
<li>REGENXBIO Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RGNX#NASDAQ">RGNX</a>) jumped 16.4% to $10.30.</li>
<li>Tempus AI, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TEM#NASDAQ">TEM</a>) gained 14.1% to $62.95 after the company introduced its fuses program for precision-based medicine and xM for advanced cancer treatment response monitoring.</li>
<li>First Majestic Silver Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AG#NYSE">AG</a>) rose 10.6% to $6.83.</li>

<li>Nucor Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NUE#NYSE">NUE</a>) gained 10% to $120.20. BMO Capital analyst Katja Jancic upgraded Nucor from Market Perform to Outperform and raised the price target from $140 to $145.</li>
<li>ImmunityBio, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IBRX#NASDAQ">IBRX</a>) rose 6.2% to $2.8250. ImmunityBio received FDA expanded access authorization for the treatment of Lymphopenia with ANKTIVA in patients with solid tumors</li>

Vera Therapeutics, Applied Digital, Kymera Therapeutics And Other Big Stocks Moving Higher On Monday

Cleveland-Cliffs Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CLF#NYSE">CLF</a>) shares are soaring Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans to double <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/topics/25/05/45708977/trump-doubles-steel-tariffs-to-50-saying-it-will-secure-american-jobs-backs-us-steels-takeover-by-japans-nippon">tariffs on steel</a>.
What Happened: Trump <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114599330494282325">announced</a> on Friday that he would increase steel tariffs from 25% to 50% in an effort to protect the U.S. steel industry. 
&#8220;Our steel and aluminum industries are coming back like never before. This will be yet another BIG jolt of great news for our wonderful steel and aluminum workers,&#8221; Trump said in a post on Truth Social.
The move has added to global trade tensions. The European Commission said over the weekend that Europe was prepared to retaliate against the tariff hike, per Reuters. 
Trump said the 25% tariff increases on steel and aluminum would take effect on Wednesday. Cleveland-Cliffs shares were up more than 25% on the news. Shares of Steel Dynamics and Nucor were also up about 11% each at last check, according to <a href="http://pro.benzinga.com">Benzinga Pro</a>. The VanEck Steel ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLX#NYSE">SLX</a>) was up 3.10% at the time of publication.
