Shaq, who famously torched his first million-dollar check on flashy cars and jewelry, admits he didn't know the first thing about taxes, saving, or investing when he was drafted. BofA Securities analysts Bryan D. Spillane, Lisa K. Lewandowski and Peter T. Galbo have put forward on Tuesday their research findings on consumer staple companies in the face of a potential recession.
The analysts said consumer staples have historically outperformed the S&amp;P 500 in most recent recessions, suggesting a defensive edge.
However, the analysts warned that current conditions, such as lingering high prices and weak volume growth, may limit their resilience in a future downturn.

Still, their limited exposure to new tariffs could make the sector more appealing than others, potentially helping sustain valuation multiples.
During recessions, the Consumer Staples sector stock prices are primarily influenced by earnings per share (EPS) rather than sales growth.
Analysis shows that forward EPS estimates account for over 90% of stock price movement across key subsectors like Beverages, Household &amp; Personal Care (HPC), Packaged Food, and Tobacco, with the correlation being the tightest Beverages and HPC.
The analysts noted that this highlights the critical importance of earnings strength when evaluating stock performance in uncertain economic conditions.
A review of six past recessions reveals that certain Consumer Staples stocks consistently outperformed the S&amp;P 500.
Campbell Soup Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NYSE">CPB</a>), Colgate-Palmolive Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CL#NYSE">CL</a>), General Mills Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GIS#NYSE">GIS</a>), McCormick &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MKC#NYSE">MKC</a>), PepsiCo Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PEP#NASDAQ">PEP</a>), and Hormel Foods Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HRL#NYSE">HRL</a>) each posted a 100% success rate in outperforming the index during those downturns.
In the last four recessions with the most comprehensive data, McCormick, General Mills, and Church &amp; Dwight Co. Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CHD#NYSE">CHD</a>) delivered the strongest relative performance.
Top-performing Consumer Staples stocks in a potential downturn will likely share three traits: profit flexibility to offset revenue pressure and rising costs, strong U.S. manufacturing presence to limit tariff-related inflation, and solid balance sheets capable of sustaining share buybacks to boost earnings per share.
Analysts see McCormick, Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>) and Philip Morris International Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PM#NYSE">PM</a>) as well-defended, with Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KDP#NASDAQ">KDP</a>), Molson Coors Beverage Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAP#NYSE">TAP</a>) and Altria Group Inc. This Beverage Maker, Tobacco Company And Packaged Food Giant Outshine In A Recession

President Donald Trump&#8217;s tariff announcements led to a sell-off in the stock market and prompted investors to move to safer assets such as Treasury bonds. The 10-year Treasury yield declined and the average 30-year fixed mortgage rate dropped from 6.75% to<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/04/44695176/president-trump-is-fixing-america-grant-cardone-says-wants-you-to-invest-in-real-estate-invest-in-america"> 6.55% last week. </a>
Mortgage Rates: Despite the initial drop, mortgage rates rebounded as Treasury yields ticked back up. On Monday, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage surged to 6.82%, marking the largest single-day increase of the year.&nbsp;

Home Sales: Pending home sales ticked higher in early April with 72,000 newly pending single-family home sales and 15,000 condo transactions last week — the highest weekly volume since late April 2024, <a href="https://www.nar.realtor/research-and-statistics">according</a> to the National Association of Realtors. 
"Despite the modest monthly increase, contract signings remain well below normal historical levels," said Lawrence Yun, NAR's chief economist.&nbsp;
"A meaningful decline in mortgage rates would help both demand and supply — demand by boosting affordability and supply by lessening the power of the mortgage rate lock-in effect."
Buyer Demand: Recent mortgage rate stability encouraged buyers, with purchase applications reaching their highest growth rate since late 2023 in early April. However, Trump's new tariff policies and China's retaliation have reintroduced uncertainty and volatility to the stock market and mortgage rates. 
"The spring housing season is beginning with more sellers and a growing number of homes for sale," said Danielle Hale, chief economist at Realtor.com.
"But the high cost of buying coupled with growing economic concerns suggest a sluggish response from buyers in early spring," Hale added.&nbsp;
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">Inventory and Pricing Trends</h1>

<li>Price Reductions: The number of homes on the market with price reductions ticked up in the first week of April to 34.3%. </li>

A federal judge on Tuesday ordered the White House to temporarily lift access restrictions it imposed on the Associated Press, pending the outcome of a lawsuit filed by the news organization.
The restrictions, in place since Feb. 11, had barred AP reporters from Oval Office events, Air Force One flights and other official functions, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2025/04/08/associated-press-white-house-ban-lifted/">reported </a>the Washington Post.
The dispute centers on the White House's demand that the AP use the term "Gulf of America" rather than "Gulf of Mexico" in its coverage. The AP declined, citing editorial independence, and filed a lawsuit on Feb. 21 against three Trump administration officials, claiming viewpoint discrimination.
U.S. District Judge Trevor N. McFadden sided with the AP, ruling that the government cannot exclude journalists from press events based on their editorial decisions. While the judge delayed enforcement of the ruling for five days to allow for administrative response, he was clear in his stance.
"If the Government opens its doors to some journalists… it cannot then shut those doors to other journalists because of their viewpoints," McFadden wrote. "The Constitution requires no less."
McFadden found the AP likely to succeed on the merits of its First Amendment claims. Testimony from AP's chief photographer and White House correspondent described how the ban hindered the organization's competitiveness and slowed its news gathering — concerns the judge deemed credible.
He also criticized the administration's "brazen" justification for the ban, rooted in the AP's continued use of "Gulf of Mexico."
AP spokesperson Lauren Easton praised the ruling, calling it a victory for press freedom. "Today's ruling affirms the fundamental right of the press and public to speak freely without government retaliation," she said.
The White House has not issued a response as of publication Tuesday.
