Top 2 Defensive Stocks That Are Ticking Portfolio Bombs

The Aluminium Association of Canada (AAC) has condemned the U.S. government's move to impose a 50% tariff on Canadian <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/aluminum" rel="noreferrer noopener">aluminum</a>, calling it a protectionist misfire that risks destabilizing North America's integrated manufacturing base and driving higher inflation across key sectors.
"A 50% tariff on Canadian aluminum will suppress demand across the continent — whether the metal is produced in Canada or the U.S.," Jean Simard, AAC's president and CEO, <a target="_blank" href="https://aluminium.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/06/AAC_PRESS-RELEASE_US-Tariffs_50_June-3-2025_FINAL.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> in a press release.
"It will impact workers on both sides of the border and disrupt key sectors including defense, construction, and automotive," he stated.
The tariff, enacted last Wednesday following an executive order from President Donald Trump, effectively prices Canadian exports out of the U.S. market at $1,349.50 per metric ton. Simard warned that the move may force Canadian producers to reorient trade toward the European Union and away from their most critical industrial partner.
Food packaging is among the industries most exposed to these tariffs, as large companies such as Campbell Soup (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPB#NASDAQ">CPB</a>) and Coca-Cola (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KO#NYSE">KO</a>) heavily rely on aluminum for their products.
The domestic Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI) also responded to Trump's decision, pointing out how aluminum and tinplate steel tariffs would hurt American families.
"Doubling the steel tariff will further increase the cost of canned goods at the grocery store," CMI president Robert Budway <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cancentral.com/can-manufacturers-institute-opposes-president-trumps-doubling-of-steel-tariffs/" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> on May 30. "These metal tariffs put our nation's food security at risk."
Nine domestic mill production lines have closed since the original 2018 tariffs on tin mill steel, leaving only three operational facilities. Thus, the domestic industry relies on roughly 80% of tin mill steel imports and a significant portion of aluminum.
Canada annually ships 2.7 million metric tons of aluminum to the U.S., much of which is transformed into beverage cans, canned food containers, and consumer packaging.
That raw material supports over 700,000 American manufacturing jobs, while Canada's aluminum sector directly employs 9,500 workers. Combined, the binational aluminum value chain contributes more than $228 billion annually to the U.S. economy.
Thanks to its abundant hydropower, Canada produces low-carbon aluminum at a cost and emissions profile that is far below that of many of its global competitors. That energy benefit is enormous — equivalent to 40 million megawatt-hours per year, or the annual output of four Hoover Dams.
Simrad noted that the Canadian industry supports the U.S. goal of increasing domestic aluminum production capacity from 50% to 80% of national demand, but added that tariffs undermine the investment certainty needed to build that capacity.
"Even if U.S. output doubles, it will still be a net importer," he said.
Instead, the AAC and CMI urge the U.S. to target the real threat: subsidized overcapacity from China. Canada already leads the world in aluminum traceability and anti-dumping enforcement. "Canadian aluminum is not — and will not be — a backdoor for unfair trade," Simard stated. "Undermining a trusted partner only weakens the foundation we both stand on."

US Aluminum Tariffs Risk Supply Chain And Food Security, Industry Insiders Warn

Silicon Valley giants and at least one iconic Detroit auto manufacturer are gearing up for a corporate homecoming—<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/management/25/04/44597023/trumps-tariffs-could-spark-reshoring-boom-for-these-4-us-stocks">or so they say</a>.
According to Charles Schwab Chief Investment Strategist Liz Ann Sonders, citing Bloomberg data, talk of "reshoring" among S&amp;P 500 and Russell 3000 companies is hitting &#8220;unprecedented&#8221; levels.

It didn&#8217;t last long. By 2019, under the first Trump administration, Apple <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-moves-mac-pro-production-to-china-11561728769">moved</a> production back to China, underscoring its dependence on the highly trained, low-cost workforce and massive infrastructure.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Nvidia</h2>
Nvidia Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) CEO Jensen Huang recently <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/3fd3a717-2fbf-42ef-bb08-5baecdeb1985">told the Financial Times</a> that the goal is to procure &#8220;half a trillion dollars worth of electronics in total&#8221; and manufacture &#8220;several hundred billion of it&#8221; <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44799936/nvidia-to-build-500b-ai-infrastructure-in-us-in-the-next-four-years-details">in the U.S.</a>
The initiative includes AI chip facilities and supercomputing infrastructure—fueled by supply chain worries, tariffs, and the AI arms race.
In April, Nvidia had already started producing its Blackwell AI GPUs at a Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) plant in Phoenix, Arizona. 
Talks for that initiative reportedly <a href="https://www.reuters.com/technology/tsmc-talks-with-nvidia-ai-chip-production-arizona-sources-say-2024-12-05/">began</a> in 2024. 
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">TSMC</h2>
Meanwhile, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is also planning to double down in Arizona and intends to spend $100 billion more on domestic chip fabs. 
The chipmaker promised to manufacture semiconductors in the U.S. thanks partly to Biden-era incentives. Last year, TSMC chief executive C.C. Wei expressed support for the CHIPS and Science Act, which provides incentives for semiconductor manufacturing in the U.S. 
In March, it announced plans to spend <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44103610/taiwan-semiconductor-doubles-down-on-us-chipmaking-165-billion-investment-set-to-reshape-tech-jobs">up to $165 billion</a> when the Trump administration threatened higher taxes and steep tariffs.

For companies like Legacy Precision Molds in Michigan, <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/articles/2025/04/american-businesses-rally-behind-president-trumps-tariffs-to-save-manufacturing/">quote activity is heating</a> up thanks to recent tariff tailwinds.

Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BUD#NYSE">BUD</a>) shares are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket">trading higher in premarket</a> on Thursday after the first-quarter FY25 earnings.
The company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/b45275867/ab-inbev-reports-first-quarter-2025-results">reported a first-quarter revenue </a>decline of 6.3% year-on-year to $13.63 billion, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $13.78 billion.
On an Organic basis, total volumes declined by 2.2%, with own beer volumes down by 2.5% and non-beer volumes seeing a 0.2% decline. Revenue per hl grew 3.7%.

Gross profit expanded 5.2% organically to $7.58 billion, and gross margin expanded 203 basis points to 55.6%.
Normalized EBITDA for the quarter grew 7.9% organically&nbsp;to $4.85 billion, with the margin expanding 218 basis points to 35.6%.
The underlying profit for the quarter was $1.606 billion compared to $1.509 billion last year. Underlying EPS of $0.81 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">beat the consensus </a>estimate of $0.74.
&#8220;Beer is a passion point for consumers. The strength of the beer category and the continued momentum of our megabrands delivered another quarter of profitable growth," said CEO Michel Doukeris.
Outlook: Anheuser-Busch InBev expects its FY24 EBITDA to grow in line with its medium-term outlook of 4%- 8%. FY25 capital expenditures are anticipated to be $3.5 billion—$4 billion.
Price Action: BUD shares traded higher by 1.8% at $66.70 in premarket at last check Thursday.

Why Budweiser Parent Anheuser-Busch InBev's Stock Is Rising Today?

U.S. stock futures rose on Thursday after two days of advance on Wednesday. Futures of major benchmark indices were higher in premarket.
This followed the Federal Reserve&#8217;s <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/05/45266366/powell-flags-sharp-tariff-shock-elevated-uncertainty-fed-sticks-to-wait-and-see-mode">decision to hold the interest rate</a> steady at 4.25% to 4.5% on Wednesday. 
"The tariff increases announced so far have been significantly larger than anticipated," Fed Chair Jerome Powell said.
He noted that if the tariffs are sustained, they could lead to higher inflation, weaker growth, and a rise in unemployment, directly undermining the Fed&#8217;s dual mandate.
"We don&#8217;t think we need to be in a hurry. We are going to be watching the data. It may move quickly or slowly. But we&#8217;re well-positioned to wait," he said.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.31% and the two-year bond was at 3.82%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 79.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its June meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, rose in premarket on Thursday. The SPY was up 1.14% to $567.54, while the QQQ advanced 1.51% to $490.61, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From Last Session:
Leading the gains among sectors in the S&amp;P 500 on Wednesday were health care, consumer discretionary, and information technology stocks, as most sectors closed positively.
Bucking this trend were communication services and materials stocks, which finished the session lower.
In company news, Uber Technologies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NYSE">UBER</a>) reported first-quarter revenue that fell short of expectations, while Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) announced positive fiscal second-quarter 2025 results on Wednesday.
On the economic front, U.S. mortgage application volumes saw an 11% increase from the prior week for the week ending May 2nd.

One of the cynical reasons why Anheuser-Busch could keep inching forward is that the tariffs may impose disproportionate hardships on the competition. A clear example of this is Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STZ#NYSE">STZ</a>), which owns the U.S. distribution rights of the Corona beer brand, a consequence of an <a href="https://www.justice.gov/archives/opa/pr/justice-department-reaches-settlement-anheuser-busch-inbev-and-grupo-modelo-beer-case">antitrust</a> settlement.
At the time, Anheuser-Busch giving up the U.S. distribution rights for a popular Mexican beer was a significant hit. Today, under the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44118620/whats-driving-markets-tuesday">threat of an ugly trade war</a>, not having to deal with potentially sharp price hikes for Corona is a blessing.
Another catalyst for BUD stock stems from the core business itself. Anheuser-Busch specializes in low-cost beer and that's a powerfully relevant offering amid an environment of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/25/02/43499935/worldwide-57-expect-the-next-generation-to-be-worse-off-financially-what-drives-this-economic-pessimism">brewing economic challenges</a>. Now, it's true that the company's Bud Light brand got knocked off the top of the U.S. beer sales ranking. However, the current <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/07/18/food/bud-light-michelob-ultra-sales/index.html">top</a> seller — the Constellation-distributed Modelo Especial — faces tariff risks.
Even statistical trends seem to favor a position in BUD stock. Ordinarily, using data since January 2019, the security carries a neutral to slightly negative bias. That's because a position held for eight weeks carries a baseline probability of upside success of 49.52% — essentially a coin toss.

However, under the dynamic conditions of sizable momentum (defined as a weekly return between 5% to 10%), the subsequent eight weeks commands long odds of 57.14%. In the past five sessions, BUD is up around 5.4%.
Finally, BUD stock is on a streak of seven consecutive up weeks. Over the past six years, such streaks have only materialized three times. Investors shouldn't read too much into this but so far, this streak has yet to see a trend reversal in the eighth week.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Setting Up an Options Strategy for Anheuser-Busch</h2>
From a psychological and technical perspective, the bulls will likely push for the $70 level. This threshold represents prior resistance. In addition, it's also close to Wall Street <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BUD/analyst-ratings">analysts' consensus price target</a> of $70.60. However, the time necessary for BUD stock to reach this level represents a significant component of the speculation.
Running a guided Monte Carlo simulation based on market realistic dynamics, it's possible that BUD could reach $67.54 by the options chain expiring April 17. For extremely aggressive investors, one could consider the 62.50/67.50 bull call spread.
This transaction involves buying the $62.50 call (at a $205 ask) and simultaneously selling the $67.50 call (at a $40 bid). The sale of the short call will partially offset the debit of the long call, leading to a net debit paid of $165 at time of writing. Subtracting this figure from the difference in the strike prices (multiplied by 100 shares) comes out to a maximum reward of $335 should BUD reach or exceed the short strike price. This would translate to a payout of 203%.
