Shares of oil and energy companies are trading lower as oil drops following a report suggesting Iran wants to de-escalate Israel hostilities.

Energy stocks, with BP PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BP#NYSE">BP</a>) among the leaders, are trading higher Friday as crude oil prices head for their strongest weekly rally since <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/06/45924154/the-120-oil-shock-just-became-a-real-risk-are-we-back-in-2022">October 2022</a>. The surge is a direct market reaction to escalating geopolitical turmoil in the Middle East, where fears of a major supply crunch are growing.
What To Know: The catalyst was a series of major Israeli airstrikes targeting Iran's nuclear and missile infrastructure, which also reportedly killed top military officials. This aggressive military action has reignited fears of a broader conflict that could threaten vital oil flows throughout the region. 
Traders are particularly concerned about <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/politics/25/06/45922022/trump-issues-stark-warning-to-iran-to-make-a-deal-after-israels-strikes-on-nuclear-sites-just-do-it-before-its-too-late">potential disruptions</a> to the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime chokepoint that handles nearly one-third of all global seaborne crude shipments. ING analyst Warren Patterson <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/06/45924154/the-120-oil-shock-just-became-a-real-risk-are-we-back-in-2022">suggested</a> a serious disruption could push oil to $120 per barrel. This bullish sentiment for crude has directly lifted the valuations of major oil producers.

Shares of energy stocks are trading higher following Israel's strikes on Iran, which have raised oil prices amid potential disruptions in production.

BP PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BP#NYSE">BP</a>) announced on Tuesday that it is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bp.com/en/global/corporate/news-and-insights/press-releases/bp-deepens-and-progresses-in-azerbaijan-with-go-ahead-for-new-major-project-and-exploration-access.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">advancing a major development phase</a> for the Shah Deniz gas field in Azerbaijan and gaining access to new exploration blocks, strengthening its long-term partnership with the country and state oil company SOCAR.
The agreements, signed during Baku Energy Week, include the $2.9 billion Shah Deniz Compression project and linked solar and electrification initiatives at the Sangachal terminal to cut emissions and boost gas production.
BP, with a 29.999% stake in Shah Deniz, will install an unmanned compression platform to tap low-pressure gas reserves, adding about 50 billion cubic meters of gas and 25 million barrels of condensate, with production expected to start in 2029.

The company also approved a 240MW solar plant in Azerbaijan&#8217;s Jabrayil district to supply power to the Sangachal terminal, reducing fuel gas use and operational emissions.
BP also secured operator rights with a 35% interest in two Caspian Sea blocks, including the Karabagh oil field and Ashrafi-Dan Ulduzu-Aypara area, while Turkey&#8217;s TPAO took a 30% stake in the Shafag-Asiman block, accelerating development after gas condensate was discovered in 2021.
BP has operated in Azerbaijan for over 33 years, leading major fields and export pipelines. Gordon Birrell, BP&#8217;s EVP of Production &amp; Operations, said the company aims to grow upstream production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030, partly driven by these projects.
The Shah Deniz Compression project is among eight to ten major developments BP expects to bring online between 2028 and 2030, supporting its growth and environmental goals. The exploration agreements also boost BP&#8217;s reserves replacement efforts, targeting near 100% replacement by 2027.

BP Strengthens Azerbaijan Ties With Major Gas Project, New Exploration

bp, together with its partners, has entered into a series of agreements that will build and expand on its major oil and gas interests in Azerbaijan, paving the way for growth and additional production while deepening its partnership with the country and state oil company, SOCAR.
 The agreements, signed during Baku Energy Week, include the final investment decisions for the next major phase of development of the giant Shah Deniz gas field – Shah Deniz Compression – as well as for two projects – for terminal electrification and solar power – that together are expected to enable operational emissions reduction. They also include agreements for bp to access to two new exploration and development licences and introduce a new partner to accelerate exploration on a third.

BP p.l.c. This milestone was achieved through the secure connection of the initial discovery well. This development features a 12-slot, attended facility situated in acreage jointly licensed by bpTT and EOG, located off Trinidad&#8217;s southeast coast.
Mento is one of bp&#8217;s 10 major projects slated to commence worldwide between 2025 and 2027, as part of bp&#8217;s broader strategy to expand its upstream operations.
Production from Mento is expected to contribute significantly to the 250,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boed) combined peak net production anticipated from these 10 projects.
bpTT president David Campbell said, &#8220;For bpTT, this represents our second start up this year and it is tangible proof of the benefits of partnering with others to bring much needed gas into production. LONDON, May 22(Reuters) - BP <a href="https://workspace.refinitiv.com/web/apps/quotewebapi?RIC=BP.L">BP.L</a> has kicked off the sale of its more than a century-old <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL3N3PO0ZX">Castrol</a> lubricants business, according to two people with knowledge of the process, in a key step in the British energy group's divestment plan to boost its share price.
BP hired investment bank Goldman Sachs to sell the unit, the sources said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the matter is private. The group has already contacted potential private equity and strategic bidders and distributed an information memorandum to them, one of the people said.
The group said in February it was reviewing Castrol as part of a plan to raise $20 billion by 2027 via asset sales to <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL3N3PH0RN">reduce</a> its debt.
In March Reuters reported that Saudi Aramco <a href="https://workspace.refinitiv.com/web/apps/quotewebapi?RIC=2222.SE">2222.SE</a> was one of the parties <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL3N3PO0ZX">considering</a> a potential bid for the business, but the start of the sale process and Goldman Sachs' hiring have not been reported yet.
The sale could raise between $8 billion and $10 billion based on Castrol's projected core earnings (EBITDA) of $1 billion for 2024, a second person said.
Responding to a Reuters query, BP did not comment on the details of Castrol's sale but said its divestment programme was progressing and it had already signed agreements for the first $1.5 billion of its $20 billion target.
"To position us for growth and reduce net debt, we are reallocating capital and driving greater focus in our portfolio, including through the strategic review of Castrol," the company said in a statement.
Goldman Sachs declined to comment.
Analysts at Bernstein said earlier this month that Castrol, which ranks as the world's third-largest standalone lubricants business behind those of Shell and ExxonMobil, could potentially fetch $10-$11 billion.
Investors have put <a href="reuters://REALTIME/verb=NewsStory/ric=nL3N3PB169">pressure</a> on BP to improve profitability after its shares underperformed rivals, reflecting concerns it had put too much emphasis on renewable energy under former CEO Bernard Looney.
BP's shares have lost around a quarter of their value in the last 12 months, more than double the drop suffered by rival Shell <a href="https://workspace.refinitiv.com/web/apps/quotewebapi?RIC=SHEL.L">SHEL.L</a>.
While reducing overall investments, current CEO Murray Auchincloss has hiked spending on oil and gas and slashed BP's low-carbon budget.
BP's strategy is in the spotlight after activist investor Elliott Management took a stake in the company, and has been

Greene serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability and the House Committee on Homeland Security with several subcommittee appointments. The congresswoman's past trade in technology and cybersecurity stocks has drawn attention with her role within Homeland Security.
Greene&#8217;s past trades of Palantir Technologies and a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44255172/marjorie-taylor-greene-buys-more-bitcoin-etf-shares-ahead-of-trumps-strategic-reserve-executive-order"> Bitcoin ETF </a>have drawn criticism along with the timing of her trades, as she is a close ally to President Donald Trump. 
When asked previously about buying stocks earlier this year that soared days later after Trump announced a pause to tariffs, Greene<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/04/44852406/marjorie-taylor-greene-brushes-off-stock-buying-criticism-says-portfolio-manager-bought-the-dip"> brushed aside the criticism.</a>
&#8220;I think that criticism is laughable. President Trump has been talking about tariffs for decades,&#8221; Greene told reporters when asked about the trades at a recent town hall event in Georgia in a clip <a href="https://x.com/unusual_whales/status/1912456434081480777" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shared </a>by Unusual Whales. The congresswoman used the opportunity to boast about her stock performance, which ranked her as one of the top trading members of Congress in 2024.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t place my buys and sells," Greene said, citing an agreement she has with her portfolio manager, who handles all the buying and selling of stocks. &#8220;He did a great job. Guess what he did. He bought the dip. And that&#8217;s what anybody that has financial sense does."
Greene also said her portfolio manager did not have inside information, everything was public and a potential tariff pause wasn&#8217;t a secret.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has reintroduced legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading or holding individual stocks.
The bill is known as the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments Act, or PELOSI Act based on the first letter of each of the main words. The name takes aim at the congresswoman and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).  
&#8220;Members of Congress should be fighting for the people they were elected to serve — not day trading at the expense of their constituents,&#8221; Hawley&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/hawley-reintroduces-pelosi-act-to-ban-congress-from-trading-stocks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>. &#8220;Americans have seen politician after politician turn a profit using information not available to the general public.&#8221;
Hawley said the bill will help &#8220;restore Americans&#8217; trust in our nation&#8217;s legislative body.&#8221;
Hawley&#8217;s bill is being reintroduced as President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://time.com/7280114/donald-trump-2025-interview-transcript/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said&nbsp;</a>he would support such a ban.
&#8220;Well, I watched Nancy Pelosi get rich through insider information, and I would be okay with it. If they send it to me, I would do it,&#8221; Trump told TIME.
Trump said he would sign the ban if the bill passes Congress.

BP P.L.C. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BP#NYSE">BP</a>) shares are trading higher Monday following a report suggesting Shell PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHEL#NYSE">SHEL</a>) is considering acquiring the company.
What To Know: According to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-05-05/bp-rises-after-shell-is-said-to-study-merits-of-an-acquisition?embedded-checkout=true">Bloomberg</a>, Shell is evaluating a potential acquisition of BP, but waiting for further stock and oil price declines before making a final decision.
Other companies are also reportedly evaluating whether to pursue an acquisition of BP.
Shell has been in discussions with its advisors regarding a possible deal. Shell may choose to focus on buybacks and smaller acquisitions.
When asked about the report, a Shell spokesperson said, "As we have said many times before, we are sharply focused on capturing the value in Shell through continuing to focus on performance, discipline and simplification."
