Total industry supply growth has remained surprisingly resilient, up 12% from third-quarter FY18 to third-quarter FY24 for a CAGR of ~2%, opined the analyst.
So much attention is placed on future AI driven opportunities, but the reality is 40% of the industry sales are from the top 500 chains with a very large addressable market of another 60% are considered to be independents, the analyst noted.
Tariffs are less of an issue for this sector than other industries but related inflation could impact several daily consumer staple commodities including avocados, seasonal produce/fruit and coffee, said the analyst.

"Seed oil is one of the components of processed foods, and all the science indicates that ultra-processed foods are the principal culprit in this extraordinary explosion – the epidemic we have of chronic disease."
Kennedy has said that he doesn't want to outright ban seed oils and processed foods, instead choosing to "incentivize" companies to transition away.
"People should be able to make their own choice. If you want to eat a donut, or seed oils, you should be able to."
Kennedy said people should know what the product is and what's in the food and the potential health impacts to make an "informed choice."
During the interview, Kennedy also mentioned several other restaurants that have switched from seed oils or are in the process of switching including Sweetgreen (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SG#NYSE">SG</a>), Buffalo Wild Wings, Bloomin' Brands (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLMN#NASDAQ">BLMN</a>) owned Outback Steakhouse and Restaurant Brands International (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QSR#NYSE">QSR</a>) owned Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen.
"We want to do everything that we can to incentivize these companies to be transparent, to switch over from ultra-processed food, and to be part of this movement to make America healthier," Kennedy said.

Why It's Important: A quick look at Steak ‘n Shake's X account shows the restaurant is embracing the attention it is getting from Kennedy, conservative voices and Republican members of Congress. 
"I just had a cheeseburger and fries cooked in beef tallow today for lunch!" a <a href="https://x.com/mtgreenee/status/1899280958508974211">tweet </a>from Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) reads that was shared by the restaurant.
Steak ‘n Shake originally embraced the change and the attention it was getting by saying, "fries will be RFK'd!" in reference to Kennedy.
Social media <a href="https://x.com/SteaknShake/status/1898422332567298089">posts </a>show hats that say "Make America Healthy Again" and images of vehicles that look like Tesla vehicles, a potential reference to the EV company that is led by Donald Trump-ally Elon Musk.
Musk previously supported Kennedy's praise for the beef tallow switch by the restaurant saying "the fries taste way better" with this cooking method.
While the move to go all in on embracing Kennedy and one political side could be a move that could backfire, Steak ‘n Shake's current social media strategy and the attention it got from Kennedy's recent interview appears to be paying off.
Google trends <a href="https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?geo=US&amp;q=steak%20n%20shake&amp;hl=en">data </a>shows searches for Steak ‘n Shake at a 12-month high with an increased number of searches for "steak n shake beef tallow fries" and "steak n shake beef tallow" being done.
Future financials for the restaurant chain will show if the food cooking method switch and social media strategy paid off for Biglari Holdings shareholders.

RFK Jr Thanks Steak 'N Shake For 'RFKing The French Fries': Restaurant Goes All In On Make America Healthy Again

J.P. Morgan analyst John Ivankoe cut the price forecast for Bloomin&#8217; Brands, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLMN#NASDAQ">BLMN</a>) from $13.00 to $10.00 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/blmn/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">while retaining a Neutral rating</a>.
The analyst says that the transition of the previously owned Brazil business to a royalty-based, capital-light model, combined with reduced capital expenditure for new units and strong liquidity, positions the brand and company for long-term success. Meanwhile, the analyst says that near-term challenges remain.
Ivankoe says the company has relied too heavily on strategies such as menu price hikes, extended dayparts like 7-day lunch, third-party delivery, and annual cost-efficiency goals.
With a new management team focused on addressing price value, simplifying operations, and leveraging a strong balance sheet to support a multi-year capital improvement plan, there is still time to revitalize these brands and businesses and prevent them from fading into obscurity, adds the analyst.
The analyst assumes a significant shift in capital expenditure towards remodels, as around 50% of the units are reported to require substantial updates.
Ivanhoe expects 150 restaurants of 970 company-owned units in the U.S. to be remodeled each year at an estimated cost of $1 million with $40 million expended for routine repair and maintenance.
In the two years in FY25/FY26, the analyst expects more than $150 million of cash to be generated, or ~21% of the equity value or ~9% of enterprise value.
The analyst estimates U.S. store margins of 12.9% in FY25 and 13.0% in FY26 vs. 13.3% in FY24 and 15.3% in FY23.
Last month, the company reported a fourth-quarter&nbsp;FY24 sales decline of 9.3% year-on-year&nbsp;to $972 million, missing the consensus estimate of $1.08 billion and adjusted EPS of $0.38, beating the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/43973714/bloomin-brands-reports-93-q4-sales-decline-not-representative-of-our-potential-says-ceo" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus&nbsp;estimate of $0.36</a>.
Price Action: BLMN shares are up 5.35% at $9.26 at the last check Monday.

Bloomin&#8217; Brands Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLMN#NASDAQ">BLMN</a>) shares are <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/premarket">trading lower in premarket</a> on Wednesday.
The company reported a fourth-quarter <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/b43968847/bloomin-brands-announces-2024-q4-financial-results">FY24 sales decline of 9.3% year-on-year </a>to $972 million, missing the analyst consensus estimate of $1.08 billion.
Combined U.S. comparable restaurant sales fell 1.1% during the quarter, with a 1.8% decline in Outback Steakhouse and a 3% climb in Fleming's Prime Steakhouse &amp; Wine Bar.
Restaurant sales decreased 9.2% Y/Y to $952 million, while Franchise and other revenues declined 13.8% to $19.9 million.
U.S. segment revenue slipped 8.6% Y/Y to $952.5 million, and the International segment decreased 5.4% Y/Y to $9.9 million.
Total cost and expenses for the quarter dropped 6.5% Y/Y to $955.8 million.
Restaurant-level operating margin contracted by 350 basis points to 12.4%. The operating margin was 1.7%, and the operating income was $16.2 million.

The company held $70.1 million in cash and equivalents as of Dec. 29, 2024. The company had a total debt of $1.03 million.
Adjusted EPS of $0.38 <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">beat the consensus</a> estimate of $0.36.
On Feb. 12, 2025, the Board of Directors declared a quarterly cash dividend of $0.15 per share, payable on March 26, to stockholders of record at the close of business on March 11.
&#8220;I am also aware that our current results are not what we expect and are not representative of our potential. We are making changes to address our near-term execution as well as drive sustainable sales and profit growth. Our guidance for the first quarter and full year is reflective of where we are and our go-forward short term performance,&#8221; said CEO Mike Spanos.
Outlook: Bloomin&#8217; Brands sees FY25 U.S. comparable restaurant sales of (2%) &#8211; Flat. The company sees FY25 adjusted EPS of $1.20 to $1.40 versus the estimate of $1.77.
Bloomin&#8217; sees first-quarter U.S. comparable restaurant sales of (1.5%) &#8211; (0.5%). It expects first-quarter adjusted EPS of $0.55 &#8211; $0.60, against the consensus of $0.68.

Wall Street's Most Accurate Analysts Weigh In On 3 Consumer Stocks With Over 5% Dividend Yields

BofA Securities analyst downgraded the shares of Bloomin&#8217; Brands Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLMN#NASDAQ">BLMN</a>) from Neutral to Underperform and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/BLMN/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener">lowered the price forecast from $18.00 to $13.00.</a>
Over the last decade, Bloomin&#8217;s transaction growth has averaged a decline of approximately 2% per year across its brands, with its largest brand, Outback, seeing a -1.1% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in traffic, said the analyst.
Outback US accounted for about 51% of Bloomin&#8217;s (BLMN) revenue in FY24, and following the Brazil licensing, this is expected to rise to around 53%.

While the casual dining sector generally experiences slow growth, Bloomin&#8217;s challenges have allowed competitors to gain a larger market share. The new management&#8217;s primary focus is on reversing the decline in traffic, noted the analyst.
Although BLMN&#8217;s volumes have consistently decreased, its margins have remained unexpectedly strong. Domestic same-store transaction counts across the BLMN system are roughly 10% lower than in 2019, but restaurant margins have only dropped by 70 basis points.
With flow-through margins around 40% on additional transactions, the analyst would have anticipated a margin decline closer to 260 basis points compared to 2019.
The fact that their pricing has been on par with or higher than direct competitors such as Texas Roadhouse Inc in the steak category, supports this perspective.
While turnarounds in casual dining are uncommon, they are not unattainable, as demonstrated by Chili&#8217;s. However, its parent company, Brinker International Inc made substantial investments in labor to enhance service and marketing efforts to attract customers.
To balance this, Brinker implemented significant price hikes. In contrast, the analyst notes an important difference between Chili&#8217;s and Bloomin&#8217; is that Chili&#8217;s had historically underpriced its competitors.
Bloomin&#8217;s brands, on the other hand, have maintained competitive pricing and lack the scale advantages within their segments to outspend rivals on marketing or value without compromising margins.
Although BLMN is currently priced below its historical average, the analyst anticipates that both revenue and earnings projections will continue to face pressure in the near future.
