Onshore US oil and gas assets were sold in 2018 and the remaining Petroleum assets were spun off and merged with Woodside in 2022, with BHP vesting the Woodside shares it received to BHP shareholders. It purchased copper miner Oz Minerals in fiscal 2023 and is entering the potash market through the development of its Jansen project in Canada. However, due to low nickel prices, BHP placed its nickel business on care and maintenance in 2024.

Anglo American (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAUKD#OTCQX">AAUKD</a>) is nearing the start of a formal sales process for its diamond unit, De Beers. The firm has owned the brand since 2011, but a comprehensive restructuring following a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">failed $49 billion bid</a> from BHP last year has led the firm to focus on other commodities.
According <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-06-05/de-beers-said-to-draw-interest-from-ex-ceos-as-anglo-starts-sale" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> Bloomberg, three interested bidders are for the 136-year-old diamond brand, including former De Beers CEOs Gareth Penny and Bruce Cleaver and Australian mining executive Michael O'Keeffe.
Penny, who led De Beers during the 2008 financial crisis, now chairs Ninety One (OTCPK: NINTF), an investment firm managing over $175 billion in assets. Cleaver, who stepped down as De Beers CEO in 2023, currently chairs Gemfields (OTCPK: PLLHF), a gemstone miner focused on emeralds and rubies.

Meanwhile, O'Keeffe is a long-time resource investor and the chairman of Burgundy Diamond Mines (OTCPK: BDMMF), the owner of Canada's Ekati mine, and a former head of Riversdale Mining, which he sold to Rio Tinto for $3.7 billion in 2011.
Anglo-American insiders say the company favors a sale over a demerger or an initial public offering, although all options remain on the table, depending on market conditions.
CEO Duncan Wanblad has stated that the group will be patient in avoiding destroying value. Over the past two years, the diamond sector's volatility has pushed Anglo to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/guidance/25/02/43523263/debeers-slashes-production-guidance-as-anglo-american-considers-another-goodwill-impairment" rel="noreferrer noopener">write down De Beers' valuation</a> to $4.1 billion — a $4.5 billion drop in just over a year.
The sale of De Beers would finalize Wanblad's broader plan to refocus Anglo on core assets. In recent months, the company has agreed to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/11/41739206/anglo-american-offloads-1-1-billion-coal-stake-proceeds-with-restructuring" rel="noreferrer noopener">divest its coal</a> and nickel operations and completed the spin-off of its platinum business, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/05/45657243/worlds-largest-platinum-miner-debuts-into-tight-supply-soaring-prices" rel="noreferrer noopener">rebranded as </a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/05/45657243/worlds-largest-platinum-miner-debuts-into-tight-supply-soaring-prices" rel="noreferrer noopener">Valterra</a>.
But while Anglo resets, the diamond market itself is in crisis. A <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/04/38155531/prada-gucci-louis-vuitton-brace-for-sales-slump-as-chinas-economic-turbulence-hits-luxury-market" rel="noreferrer noopener">collapse in Chinese luxury demand</a>, growing consumer preference for lab-grown stones, and broader questions over the cultural relevance of natural diamonds have all eroded market fundamentals.
In Q1 2025, De Beers reported a 44% decline in revenue and now holds $2 billion of unsold inventory.
Sanctions on Russian rival Alrosa, layoffs at Lucapa and Koidu, and declining sales at Petra Diamonds show the poor state of the market. Even De Beers recently shut down its Lightbox lab-grown diamond brand, looking to return to its roots and find value in natural stones.

Anglo Nears De Beers Sale As Three Potential Buyers Emerge

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an appeal by Apache Stronghold to block the Resolution Copper mine project in Arizona.
The decision allows federal authorities to hand over Oak Flat, a sacred site to the San Carlos Apache tribe, to mining firms Rio Tinto (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>) and BHP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>).
The site lies within the Tonto National Forest and contains one of the world's largest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/copper" rel="noreferrer noopener">undeveloped copper deposits</a>.
The Resolution Copper project is a joint venture between Rio Tinto, which holds 55% and operates the mine, and BHP, which owns the remaining 45%.
The companies have invested over $2 billion in the project, which contains nearly 27 million tons, enough to supply up to 25% of the U.S.'s annual copper demand for decades. The mine can potentially become the largest of its kind in North America.
Copper's role in clean energy technology has made it a highly sought-after commodity. With global demand expected to outpace supply, projects like Resolution have garnered interest from industry and government.
However, industrial ambition clashes with longstanding cultural and spiritual Apache values as the mine would create a crater two miles wide and over 1,000 feet deep, destroying the worship site.
Earlier this month, U.S. District Judge Steven Logan issued a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45343504/judge-halts-arizona-land-transfer-to-rio-tinto-citing-native-appeal" rel="noreferrer noopener">temporary injunction</a> halting the land swap pending the Supreme Court's decision. Now that the court has declined to hear the appeal, the U.S. Forest Service is expected to finalize the environmental impact statement and proceed with the transfer by June 16.
Following standard practice, the court's majority did not explain the denial, but two justices dissented.
Justice Neil Gorsuch, joined in dissent by Justice Clarence Thomas, condemned the court's refusal to intervene. "Faced with the government's plan to destroy an ancient site of tribal worship, we owe the Apaches no less," Gorsuch wrote, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2025/05/27/supreme-court-oak-flat-western-apaches-copper-mine/" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> the Washington Post.
"They may live far from Washington, D.C., and their history and religious practices may be unfamiliar to many. But that should make no difference," he noted, criticizing the decision as one that could reverberate for generations.
Mila Besich, the Democrat mayor of Superior, Arizona, which lies closest to the project, called the decision a breakthrough. "We've been waiting on this ruling for a very long time," she said. "For Superior and all of Arizona, this project will be an economic boon."

BHP Group shares are trading higher after a judge blocked an Arizona land transfer to Rio Tinto.

U.S. District Judge Steven Logan has temporarily blocked the controversial transfer of federal land in Arizona to mining firms Rio Tinto (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>) and BHP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>). Logan cited the need for the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/u-s-supreme-court" rel="noreferrer noopener">U.S. Supreme Court</a> to deliberate on an appeal filed by Native American groups opposing the project.
The decision halts progress on the Resolution Copper project, a planned large-scale underground copper mine near Superior, Arizona. The project sits atop more than 40 billion pounds (18.1 million metric tons) of copper, a metal critical to electric vehicles and clean energy infrastructure. However, it also lies beneath Oak Flat, a site sacred to the San Carlos Apache people.
In an 18-page ruling, Judge Logan clarified the risk of irreparable harm to Apache religious rights if the land transfer were permitted before the Supreme Court makes its decision.
"It is abundantly clear that the balance of equities tips sharply in [Apache Stronghold's] favor," he wrote, according to Reuters. "They have established a likelihood of irreparable harm should the transfer proceed."
The project can potentially produce over 25% of anticipated domestic copper demand for several decades, but it would create a 3-kilometer-wide, 300-meter-deep crater, effectively destroying the Oak Flat site.
Logan dismissed Rio's arguments that their $2.7 billion investment and monthly maintenance costs of $11 million warranted urgency, stating these were a "voluntary choice."
The project's legal history is complex. Though Congress and then-President Barack Obama approved the land swap enabling the project in 2014, President Donald Trump moved to expedite the land transfer during his first term. President Joe Biden reversed that action, pending further court review. Yet Trump recently restarted the process, aiming for a final transfer by June 16, driving the emergency request that led to Logan's ruling.
If built, Resolution would be one of Rio Tinto's most significant future copper assets, offering decades of domestic supply at a time when the U.S. seeks to <a target="_blank" href="https://in.benzinga.com/25/02/43492445/critical-metal-demand-to-triple-by-2030-but-demographics-pose-risks" rel="noreferrer noopener">reduce reliance on mineral imports</a>. However, the project faces the same kind of local backlash that led to the halt of Rio Tinto's Jadar lithium project in Serbia.
Rio Tinto has been mitigating development risk through strategic partnerships. Today, it <a target="_blank" href="https://www.riotinto.com/en/news/releases/2025/rio-tinto-and-sumitomo-metal-mining-sign-definitive-agreement-for-winu-project-joint-venture" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> a joint venture with Japan's Sumitomo Metal Mining to develop the Winu copper and gold project in Western Australia. Under the deal, Sumitomo will pay up to $430.4 million for a 30% stake, with $195 million upfront and further payments based on milestones.

When asked previously about buying stocks earlier this year that soared days later after Trump announced a pause to tariffs, Greene<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/04/44852406/marjorie-taylor-greene-brushes-off-stock-buying-criticism-says-portfolio-manager-bought-the-dip"> brushed aside the criticism.</a>
&#8220;I think that criticism is laughable. President Trump has been talking about tariffs for decades,&#8221; Greene told reporters when asked about the trades at a recent town hall event in Georgia in a clip <a href="https://x.com/unusual_whales/status/1912456434081480777" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shared </a>by Unusual Whales. The congresswoman used the opportunity to boast about her stock performance, which ranked her as one of the top trading members of Congress in 2024.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t place my buys and sells," Greene said, citing an agreement she has with her portfolio manager, who handles all the buying and selling of stocks. &#8220;He did a great job. Guess what he did. He bought the dip. And that&#8217;s what anybody that has financial sense does."
Greene also said her portfolio manager did not have inside information, everything was public and a potential tariff pause wasn&#8217;t a secret.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has reintroduced legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading or holding individual stocks.
The bill is known as the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments Act, or PELOSI Act based on the first letter of each of the main words. The name takes aim at the congresswoman and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).  
&#8220;Members of Congress should be fighting for the people they were elected to serve — not day trading at the expense of their constituents,&#8221; Hawley&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/hawley-reintroduces-pelosi-act-to-ban-congress-from-trading-stocks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>. &#8220;Americans have seen politician after politician turn a profit using information not available to the general public.&#8221;
Hawley said the bill will help &#8220;restore Americans&#8217; trust in our nation&#8217;s legislative body.&#8221;
Hawley&#8217;s bill is being reintroduced as President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://time.com/7280114/donald-trump-2025-interview-transcript/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said&nbsp;</a>he would support such a ban.
&#8220;Well, I watched Nancy Pelosi get rich through insider information, and I would be okay with it. If they send it to me, I would do it,&#8221; Trump told TIME.
Trump said he would sign the ban if the bill passes Congress.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Goes Stock Shopping Again: Here Are 50+ Stocks The Congresswoman Bought

Vicuña Corp., the 50/50 joint venture between BHP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) and Lundin Mining (OTCPK: LUNMF), has updated the mineral resource estimate for its flagship Filo del Sol project in Chile's Atacama region, fortifying its status as the globally <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/copper" rel="noreferrer noopener">leading greenfield copper project</a>.
"Filo del Sol has been one of the most significant greenfield discoveries in the last 30 years and an amazing journey for all those that have been involved," <a target="_blank" href="https://lundinmining.com/news/lundin-mining-announces-initial-mineral-resource-a-123197/" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> Jack Lundin, Lundin's President and CEO. "The initial Mineral Resource has highlighted the potential for one of the highest-grade undeveloped open pit copper projects in the world and one of the largest gold and silver resources globally."
The updated resource estimate reveals a measured and indicated (M&amp;I) sulphide resource of 606 million tons at a copper-equivalent (CuEq) grade of 1.14%. This resource includes 4.5 million tons of copper, 9.6 million ounces of gold, and 259 million ounces of silver. Inferred resources have grown significantly, totaling 6.1 billion tons at 0.37% copper, 0.20 g/t gold, and 3.2 g/t silver. Overall, it represents a 29% increase in M&amp;I copper resources and a 650% rise in inferred copper resources compared to previous estimates.
This expansion confirms Vicuña as the largest greenfield copper discovery in recent history, with the district's total resources, across Filo del Sol and Josemaria, ranking among the top 10 global copper deposits. The newly released Josemaria estimate adds 196 million tons at 0.73% CuEq in M&amp;I categories, further bolstering the region's profile with nearly 1 million tons of copper, 2.4 million ounces of gold, and 11 million ounces of silver.
The high-grade core at both projects will provide critical feedstock in the early years of operation, offering strong economics and scalability as the company looks to recoup initial investments.
Filo del Sol's oxide cap, which sits at the surface, adds 434 million tons at 0.34% copper, making it suitable for lower-cost heap-leach processing. Moreover, high-grade oxide and sulphide zones are still open at depth and along strike, with recent drilling encountering mineralization well beyond the current resource pit shells, indicating substantial upside for future growth.
BHP and Lundin Mining established the Vicuña joint venture last year, following a<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40031488/bhp-to-unlock-south-american-copper-riches-partners-with-lundin-for-filo-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $3 billion acquisition of Filo Corp</a>. This joint venture integrates the Filo del Sol and Josemaria projects into a unified mining district, reducing capital expenditures through shared infrastructure.
A consolidated technical report, which will outline the roadmap toward development and production, is scheduled for completion in Q1 2026.

On CNBC's &#8220;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mad-money-lightning-round">Mad Money Lightning Round</a>,&#8221; Jim Cramer said he likes BHP Group Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>). &#8220;I think you got a good situation going there,&#8221; he added.
As CEO Mike Henry&#8216;s tenure approaches its expected conclusion, BHP Group reportedly prepares for a leadership transition. While no formal announcement has been made, company insiders suggested the board could initiate the succession process soon, with a potential <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44947180/the-worlds-largest-miner-quietly-prepares-for-ceo-succession">handover in early 2026</a>.
Cramer recommended not selling Arm Holdings plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ARM#NASDAQ">ARM</a>) here. &#8220;I want you to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/ARM/news">stay in it,&#8221; he added</a>.
As per recent news, Cadence agreed to acquire Arm&#8217;s Artisan Foundation IP business on April 16.
Cramer said no to Strategy Incorporated (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>), adding he likes Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>).
According to a recent SEC filing, Strategy acquired an additional 6,556 Bitcoin for approximately $555.8 million. The purchase was made between April 14 and April 20, at an average price of $84,785 per <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/25/04/44898586/strategy-adds-555-million-in-bitcoin-ups-stash-to-538200-btc">Bitcoin including fees</a>.

Jim Cramer Likes BHP Group, Recommends Not Selling This Tech Stock

The world's largest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mining" rel="noreferrer noopener">miner</a>, BHP Group (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>), is reportedly preparing for a leadership transition as CEO Mike Henry's tenure approaches its expected conclusion.
While no formal announcement has been made, company insiders suggested the board could initiate the succession process soon, with a potential handover in early 2026.
According to information the company's insiders shared <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-23/bhp-prepares-to-start-succession-process-for-mining-s-top-job" rel="noreferrer noopener">with</a> Bloomberg, three candidates are at the forefront of the succession process.

Geraldine Slattery, who currently oversees BHP's Australian operations, brings extensive experience, having previously managed the company's oil and gas division before its merger with Woodside.
Chief Financial Officer Vandita Pant, a former banker who joined BHP in 2016, has risen rapidly with her financial expertise. Then, there is Ragnar Udd, the commercial chief who has driven the success of BHP's copper business in the Americas.
Selecting either Slattery or Pant would mean that BHP would have its first female CEO in its 140-year history.
Henry assumed the top job in January 2020, taking over from Andrew Mackenzie, who had streamlined BHP's portfolio during a seven-year tenure. Thus, Henry's potential six-year term would align with his predecessor's.
As a company veteran of three decades, Henry previously led BHP's Australian minerals division and held key roles in operations, marketing, and technology.
Under his leadership, significant milestones have occurred, including the exit from petroleum through the Woodside merger, the simplification of BHP's dual-listed structure, and the approval of the massive Jansen potash project in Canada.
However, his boldest move, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">a $49 billion bid</a> for Anglo American, ultimately collapsed when the target rejected the offer as too complex. This dealt a blow to BHP's copper growth ambition, prompting upper management to seek a solution in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40031488/bhp-to-unlock-south-american-copper-riches-partners-with-lundin-for-filo-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">joint venture with </a><a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/07/40031488/bhp-to-unlock-south-american-copper-riches-partners-with-lundin-for-filo-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">Lundin</a>.
Henry's successor will inherit both opportunities and challenges. The firm is committing billions to expand in future-facing commodities like copper and potash while maintaining iron ore as its core business.
Still, mining capex is notoriously high, and with nearly $20 billion of debt on the balance sheet, the company is already near the upper limit of its debt targets.
The iron ore business, which delivered 290 million tons in 2024, faces particular headwinds. Analysts at Goldman Sachs forecast prices could slump to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/04/44651093/iron-ore-set-to-slide-further-as-trump-tariffs-china-slowdown-collide-goldman-says" rel="noreferrer noopener">$84 per ton</a> by late 2025 amid oversupply concerns and softening Chinese demand, while BMI anticipates the oversupply could continue till the end of the decade.

World's Largest Miner BHP Quietly Prepares For CEO Succession

Shares of metals stocks are trading higher as stocks rebound amid overall market volatility as investors assess this week's tariff developments.

Shares of metals stocks are trading lower, pulling back after surging Wednesday following President Trump's tariff pause announcement. The sector has been volatile amid trade war concerns.

Shares of metals companies are trading higher following President Trump's decision to implement a 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs for all countries except China.

Mining may be down, but not out. The sector has been the worst hit since the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">new U.S. tariffs</a> were announced.
JPMorgan analyst Dominic O'Kane says, "<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities">mining was best performing sector</a> exiting last 3 recessions," and he expects another sharp recovery to unfold after the slide.
With the sector already pricing in a worst-case scenario, the setup for a V-shaped bounce is taking shape.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Extreme Weakness, But What's Priced In?</h2>
Metals and mining have been the worst-performing sector since new U.S. tariffs were announced, shedding 13% just last week. That adds to an eye-watering 50% underperformance versus MSCI Europe since January 2023. But O'Kane argues the damage is largely in the price: mining stocks already discount a recession scenario, with commodity prices 15–20% below current levels—such as iron ore at $80/ton and copper at $7,500/ton.
Still, fair value estimates suggest that miners have a serious upside even if metal prices stay flat. JPMorgan sees more than 50% total shareholder return over a two-year horizon. Rio Tinto plc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>), for example, offers >65% upside, Antofagasta plc (OTCPK: ANFGF) >50% upside and BHP Group Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) >65% upside from current price levels.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Could Flip The Switch? China Stimulus In Q3</h2>
In the past three global downturns &#8211; 2009, 2016 and 2020 &#8211; miners bottomed ahead of the broader market and went on to outperform by roughly 100% in the next 12 months. This time, the catalyst could once again be China.
JPMorgan economists expect a RMB one trillion fiscal stimulus to be unveiled in the third quarter, which would align with the historical bottoming pattern of ~four months post-selloff.
In 2020, that timeline shrank to just one month as stimulus arrived fast and hard.
That said, this time is different: the expected 0.7% of GDP stimulus is far smaller than 2008's massive ~12% package, and no China property rescue is on the horizon.
Still, the setup remains favorable.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How To Play The Rebound: Stocks, ETFs</h2>
O'Kane's top stock picks are copper and gold-centric: Antofagasta and Lundin Mining Corp (OTCPK: LUNMF) lead his copper recommendations, while Rio Tinto offers a diversified bet with a high free cash flow yield.
On the gold side, Fresnillo plc (OTCPK: FSNPF), Hochschild plc (OTCPK: HCHDF) and Anglogold Ashanti PLC (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AU#NYSE">AU</a>) are rated Overweight.
Several ETFs offer targeted exposure to this thesis for US-based investors. The Global X Copper Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COPX#NYSE">COPX</a>) and the iShares MSCI Global Metals &amp; Mining Producers ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PICK#NYSE">PICK</a>) give broad access to copper and diversified miners.

JPMorgan's Mining Stock Picks For A 'V-Shaped Recovery,' Analyst Sees 50% Returns Over Two Years

Multinational miners BHP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) and Anglo American (OTCQX:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAUKF#OTCQX">AAUKF</a>) urge the Chilean government to reduce bureaucratic obstacles, preparing to invest billions into expanding the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/copper" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">country's copper output</a>. 
With demand for the metal expected to surge in the coming years, both companies warn that Chile risks losing its competitive edge if permitting delays persist.
"As a country, we must act with a sense of urgency if we want to execute growth projects." Alejandro Tapia, head of BHP's Escondida mine, said at the ongoing CRU World Copper conference in Santiago.
"Competition will be fierce, and Chile cannot lose this opportunity or its leadership position," he noted, according <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-08/bhp-gives-chile-a-13-billion-reason-to-cut-red-tape-for-mines" rel="noreferrer noopener">to</a> Bloomberg.
Chile's copper sector, which provides a quarter of the world's supply, has long struggled with slow permitting, exacerbated by increasing environmental and social scrutiny. While President Gabriel Boric has pledged to cut approval timelines by a third, a bill to streamline the process remains stalled in Congress.
BHP, which has operated in Chile for over 30 years, is preparing to invest as much as <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42084529/bhp-unveils-14-billion-capex-for-chilean-copper-operations" rel="noreferrer noopener">$14 billion</a> to revitalize its operations in the country. The company will start with a $2.3 billion plant upgrade at Escondido, the world's largest copper mine.
The Australian mining leader plans to restart its Cerro Colorado mine by 2028 for $1.3 billion, and invest another $1.3 billion in its Spence mine. Without these expansions, BHP's Chilean output could drop to 900,000 metric tons annually — far below the 1.4 million tons it aims to achieve in the next decade.
Anglo American Chile CEO Patricio Hidalgo warned that copper demand, driven by the energy transition and digitalization, could equal the output of 80 Los Bronces mines by 2040.
Los Bronces currently represents more than 2% of the global known copper resources, producing over 215,000 metric tons annually, and is one of the assets BHP targeted with a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/large-cap/24/05/39068033/time-runs-out-for-bhp-deal-49-billion-acquisition-of-anglo-american-proves-too-complex-to-solve" rel="noreferrer noopener">failed $49 billion bid</a> last year.
"When one sees this structural gap that will occur in the copper market, we need much more agility to bring copper to the market," Higaldo said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/anglo-american-urges-faster-permits-chile-close-copper-supply-gap-2025-04-08/" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> Reuters.
Even state-owned Codelco is aggressively investing to rejuvenate its aging operations. After spending $4.4 billion in 2024, Codelco targets up to $5.6 billion in capex for 2025, aiming to recover from historic production lows and capitalize on long-term copper demand.
Despite recent copper's rout, Chairman Maximo Pacheco remains confident in the long-term outlook.
"I am convinced that the long-term fundamentals are very solid, very difficult to change," he said <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44682458/coppers-rout-sees-a-massive-intraday-price-swing-fundamentals-havent-changed-expert-says" rel="noreferrer noopener">earlier this week</a>.

U.S. tariffs on copper imports could arrive within weeks. In February, President Donald Trump directed the U.S. Commerce Department to<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44414283/copper-surges-as-arbitrage-opportunity-drives-us-imports"> conduct an investigation</a>, giving this executive department a nine-month deadline.
Per a Bloomberg<a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-03-26/trump-may-implement-copper-import-tariffs-within-weeks"> report</a>, the investigation is seen as "little more than a formality.&#8221; An announcement is likely to come well ahead of the November deadline.
The proposed tariffs, which could reach as high as 25%, would shift the global copper market. The US is a major copper consumer, needing between 1.7 and 1.9 million metric tons annually. Yet, it produces less than half of that, relying on Chile, Canada, and Peru for 90% of its imports.
Rising copper costs would boost domestic producers like Freeport McMoRan (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FCX#NYSE">FCX</a>). They could also be a catalyst for resolving the standstill in Arizona. Recall how Native American opposition stalled Rio Tinto (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RIO#NYSE">RIO</a>) and BHP's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) Resolution Copper mine located in the southern part of the Tonto National Forest—a $64 billion flagship project that could supply 25% of projected future domestic copper demand.
The looming tariffs have triggered a surge in U.S. copper imports, as traders rush to front-run potential duties. According <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/commodities/us-copper-imports-soar-500000-tons-amid-tariff-threats-says-bloomberg-2025-03-24/">to</a> Mercuria, around 500,000 metric tons of copper are en route to the U.S. That far exceeds the usual monthly average of 70,000 tons, Reuters noted.
This situation has driven up prices on New York's COMEX exchange, where copper trades at a record $1,400 premium over the London Metal Exchange (LME) benchmark. Unforeseen circumstances further tightened the supply, as Glencore paused its major Chilean copper smelter after experiencing furnace issues.
Investment banks and commodity traders expect further price increases if tariffs are imposed. Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have both forecast that a 25% duty could be in place<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/guidance/25/03/44271394/goldman-sachs-sees-copper-imports-increasing-tariffs-as-fcx-positions-to-benefit"> by year-end</a>, while Trafigura has projected that copper prices could climb to $12,000 per ton from the current level of around $10,000, as reported<a href="https://www.ft.com/content/e4f4a52c-9449-4b2a-887d-540e37f7b9bc"> by</a> The Financial Times.
Trump, however, has remained vague on the timing of the tariff announcement. On March 5, he mistakenly implied that copper tariffs were already in effect, saying, "I imposed a 25% tariff on foreign aluminum, steel, lumber, and copper."
Besides this slip, he remained vague about potential tariff exceptions ahead of the April 2 announcement, touted as a "Liberation Day" for US trade policy. First, he took a strict tone against tariff exceptions, before softening the stance in a Tuesday interview for Newsmax,
"I'll probably be more lenient than reciprocal because if I was reciprocal, that would be very tough for people," he said, according<a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/26/trump-says-tariffs-coming-in-april-will-probably-be-more-lenient-than-reciprocal.html"> to</a> CNBC.

Trump's Copper Tariffs Might Come Sooner Rather Than Later, Insiders Warn

The global iron ore market could increase production over the next five years, with output surging as high as 2.92 billion tons by 2029. This trend could put additional pressure on leading <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/australia" rel="noreferrer noopener">exporters like Australia</a>, whose currency has declined by around 20% against the U.S. dollar since 2015.
Per Mining Weekly, BMI's latest <a target="_blank" href="https://www.miningweekly.com/article/iron-ore-production-to-accelerate-over-next-five-years-bmi-2025-03-11" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a> expects iron output to grow at an annual rate of 2.5% until 2029—more than double the 1.2% growth it saw over the previous five years. Expansion of existing mines and new projects, like Guinea's Simandou, which BMI highlights as a long-term milestone, should drive this growth.
However, the report also warns that geopolitical instability and resource nationalism could cause delays, and after 2029, a lower price environment could push production into stagnation.
Global iron ore exports increased by 2% in 2024, reaching approximately 1.6 billion tons. Australia maintained its position as the world's top exporter, shipping 866 million tons—an increase of 1.4% year-over-year.
Brazil followed with 390 million tons, marking a 2.6% rise, while South Africa shipped 61 million tons, up 3.4%. China, the world's largest importer, brought in a record 1.24 billion tons in 2024, a 4.9% increase driven by stable steel production and lower prices for Australian fines.
Major mining companies also saw production increases in 2024. BHP (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BHP#NYSE">BHP</a>) boosted output by 3% to 290 million tons, Fortescue Metals Group (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSUMF#OTC">FSUMF</a>) increased supply by 2% to 194 million tons, and Vale (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VALE#NYSE">VALE</a>) achieved a 2% rise to 328 million tons, its highest level since 2018.
Meanwhile, India's exports declined as domestic demand surged by 4% to 242 million tons, driven by growth in steel, pellet, and sponge iron production.
BMI has set an optimistic forecast for Brazil, expecting its ore production to rebound following a contraction around 2020. The firm forecasts a 3.1% average annual growth from 2025 to 2029, with output increasing from 463 million tons to 528.7 million tons.
This growth is expected to continue beyond 2030 as planned projects contribute to further expansion.
Still, China is expected to lag in market growth, boosting its output by 1% this year. Despite its effort to reduce reliance on ore imports, it faces a cost problem owing to lower-grade ore. India's iron ore production is projected to grow by 2% in 2024, reaching 284 million tons, but growth is expected to slow after 2025, with output forecasted to hit 306.5 million tons by 2034.
Australia, the global leader in iron ore, is set to increase output by 2.5% in 2025, with expansion projects such as Mineral Resources' Onslow Iron and Fortescue's Iron Bridge contributing to growth.
Yet, Rio Tinto has faced challenges due to resource depletion at Paraburdoo and adverse weather, with cyclones expected to impact shipments by 13 million tons in Q1 2025.
While cornerstone projects like Simandou offer a supply boost, declining prices and competitive pressures could reshape the industry – particularly if decarbonization efforts gain stronger momentum.
