ADM Cutting More Jobs This Week As Part Of Global Cost Reduction Plan; ADM Agricultural Services And Oilseeds Division Targeted By Fresh Cuts; Employees At ADM's Swiss Office Received Layoff Notices On Tuesday

U.S. retail sales edged up only slightly in February, falling well short of expectations and keeping alive concerns about consumer strength <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44355195/retail-sales-rebound-less-than-expected-in-february-online-healthcare-spending-show-strong-gains">after January's dire contraction.</a>
Yet, a closer look at the latest data continues to reveal pockets of resilience leaving investors and economists debating whether consumer demand is cooling or simply shifting. 
In data released Monday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the retail sales figure showed a 0.2% monthly growth in February, following a downwardly revised 1.2% drop in January. The headline figure missed economist estimates of 0.6%. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Far From Being An Outright Recession</h3>
&#8220;The unfavorable surprise on U.S. headline retail sales—monthly growth of 0.2% compared to the consensus forecast of 0.6%—was not reflected in the other numbers in this data release,&#8221; said Mohamed El-Erian, chief economic advisor at Allianz.
A particularly important measure, known as the retail sales &#8220;control group&#8221;—which excludes spending at auto dealers, building materials, gas stations, office supply stores, mobile home dealers, and tobacco retailers—jumped 1% in February. This fully offset January's 1% decline and handily beat estimates of a modest 0.2% gain.
This control group is closely watched because it feeds directly into GDP calculations, making it a key indicator of underlying consumer demand. 
Joseph Brusuelas, chief economist at RSM US LP, said the data remains consistent with a slowing but still solid pace of household spending. 
&#8220;On a three-month average annualized pace, the control group advanced 2.6%,&#8221; Brusuelas said. &#8220;Yes, the economy is slowing, but not in line with anything near a recession yet.&#8221;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Restaurants And Bars See Sharp Drops</h3>
Not all areas of consumer spending fared well. 
One of the most striking data points was the decline in restaurant and bar sales, which fell 1.54% in February—the largest drop since February 2023, as highlighted by Kevin Gordon, senior investment strategist at Charles Schwabb. 
&#8220;Over the last three months, restaurant sales have collapsed 8.5% at an annual rate,&#8221; Reinassance Macro Research indicated.
This pullback suggests that discretionary spending may be softening as households become more selective about where to spend their money.
&#8220;Notable weakness in restaurants and bars—the largest decline in two years—with no growth over the last three months,&#8221; Gregory Daco, chief economist at Ernst &amp; Young US, said. 
&#8220;Spending growth at restaurant chains decelerated from -1.7% in January to -7.5% in February while spending at independent restaurants turned negative, failing from +2.6% in January to -2.7% in February,&#8221; Sara Senatore, analyst at Bank of America, wrote in a note Monday.
&#8220;We believe this sequential&nbsp;deceleration is largely a combination of negative weather trends that worsened from January and the impact of calendar shifts, including one less day (2024 had a leap day) and the Valentine&#8217;s Day shift from a Wednesday in 2024 to a Friday in 2025,&#8221; she added. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction: Consumer Staples Rally, Discretionary Stocks Lag</h3>
Stocks tied to non-discretionary consumer spending saw a solid rebound Monday, as investors rotated into defensive plays. 
The Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLP#NYSE">XLP</a>) rose 0.9%, led by Brown-Forman Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BF#NYSE">BF</a>), which surged 2.8% on the back of rising U.S.-Europe trade tensions over whiskey tariffs. 
Other major gainers included Archer-Daniels-Midland Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ADM#NYSE">ADM</a>), The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EL#NYSE">EL</a>), and Constellation Brands Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/STZ#NYSE">STZ</a>), all of which climbed about 2%.

On Friday, President Donald Trump celebrated 50 days in office. &#8220;The winning never stops,&#8221; the White House touted.
But the losing can be felt in the world of investment banks and corporations that were once hungry for growth.
&#8220;Strategic M&amp;A has gotten off to an excruciatingly slow start,&#8221; according to a PitchBook analysis published today.
January saw the lowest M&amp;A volumes in a decade, and February didn't exactly bring the sunshine either. Companies are stuck in a mess of antitrust regulations, price mismatches and market turmoil, the firm added.
Wasn&#8217;t M&amp;A supposed to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/24/11/41805370/jim-cramer-hopes-m-a-to-come-back-bigly-under-trump-administration">come back &#8220;bigly&#8221;</a> under Trump? Any <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/11/41979935/golden-years-for-ma-deals-ahead-under-trump-analysts-highlight-top-10-large-cap-candidates">talk of M&amp;A dominance</a> that was expected after the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs/sector-etfs/24/11/41952823/republicans-set-to-hold-slim-house-majority-what-it-means-for-energy-financial-defense-sectors">GOP sweep in November</a>, is coming across as just that &#8211; talk.
Just look at top tech companies like Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>). They&#8217;re are sitting on their hands instead of making deals. 
Pitchbook points out that the Redmond, Washington-based company hasn't acquired anything in the last 18 months. Most of its fellow big-tech comrades aren&#8217;t sitting at the M&amp;A table, either. Instead, their would-be M&amp;A cash is going toward AI infrastructure.
And then there's the market sell-off. On Friday, Barron&#8217;s <a href="https://www.barrons.com/articles/trump-mergers-tariffs-banks-c4fdc61d">recalled</a> November when &#8220;Wall Street was full of hope.&#8221;
At the time, shares of Goldman Sachs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>), JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>) spiked. This indicated that an M&amp;A &#8220;revival&#8221; under Trump's second term was in our midst. Fast-forward to today: Goldman Sachs' chief economist <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/goldman-sachs-chief-economist-just-160521522.html">downgraded</a> the entire U.S. economy; JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon is sounding the alarm — <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/events/25/03/44290692/jamie-dimon-warns-of-economic-weakening-negative-consumer-sentiment">once again</a>; and Morgan Stanley <a href="https://www.reuters.com/markets/deals/morgan-stanley-research-sees-slowdown-ma-activity-first-half-2025-amid-2025-03-13/">expects</a> there won&#8217;t be much action until the third quarter. 
And earlier Friday, the University of Michigan's latest survey <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/03/44331170/us-consumer-confidence-plunges-as-inflation-fears-hit-highest-level-since-1993" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">showed a rapid decrease </a>in consumer confidence as economists use words like &#8220;horrific&#8221; and &#8220;scary&#8221; to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44337983/economists-react-to-march-consumer-confidence-plunge-this-is-a-horrific-report">describe the numbers</a>.
Sounds more like &#8220;the winning&#8221; never started.

Deal Dispatch: Trump M&A Boom Is A Bust, Purple Mattress Considers Sale, Celtics Auction Heats Up

Shares of consumer staples stocks are trading lower. The sector may be down amid a rotation into tech stocks on Wednesday. Investors may also be assessing February CPI data, which showed slowing food inflation.

Shares of consumer stocks are trading lower. Weak guidance from Kohl's may causing consumer spending concerns. Additional steel and aluminum tariffs may also increase input costs for some companies.

U.S. stocks were lower, with the Nasdaq Composite falling around 650 points on Monday.
Shares of Redfin Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDFN#NASDAQ">RDFN</a>) rose sharply during Monday's session after Rocket Companies announced it will acquire the company in an all-stock transaction valued at $12.50 per share.
Under the terms of the agreement, Redfin shareholders will receive 0.7926 shares of Rocket Class A common stock for each Redfin share—a 63% premium over Redfin&#8217;s 30-day volume-weighted average price. Rocket shareholders will own approximately 95% of the combined company upon completion, with Redfin shareholders holding the remaining 5%.
Redfin shares jumped 70% to $9.89 on Monday.

<li>Trevi Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRVI#NASDAQ">TRVI</a>) surged 41.8% to $6.10 after the company reported topline results from its Phase 2a RIVER trial of Haduvio for RCC, which met the primary endpoint.</li>
<li>Protagonist Therapeutics, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PTGX#NASDAQ">PTGX</a>) rose 41% to $54.08 after the company announced topline results from its Phase 2b ANTHEM-UC study of icotrokinra in ulcerative colitis. The study met its primary endpoint in all dose groups evaluated.</li>

Redfin, Mineralys Therapeutics, Trevi Therapeutics And Other Big Stocks Moving Higher On Monday

After President Donald Trump imposed an additional 10% levy on Chinese imports, China has retaliated with tariffs on major agricultural imports from the U.S. Many agricultural product manufacturers, suppliers, and related businesses are likely to be impacted by this move.
What Happened: China&#8217;s newly imposed tariffs will take effect from March 10, whereas the goods already in transit will be exempt until April 12, according to the Chinese Commerce Ministry.
These latest measures from Beijing target about $22 billion of American agriculture products that include one of its largest export worth $12 billion to China — Soybeans, <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/da80beaf-d916-4125-a9bc-040a1f15942e?ref=biztoc.com">reported</a> FT. Chicken, pork, beef, corn, seafood, and cotton are among the 740 items with newly imposed tariffs.
These Chinese tariffs on agricultural products emerged after Trump&#8217;s joint Congress address, where he said that his tariff polices focused on protecting the American farmers.
&#8220;Because those goods that come in from other countries and companies, they're really, really in a bad position in so many different ways. They're uninspected. They may be very dirty and disgusting and they come in and they pour in and they hurt our American farmers,&#8221; said Trump at the Congress address. 
Following this, Beijing also halted U.S. timber imports, citing pest infestations such as recent detections of bark beetles and longhorn beetles.

Why It Matters: While tariffs are inherently considered to be inflationary, some analysts have opined otherwise. According to Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates, "The anxiety over tariffs may be holding back some consumers, but I want to assure you that I do not expect most tariffs to be inflationary. As an example, the tariffs that have been imposed on China are expected to be suppressed by Chinese deflation as well as a weak Chinese yuan."
On Sunday, Trump acknowledged the potential of short-term turbulence and didn&#8217;t rule out recession stemming from his economic agenda. In a Fox News <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoRzZWLHa8M">interview</a>, he said, "I hate to predict things like that" and called the changes being brought about by his administration as "very big."
However, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick dismissed recession fears, saying the U.S. is in a &#8220;transition&#8221; as President Trump plans broad reciprocal tariffs. "There's going to be no recession… Global tariffs will drop," Lutnick <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/trump-administration/commerce-secretary-lutnick-americans-shouldnt-brace-recession-rcna195522">told</a> NBC's Meet the Press.
Additionally, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/07/cnbc-transcript-united-states-treasury-secretary-scott-bessent-speaks-with-cnbcs-squawk-box-today.html">warned</a> Friday that the U.S. economy is overly dependent on government spending, predicting a &#8220;detox period.&#8221;
Price Action: The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, fell in premarket on Monday.
