On Thursday, Novavax Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVAX#NASDAQ">NVAX</a>) reported first-quarter 2025 sales of $667 million, compared to&nbsp;$94 million&nbsp;a year ago, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $343.85 million</a>.
Higher product sales for the first quarter of 2025 were primarily due to&nbsp;$603 million&nbsp;of revenue recognized with the termination of two Advance Purchase Agreements (APA) and related to cash received in prior years.&nbsp;
$45 million&nbsp;of Licensing, Royalties, &amp; Other Revenue in the first quarter of 2025 was higher than the prior year due to&nbsp;$40 million&nbsp;of Sanofi revenue associated with upfront payment, milestone amortization, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/n45282885/novavax-reports-first-quarter-2025-financial-results-and-operational-highlights" rel="noreferrer noopener">and cost reimbursement</a>.

The COVID-19 vaccine maker reported an earnings per share of $2.93, a turnaround from a loss of $1.05, beating the Wall Street Estimate of 71 cents.
"I am pleased with the progress we have made in the first quarter on our corporate growth strategy," said&nbsp;John Jacobs, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novavax. "We remain focused on creating shareholder value as we advance our three priorities for the year – optimizing our partnership with Sanofi, advancing new and existing partnership opportunities and continuing the development of our early-stage organic pipeline."&nbsp;
Nuvaxovid sales reached $608 million, up from $82 million a year ago.
Cost of sales&nbsp;for the first quarter of 2025 was&nbsp;$14 million, compared to&nbsp;$59 million&nbsp;in the same period in 2024.
R&amp;D expenses&nbsp;were&nbsp;$89 million, compared to&nbsp;$93 million a year ago, primarily due to reductions in overall expenditures related to COVID-19 vaccine development.
SG&amp;A expenses&nbsp;reached $48 million, compared to&nbsp;$87 million&nbsp;a year ago, due to the completion of commercial activities and ongoing cost reduction efforts.
Cash and equivalents were $747 million as of March 31, 2025, compared to $938 million as of December 31, 2024.
Guidance: Beginning with the 2025-2026 vaccination season, Novavax transitioned lead commercial responsibility of Nuvaxovid to Sanofi for select markets.
Since Novavax relies on Sanofi SA's (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) sales forecasts for certain revenue components, these are not included in the Full-Year 2025 Revenue Framework.
For 2025, Novavax expects to achieve adjusted total revenue between&nbsp;$975 million&nbsp;and&nbsp;$1.025 billion versus the consensus of $724.16 million and the prior <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/02/44013531/novavax-reports-smaller-q4-loss-shifts-focus-from-commercializing-covid-19-vaccine-to-maximize-value" rel="noreferrer noopener">range of $300 million-$350 million</a>.
Nuvaxovid product sales for 2025 are expected to be $610 million, and adjusted supply sales of $20-$35 million.
According to a media report in early April, the regulators missed the deadline for deciding to grant full&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/04/44613147/fda-delays-full-approval-decision-on-novavaxs-covid-19-vaccine" rel="noreferrer noopener">approval to Novavax's shot</a>.
In an SEC filing, Novavax&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/secfilings/25/04/44946464/novavax-inc-general-corporate-statement-form8" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>, "We believe that our Biologics License Application (BLA) is approvable based on conversations with U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), as of our Prescription Drug User Fee Act date on&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/04/44966369/novavaxs-covid-19-vaccine-nears-fda-full-approval-stock-jumps" rel="noreferrer noopener">April 1 and through today</a>."
The company said that it received formal communication from the FDA in the form of an information request for a post-marketing commitment to generate additional clinical data.

COVID Vaccine Maker Novavax Stock Soars 16% - Here's Why

On Friday, AstraZeneca Plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AZN#NASDAQ">AZN</a>) reported topline data from Phase 3 KALOS and LOGOS trials in patients <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" rel="noreferrer noopener">with uncontrolled asthma</a>.
KALOS and LOGOS trials assessed the efficacy and safety of Breztri Aerosphere&nbsp;(budesonide/glycopyrronium/formoterol fumarate or BGF) compared with two fixed-dose, dual-combination therapies of budesonid (an ICS) and formoterol fumarate (LABA) and&nbsp;Symbicort&nbsp;pressurized metered-dose inhaler (pMDI).
KALOS and LOGOS included approximately 4,400 randomized patients.

The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2025/breztri-met-primary-endpoints-in-ph3-asthma-trials.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">trials</a> met all primary endpoints, demonstrating a statistically significant and clinically meaningful improvement in lung function compared with dual-combination inhaled corticosteroid/long-acting beta2-agonist (ICS/LABA) medicines.
No new safety or tolerability signals were identified for&nbsp;Breztri&nbsp;in KALOS or LOGOS.
Full results from the two Phase 3 trials will be shared with regulatory authorities and presented at an upcoming medical meeting.
Breztri&nbsp;is an inhaled triple-combination therapy approved for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adults in more than 80 countries worldwide, including the US, EU, China, and Japan.
In addition to the two registrational trials (KALOS and LOGOS),&nbsp;two qualifying trials, LITHOS and VATHOS, also met their primary endpoints. LITHOS and VATHOS included approximately 1,000 randomized patients.
In April, Sanofi SA&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) reported&nbsp;preliminary results from the TIDE-Asthma phase 2 study of amlitelimab and its efficacy in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/04/44822758/sanofi-asthma-drug-misses-primary-goal-plans-for-pivotal-study" rel="noreferrer noopener">heterogeneous inflammatory asthma</a>.

<li>The primary endpoint of the annualized exacerbation rate at week 48 was not met at the highest dose level, leading to nominal significance at the medium and low doses.</li>
<li>Treatment with amlitelimab led to nominally significant and clinically meaningful reductions in asthma exacerbations at the medium dose tested and a numerically greater reduction in exacerbations at the high dose at week 60.</li>

Opella today becomes an independent global leader in consumer healthcare, marking a pivotal step in Sanofi's strategy. Sanofi announces today the closing of the sale to CD&amp;R of a 50.0% controlling stake of its consumer healthcare business Opella. Sanofi retains a significant shareholding of Opella with a 48.2% stake. Bpifrance will own a 1.8% stake in Opella and will join the Board. Sanofi Closed Sale Of 50% Stake In Opella To CD&R For €10B

Sanofi SA&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) reported Thursday a first-quarter 2025 business operating income of 2.9 billion euros ($3.06 billion), up 20.1% year over year and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" rel="noreferrer noopener">18.7%&nbsp;in constant currency</a>.
The company&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.sanofi.com/en/media-room/press-releases/2025/2025-04-24-05-30-00-3067075" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> first-quarter sales of 9.89 billion euros ($10.42 billion), beating the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $9.77 billion</a>. This was driven by launches, Dupixent, and favorable Beyfortus phasing.
Sales increased 10.8% year over year and 9.7% on constant currency. U.S. sales were 4.66 billion and increased by 15.4%.
The performance was driven by pharma launches, Dupixent, and Lantus, while legacy medicines were lower. Vaccine sales were broadly stable, including lower sales of Beyfortus.

The French drugmaker reported adjusted EPS of 1.79 euros or 94 cents per ADS, missing the consensus of 95 cents, up 17% (+15.7% on constant currency).
Sales of Dupixent, Sanofi&#8217;s blockbuster eczema drug, rose 20.3% to 3.5 billion euros due to strong volume growth across all indications and regions. The first COPD launches are underway.
Pharma launches increased 43.8% to 847 million euros, led by Altuviiio (hemophilia&nbsp;drug), Nexviazyme (Pompe disease), Sarclisa (multiple myeloma), and Rezurock (chronic graft-versus-host disease).
Vaccine sales were up 11.4% to 1.3 billion euros, driven by favorable Beyfortus (RSV) phasing and geographical roll-out.
Beyfortus sales were 284 million euros, driven by additional sales in the Northern Hemisphere, particularly Germany and Japan.
Polio/Pertussis/Hib (PPH) primary and booster vaccine sales were 668 million euros and increased by 3.8%, primarily due to demand for boosters to re-vaccinate adolescents and adults.

This is a 2.99 percent decrease over earnings of $0.97 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $10.41 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $9.77 billion by 6.51 percent. This is a 8.43 percent decrease over sales of $11.36 billion the same period last year.

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/REGN#NASDAQ">REGN</a>) on Tuesday announced a significant expansion of its manufacturing capacity through a new agreement with FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies to manufacture and supply bulk drug products of Regeneron&#8217;s commercial biologic medicines at their Holly Springs, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" rel="noreferrer noopener">North Carolina, campus</a>.

In addition, the company is constructing a brand new fill/finish manufacturing facility in Rensselaer, New York. It has acquired an over 1 million-square-foot property in Saratoga Springs, New York, for production support activities and, potentially, additional manufacturing capacity.
Regeneron has added more than 7,000 jobs in the past five years, most of which are high-paying R&amp;D and manufacturing jobs based in the U.S.
Regeneron&#8217;s ongoing and planned investments in New York and North Carolina infrastructure and manufacturing are expected to total more than $7 billion.
On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a complete response letter (CRL) regarding the supplemental Biologics License Application (sBLA) for the addition of extended dosing intervals (up to every 24 weeks) for Regeneron&#8217;s Eylea (aflibercept) Injection 8 mg <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/04/g44886470/regeneron-provides-update-on-eylea-hd-aflibercept-injection-8-mg-supplemental-biologics-license-ap" rel="noreferrer noopener">across all approved indications</a>.
The CRL did not identify any issues with the safety or efficacy of Eylea HD in its approved indications and dosing regimens. The FDA did not agree with Regeneron&#8217;s proposal to add additional extended dosing intervals (greater than every 16 weeks, which is the maximum dosing interval currently indicated in the label). Regeneron is evaluating the FDA&#8217;s decision.

BofA Securities analyst says if the Trump administration plans to impose tariffs on the pharmaceutical industry, it would likely do so through a "Section 232 investigation" under the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 to determine whether importing certain goods threatens national security.
The typical timeline for a Section 232 investigation is about a year. If the same timeline applied here, tariffs on drug imports likely wouldn't take effect until late in the year—at the earliest.
It's unclear whether the Section 232 investigation into the drug industry is about to start, but based on recent comments from the administration, it seems possible. However, launching an investigation doesn't guarantee that tariffs will follow.
As the first quarter 2025 earnings season starts soon, analyst Tim Anderson says it will be worth watching whether companies discuss potential tariffs during earnings calls.

BofA expects more details on the delay in the coming weeks. The expected $125 million milestone payment from Sanofi SA (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) will likely be pushed to the second half of 2025.
Despite small and mid-cap biotech stocks being among the worst performers this year, the sector may still present a strong opportunity. Most of these companies (80%) are pre-commercial and have minimal exposure to tariffs or FDA decisions, with only 2 out of 29 under BofA coverage awaiting FDA approval.
The bigger challenges are high interest rates and limited access to capital, but these risks are already factored into valuations. While negative headlines may continue to impact sentiment and investment flows, the recent broad sell-off could be an appealing entry point.

The <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/u-s-food-and-drug-administration">U.S. Food and Drug Administration</a> (FDA) on Thursday granted orphan drug designation to Sanofi SA&#8216;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNY#NASDAQ">SNY</a>) rilzabrutinib.
The treatment is an investigational, novel, advanced, oral, reversible Bruton's tyrosine kinase (BTK) inhibitor, for two rare diseases, warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (wAIHA) and <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD)</a>.
The FDA grants orphan drug designation to investigational therapies that address rare medical diseases or conditions that affect fewer than 200,000 people in the US.
Rilzabrutinib is <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sanofi.com/en/media-room/press-releases/2025/2025-04-03-05-00-00-3054815" rel="noreferrer noopener">currently</a> under regulatory review in the US, the EU, and China for its potential use in immune thrombocytopenia (ITP).

Results from a phase 2b study on wAIHA&nbsp;presented at ASH 2024 demonstrated that treatment with rilzabrutinib showed clinically meaningful outcomes on response rate and disease markers.
In IgG4-RD patients, results from a phase 2a study showed treatment with rilzabrutinib for 52 weeks led to reduction in disease flare, other disease markers, and glucocorticoid sparing.
The safety profile of rilzabrutinib in both studies was consistent with previous studies.
Last week, the FDA approved&nbsp;Sanofi&#8217;s Qfitlia (fitusiran), the first antithrombin-lowering (AT) therapy for routine prophylaxis to prevent or reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes in adult and pediatric patients (aged 12 or older) with hemophilia A or B with or without&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44560065/fda-approves-sanofis-hemophilia-drug" rel="noreferrer noopener">factor VIII or IX inhibitors</a>.
