Leading And Lagging Sectors For November 13, 2024

In a bid to focus on evolving shale production, Exxon Mobil Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) reportedly disclosed a $1 billion major asset sale deal.
According to Reuters, the oil and gas giant plans to divest its conventional oil drilling assets located in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico.
As per the report, the assets are estimated to produce around 26,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
The company told Reuters that the asset sale to Hilcorp Energy "aligns with their strategy to concentrate investments on high-value assets within the industry-leading portfolio."
Notably, earlier in August, Exxon had disclosed the intention to sell older wells in the Permian's Central Basin that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/08/40596410/exxon-mobil-eyes-permian-assets-sale-to-fuel-shale-expansion-report" rel="noreferrer noopener">produce small but steady oil volumes</a>.
At that time, the company said in a statement responding to questions from Bloomberg News that it is "exploring market interest for select conventional assets in West Texas and South East New Mexico."
This month, Exxon reported third-quarter revenues and other income&nbsp;of&nbsp;$90.016&nbsp;billion, which missed the consensus of&nbsp;$93.938 billion while adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.92,&nbsp;beating <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/11/41683914/exxon-q3-earnings-11-3-billion-cost-savings-rising-production-dividend-hike-and-more" rel="noreferrer noopener">the consensus of&nbsp;$1.88</a>.
The company achieved a cumulative structural cost savings of $11.3 billion versus 2019, including an additional $1.6 billion of savings during the year and $0.6 billion during the quarter.

In the first three months following Trump's 2016 election, financials stocks saw significant gains. 
The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLF) rose by 17.2% between Nov. 8, 2016, and Jan. 10, 2017, outpacing all other sectors. The rally was driven by anticipation of deregulation and tax cuts, which boosted investor confidence in banks and other financial stocks.
Conversely, consumer staples and utilities — traditionally defensive sectors — were the weakest performers in that initial period, with losses of 2.39% and 2.3%, respectively.

How Did S&P 500 Stock Sectors Perform During Trump's First Term? Could This Time Be Different?

The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average surged to record levels on Wednesday after Donald Trump was elected as <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">the 47th U.S. president.</a>
In Congress, Republicans clinched a majority in the Senate, while the House race remains close. As of Wednesday morning&#8217;s tabulations, Republicans held 198 seats versus 180 for Democrats.
The S&amp;P 500 index, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), climbed 2% to 5,900 points, while the Dow soared over 3% to 43,500 points. The blue-chip index, monitored through the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), marked its biggest single-day gain since November 2022.
The financials and industrials sectors were the top performers, up 5.2% and 3%, respectively.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Economic Implications Of A Trump Presidency, Goldman Sachs Weighs In</h3>
&#8220;If Republicans secure a narrow House majority, this would likely enable a full extension of the 2017 tax cuts, set to expire in 2025, potentially with some reinstated business investment incentives,&#8221; wrote Jan Hatzius, Goldman Sachs&#8217; chief economist.
A Republican-controlled Congress may also drive increased federal spending, particularly on defense, Goldman Sachs indicated.
"We would expect Trump to impose additional tariffs averaging 20% on imports from China," Hatzius added, highlighting that this policy could provide a &#8220;one-time boost to core PCE inflation&#8221; and &#8220;a modest drag on GDP.&#8221;
Goldman Sachs projects that the incoming Trump administration would likely pursue a more relaxed approach to regulation, especially in energy, financial services, and labor. 
However, while antitrust oversight may soften somewhat, scrutiny of the tech sector is expected to persist.

The Storm: Tropical Storm Rafael, the 17th named storm of the 2024 season, formed in the Caribbean, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/weather/hurricanes/tropical-storm-rafael-forms-expected-hurricane-rcna178632">according</a> to NBC.
The storm passed by Jamaica on Tuesday. It is expected to strengthen into a hurricane on Tuesday near the Cayman Islands and pass over Western Cuba. From there, it will likely weaken into a tropical storm before making landfall near New Orleans. The path may change drastically before impacting the U.S.
The heaviest rain of up to 10 inches is expected in Jamaica.

Betting markets leaned slightly toward Donald Trump, with CFTC-regulated Kalshi placing Trump's win probability at 56% compared to Kamala Harris's 44%.
National polls show a close contest, with the latest New York Times/Siena College poll indicating both candidates tied at 48% in the popular vote.
The S&amp;P 500 climbed 1.2%, while the tech-focused Nasdaq 100 surged 1.5%, marking its strongest one-day increase in nearly a month. 
All 11 sectors of the S&amp;P 500 experienced gains, with consumer discretionary stocks outperforming. Small caps also joined the rally, with the Russell 2000 index gaining 1.1%.
Palantir Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PLTR#NASDAQ">PLTR</a>) led the S&amp;P 500, with shares soaring after the artificial intelligence company surpassed quarterly earnings estimates and provided strong guidance.
In macroeconomic news, U.S. services sector activity hit over two-year highs <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41750522/us-services-sector-gauge-rises-more-than-expected-to-over-2-year-highs-as-employm">in October, outperforming expectations</a>.
Treasury yields increased by 5 basis points, while the dollar declined for a second consecutive session.

The U.S. stock market struggled to gain momentum on Monday as investors remained cautious ahead of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/election-day">Election Day on Tuesday</a>. 
Vice President Kamala Harris holds a 1-point lead over ex-President Donald Trump, according to the New York Times national polling average; she has a 4-point lead among likely voters nationally, <a href="https://maristpoll.marist.edu/polls/u-s-presidential-contest-november-2024/">according to the latest PBS News/NPR/Marist poll</a>.
Betting markets, as tracked by the CFTC-regulated Kalshi, favor a Trump win at a 53% chance, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/politics/24/11/41702729/harris-surges-in-prediction-markets-nabs-kalshi-lead-with-just-three-days-to-go">but with diminishing odds</a> compared to previous weeks. Also, the betting odds are susceptible to wild swings from so-called "whale" bettors, including one individual on Polymarket <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/10/41463756/polymarket-to-review-user-base-in-light-of-whales-betting-millions-on-trump-election-win" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">who spent as much as</a> $43 million on a Trump victory.

&#8220;Neither candidate holds a meaningful edge in enough states to win 270 electoral votes. In the history of modern polling, there's never been a race where the final polls showed such a close contest,&#8221; said Nate Cohn, chief political analyst for the New York Times. 
The S&amp;P 500 slipped 0.2%, while the Dow dropped 0.6%, hitting its lowest intraday level since mid-September. In contrast, small-cap stocks in the Russell 2000 outperformed, rising 1%. The Nasdaq 100 also retreated, dipping below the 20,000 mark.
Treasury yields fell by nearly 10 basis points as investors scaled back positions linked to Trump&#8217;s inflationary policies, such as high tariffs and more expansionary fiscal measures. The dollar also weakened, down 0.5%.
The increasing likelihood of a Harris victory gave a boost to solar and renewable energy stocks, with the Invesco Solar ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TAN#NYSE">TAN</a>) climbing 3.6%. 
Oil and gas stocks also gained, as crude prices surged 3% after OPEC+ postponed an anticipated production hike. Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) jumped 3%, marking its largest single-day gain since late June.
Gold held steady at $2,740, while Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) fell over 1%, dropping below $68,000.

Oil prices kicked off the week with a notable rally, driven by OPEC+'s decision to postpone an anticipated production increase ahead of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/2024-election">imminent U.S. presidential elections. </a>
The oil cartel and its allies, including Russia, opted to delay plans to ramp up output by another month, citing ongoing market weakness and sluggish demand.
On Monday, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude — as closely tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) — surged as much as 3% to hit $71.50 per barrel, its highest since Oct. 25, while Brent crude rose 2.7% to reach $75 per barrel.

These gains effectively erased last week&#8217;s losses, which followed Israel's limited response to Iran — a development that experts said reduced the risk of a broader conflict in the Middle East, providing temporary relief for oil markets.
OPEC+ announced on Sunday that it would maintain its production cut of 2.2 million barrels per day (bpd) through December. 
Originally, the group had planned to increase output by 180,000 bpd in December, but it conditioned this hike on favorable price conditions. 
The next formal meeting of OPEC+ ministers is scheduled for December 1, although the group has the flexibility to convene extraordinary meetings or alter its policies at any time.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">US Sanctions Policy Could Shape Future Of Oil</h3>
The outcome of the upcoming U.S. presidential election could be crucial for the oil market, particularly with regard to sanctions policies that affect OPEC+ producers like Russia, Iran, and Venezuela. 
&#8220;After plummeting during the first Trump administration, production in Iran and Venezuela has recovered under President Joe Biden, with the focus of sanctions moving to Russia,&#8221; wrote S&amp;P Global. 
Combined, Iran and Venezuela pumped 4.15 million bpd in September, up from 3.2 million bpd in February 2022, according to Platts' OPEC+ Survey by Commodity Insights, as both countries are exempt from quotas under the OPEC+ agreement, allowing them to pump as much as they can. 
Sanctions policy is expected to remain a key factor influencing the global oil supply, particularly amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in Ukraine and the Middle East.
The Biden-Harris administration has imposed extensive sanctions on Russia, aiming to weaken its military capabilities and hinder its economic resources that support the ongoing war in Ukraine. These sanctions, coordinated with allies like the G7 and EU, target key areas, including Russia&#8217;s defense sector, critical supply chains, and financial networks.
However, Jim Burkhard, vice president of research at S&amp;P Global Commodity Insights, suggested that a second Donald Trump administration might be more inclined to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/10/41303548/kremlin-critic-warns-russia-could-grow-stronger-if-trump-wins-white-house-will-basically-be-handing">loosen sanctions on Russia</a>. 
Both parties are likely to maintain pressure on Iran given its ongoing conflict with Israel.

Donald Trump's Return To White House Could Propel These ETFs To New Highs

Crude prices are nearing full recovery from early-week losses, poised for a third consecutive daily gain on Friday amid escalating geopolitical tensions <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/middle-east">in the Middle East.</a>
A report by <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/10/31/israel-iran-planning-attack-iraq">Axios</a> on Thursday, citing two Israeli intelligence sources, indicates Iran may be preparing a major retaliatory strike from Iraq within days. Israeli intelligence reportedly anticipates an attack using numerous drones and ballistic missiles launched from Iraq.
Yet, U.S. officials told Axios that they remain uncertain whether Iran has finalized a decision to act. 
Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hussein Salami warned on Thursday that Iran's response would be beyond any scenario Israel might anticipate.
In parallel, the conflict in Gaza intensified on Friday. Israeli airstrikes in Gaza killed more than 60 Palestinians within the past day, according to local medical sources. Israeli strikes also extended into the southern suburbs of Beirut.
Diplomatic efforts led by the U.S. struggled to make headway.
Market Reaction: West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices, tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>), rose 2.4% on Friday. They reached $71 per barrel marking three days of upward momentum.
Since Wednesday, oil prices rebounded by over 5%. They nearly erased the declines seen earlier in the week caused by subdued attacks from Israel to Tehran.
U.S. energy stocks followed suit, with the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) climbing 1%. Notably, Exxon Mobil Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) and Chevron Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) rose by 0.6% and 3.9%, respectively, following quarterly earnings releases. 
While both oil giants topped earnings estimates, Exxon's revenue came in below expectations.

Oil Prices Almost Recoup Week Losses As Iran Mulls Retaliatory Attack On Israel Prior To US Elections

Total revenues and other income&nbsp;stood at&nbsp;$90.016 billion, missing the consensus of&nbsp;$93.938 billion.
Net production stood at 4,582 thousand oil-equivalent barrels per&nbsp;day, an increase of&nbsp;5%&nbsp;from the previous quarter, driven by increased volumes from Pioneer assets.

Exxon&#8217;s&nbsp;capital and exploration expenditures stood at&nbsp;$7.16 billion in the&nbsp;third quarter, bringing year-to-date 2024 expenditures to&nbsp;$20 billion, in line with the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">company&#8217;s full-year&nbsp;guidance&nbsp;of&nbsp;$28 billion.</a>

Cost Reduction: The company achieved a cumulative structural cost savings of&nbsp;$11.3&nbsp; billion versus 2019, including an additional&nbsp;$1.6 billion&nbsp;of savings during the year and&nbsp;$0.6 billion&nbsp;during the quarter.
The company plans to deliver cumulative savings totaling&nbsp;$15 billion&nbsp;through the end of 2027 versus 2019.
Dividend Boost: Exxon raised its dividend per share by 4% to $0.99 from&nbsp;$0.95 per share, payable on December 10, to shareholders of record as of November 14.
The company&#8217;s year-to-date shareholder distributions totaled $26.1 billion, comprising $12.3 billion in dividends and $13.8 billion in share repurchases.
