Goldman Sachs analyst Neil Mehta upgraded Valero Energy Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VLO#NYSE">VLO</a>) from Neutral to Buy rating <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/VLO/analyst-ratings" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">with a price forecast of $154</a>.
The analyst believes current consensus expectations better reflect concerns about oil product demand and tighter crude differentials.
The analyst estimates EPS to grow from around $7.50 this year to over $12.50 in 2027.
The bullish stance reflects share repurchases, limited refining capacity increases, and improving crude differentials from the returning OPEC+ supply.
While a hard landing for oil demand and the economy is a key risk, the analyst notes positive developments in China-U.S. trade relations as highlighted by GS Economics Research.
Also, Valero offers unique advantages such as lowest production cost, Gulf Coast exposure with a perceived crude/product advantage and ongoing capital returns supported by a near $5 billion cash balance, adds the analyst.
The analyst raised EPS estimates to $7.49 for 2025, $11.46 for 2026 and $12.67 for 2027, from the previous projections of $6.33, $9.84, and $11.30, respectively.
The analyst&#8217;s 2025 and 2026 EPS estimates are 12% and 10% above FactSet consensus, respectively.
Mehta is increasing the estimates to account for the strengthening underlying factors and now believes consensus estimates are unlikely to be revised downwards.
In April, the company reported first-quarter sales of $30.26 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $28.68 billion and adjusted EPS of 89 cents, beating the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/04/44977776/valero-posts-higher-than-expected-profit-despite-sharp-refining-margin-decline" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of </a><a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/04/44977776/valero-posts-higher-than-expected-profit-despite-sharp-refining-margin-decline">42 cents.</a>
VLO Price Action: VLO shares are up 4.42% at $136.26 at publication on Tuesday.

Shares of energy stocks are trading higher amid a rise in the price of oil after the US and China agreed to a temporary reduction in most tariffs. The commodity may be experiencing strength amid escalating conflict between Pakistan and India.

Piper Sandler analyst Ryan Todd maintains Valero Energy (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VLO#NYSE">VLO</a>) with a Overweight and lowers the price target from $144 to $140.

Late last week, Valero Energy Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VLO#NYSE">VLO</a>) reported <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/25/04/44977776/valero-posts-higher-than-expected-profit-despite-sharp-refining-margin-decline">better-than-declined quarterly profits</a>.
So far this year, the company's stock has underperformed its closest peer, Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MPC#NYSE">MPC</a>) by around 6%. It also underperformed the Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>) by about 3%, according to Goldman Sachs.
The Valero Energy Analyst: <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/586f95cd72b34c0001c9b160/neil-mehta">Analyst Neil Mehta</a> upgraded the rating from Sell to Neutral, while raising the price target from $115 to $127.
The Valero Energy Thesis: Many of the headwinds that resulted in the stock's underperformance are now reversing, Mehta said in the upgrade note.

The analyst stated three reasons for the upgrade:

<li>Following consensus revisions, expectations better reflect "the deceleration in refining profitability with VLO 2025 EPS having been negatively revised by ~50% over the last year," he said.</li>
<li>The crude environment seems to be improving and the OPEC had begun adding barrels into the market, Mehta mentioned. "We believe the incremental heavy barrels should support more favorable crude differentials and support margins at Valero," he further wrote.</li>
<li>Although the demand environment in uncertain, the supply side is faced with larger refining closures.</li>
</ul>
"We additionally highlight the company's relatively healthy balance sheet and strong cash flow generation which we believe supports the company's continued commitment to shareholder returns," Mehta said.
Price Action: Shares of Valero Energy had risen by 0.32% to $115.14 at the time of publication on Tuesday.
