February's flash S&amp;P Global PMIs released Friday morning revealed a sharp, unexpected drop in services and raised concerns about the health of the private sector<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43877634/us-stocks-fluctuate-in-preopen-volatility-doesnt-equal-financial-loss-unless-you-sell-says-expert"> in the United States.&nbsp;</a>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Services PMI Falls Sharply</h2>
Services PMI: The S&amp;P Global Flash U.S. Services PMI Business Activity Index fell to 49.7 in February 2025 from 52.9 in January, sharply below expectations of 53 points. February's data marks the first contraction in the services sector activity in over two years, according to data from Trading Economics.  
Firms reported worsening new order growth to nearly stagnant levels due to uncertainty surrounding the Trump administration's spending cuts and potential pro-inflationary policies. 
U.S. Services PMI is expected to be 52 points by the end of the first quarter, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Manufacturing PMI Edges Higher</h2>
Manufacturing PMI: The U.S. Manufacturing PMI increased to 51.6 points in February, up from 51.2 points in January and above expectations of 51.5.&nbsp;
February data shows a continuing recovery in the manufacturing sector and marks the highest reading since June 2024. Factory output grew for a second month in a row and at the fastest pace in nearly a year.&nbsp;&nbsp;
U.S. Manufacturing PMI is expected to be 51 points by the end of the current quarter, according to Trading Economics global macro models and analysts expectations.&nbsp;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Composite PMI Shows Slowest Growth Since 2023</h2>
Composite PMI: The Composite PMI Index, which combines services and manufacturing data, dropped sharply to 50.4 points in February, down from 52.7 points in January. It marks the slowest pace of private-sector expansion since September 2023, driven by February's drop in services output.&nbsp;
New order growth dropped and employment slipped while cost inflation grew and selling prices marked their slowest increase since late 2024.&nbsp;
"The upbeat mood seen among U.S. businesses at the start of the year has evaporated, replaced with a darkening picture of heightened uncertainty, stalling business activity and rising prices," said Chris Williamson, chief business economist at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence.  
Markets React: All three major U.S. indices are red Friday with the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) down 0.49% and the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), tracking the Nasdaq 100, down 0.37%.&nbsp;

The Fed&#8217;s January meeting minutes highlighted policymakers&#8217; cautious stance on rate cuts, citing uncertainty in inflation trends. Officials stressed the need for more evidence before lowering rates, considering Trump&#8217;s tariffs, immigration policies, and geopolitical risks.

Asia And Europe Markets Mixed, Gold Advances - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Inflation is back in the spotlight as broad-based price pressures hit U.S. producers in January 2025, fueling concerns that businesses will either absorb rising costs or pass them to consumers and dampening hopes for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. </a>
The Producer Price Index surged 3.5% year over year in January, according to Thursday's release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This marks an acceleration from December's 3.3% and exceeds the 3.2% forecast tracked by TradingEconomics. January's surge also represents the highest annual reading since February 2023 and the fourth consecutive increase in the headline index, highlighting persistent inflationary pressures.
On a monthly basis, PPI climbed 0.4%, decelerating from December's 0.5% and surpassing the expected 0.3%.
The hotter-than-anticipated PPI follows a similarly stronger-than-expected Consumer Price Index report on Wednesday, which showed consumer inflation climbing 3.3% year over year.
Within major PPI categories, energy recorded the highest monthly increase, up 1.7% in January. 
&#8220;Over half of the broad-based January advance can be traced to a 1.7-percent increase in prices for final demand energy,&#8221; the BLS said.
Yet, even when excluding volatile food and energy costs, the core PPI soared 3.6% annually, slightly easing from December's upwardly revised 3.7% but still above the 3.3% estimate. 
On a monthly basis, core PPI surged 0.3%, slightly easing from an upwardly revised 0.4% reading in December and matching the expected 0.3%.
On Wednesday, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43676811/producer-inflation-preview-why-is-fed-chair-powell-closely-watching-thursdays-wholesale-prices">Fed Chair Jerome Powell said </a>that an overheated PPI, combined with the already strong CPI, could push up the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, the central bank's preferred inflation measure.

Although the PPI report came in hotter than expected, investors didn&#8217;t immediately pile into the dollar or unload stocks and Treasuries, as typically seen with strong inflation data.
The U.S. Dollar Index, tracked by Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), fell slightly minutes after the PPI release.
Treasury yields remained steady, with the 10-year yield holding 9 basis points to 4.63%. Rising yields pressured risk assets, sending stocks lower.
Futures on the S&amp;P 500 index, closely tracked by SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), rose 0.2% by 8:38 a.m. ET.
In the crypto market, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) held steady at $96,100, down 1.9% for the session.

Inflation Fears Grow As Producer Prices Rise To 3.5%, Clouding Fed Interest Rate Cut Hopes

On Wednesday, U.S. markets closed mixed, with the S&amp;P 500 declining as unexpectedly high inflation data heightened concerns about delayed Fed rate cuts. Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Hits Highs On Earnings; Oil Dips On Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks - Global Markets Today While US Slept

A hotter-than-expected January inflation report triggered sharp market reactions in early trading Wednesday, as investors dialed back their expectations for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43656846/inflation-rises-more-than-expected-in-january-chills-interest-rate-cut-hopes">Federal Reserve rate cuts. </a>
Traders pushed the first anticipated Fed rate cut to December 2025, while the second cut is now priced in no earlier than September 2026, as per CME FedWatch. 
A single rate cut in 2025 is also emerging as the most likely scenario according to betting odds as tracked by the CFTC-regulated Kalshi platform.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Hot Inflation Reading Derails Fed Rate Cut Hopes</h3>
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.0% year-over-year, slightly above both the prior reading and expectations of 2.9%. This marks the fourth consecutive increase in annual inflation. 
The monthly reading was even more alarming as CPI surged 0.5%, the largest increase since August 2023, and the third straight month of accelerating price pressures. 
Among major CPI components, fuel oil saw the biggest jump, rising 6.2% month-over-month.
&#8220;The index for meats, poultry, fish, and eggs rose 1.9 percent over the month, as the index for eggs increased 15.2 percent. This was the largest increase in the eggs index since June 2015 and it accounted for about two thirds of the total monthly food at home increase,&#8221; the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. 
Yet, the rise in inflation was not solely driven by energy and food costs. 
When excluding food and energy, core CPI increased 3.3% year-over-year, up from the previous 3.2% and exceeding forecasts of 3.1%. On a monthly basis, core CPI climbed 0.4%, its highest reading since March 2024, and above consensus estimates of 0.3%.
&#8220;If the Fed were truly committed to its 2% inflation target, market participants would be discussing a potential rate hike and not just a longer pause in the cutting cycle,&#8221; commented economist Mohamed El Erian. 
Peter Schiff took a more extreme stance: &#8220;The Fed is way too loose. At a minimum, the Fed needs to do an inter-meeting 200 basis point rate hike today.&#8221;
In contrast, Robin Brooks, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, highlighted that January inflation readings have tended to be strong post-COVID, attributing the uptick to &#8220;noise and residual seasonality.&#8221;
&#8220;My best proxy for underlying inflation is &#8220;core&#8221; services and that looks well-behaved,&#8221; Brooks said. 
Before the CPI report, President Donald Trump called for lower interest rates in a Truth Social post, indicating that such a move would go &#8220;hand-in-hand&#8221; with tariffs.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Markets React: Stocks Fall, Dollar And Yields Surge</h3>
The U.S. dollar index, tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), was the major standout winner amid the higher-than-expected inflation reading, with the greenback gauge rallying 0.5%, eyeing the strongest session since early January. 
Treasury yields soared by 10 basis points on the 10-year maturity amid expectations of tighter Fed policies. The popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) tumbled by 1.5% in the premarket, potentially heading towards the worst day since late 2024. 
Higher yields sent stocks lower across the board. Contracts on the S&amp;P 500 fell 1%, while tech stocks in the Nasdaq 100 tumbled 1.1%. Small caps underperformed, with the Russell 2000 down 1.5%. 
Sector-wise, the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLK#NYSE">XLK</a>), was down by 1.5%. Shares of Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) fell over 2%. 
Gold dipped by 0.3%, while oil prices fell 1.2%.Sentiment in cryptocurrency market weakened with Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) weakening by over 1% below $95,000.

Inflation Spike Sparks Dollar Rally: Yields Jump, Bitcoin And Stocks Slide As Interest Rate Cut Doubts Grow

Price pressures surged more than expected in the first month of the year, fueled by increases in both energy goods and underlying service items, dampening investor expectations for Federal Reserve <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">interest rate cuts</a>.
The headline Consumer Price Index rose to 3% year-over-year in data released Wednesday, up 0.1 percentage points compared to December and above median economist forecasts of 2.9%, as tracked by TradingEconomics. On a monthly basis, inflation grew by 0.5%, sharply outpacing expectations of 0.3% and accelerating from December&#8217;s 0.4% gain.
This marks the highest monthly inflation rate since August 2023.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, inched up from 3.2% to 3.3% year-over-year. On a monthly basis, core inflation rose 0.4%, surprising estimates of 0.3% and outrunning December&#8217;s 0.2% increase.
Prior to the January inflation report, markets had fully priced in just one rate cut by the end of the year, while the probability of two reductions by December 2025 stands at about 42%, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
&#8220;The index for shelter rose 0.4 percent in January, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the monthly all items increase,&#8221; the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated Wednesday. 
Fuel oil rose by 6.2% on the month, recording the highest monthly increase among CPI items. 
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance that interest rates should be reduced, indicating this move would align with tariff policies.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell is set to testify before the Committee on Financial Services later on Wednesday.

U.S. stocks edged marginally lower on Tuesday after Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell reiterated that the central bank is in no hurry to cut interest rates during his testimony before the Senate Banking Committee, offering little <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/02/43628752/feds-powell-reiterates-no-hurry-to-cut-interest-rates-as-inflation-remains-somewhat-elevated">support for risk assets.</a>
Investors remained on edge ahead of Wednesday's key inflation report, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics set to release the January Consumer Price Index.
The S&amp;P 500 dipped 0.1%, the Nasdaq 100 declined 0.2%, and small-cap stocks underperformed. Bucking the trend, the Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a marginal 0.1% gain.

US Stocks Dip As Powell Stays Cautious, Intel Climbs, Tesla Sinks To 11-Week Low: What's Driving Markets Tuesday?

On Monday, February 10, U.S. markets closed higher, driven by gains in Nvidia and other AI-related stocks. Asia Markets And Europe Mixed, Gold Near All Time High - Global Markets Today While US Slept

On Friday, February 7, U.S. markets closed lower after Trump announced plans for reciprocal tariffs amid weak jobs data and declining consumer sentiment. Despite early struggles, strong earnings provided some support. Consumer sentiment hit a seven-month low, inflation expectations surged, and job growth slowed, reinforcing expectations that the Fed will delay rate cuts until June.
The University of Michigan reported a sharp rise in inflation expectations, with the one-year outlook hitting 4.3%, the highest since November 2023. February&#8217;s jobs report showed mixed results: job growth slowed, but unemployment dropped more than expected, and wages surged.
All S&amp;P 500 sectors ended in the red, led by losses in communication services, consumer discretionary, and materials stocks.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.99% and closed at 44,303.40, the S&amp;P 500 closed lower by 0.95% at 6,025.99, and the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.36% to finish at 19,523.40.

Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Advances, Gold Hits Record High On Safe-Haven Demand - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Wall Street slumped into negative territory late in the week as renewed fears over inflation and trade <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">tariffs eroded risk appetite. </a>
The first warning sign came from the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, which revealed an "unusually large" spike in inflation expectations. The one-year inflation outlook surged by a full percentage point to 4.3%, marking its highest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43564020/consumer-sentiment-sinks-economist-flags-unusually-large-rise-in-inflation-perception">level since November 2023. </a>
Investor uncertainty grew following President Donald Trump's announcement that &#8216;reciprocal tariffs&#8217; would take effect next week. Trump is expected to sign new executive orders at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
On the macro front, February&#8217;s jobs report revealed a mixed outcome, with employment growth slowing down more than expected, yet unemployment fell more than expected, and wages surged more than expected.
Market reaction was swift. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.6%, erasing its weekly gains, while the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.9% by 1:00 p.m. trading in New York. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped into negative territory for the week, putting its three-week winning streak at risk. Small-cap stocks underperformed, with the Russell 2000 sinking 1.3%. 
Stock-wise, Uber Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NASDAQ">UBER</a>) skyrocketed by 9.5%, extending its 8.6% rally from the previous session, after hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman revealed a stake of 30.3 million shares in the ride-hailing giant.
In currency and bond markets, the U.S. dollar index – tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – rallied following the tariff headlines, while Treasury yields climbed higher. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.8%, reflecting renewed pressure on long-duration bonds. 
Gold took a breather, retreating under pressure from a stronger dollar. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) erased early session gains, slipping from an intraday high of $100,000 to $97,500.

As Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, put it per a report by Business Standard, &#8220;An <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/02/43565669/january-jobs-report-not-too-hot-not-too-cold-leaves-interest-rate-cuts-unlikely-expert">unemployment rate at 4%</a> is considered very low, giving the Fed reason to keep fed funds unchanged in the near term.&#8221;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Short-Term Outlook For The Dollar</h3>
State Street Global Advisors <a href="https://www.ssga.com/us/en/intermediary/insights/currency-commentary-january-2025">expect </a>the U.S. dollar to maintain its strength into Q1 2025, driven by strong growth, rising yields, and its safe-haven appeal amid trade tensions. 
However, with long-dollar positions becoming stretched after a strong Q4 rally, a modest pullback in the next one to two months due to profit-taking is possible. 
The slow legislative process may dampen optimism about some of Trump's growth-positive policies, but unless there is a significant economic slowdown, any dip in the dollar is expected to be temporary and shallow.

Betting On The Greenback: Dollar Trajectory Remains Strong, These ETFs Could Win Big

U.S. employment growth lost steam in January, with job growth coming in well below expectations and marking a significant slowdown <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">from the previous month. </a>
Nonfarm payrolls rose by 143,000 in January 2025, marking a sharp slowdown from the upwardly revised 307,000 in December and missing economist expectations of 170,000, as tracked by TradingEconomics.
The softer-than-expected data hints at a gradual cooling in hiring momentum. The official jobs report also reveals a weaker-than-expected unemployment rate and hotter-than-expected wage growth, indicating mixed signals about the health of the U.S. labor market.
&#8220;In January, job gains occurred in health care, retail trade, and social assistance. Employment declined in the mining, quarrying, and oil and gas extraction industry,&#8221; the Bureau of Labor Statistics stated.
November&#8217;s total nonfarm payroll employment was revised higher by 49,000, increasing from 212,000 to 261,000, while December&#8217;s figure rose by 51,000, from 256,000 to 307,000.
Despite the weaker hiring pace, the unemployment rate surprisingly inched down from 4.1% to 4% in January, beating expectations of a stable reading.
Average hourly earnings, a key measure of wage inflation, spiked 0.5% month-over-month, topping expectations of 0.3% and marking the highest increase since January 2024. On an annual basis, wages increased 4.1%, up from 3.9% previously, and beating estimates of 3.8%. 
Beyond the headline numbers, Friday&#8217;s job market report also included the annual benchmark revision to the establishment survey and updated population controls in the household survey. 
The total nonfarm employment gain for the year ending March 2024 was revised down from 2,900,000 to 2,346,000.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reaction</h3>
Financial markets showed little reactions to the jobs report, with U.S. equity futures holding flat as investors reassessed the Fed's policy outlook. 
The U.S. dollar index, tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), inched up by 0.2%, driven by rising Treasury yields.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury note was up by 5 basis points to 4.49% by 9 a.m. ET Friday. Yields on both longer- and shorter-dated maturities rose in a similar fashion. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) was 0.6% lower in premarket trading.
Gold, which is tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), held steady at $2,865 per ounce, hovering at record highs. 
Sector-wise, communication services outperformed, up 0.5%, while consumer discretionary stocks lagged, down 0.6%.
On Thursday, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) closed 0.4% higher.

US Economy Adds Fewer Than Expected Jobs In January, Unemployment Rate Slows, Wage Growth Spikes (UPDATED)

On Thursday, February 6, U.S. markets closed mixed, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq gaining while the Dow slipped amid a volatile session. Private employers created 183,000 new jobs in January 2025, marking a slight acceleration from December&#8217;s upwardly revised 176,000 and beating market <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">expectations of 150,000. </a>
The ADP National Employment Report, released Wednesday by Automatic Data Processing Inc., highlighted continued resilience in the private labor market ahead of Friday's highly anticipated non-farm payrolls report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Economists expect the government report to show a slowdown in hiring, with forecasts predicting a decline from December's 256,000 to 170,000 new jobs.
Nela Richardson, ADP&#8217;s chief economist, said: &#8220;We had a strong start to 2025 but it masked a dichotomy in the labor market. Consumer-facing industries drove hiring, while job growth was weaker in business services and production.&#8221;
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Where Did Jobs Grow in January?</h3>
The latest data revealed a divergence in job creation, with gains concentrated in service-providing industries, while goods-producing sectors continued to lag.
Goods-producing industries shed 6,000 jobs in January, driven by a 13,000 payroll reduction in manufacturing. This marked the fourth consecutive month of job losses in the sector.
Service-providing industries, on the other hand, added 190,000 positions. Trade, transportation, and utilities led the way with 56,000 new jobs, while leisure and hospitality followed closely, adding 54,000 positions.
December&#8217;s private employment growth was also revised upward to 184,000, exceeding the consensus estimate of 150,000 tracked by TradingEconomics.
The ADP report signaled ongoing moderation in wage growth. Pay increases for job stayers in January edged up 4.7% year-over-year, while job changers saw salary gains of 6.8%, down from 7.1% in December.
These figures suggest that while the labor market remains strong, wage pressures are easing—a key factor for the Federal Reserve as it assesses the timing of potential interest rate cuts in 2025.
