Amazon.Com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) nearly doubled its global workforce to 1.6 million.
Walmart aims to grow sales by 4% annually without increasing its headcount, marking a contrast in the hiring dynamics of U.S. retail trade, which employed one in 10 American workers, the Financial Times <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/5be70b28-018d-42d7-af8d-ea5a4bed4d44" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported</a> on Tuesday. Walmart&#8217;s U.S. workforce has remained at 1.6 million in the last ten years.
Wall Street analysts Neil Saunders of GlobalData and Steven Shemesh of RBC Capital highlighted to the Financial Times that Walmart&#8217;s expansion without job creation reflects the prioritization of e-commerce and automation of cumbersome tasks. Artificial intelligence will offer an additional boost to these initiatives. Paul Lewellen, senior vice president of operations at Walmart, said automation upstream has allowed the company to free up five full-time associates to work in other store areas.
Walmart CEO Doug McMillon and other executives snubbed the hiring concerns, citing that technology investments will lead to new roles for workers.
Meanwhile, critics argue that Walmart&#8217;s net sales in the U.S. have risen 36% in the past five years, while average U.S. hourly wages have increased by 28% to $18.25. Walmart stock surged over 146% in the last five years and 52% in the previous 12 months.
In April, Walmart showcased labor-saving technologies at two new warehouses outside Dallas, including a cold-storage hub for foods and a fulfillment center to enable speedy deliveries for e-commerce customers.
About 600 associates work inside the 730,000 sq ft refrigerated warehouse, implying one employee for every 1,200 sq ft. A multi-tiered geometry of lifts, conveyors and sorting machines handles perishables from suppliers and stores them in racks. Algorithms-guided robots later dispatch the foods to coolers at 175 regional stores. The centers can ship over twice the volume of traditional cold warehouses while cutting costs by 20%.
Two miles away, Walmart&#8217;s DFW-5 fulfillment center stocks items for a U.S. e-commerce business that grew by 21% in the latest quarter. The 1.5 million sq ft warehouse can hold up to two million individual products and employs 650 associates. Here, work that once took 12 steps has been reduced to five, helping to cut the cost by an expected 30% at the end of 2025.
DFW-5 replaced a Fort Worth, Texas, warehouse named DFW-1, where Walmart cut over 1,000 jobs.
According to annual reports, Walmart U.S.&#8217;s dedicated e-commerce fulfillment centers declined to 29, down from 40 in 2020.
In May, Walmart cut 1,500 global tech, U.S. operations and U.S. advertising staff.

In addition, a left-handed fishing reel&#8217;s price jumped&nbsp;from $57.37 in April to&nbsp;$83.26 in May, a 45% increase. AisleGopher, a third-party website that monitors Walmart prices, confirmed these price hikes.

Last Thursday, Target also increased the price of the Baby Born doll to match Walmart&#8217;s increased price. However, Target CEO Brian Cornell stated that&nbsp;price increases would be a&nbsp;&#8220;very last resort&#8221;.
As per the report <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/walmart-price-increases-items-tariffs-target-reddit-2025-5">by</a> Insider, in reaction to the tariff-induced price hikes,&nbsp;Walmart CFO John David Rainey&nbsp;warned that prices would continue to rise&nbsp;on some items in the&nbsp;coming weeks and months. President&nbsp;Trump responded by suggesting that&nbsp;Walmart should &#8220;eat the tariffs.&#8221;

US Tariff Impact: Prices Surge At Walmart And Target, Employees Say—Some Jumps Top 38%

U.S. stock futures are rallying Wednesday evening after a Federal Court ruled that President Donald Trump overstepped his authority with the &#8220;Liberation Day&#8221; tariffs imposed at the beginning of April. 
Following the ruling, the S&amp;P 500 Futures are up 1.50%, at 5,991.25, Nasdaq Futures trading at 21,775.75, up 1.85%, followed by Dow Futures rose over 400 points to 42,635.00, soaring 1.10% on the news.

The White House has since filed an appeal against this ruling, which could jeopardize its strategies and ongoing negotiations with several trade partners.
The ruling has sparked a surge in retail stocks in after-hours trading, with Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>) up 1.54%, Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) rallying 3.51%, followed by Shopify Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SHOP#NASDAQ">SHOP</a>) and Target Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TGT#NYSE">TGT</a>) up 3.55% and 3.19%, respectively.
Japan&#8217;s benchmark Nikkei 225 index opened higher, currently trading up 1.49%, or 563.12 points, at 38,285.52 on the news, despite growing concerns of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/05/45613069/japans-40-year-bond-yield-nosedives-as-finance-ministry-considers-cutting-super-long-debt-issuance-report">rising 40-Year bond yields</a>. The rally is being led by major exporters, electronics and automotive stocks.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is up 0.51% on Wednesday, regaining the key 100 level, trading at 100.389.

BofA Securities: Ohmes notes that while Target is experiencing overall softness in comparable sales, the company continues to perform well in areas like digital channels, seasonal categories, and brand partnerships, including the recent Kate Spade launch.
The analyst writes that merchandising efforts could help strengthen Target&#8217;s appeal and value perception over time. However, the stock is now notably lagging behind peers such as Walmart Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>).
Ohmes has lowered the FY26 adjusted EPS estimate to $6.95 from $9.10. For the second quarter, the analyst projects EPS of $1.50 and a 2% decline in comps.
Ongoing margin pressures are likely, and he flags increased uncertainty due to persistent top-line weakness, pressure from tariffs, and a delayed comp recovery. Softer sales are also expected to lead to more markdowns, which would further weigh on margins. Over the long term, Ohmes believes expansion in high-margin segments like marketplace and digital advertising could help improve margin stability.
Telsey Advisory Group: Feldman observes that competitors like Walmart are gaining ground in several of Target&#8217;s key product areas, holding or increasing share in 15 of 35 categories in Q1 FY25, particularly by appealing to higher-income shoppers through broader assortments, better pricing, and greater convenience.
The analyst also expressed a cautious stance on the newly formed Enterprise Acceleration Office. As a result, he has reduced his 2025 EPS estimate to $7.71 from $8.80 and now expects comparable sales to decline 2.5%, versus a previous estimate of a 0.3% drop.
The revision in rating reflects the continued challenging macro environment, inconsistent operating execution, limited visibility on the progress of initiatives, and potential risks related to tariffs, the analyst noted.
JP Morgan: Per Horvers, Target continues to hold relevance as a retailer over the long term but emphasizes that a more supportive macroeconomic environment is needed to drive stronger goods demand, similar to the backdrop in Q4 FY24 when Target&#8217;s market share losses were at their lowest in over two years.
The current backdrop is complicated by tariffs (which could accelerate share to value players like Costco Wholesale Corporation (NASDAQ: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/cost#NASDAQ">COST</a>), Walmart Inc., and Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>)), the analyst notes.
Target has reiterated its tariff strategy, which includes negotiating with vendors, re-evaluating assortment, diversifying countries of production, adjusting ordering timing, and taking price as a last resort.
The analyst also points out that management reported 36% year-over-year growth in same-day delivery, driven by the Target Circle 360 program. The service now includes no markups for hundreds of partner retailers, which Horvers views as an effort to grow subscription revenue and better compete with offerings like Amazon Prime, Walmart+, and Instacart.
