Key Items to Watch: General Motors' earnings report comes after the automaker recently reported U.S. sales were up 7% year-over-year in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/25/07/46206447/ford-general-motors-shares-rise-as-automakers-report-q2-sales-growth">the second quarter</a>, and were up 12% year-over-year in the first half of 2025.
The company cited strong full-size pickups and SUV sales along with record crossover sales.
Another strong seller in the second quarter was electric vehicles, which more than doubled year-over-year.
"Our EVs continue to grow faster than the industry," the company said.
General Motors became the second-largest electric vehicle seller last year and momentum continued in 2025. The company reported that Chevrolet was the bestselling EV brand in the quarter with Cadillac the luxury EV market share leader. Cadillac had its best retail market share since 2014 in the second quarter.
As <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/large-cap/25/07/46475391/tesla-cybertruck-bet-not-paying-off-ford-gm-outsell-ev-giant">Benzinga recently reported</a>, General Motors saw its Hummer EV post 4,508 deliveries in the U.S. in the second quarter, beating out the Tesla Cybertruck for second place among electric pickup trucks. Hummer EV sales were up 3,479 in the first quarter.
The Silverado EV also sold well in the second quarter with 3,056 US deliveries, up from 2,383 in the first quarter.
"The investments we have made in our crossovers, SUVs, and pickups — both gas and electric — along with great execution by our employees, suppliers and dealers, have made GM the engine of growth for the U.S. industry this year," GM Senior Vice President and President of North America Duncan Aldred said.

This news comes as Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/CRWV/analyst-ratings">maintained</a> an Equal-Weight rating on the stock, while raising the price forecast from $100 to $140.

Despite weak consumer sentiment, an uptick in household debt delinquencies, and anecdotal reports of financial distress, the overarching narrative remains that <a href="https://www.tker.co/p/household-finances-consumer-spending-strength">consumers as a whole are healthy</a>, and they are spending.
This is important because personal consumption accounts for about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bea.gov/sites/default/files/2025-06/gdp1q25-3rd.pdf">70% of GDP</a>.
On Thursday, we learned monthly retail sales grew 0.6% in June to $720 billion. This metric is hovering near record highs.

This trend was confirmed last week by&nbsp;<a href="https://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/lbr/current/">America's largest banks</a>, which know exactly how much money people have, how much they're spending, and how they're paying for it.
"The consumer basically seems to be fine," JPMorgan Chase CFO Jeremy Barnum&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/large-us-banks-consumer-finances-155807642.html">told analysts</a>&nbsp;on Tuesday. "You see a little bit more stress in the lower income bands than you see in the higher income bands. But that's always true. That&#8217;s pretty much definitionally true. And nothing there is out of line with our expectations."
Barnum acknowledged concerns about debt delinquencies but argued there was little cause for alarm.
"Consumer credit is primarily about the labor market," he explained. "In a world with a 4.1% unemployment rate, it's just going to be hard, especially in our portfolio, to see a lot of weakness."
The state of consumer spending can be described as cooling, but also "still positive&#8221; and "still growing," Barnum said.
Other banks echoed that sentiment while addressing their second-quarter profits, which beat analysts' forecasts.
&#8220;Consumer health remains very strong,&#8221; Citigroup CFO Mark Mason&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/large-us-banks-consumer-finances-155807642.html">said</a>. &#8220;We do anticipate further consumer [spending] cooling in the second half as &#8230; tariff effects play through.&#8221;
JPMorgan's debit and credit card&nbsp;<a href="https://www.jpmorganchase.com/content/dam/jpmc/jpmorgan-chase-and-co/investor-relations/documents/quarterly-earnings/2025/2nd-quarter/ac5b7d95-9133-4fea-959c-2fa6d8fd8c5b.pdf">spending volume in Q2</a>&nbsp;was up 7% from last year. Citi's branded credit card spending volume&nbsp;<a href="https://www.citigroup.com/rcs/citigpa/storage/public/2025psqtr2rslt.pdf">increased by 4%</a>. Bank of America said its credit and debit card&nbsp;<a href="https://d1io3yog0oux5.cloudfront.net/_bf30f61563164a0a6be7a9dcd505bc65/bankofamerica/db/806/10214/earnings_release/The+Press+Release_2Q25.pdf">spending was up 4%</a>. Wells Fargo's purchase volume was up 4% for its debit cards and 8% for its credit cards.

"Consumers remained resilient, with healthy spending and asset quality," BofA CEO Brian Moynihan&nbsp;<a href="https://d1io3yog0oux5.cloudfront.net/_bf30f61563164a0a6be7a9dcd505bc65/bankofamerica/db/806/10214/earnings_release/The+Press+Release_2Q25.pdf">said</a>.
&#8220;Consumers and businesses remain strong as unemployment remains low and inflation remains in check, credit card spending growth softened very slightly in the second quarter, but is still up year over year,&#8221; Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf&nbsp;<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/large-us-banks-consumer-finances-155807642.html">said</a>.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The big picture &#x1f5bc;&#xFE0F;</h2>
Card spending data from early July shows that consumers continue to spend at a healthy clip.
Just because consumers have&nbsp;been&nbsp;resilient doesn't mean they'll&nbsp;remain&nbsp;resilient.
As we've been discussing for months, the economic data, while growing,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/hot-economic-charts-that-cooled">continues to cool</a>.
This doesn't mean the economy is doomed to fall into a&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/i/167100973/theres-a-risk-the-economy-goes-into-a-recession">recession</a>. Rather, it's just an acknowledgement and recognition that it has gotten&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/i/141862794/the-economy-is-now-a-little-less-coiled">harder to argue that growth is destiny</a>.
For now, we'll just have to keep watching the data —&nbsp;<a href="https://www.tker.co/p/hard-data-soft-data-tariff-disconnect">especially the hard data</a>. Because so far, the economy continues to hold up, supported by healthy consumer spending.

The State Of The American Consumer, As Told By Their Bankers

Block Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XYZ#NYSE">XYZ</a>) is gearing up for a major milestone. The fintech company is set to join <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/s-p-500-index">the S&amp;P 500 index</a> ahead of trading on Wednesday, July 23. 
Analysts expect the inclusion to trigger significant buying pressure from index funds. JPMorgan analyst Min Moon is forecasting a net demand of 54.2 million shares. That&#8217;s equivalent to 759% of Block's average daily trading volume.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Indexer Demand Breakdown</h2>
The surge in demand comes from two main forces. S&amp;P 500 index funds will need to purchase roughly 70.9 million shares of Block to accurately track the updated index. On the flip side, funds tracking the broader S&amp;P Composite index will sell about 16.7 million shares due to Block's removal from their benchmark. The net effect is a strong buying wave of approximately 54.2 million shares.
This massive demand influx is likely to create heightened trading volumes and could drive short-term price volatility as indexers rebalance their portfolios around the inclusion date.

In light of this development and ongoing positive momentum, JPMorgan has increased its price target on Block from $60 to $90. The new target reflects a five-times next-twelve-month gross profit multiple, which offers a slight premium over Block's current valuation and remains a discount to fintech peers trading at multiples of seven to nine times.
JPMorgan highlights Block's accelerating product velocity and marketing efforts as key drivers of growth. The company's addition to the S&amp;P 500 is expected to further enhance its visibility and investor appeal.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Investors Should Expect</h2>
While the index inclusion is a powerful catalyst, investors should be prepared for elevated volatility around July 23, due to heavy trading in index funds.
