Snap

Snap is a technology company best known for its marquis social media application Snapchat, a visual messaging application that has amassed hundreds of millions of users. The app was initially only used to communicate with family and friends through photographs and short videos (known as "Snaps"). Users can now enjoy augmented reality, or AR, lenses, content from famous creators and celebrities, updates about local events, and more. Although the app offers a paid subscription option with premium features, advertising sales produce most of the app's revenue. The firm also sells wearable devices called AR Spectacles, which can capture photos and videos overlayed with AR lenses, but these make up a small portion of Snap's overall sales.

TikTok faces a nationwide ban after a U.S. Federal Appeals court refused to temporarily halt the ban earlier in December. Here's a look at where users may spend more time scrolling <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/startups/24/12/42496518/tiktok-ban-signed-into-law-what-it-means-for-americas-15-billion-small-business-economy">if TikTok is banned. </a>
What To Know: Most social media users are active on more than one app. About 70% of Snapchat users are also active on TikTok, according to <a href="https://apptopia.com/blog/googl-snap-rddt-tiktok-ban-implications/">a report</a> from Apptopia. 
The average Snapchat user spends 33 minutes per day on Snapchat. And Snapchat users who also have TikTok spend 38 minutes per day on the app.

Snap, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNAP#NYSE">SNAP</a>) could stand to benefit from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42369266/meta-reddit-stocks-climb-record-highs-as-tiktoks-battle-against-us-ban-continues-after-court-ruling">a TikTok ban</a>. That&#8217;s if the app can lure some of the former TikTok users into spending more time on Snapchat. Given that 70% of Snapchat users also use TikTok, it seems likely that they might spend additional time on Snapchat in the event of a TikTok ban. 
Apptopia shows that only 54% of Alphabet, Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) YouTube users are also active on TikTok. Users may view the apps as "substitutes," or that only one video format social platform is needed. 
However, the average YouTube user spends 84 minutes per day on the platform. YouTube users who have both YouTube and TikTok spent only 74 minutes on YouTube, which allows for some upside in the event of a TikTok ban. Perhaps YouTube will gain some share of user time spent from its "substitute" video-sharing app being banned. 
The Apptopia report also highlights Reddit, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDDT#NYSE">RDDT</a>) as poised to benefit from a TikTok ban with 60% of Reddit users also using TikTok. Users of both apps spend only 19 minutes on Reddit. The average Reddit user spends 25 minutes browsing subreddits. 
The 60% of Reddit users also using TikTok represents a significant percentage who could spend more time on the app if they were to lose interest in or access to TikTok.&nbsp;
What's Next: TikTok announced on Dec. 9 that it had filed an emergency motion for an injunction to delay the ban while the U.S. Supreme Court reviews the case. 
If TikTok is not sold and the Supreme Court does not step in, it will be banned in the U.S. on Jan. 19, 2025.

Here&#8217;s a look at the Benzinga Stock Whisper Index for the week ending Dec. 13:
Snap Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNAP#NYSE">SNAP</a>): The social media and messaging company saw strong interest from Benzinga readers during the week, which is likely related to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42369266/meta-reddit-stocks-climb-record-highs-as-tiktoks-battle-against-us-ban-continues-after-court-ruling">continued fight to ban</a> TikTok in the U.S. 
Snap and TikTok social media rivals such as Facebook, Instagram and Reddit could benefit if the app is banned. TikTok lost a fight with the U.S. appeals court recently with parent company ByteDance facing a deadline of Jan. 19, 2025, to sell the U.S. arm to a non-Chinese owner or face app stores removing the platform in America. 
While this could be good news for Snap, the ban is far from over with ByteDance continuing to fight and also concerns that President-elect Donald Trump could halt the ban when he takes over the White House. Snap and other social media platforms are also being targeted <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42237670/meta-tiktok-snapchat-could-face-32m-fines-as-australia-enforces-social-media-ban-for-under-16s-while-exempting-youtube">in several countries </a>and states over age restrictions on usage of the platforms, which could push the stock down further.
Snap stock was down on the week, as shown on the Benzinga Pro chart below. The stock is down 30% year-to-date in 2024.

The company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/12/42447155/sealsq-corp-shares-are-up-by-more-than-90-what-you-need-to-know">announced partnerships </a>with leading drone manufacturers Parrot and AgEagle. 
The company plans to launch its new Quantum-Resistant Secure Chips portfolio in 2025, which could keep the stock on the radar of Benzinga readers. Testing for these chips is underway. SEALSQ also<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42466578/whats-going-on-with-sealsq-corp-today"> announced a partnership</a> with IC'ALPS to accelerate the development of secure Application Specific Integrated Circuits.
"By combining agility with innovation, we are setting a benchmark for excellence in the competitive global semiconductor industry," SEALSQ CTO Jean Pierre Enguent said.
The drone market has been hot with investors looking for the company's that could benefit from the increase in commercial and military drone applications. Shares of the company surged over 200% on the week.

Bank of America analyst Andrew Obin <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/11/42072226/vertivs-earnings-estimates-raised-by-analyst-amid-improved-margin-outlook">recently reiterated a Buy</a> rating with a price target of $150 on the stock. The analyst said the company revised its organic revenue growth forecast to 12%-14% CAGR for 2024 to 2029, up from prior guidance of 8%-11%. Other analysts have<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/VRT/analyst-ratings"> added their takes</a> on the company recently with Barclays initiating shares with an Equal-Weight rating and $142 price target and Citigroup maintaining a Buy rating and raising the price target from $141 to $155.

The stock, which previously was featured on the Stock Whisper Index<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/06/39551432/benzingas-stock-whisper-index-5-stocks-investors-secretly-monitor-but-dont-talk-about-yet"> in June</a>, saw an analyst upgrade send shares higher on the week. Bank of America upgraded shares from Neutral to Buy with a price target of $290. The analyst said strategic partnerships and pricing could help drive future growth. 
Danaher reported third-quarter financial results in October with earnings per share and revenue each beating Street forecasts. The company has beaten analyst estimates in more than 10 straight quarters for both revenue and earnings per share. Fourth-quarter earnings are estimated to be in January, which could be a future catalyst for the stock.

The company beat analyst estimates for both revenue and earnings per share. 
Marvell CEO Matt Murphy highlighted the company's forecast for the fourth quarter, which is driven by custom AI silicon programs that are in volume production. The company recently <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/contracts/24/12/42432652/marvell-debuts-game-changing-lpo-chipset-for-data-centers-details">announced the availability </a>for new chips in its interconnect portfolio, which comes as AI-driven data centers could boost the need for optimizing interconnect solutions. 
Several analysts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/earnings-beats/24/12/42321281/marvell-technology-posts-solid-q3-beat-analysts-raise-forecasts-expect-40-50-earnings-growth">raised their price targets</a> on the stock after the company's third-quarter financial results. Shares are up over 100% year-to-date in 2024.

Bytedance, TikTok Seek Emergency Injunction To Block Law That Would Force Sale Or Ban Tiktok

On Friday, TikTok has lost its fight to block a law that could result in its ban in the United States.
The ruling, delivered by a U.S. appeals court on Friday, upheld the legislation requiring the platform to sell to a non-Chinese owner or face being removed from U.S. app stores by January 19, 2025, CNN <a target="_blank" href="https://edition.cnn.com/2024/12/06/tech/tiktok-ban-law-court-decision/index.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">reports</a>.
Failure to comply could lead to significant penalties for companies hosting TikTok on their platforms.
Social media stocks Facebook and Instagram parent Meta Platforms, Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>), Reddit, Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RDDT#NYSE">RDDT</a>), and Snap Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNAP#NYSE">SNAP</a>) surged on the reports. Meta Platforms stock hit its all-time high of $629.90 on the news, and Reddit hit an all-time high of $159.83 at the time of writing.

The court rejected TikTok&#8217;s argument that the law violated constitutional protections, including the First and Fifth Amendments. The judges found no evidence that the law infringes on free speech or equal protection rights.
This ruling brings the platform closer to a potential ban unless TikTok&#8217;s parent company, ByteDance, agrees to sell the app to a new owner. TikTok is expected to appeal the decision.
President Joe Biden signed the law in April 2024 and mandates that TikTok must be divested from Chinese control to address concerns over national security.
U.S. lawmakers have expressed fears that the Chinese government could use the platform for surveillance or to spread propaganda. TikTok sued the government in May, claiming that the law targeted the platform unfairly and violated the rights of its over 170 million American users.
During the appeals process, government attorneys argued that TikTok&#8217;s algorithm, controlled by ByteDance, could influence U.S. users. In their ruling, the judges acknowledged that TikTok fosters free expression among American users but emphasized that the government&#8217;s concerns about national security outweighed these freedoms.

Meanwhile, Amazon.Com Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) boosting of relations with TikTok sparked <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/24/09/40866761/is-amazon-eyeing-tiktok-for-a-possible-acquisition" rel="noreferrer noopener">speculation of a takeover</a>. Earlier in 2024, venture capitalist Kevin O&#8217;Leary <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/05/38948567/kevin-oleary-wants-to-buy-tiktok-talks-potential-for-crypto-payments-on-the-platform" rel="noreferrer noopener">expressed his desire</a> to snap TikTok.
ByteDance&#8217;s valuation has already reached <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/42069805/bytedance-valuation-soars-to-300b-despite-threat-of-us-tiktok-ban" rel="noreferrer noopener">$300 billion backed</a> by its share buybacks.
Needham analyst Laura Martin <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/24/07/39991984/tiktok-vs-reels-vs-shorts-analyst-sizes-up-short-form-video-platforms-on-valuation-and-monetization" rel="noreferrer noopener">had valued TikTok</a> higher than Instagram&nbsp; Reels and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) YouTube Shorts based on revenue, active users, and engagement measures.

Fidelity is raising its valuation for X Holdings, the company formerly known as Twitter, after months of marking its small stake down since Elon Musk bought the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/23/04/31810229/elon-musk-bought-twitter-1-year-ago-a-look-back-at-whats-happened-since-and-what-could-be-next">social media company.</a>
What Happened: Fidelity holds a small stake in X Holdings through its Fidelity Blue Chip Growth Fund (FBGRX). Its <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/mutual-funds/24/09/41103959/elon-musk-bought-x-for-44b-now-fidelity-values-social-media-network-below-10b">monthly holdings updates</a> regularly reveal how the financial firm values the social media platform compared to the $44 billion Musk originally paid.
After marking down the value of its X Holdings stake for several months in 2024, the month of October brought good news for X fans and investors.
Fidelity increased its valuation for X Holdings by 32.37% in October, which marks the biggest one month increase since Musk's 2022 buyout, as reported by <a href="https://www.axios.com/2024/12/01/elon-musk-x-fidelity-mark-up">Axios</a>.
While the valuation increase is large, X Holdings is <a href="https://fundresearch.fidelity.com/mutual-funds/view-all/316389303">valued </a>at around $12.3 billion overall, or around 72% less than the $44 billion Musk paid.
Fidelity does not disclose what methods are used to increase or decrease the valuations of the private companies held in the mutual fund. In the past, rises in valuations of peer social media companies have contributed to the monthly increases for X Holdings by Fidelity.
Snap Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SNAP#NYSE">SNAP</a>) shares were up 12.8% in the month of October. Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) shares were down 1.8% in October. Trump Media &amp; Technology Group (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>) shares were up 105.1% in October.
The rising valuation of Snap and Trump Media may have contributed to the increased valuation. Another factor could be X Holding's stake in xAI, an artificial intelligence company founded by Musk. Fidelity invested $6 billion in xAI's Series B round and increased the valuation of that stake by 70% in October.
xAI is <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/tech/24/11/42207862/jack-dorsey-larry-ellison-among-elon-musks-twitter-backers-set-to-gain-windfall-from-xai-deal">nearing the completion </a>of a $5 billion funding round, which could double the company's valuation to $50 billion according to new reports. Investors who helped Musk take Twitter private are also set to receive stakes in xAI, according to the report.

The 2024 election win by Donald Trump has had a positive impact on the valuation of other Musk companies, including Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>). The president-elect's friendship with the billionaire and his support for initiatives aligned with Musk's interests have contributed to this impact.
Tesla stock closed at $251.44 on Election Day and shares are now up 40.5% since the election. Musk's <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/24/11/41813356/elon-musks-net-worth-soars-by-26-5-billion-in-single-day-after-tesla-stock-surges-post-trump-vic">wealth has increased</a> $113 billion year-to-date in 2024 to $343 billion according to <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/billionaires/">Bloomberg</a>, with a significant increase coming since Trump's election win.
With other Musk companies seeing increases in valuation and X seeing increased engagement during the month of the 2024 election, Fidelity&#8217;s valuation of X could rise further in November.
Fidelity initially invested $19.66 million in X through its mutual fund. Following the latest valuation rise, the stake is now valued at $5.5 million, according to the company.
Musk has recognized that he likely&nbsp;<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/m-a/22/10/29334819/elon-musk-sees-long-term-potential-in-twitter-despite-obviously-overpaying-for-it" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">overpaid for Twitter&nbsp;</a>over the years, but he also has grand plans to turn the company into his vision of an everything app that will include social media connections, video, and financial payments.
After paying $44 billion for the company, Musk may have reduced its valuation by assigning a lower price point to employee stock awards.
Months later, Twitter was valued at $20 billion when stock awards for the company's employees were announced in March 2023. While the valuation of the stock awards was less than half of the price Musk paid, the then-CEO said he was optimistic about the company.
&#8220;I see a clear, but difficult, path to a &lt;$250B valuation,&#8221; Musk said at the time.
For Fidelity, the loss on the X investment may be minor, with the Fidelity Blue Chip Growth Fund mutual fund having a small stake in the company. The fund invests in private and public companies and is likely helped by the fact that the largest holdings in the fund are currently large technology companies. Here are the current top 10 holdings:

Along with its stake in privately held X Holdings, the Fidelity Blue Chip Growth Fund also owns stakes in some of the most well-known private companies like&nbsp;SpaceX, Fanatics, Stripe, Epic Games, Anthropic, Waymo&nbsp;and&nbsp;Relativity Space.
