What Happened: In a detailed X <a href="https://x.com/cryptoquant_com/status/1907377531143016915">thread</a> on Wedneday, research firm CryptoQuant pointed out that despite public companies accumulating 91,781 BTC in Q1, Bitcoin dropped 12%, from $94,400 to $82,500. 
Tether emerged as a surprise buyer, adding 8,888 BTC, while Strategy (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) made the largest move, acquiring 81,785 BTC for more than $8 billion.
Other buyers included The Blockchain Company (+605 BTC), Semler Scientific Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMLR#NASDAQ">SMLR</a>) (+1,108 BTC) and Metaplanet (+2,285 BTC) (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MTPLF#OTC">MTPLF</a>). 
On-chain analytics shows more corporate buying could be on the horizon, with Marathon Digital (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MARA#NASDAQ">MARA</a>) planning a $2 billion stock sale for BTC purchases and GameStop (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GME#NYSE">GME</a>) exploring a $1.3 billion Bitcoin strategy through a convertible note offering.
However, the price decline was driven by long-term holders selling 178,000 BTC in Q1, outweighing corporate accumulation. Additionally, $4.8 billion in Bitcoin ETF outflows added further downward pressure on price.

<li>BTC holders from 2020-2022 are still <a href="https://x.com/glassnode/status/1907001005251625160">holding</a> significant wealth, despite a 3% decline in their share since the November 2024 peak.</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Our Semler Scientific Trades</h2>
We placed three trades on Semler Scientific, two on Friday, January 10th, when we shared this idea with our Substack subscribers:&nbsp;

<li>We bought shares of SMLR at $51.37.&nbsp;</li>
<li>We opened a vertical spread on SMLR expiring on April 17th, 2025, buying the $55 strike calls and selling the $60 strike calls, for a net debit of $1.50.&nbsp;</li>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How That&#8217;s Going So Far</h2>
Semler Scientific closed at $64.68 on Friday, up nearly 26% on the week.&nbsp;

So our shares are up about 26%, and our vertical spread is in the money (if SMLR is still above $60 on April 17th, the spread we paid $1.50 for will be worth $5).
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Good News And Bad News On Last Monday&#8217;s Trade</h2>
The good news is we sold our $55 strike calls on SMLR on Monday for $2.91, earning a 288% gain.&nbsp;
The bad news is that had we waited until Friday instead, we could have sold them for about $10, which would have given us a gain of about 1,300%.&nbsp;
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An Approach We&#8217;ll Use Going Forward</h2>
The reason SMLR was on our radar was because it was one of our system&#8217;s <a href="https://portfolioarmor.substack.com/p/top-names-1162025" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener nofollow">top ten names</a> that week. Update On Our Better Way To Play Bitcoin

U.S. stocks were higher, with the Dow Jones index gaining over 300 points on Friday.
Shares of Schlumberger Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SLB#NYSE">SLB</a>) rose sharply during Friday's session following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/01/43055401/schlumberger-posts-strong-q4-results-raises-dividend-and-buybacks-championx-deal-to-strengthen-future-growth">fourth-quarter results</a>.
The company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter EPS and revenue. Additionally, the Board announced a 3.6% increase in its quarterly cash dividend.
Symbotic shares jumped 17.7% to $31.48 on Thursday.
Here are some other big stocks recording gains in today's session.

<li>Blaize Holdings, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BZAI#NASDAQ">BZAI</a>) shares jumped 25.4% to $8.15. The stock may be moving on continued strength after announcing a strategic partnership with AlwaysAI on Thursday.</li>
<li>SEALSQ Corp (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LAES#NASDAQ">LAES</a>) shares jumped 13.8% to $4.9499. SEALSQ announced common criteria EAL5+ certification for MS600X secure hardware platform.</li>
<li>Qorvo, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QRVO#NASDAQ">QRVO</a>) gained 13% to $83.18 following a WSJ report indicating activist investor Starboard Value has acquired a 7.7% stake in the company.</li>
<li>Sasol Limited (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SSL#NYSE">SSL</a>) rose 10.7% to $5.51</li>
<li>Coincheck Group N.V. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CNCK#NASDAQ">CNCK</a>) rose 9.3% to $9.77.</li>
<li>Telix Pharmaceuticals Limited (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLX#NASDAQ">TLX</a>) surged 9% to $17.60.</li>
<li>Semler Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMLR#NASDAQ">SMLR</a>) gained 8.8% to $63.38.</li>
<li>JD.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JD#NASDAQ">JD</a>) gained 8.7% to $38.52.</li>
<li>Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/INTC#NASDAQ">INTC</a>) rose 7.5% to $21.14. Barclays analyst Tom O&#8217;Malley maintained Intel with an Equal-Weight and lowered the price target from $25 to $23.</li>
<li>Bank OZK (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OZK#NASDAQ">OZK</a>) rose 6.5% to $48.29 following fourth-quarter earnings.</li>
<li>Coca-Cola Consolidated, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COKE#NASDAQ">COKE</a>) gained 5.6% to $1,411.80.</li>

In recent years, MicroStrategy, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSTR#NASDAQ">MSTR</a>) has emerged as a essentially a levered play on Bitcoin. Over the last year, for example, MicroStrategy was up 468%, while Bitcoin was up 105%.

What drove MicroStrategy&#8217;s outperformance is its Bitcoin Balance Sheet Strategy. MicroStrategy CEO Michael Saylor is arguably the world&#8217;s leading cheerleader for Bitcoin. After having turned his company into a machine for acquiring Bitcoin, he presented his strategy to Microsoft Corporation&#8217;s board recently.

<li>Leverage secondary share offerings and debt offerings to buy more Bitcoin.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Use its underlying business to generate revenue to service the debt incurred to buy more Bitcoin.&nbsp;</li>
<li>Attract Bitcoin enthusiasts as shareholders which supports the share price and facilitates secondary offerings used to buy more Bitcoin.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Semler Scientific May Have More Upside From Here</h2>
We have positions in both MicroStrategy and Semler Scientific, but Semler may have more upside than MicroStrategy from here. Its stronger fundamentals and more recent adoption of the Bitcoin Balance Sheet Strategy may mean it has more dry powder to acquire Bitcoin relative to its market cap. It already has almost as much Bitcoin as a percentage of market cap than MicroStrategy does, despite having followed this strategy for less than a year. And if it becomes harder to raise money to buy Bitcoin, having a profitable underlying business means Semler Scientific will continue to be able to buy Bitcoin.&nbsp;
As more investors find out about Semler Scientific and compare it to MicroStrategy, it may become a higher-levered play on Bitcoin than MicroStrategy.&nbsp;

A Better Way To Play Bitcoin?

Semler Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMLR#NASDAQ">SMLR</a>), a pioneer in developing and marketing technology products and services to healthcare providers to combat chronic diseases, today announced updates regarding its bitcoin (BTC) activity and holdings, capital markets activity, and BTC Yield, a key performance indicator.
BTC Update
Between December 16, 2024 and January 10, 2025, Semler Scientific acquired 237 bitcoins for $23.3 million with proceeds generated from its at-the-market (ATM) offering and operating cash flow at an average price of $98,267 per bitcoin, inclusive of fees and expenses. As of January 10, 2025, Semler Scientific held 2,321 bitcoins, which were acquired for an aggregate $191.9 million at an average purchase price of $82,687 per bitcoin, inclusive of fees and expenses.
ATM Update
As previously disclosed in Semler Scientific's registration statement on Form S-3 that became effective on August 13, 2024 (the S-3 Shelf), Semler Scientific entered into a Controlled Equity OfferingSM&nbsp;Sales Agreement with Cantor Fitzgerald &amp; Co. (Cantor), pursuant to which Semler Scientific may offer and sell from time to time its common stock in an ATM offering.
On December 16, 2024, Semler Scientific filed a second prospectus supplement to its S-3 Shelf to offer an additional $50.0 million of shares under its existing ATM offering with Cantor, increasing the total amount offered under the ATM to $150.0 million.&nbsp; As of January 10, 2025, Semler Scientific has generated approximately $121.8 million of gross proceeds from sales under the ATM offering.
BTC Yield as a Key Performance Indicator (KPI)
From October 1, 2024 to January 10, 2025, Semler Scientific's BTC Yield was 72.6%. From July 1, 2024 (the quarter after Semler Scientific adopted its bitcoin treasury strategy) to January 10, 2025, Semler Scientific's BTC Yield was 99.3%.
Semler Scientific uses BTC Yield as a KPI to help assess the performance of its strategy of acquiring bitcoin in a manner Semler Scientific believes is accretive to stockholders. Semler Scientific believes this KPI can be used to supplement an investor's understanding of Semler Scientific's decision to fund the purchase of bitcoin by issuing additional shares of its common stock.

Semler Scientific Purchased Additional 211 BTC For $21.5M Between Dec. 5 And Dec. 15; Now Holds 2,084 BTC

Santa Clara-based <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/11/42253242/microstrategys-michael-saylor-calls-bitcoin-the-manhattan-in-cyberspace-says-its-an-asset-you-could-expect-to-last-1000-years">healthcare technology company</a> Semler Scientific, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMLR#NASDAQ">SMLR</a>) has expanded its Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) holdings with the purchase of an additional 303 BTC for $29.3 million between Nov. 25 and Dec. 4.
This <a href="https://ir.semlerscientific.com/news-releases/news-release-details/semler-scientificr-announces-updated-btc-and-atm-activity-0">acquisition</a> brings the company&#8217;s total Bitcoin holdings to 1,873 BTC, valued at approximately $180.4 million at current market prices.
The average purchase price for these holdings stands at $78,553 per Bitcoin.
The latest Bitcoin purchase was funded through proceeds from Semler's at-the-market (ATM) equity offering. 
On Nov. 25, the company increased the offering to $100 million, generating $79.8 million in gross proceeds by early December.
Chairman Eric Semler emphasized the company's focus on its Bitcoin treasury strategy, highlighting a BTC Yield of 78.7% since July 2024.

This proprietary metric tracks the percentage change in Bitcoin holdings relative to Semler's assumed diluted shares outstanding, serving as an internal performance indicator.
Semler's adoption of Bitcoin as a treasury asset is part of a broader diversification strategy aimed at aligning with evolving market trends. 
The company views Bitcoin as a potential store of value and hedge against macroeconomic uncertainty. 
However, it cautioned that the BTC Yield metric should not be interpreted as a traditional financial performance measure, as it is designed primarily for internal assessment.
The announcement coincides with Bitcoin's recent rally above $100,000, underscoring the growing role of digital assets in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/12/42334029/michael-saylors-bitcoin-strategy-drives-microstrategys-490-surge-hedge-fund-cio-says-its-a">corporate treasury management</a>.
