In response to mounting pressure from retailers and economic indicators, the U.S. and China reached an agreement on May 12, to reduce tariffs for a 90-day period. Under this deal, U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods will decrease from 145% to 30%, while China&#8217;s tariffs on American imports will drop from 125% to 10%.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Tension Shakes Retailers And Rattles Wall Street</h2>
Trump&#8217;s sweeping tariff announcement on April 2, dubbed &#8220;Liberation Day,&#8221; slapped a 145% duty on Chinese goods to revive domestic manufacturing.&nbsp;
However, the move triggered an immediate backlash from the retail and financial markets. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged more than 1,600 points that day, one of the worst market drops since 2020.
Speaking privately at a JPMorgan Chase (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>) event later that week, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, &#8220;Neither side thinks the status quo is sustainable,&#8221; referring to the escalating trade war with China according to a transcript obtained by the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/66668fa26957ece530a250fa8ea19faa">Associated Press,</a> which also quoted him calling the China talks &#8220;a slog.&#8221;&nbsp;

Inside the Oval Office, the tone was even more urgent. According to sources cited by<a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/walmart-target-trump-tariff-supply-chains/"> CBS News</a>, the CEOs – Walmart's Doug McMillont, Target's Brian Cornell, and Ted Decker of Home Depot – emphasized that while prices were stable for now, that wouldn&#8217;t last.
&#8220;The big box CEOs flat out told him [Trump] the prices aren&#8217;t going up; they&#8217;re steady right now, but they will go up. And this wasn&#8217;t about food. But he was told that the shelves will be empty,&#8221; one administration official told<a href="https://www.axios.com/2025/04/23/trump-economy-tariffs-china-powell"> Axios</a>.&nbsp;
The outlet also reported that, according to another official briefed on the meeting, the executives said supply disruptions could become visible within two weeks if the tariffs remained in place.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, the broader U.S. economy was feeling the pressure. China&#8217;s factory activity contracted significantly in April, with the country&#8217;s official Purchasing Managers&#8217; Index falling to 49.0. This signaled a slowdown in global manufacturing as U.S. orders declined, according to the <a href="https://www.stats.gov.cn/english/PressRelease/202505/t20250507_1959690.html">official survey</a> by the China Federation of Logistics and Purchasing, published on May 7 .
On the home front, the U.S. economy shrank by 0.3% in the first quarter—the first contraction in three years.
Amid this uncertainty, Trump made headlines again when he said he had &#8220;no intention&#8221; of firing Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, easing concerns over central bank independence. The reassurance helped markets rebound temporarily.

Companies were also reacting to prolonged trade tensions. In 2024, Skechers (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKX#NYSE">SKX</a>)<a href="https://investors.skechers.com/press-releases/detail/665/skechers-agrees-to-be-acquired-by-3g-capital"> </a>&nbsp;reported $1,218.2 million in <a href="https://investors.skechers.com/financial-data/all-sec-filings/content/0000950170-25-015399/skx-ex99_1.htm">sales from China</a>—13.6% of its $8,969.4 million global revenue. Skechers, alongside 75 other footwear companies including Nike and Adidas America, <a href="https://fdra.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/April-29-Footwear-POTUS-Letter.pdf">signed a letter</a> dated 29 April from the Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America urging President Trump to exempt shoes from reciprocal tariffs. Skechers also withdrew its full-year outlook via an April 24 <a href="https://investors.skechers.com/press-releases/detail/663/skechers-announces-first-quarter-2025-financial-results-and">press release</a>.&nbsp;
Soon after, it <a href="https://investors.skechers.com/press-releases/detail/665/skechers-agrees-to-be-acquired-by-3g-capital">announced </a>a $63-per-share cash acquisition by 3G Capital—a 30% premium—citing global brand momentum.
In response to the escalating pressure, Trump unveiled a 90-day tariff pause on April 9 for most U.S. trade partners—excluding China. This shift helped the S&amp;P 500 post its biggest one-day gain since 2008.
Still, market analysts urge caution. Sevens Report Research President Tom Essaye told<a href="https://www.marketwatch.com/story/why-the-stock-rally-may-be-in-trouble-after-the-white-house-backtracked-on-tariffs-147a4ca0"> MarketWatch</a> on May 5 that tariff reprieve may be temporary and that higher trade barriers will continue to weigh on economic growth.

Walmart, Target, Home Depot CEOs Tell Trump Prices Will Rise — 'Shelves Will Be Empty' If Tariffs Persist

Skechers (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKX#NYSE">SKX</a>) <a href="https://investors.skechers.com/press-releases/detail/665/skechers-agrees-to-be-acquired-by-3g-capital">announced Monday</a> that it will be acquired by global investment firm 3G Capita for $9.5 billionl.
The third-largest shoe company in the world, Skechers was founded in 1992 by father-son duo Robert and Michael Greenberg. The company is still founder-run, and the Greenbergs will retain their respective positions as CEO and president after the take-private deal closes.&nbsp;&nbsp;
3G Capital has previously acquired Burger King and Tim Hortons and is responsible for the Kraft-Heinz merger.

According to Skechers, 3G will buy out each of the company's 18 million public shares in one of two ways. Either it will pay $63 in cash for each share, or it will pay $57 per share with the addition of a single share in the new LLC that will become Skecher's parent company.
"Over the last three decades, Skechers has experienced tremendous growth," Robert Greenberg said. "Given [3G Capital's] remarkable history of facilitating the success of some of the most iconic global consumer businesses, we believe this partnership will support our talented team as they execute their expertise to meet the needs of our consumers and customers while enabling the Company's long-term growth."
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

In 2024, Skechers <a href="https://investors.skechers.com/press-releases/detail/649/skechers-announces-2024-record-annual-sales-of-8-97-billion#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSkechers%20delivered%20exceptional%20results%20in,Chief%20Financial%20Officer%20of%20Skechers.">reported</a> a record $9 billion in sales. Some 62% of those sales take place outside the U.S., in one of the 180 countries the company has a presence in, according to a recent <a href="https://d1io3yog0oux5.cloudfront.net/_e894474d4a7decf3b34cdfdb91ca3804/skx/db/433/3612/pdf/Skechers+2025+Investor+Presentation+%28Growth%29+vFinal.pdf">investor presentation</a>.&nbsp;
The deal with 3G Capital comes at a time when uncertainties about international sales and imports are increasing. Skechers, in particular, could feel the crunch of those tariffs since its&nbsp; manufacturing operations are primarily overseas in places like China and India. Tariffs on products made in China currently sit at 145% and at 26% on products made in India.
But the potential financial shift doesn't seem to have shaken 3G Capital's feelings on the deal. "We have immense admiration for the business that this team has built, and look forward to supporting the Company's next chapter," Alex Behring and Daniel Schwartz, co-managing partners of the firm, said in the announcement.&nbsp;

U.S. stock futures fell on Tuesday after snapping a nine-day winning streak on the S&amp;P 500 index. Futures of major benchmark indices were lower in premarket.
After a remarkable 20-year high winning streak, the S&amp;P 500 saw stocks decline on Monday. This reversal was triggered by two key statements from President Donald Trump: his proposal for a 100% tariff on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/entertainment/25/05/45201601/trump-wants-movies-made-in-america-again-heres-what-tariffs-on-films-could-mean-for-disney-netflix-stock">foreign-made films</a> and his announcement that he would not be discussing trade with Chinese President Xi Jinping this week. 
Investors are keeping an eye on the Federal Reserve&#8217;s decision on interest rates, which is slated to be announced on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.36% and the two-year bond was at 3.81%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 96.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its May meeting.

Cues From Last Session:
Energy, consumer discretionary, and information technology sectors led Monday&#8217;s decline on the S&amp;P 500, contributing to the index snapping a nine-session winning streak.
Bucking this trend, consumer staples stocks closed slightly higher.
The S&amp;P 500 rose by 2.9%, the Dow by 3%, and the Nasdaq by 3.4% for the week.
In company news, Skechers U.S.A. Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKX#NYSE">SKX</a>) saw its shares surge over 24% following an acquisition agreement by 3G Capital at $63 per share, while Tyson Foods Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSN#NYSE">TSN</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45198250/tyson-shares-drop-after-mixed-quarter-with-weak-sales-solid-profit">shares fell </a>around 8% after disappointing second-quarter sales.
On the economic front, the ISM services PMI exceeded expectations, rising to 51.6 in April from March&#8217;s 50.8.
The Dow Jones index declined 99 points or 0.24% to 41,218.83, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index fell 0.64% to 5,650.38. Nasdaq Composite ended 0.74% lower at 17,844.24, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, tumbled 0.82% to 2,004.26.

Insights From Analysts:
WisdomTree senior economist Jeremy Siegel highlights the positive impact of the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45213790/us-dollar-depreciation-is-cushioning-the-impact-of-tariffs-on-corporate-profits-says-expert-heres-how">U.S. dollar&#8217;s decline</a> on multinational earnings this year.
In his weekly commentary, he points out that roughly half of the S&amp;P 500&#8217;s revenue is generated internationally, a factor he believes can mitigate the adverse effects of tariffs on corporate profits.
As Siegel states, "With 40-45% of S&amp;P 500 revenues sourced abroad, that currency translation effect alone could cushion the impact of tariffs on corporate profits."
He further suggests that, "This, alongside hopes of deal-making and eventual tariff de-escalation, is underpinning the market&#8217;s recovery."
Moreover, Siegel remains optimistic about stocks, explaining that markets often overreact to recessions.
He argues, "While earnings may drop if the economy turns south, the long-horizon value of equities should not fall 20–25%, as often happens. If investors finally look beyond the valley into the mountain, the downside could be limited even in a mild recession."
As the Federal Reserve is projected to keep the interest rates steady after the Wednesday&#8217;s meeting, Cooper Howard, director, fixed income strategy at the Schwab Center for Financial Research said, &#8220;The market&#8217;s pricing in between three and four cuts prior to the year-end, but that's aggressive unless the labor market shows further signs of slowing.&#8221;

U.S. stocks settled lower on Monday, with the S&amp;P 500 snapping a nine-session winning streak.
All three major averages recorded gains for the second week, with the S&amp;P 500 adding 2.9% and the Dow gaining 3% on the week. The Nasdaq, meanwhile, closed higher by 3.4% for the week.
Shares of Skechers U.S.A., Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SKX#NYSE">SKX</a>) jumped over 24% on Monday after the company agreed to be acquired by 3G Capital for $63 per share. Tyson Foods, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSN#NYSE">TSN</a>) shares fell around 8% after the company reported worse-than-expected second-quarter sales results.
On the economic data front, the ISM services PMI rose to 51.6 in April versus a nine-month low level of 50.8 in the previous month March and topping market estimates of 50.6.
