The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) gave California the green light on Wednesday to ban the sale of new gasoline-powered light-duty vehicles by 2035.
What Happened: The agency granted a waiver to California under the Clean Air Act to implement its plan mandating that all new light-duty vehicles delivered in the state by 2035 be plug-in hybrids, battery electric, and hydrogen-powered vehicles. 
The EPA also granted a waiver for the state&#8217;s "Omnibus" low-NOx (nitrogen oxides) regulation aimed at reducing harmful emissions from heavy-duty trucks.
"California has longstanding authority to request waivers from EPA to protect its residents from dangerous air pollution coming from mobile sources like cars and trucks,"&nbsp;said EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan. "Today's actions follow through on EPA's commitment to partner with states to reduce emissions and act on the threat of climate change."
The EPA said in a statement that the opponents of the two waivers failed to show how either program is inconsistent with the Clean Air Act.

What To Know: FedEx reported disappointing first-quarter results in September with adjusted earnings nearly 25% below consensus estimates. The company cited a mix-shift that trended toward higher volumes of less profitable freight and weakness in its industrial and manufacturing customers.&nbsp;
"The soft industrial economy is clearly weighing on the [business-to-business] volumes. And it was definitely much weaker than we expected," FedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam said on the company's most recent earnings call.&nbsp;

XPeng and Volkswagen have reached a master agreement for their work together on electrical/electronic architecture (E/E Architecture). This will have them developing E/E Architecture locally-produced vehicles based on Volkswagen&rsquo;s China Main Platform (<a href="https://investorplace.com/stock-quotes/cmp-stock-quote/">CMP</a>) and Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform.



This has them setting up Project House in Guangzhou and Hefei which will allow their engineers to work together on development. The two have also noted that this master agreement could allow for further collaborations between them.



Volkswagen&rsquo;s Ralf Brandst&auml;tter said the following about the agreement.




&ldquo;The rapid progress in the close cooperation between the Volkswagen Group and XPENG underlines the great potential of this partnership. With the joint development of a highly modern E/E Architecture, in which both partners contribute their technological expertise, we are now taking the next step together. For us at Volkswagen, this project is also the next milestone in the consistent implementation of our &lsquo;in China for China&rsquo; strategy.&rdquo;
