Dow, S&P 500 Settle At Record High Levels, Record 6th Consecutive Week Of Gains: Fear Index Moves To 'Extreme Greed' Zone

The Procter &amp; Gamble Company (NYSE: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/pg#NYSE">PG</a>) issued its fiscal 2025 first-quarter earnings report on Friday, missing sales and net income estimates but topping adjusted profit estimates.&nbsp;
<h3>Fiscal First Quarter Highlights</h3>
For the quarter ended on September 30th, P&amp;G reported&nbsp;net sales&nbsp;dropped&nbsp;1% to $21.74 billion
Putting away&nbsp;&nbsp;foreign exchange, acquisitions and divestitures,&nbsp;organic revenue grew 2% helped by higher prices. However, volume was flat, which is a better reflection of sales. While in the U.S., P&amp;G&rsquo;s volume grew in eight of its 10 categories, Greater China&nbsp;told an entirely diferent story with both its hair care and oral care segments reporting volume declines.&nbsp;
Overall, health care and baby, feminine and family care divisions all reported 1% volume declines, the beauty business experienced a volume decline of 2%, while organic sales of the skin care segment tumbled more than 20%. Supported by innovation, grooming division was a rare bright spot with volume growth of 4%.&nbsp;Fabric and home care reported a mild volume rise of 1%.&nbsp;
Getting down to the bottom line, net income attributable to the company amounted to $3.96 billion, or $1.61 per share, with adjusted earnings per share amounting to $1.93 per share.
After several price hikes over the last few years, P&amp;G has seen demand for its products drop. The last quarter was the first time in more than two years that P&amp;G experienced an increase in volume, but it was apparently short-lived.&nbsp;With the falling&nbsp;global birth rate continues to drop, P&amp;G has been trying to push consumers to buy more expensive baby care items&nbsp;but organic sales of the baby care segment fell by mid-single digits as that strategy cannot always make up for the volume decline.&nbsp;
P&amp;G remains on track to deliver its guidance.
P&amp;G reiterated its fiscal 2025&nbsp;guidance, expecting revenue growth between&nbsp;2% and 4% and net earnings per share ranging from $6.91 to $7.05. But, P&amp;G CFO&nbsp;CFO Andre Schulten noted that the Chinese market will continue to be weak for quarters to come.&nbsp;The macroeconomic environment in the U.S. that accounts for almost half of total sales remains challenging with uncertainty pushing consumers to discount-offering rivals and cheaper brands. Its rival in packaged foods manufucating, Nestle S.A. (OTC: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/nsrgy#OTC">NSRGY</a>) lowered its annual sales outlook. Nestle expects the weak demand environment to continue. After reporting dissapointing sales, Nestle announced changes corporate structure changes, aiming to streamline its operating structure. With the pandemic and the war in Ukraine, the packaged foods industry is not alone in struggling with soaring costs as prices of everything from raw materials to packaging continues to go through the roof. Even a Swiss giant like Nestle is dealing with a very painful and unprecedented reset as just like P&amp;G, it faces not only a demand slowdown&nbsp;but a significantly weakened consumer in the eyes of unprecedented uncertainty that has been lingering for quite some time, without any signs of going away.

Procter & Gamble Faces A Weakened Demand In Both The U.S. And China

Cantor Fitzgerald analyst Andres Sheppard initiates coverage on PureCycle Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PCT#NASDAQ">PCT</a>) with an Overweight<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/pct/analyst-ratings" rel="noreferrer noopener"> rating and a price forecast of $14.</a>
According to the analyst, the company enjoys a differentiated technology and first-mover advantage, along with a large total addressable market (TAM) and the ability to scale up. It also benefits from a globally patented purification polypropylene recycling technology developed in partnership with Procter &amp; Gamble Company.

Sheppard sees that the company&#8217;s first production line will reach near full capacity by 2025, with revenue reporting expected to begin in the second half of 2024.
The analyst mentions that the company is currently focused on expanding its second purification facility in Augusta, Georgia, which is expected to feature up to eight purification lines, each capable of producing approximately 130 million pounds annually.
The facility is projected to be operational by 2027, and Sheppard sees this will serve as a significant catalyst for growth.
Additionally, on September 11, the company strengthened its balance sheet by <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com//node/40813616" rel="noreferrer noopener">raising $90 million in gross proceeds.</a>

Wall Street was in positive territory in Friday midday trading, buoyed by upbeat quarterly earnings reports that kept <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">investor sentiment bullish.</a>
Netflix Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) surged 10% to fresh record highs after delivering a strong earnings beat. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 rose 0.8%, pushing its weekly performance into positive territory for the sixth consecutive week.
The S&amp;P 500 and Dow also edged higher, both on track for the sixth straight week of gains, with the Dow flirting with all-time highs.
Gold miners led industry performance as gold prices hit new record levels above $2,700 per ounce. The VanEck Gold Miners ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GDX#NYSE">GDX</a>) soared over 4%, hitting the highest level in over four years. Friday is poised to mark the fourth straight session of gains for both gold and silver, with silver jumping over 3%, heading for its best day since late September.
West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude prices tumbled more than 2%, slipping below the $70-per-barrel mark. WTI is down over 8% for the week, on pace for its worst weekly decline since January.

Procter & Gamble shares are trading lower following a Q1 revenue miss.

Procter &amp; Gamble Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PG#NYSE">PG</a>) shares are trading lower after the company reported&nbsp;first-quarter&nbsp;sales of&nbsp;$21.74 billion&nbsp;(-1% Y/Y),&nbsp;missing the analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/10/b41399117/p-g-announces-fiscal-year-2025-first-quarter-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of&nbsp;$21.91 billion</a>.
Organic sales, which exclude the impacts of foreign exchange and acquisitions and divestitures, increased&nbsp;by 2%.
Organic sales growth was driven by a 1% increase in higher pricing and a 1% rise in organic volume, excluding the effects of acquisitions and divestitures.
Sales in the Beauty segment fell&nbsp;5%, and the Baby, Feminine &amp; Family Care segment declined 2%.
Meanwhile, the Grooming segment sales sales remained flat, while Fabric &amp; Home Care grew 1% and Health Care sales increased&nbsp;2%.
Gross profit remained flat&nbsp;at $11.3 billion. The reported gross margin expanded by 10 basis points to&nbsp;52.1%, and the core gross margin was flat year-over-year.
Gains included 170 basis points from productivity savings and 30 basis points from pricing, offset by 90 basis points from higher commodity costs, 60 basis points from unfavorable mix, and 40 basis points from product reinvestments.
Operating margin expanded 30 basis points to&nbsp;26.7% while operating income for the quarter rose 1%&nbsp;to&nbsp;$5.80 billion.
Adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$1.93 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the analyst consensus of&nbsp;$1.90.</a>
P&amp;G held&nbsp;$12.16 billion&nbsp;in cash and equivalents as of September 30. Operating cash flow for the quarter was&nbsp;$4.3 billion.
The company returned around $4.4&nbsp;billion&nbsp;of value to shareholders via&nbsp;$2.4 billion&nbsp;in dividend payments and&nbsp;$1.9 billion&nbsp;of share repurchases.
&#8220;We remain committed to our integrated growth strategy of a focused product portfolio of daily use categories where performance drives brand choice, superiority — across product performance, packaging, brand communication, retail execution and consumer and customer value — productivity, constructive disruption and an agile and accountable organization,&#8221; said Board Chairman, President, and CEO Jon Moeller.
Outlook: P&amp;G reaffirmed FY25 guidance for all-in sales growth of&nbsp;2%&nbsp;–&nbsp;4%&nbsp;and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">organic sales growth of&nbsp;3%&nbsp;–&nbsp;5%</a>.
This&nbsp;outlook equates to FY25 revenue of&nbsp;$85.72 billion&nbsp;–&nbsp;$87.40 billion&nbsp;(versus an estimate of&nbsp;$86.06 billion) and adjusted EPS of&nbsp;$6.91&nbsp;–<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/earnings/24/07/40037468/why-gillette-parent-procter-gamble-shares-are-tumbling-today" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $7.05&nbsp;(vs. consensus of $6.97)</a>.
P&amp;G reaffirmed its outlook for adjusted free cash flow productivity of&nbsp;90%, payment of around&nbsp;$10 billion in dividends and repurchasing&nbsp;$6 billion to&nbsp;$7 billion of common shares in fiscal 2025.

Earnings and speeches by Federal Reserve officials could set the tempo for Friday&#8217;s session. China&#8217;s third-quarter GDP rose slightly more than estimates, allaying the fears of traders. Gold continues to make record after record, while oil continues to have a volatile ride amid geopolitical tensions.

U.S. stocks closed narrowly mixed as traders digested a batch of mixed economic data as well as a flurry of earnings. After opening higher, the major indices experienced some volatility in the morning, although holding mostly above the unchanged line. 
Stocks gave back most of their gains in late afternoon trading before finishing on a mixed note. 
The Dow Industrials closed at fresh intraday and closing highs, thanks to a positive reaction to Travelers Companies, Inc.&#8217;s (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>) earnings, while the S&amp;P 500 Index hit an intraday high before squandering all the gains and closing marginally lower.

Insights From Analysts:
After separate reports showed strong September retail sales growth, jobless claims, which fell after Hurricane Helene&#8217;s impact wore off, and a decline in industrial production amid the Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) strike, Comerica Chief Economist Bill Adams said, &#8220;The economy is in pretty good shape.&#8221; &#8220;Since consumer spending fuels two-thirds of U.S. demand, the economy can't be doing too bad as long as consumers still have their pocketbooks open,&#8221; he said.
The economist expects the Hurricanes that devastated swathes of the Southeast in late September and early October to be a big drag on releases for October.&nbsp;This will make it difficult to read the underlying trend accurately, he said.
Calling the headwinds temporary, Adams said, &#8220;With the Fed expected to continue lowering interest rates through the turn of the year, credit-sensitive sectors of the economy should perk up in coming quarters, sustaining the economic expansion into 2025.&#8221;

Crude oil futures pulled back modestly but gold futures gained ground as they scaled a fresh record. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) added over 1.50% over the past 24 hours and traded just under the $68K mark.
The 10-year U.S. Treasury note yield was little changed at 4.097%.
Asian stocks closed mostly higher, led by China and Hong Kong, which rallied on the back of the Chinese third-quarter GDP data. The Japanese market benefited from the yen&#8217;s weakness. The European Central Bank&#8217;s rate cut also buoyed sentiment.
The European markets also advanced in early trading, although the U.K. market was experiencing some weakness.

U.S. retail sales rose 0.4% month-over-month in September compared to a 0.1% increase in August and higher than market estimates of a 0.3% rise. The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index climbed to 10.3 in October compared to 1.7 in September and topping market estimates of 3.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSM#NYSE">TSM</a>) shares jumped around 9.8% on Thursday following better-than-expected third-quarter earnings and strong fourth-quarter guidance
