JPMorgan analyst Arun Jayaram anticipates a neutral market reaction to Occidental Petroleum Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/OXY/analyst-ratings">earnings</a>.
Jayaram explained in a Thursday research note that positive results, debt reduction, and cost-saving initiatives were partly offset by potential risks to full-year guidance related to U.S. operating expenses and Gulf of Anadarko (GoA) volumes.
Jayaram&#8217;s forecast comes after Occidental reported adjusted EPS of 87 cents per share, which beat the analyst consensus estimate of 77 cents and revenue of $6.84 billion, which missed the analyst <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45290926/occidental-beats-q1-profit-forecast-slashes-debt-by-23-billion-year-to-date" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of $6.89 billion</a>.
The company sees production of 1,377 – 1,417 Mboed in the second quarter and 1,390 – 1,440 Mboed&nbsp;<a href="https://www.oxy.com/siteassets/documents/investors/quarterly-earnings/oxy1q25conferencecallslides.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in&nbsp;</a>FY25.
Occidental also slashed the mid-point of 2025 capital guidance by $200 million and domestic operating costs by $150 million, on continued operational efficiency gains and schedule optimization <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">in the Permian and Gulf of America</a>.
So far, second-quarter 2025 guidance slightly trails JPMorgan expectations.
Jayaram notes that Occidental anticipates total production volumes in the GoA to reach 142 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (MBoe/d) for 2025.
Achieving this target would necessitate a significant increase in production during the second half of the year to approximately 158 MBoe/d, which is about 26% higher than the projected first-half 2025 average of 126 MBoe/d, adds the analyst.
Jayaram considers this a challenging goal, especially given the reduced capital allocation to offshore projects.
The analyst estimates the second-quarter total production of 1,413 Mboed (vs. street view of 1,420 Mboed) and FY25 production of 1,415 Mboed (same as consensus).

Neutral Territory For Occidental? JPMorgan Weighs Strong Q1 Against Future Challenges

U.S. stocks rallied Thursday after the Trump administration signed its first major trade agreement with the United Kingdom, igniting optimism about further global deals — especially with China — and lifting investor <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">appetite for riskier assets.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 jumped 1.3% to close at 5,700, led by gains in technology stocks. The Russell 2000 soared 2.1%, outperforming larger-cap counterparts and fully recovering the losses triggered by the April 2 tariff announcement.
Under the deal, the U.S. slashed tariffs on UK-made vehicles from 25% to 10%, granting British carmakers a 100,000-vehicle quota. In return, the UK reduced tariffs on American beef to near-zero levels and pledged to purchase $10 billion worth of Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) aircraft. Trump confirmed that the 10% tariff would remain the baseline for now, though he suggested other nations with large trade surpluses should expect higher rates.
During a press briefing, Trump hinted at the &#8220;biggest tax cuts in history&#8221; and urged investors to act: "You better go out and buy stock. This country will be like a rocket ship," he said.
The president also responded to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who noted a day earlier he hadn't been invited to meet with Trump. "I could call him from a meeting, but it's like talking to a wall," Trump said. 
"He's always too late [in cutting interest rates]. But in this case, it's not going to matter that much because our country is so strong."
Markets reflected that strength. The U.S. dollar rallied sharply as the new trade deal and reduced economic uncertainty boosted confidence. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) jumped to its highest level since April 11, climbing over 1% against the Japanese yen.
Treasury yields rose across the curve, with the 10-year yield adding 7 basis points to reach 4.34%.
In commodities, gold prices dropped as investors rotated out of safe havens. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) fell 1.5%, trimming its weekly gains. Oil prices rose 3.5%, with West Texas Intermediate crude topping $60 per barrel.
Crypto markets erupted higher. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) broke above $100,000 for the first time since February, rising 4.1%. Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) surged 13%, while Dogecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>) gained 10%.

Occidental Petroleum shares are trading higher. The company announced it reduced its debt by $2.3 billion year-to-date.

Occidental Petroleum Corp.&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>) shares are trading higher premarket on Thursday after the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/g45266538/occidental-announces-first-quarter-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">reported first-quarter results on Wednesday</a>.
Adjusted EPS of 87 cents&nbsp;per share, which beat the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">analyst consensus estimate of&nbsp;77&nbsp;cents</a>.
Quarterly revenue came in at&nbsp;$6.84 billion, which missed the analyst consensus estimate of&nbsp;$6.89 billion.
Total company production of 1,391 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day (Mboed), with average production for Permian, Rockies &amp; Other Domestic, Gulf of America, and International coming in at 754 Mboed, 292 Mboed, 121 Mboed, and 224 Mboed, respectively.
Operating cash flow stood at $2.1 billion, and capital spending of $1.9 billion in the quarter.
Occidental disclosed year-to-date debt repayments of $2.3 billion. Roughly $1.3 billion worth of divestitures closed in the first quarter of 2025.
Dividend: On May 1, the company disclosed a dividend of 24 cents per share, payable July 15, to shareholders of record as of June 10, 2025.
CEO Vicki Hollub said the company continues to reduce debt.

Why It's Important: Members of Congress are allowed to buy and sell stocks as long as they properly disclose the transaction.
The process has drawn scrutiny from the public and retail investors as members of Congress could have inside information and time their trades accordingly. Committee assignments in particular, often draw red flags from investors.
Greene serves on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability and the House Committee on Homeland Security with several subcommittee appointments. The congresswoman's past trade in technology and cybersecurity stocks has drawn attention with her role within Homeland Security.
Greene&#8217;s past trades of Palantir Technologies and a<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44255172/marjorie-taylor-greene-buys-more-bitcoin-etf-shares-ahead-of-trumps-strategic-reserve-executive-order"> Bitcoin ETF </a>have drawn criticism along with the timing of her trades, as she is a close ally to President Donald Trump. 
When asked previously about buying stocks earlier this year that soared days later after Trump announced a pause to tariffs, Greene<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/04/44852406/marjorie-taylor-greene-brushes-off-stock-buying-criticism-says-portfolio-manager-bought-the-dip"> brushed aside the criticism.</a>
&#8220;I think that criticism is laughable. President Trump has been talking about tariffs for decades,&#8221; Greene told reporters when asked about the trades at a recent town hall event in Georgia in a clip <a href="https://x.com/unusual_whales/status/1912456434081480777" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">shared </a>by Unusual Whales. The congresswoman used the opportunity to boast about her stock performance, which ranked her as one of the top trading members of Congress in 2024.
&#8220;I don&#8217;t place my buys and sells," Greene said, citing an agreement she has with her portfolio manager, who handles all the buying and selling of stocks. &#8220;He did a great job. Guess what he did. He bought the dip. And that&#8217;s what anybody that has financial sense does."
Greene also said her portfolio manager did not have inside information, everything was public and a potential tariff pause wasn&#8217;t a secret.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has reintroduced legislation that would ban members of Congress from trading or holding individual stocks.
The bill is known as the Preventing Elected Leaders from Owning Securities and Investments Act, or PELOSI Act based on the first letter of each of the main words. The name takes aim at the congresswoman and former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).  
&#8220;Members of Congress should be fighting for the people they were elected to serve — not day trading at the expense of their constituents,&#8221; Hawley&nbsp;<a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/hawley-reintroduces-pelosi-act-to-ban-congress-from-trading-stocks/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>. &#8220;Americans have seen politician after politician turn a profit using information not available to the general public.&#8221;
Hawley said the bill will help &#8220;restore Americans&#8217; trust in our nation&#8217;s legislative body.&#8221;
Hawley&#8217;s bill is being reintroduced as President&nbsp;Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://time.com/7280114/donald-trump-2025-interview-transcript/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">said&nbsp;</a>he would support such a ban.
&#8220;Well, I watched Nancy Pelosi get rich through insider information, and I would be okay with it. If they send it to me, I would do it,&#8221; Trump told TIME.
Trump said he would sign the ban if the bill passes Congress.
While Pelosi makes headlines for her trades, it&#8217;s important to remember that<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/politics/25/04/44852406/marjorie-taylor-greene-brushes-off-stock-buying-criticism-says-portfolio-manager-bought-the-dip" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">&nbsp;it is both Republican</a>&nbsp;and Democratic members of Congress who are profiting from buying and selling stocks and options while in office, with some trades coming with questionable timing or having a connection to committees they serve on.
In 2024, a list of the top-performing traders in Congress included six Republicans and four Democrats.

Occidental Petroleum (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OXY#NYSE">OXY</a>) reported quarterly earnings of $0.87 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.77 by 12.99 percent. This is a 38.1 percent increase over earnings of $0.63 per share from the same period last year. The company reported quarterly sales of $6.84 billion which missed the analyst consensus estimate of $6.89 billion by 0.74 percent. This is a 13.86 percent increase over sales of $6.01 billion the same period last year.

U.S. stocks traded mixed at midday Wednesday, as investors remained cautious ahead of the Federal Reserve&#8217;s upcoming policy decision, with Chair Jerome Powell set to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45258146/all-eyes-on-powell-betting-markets-reveal-what-the-fed-chair-is-most-likely-to-say-on-wednesday">speak at 2:30 p.m. ET.</a>
Trade developments continued to influence market sentiment. During a Senate hearing, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that initial talks with China will begin in Switzerland later this week, though he emphasized they are only preliminary.
Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) led notable decliners, plunging over 7% after a Bloomberg report indicated an Apple executive's testimony suggested AI may be eroding traditional search market share.

In commodities, U.S. natural gas prices at the Henry Hub surged over 5% to $3.640 per million British units, driven by recovering feedgas flows to Freeport LNG and forecasts for early-season heat boosting demand.
Gold retreated 1.5% after a strong two-day rally, while oil dipped 1.2% to $58.30 following a brief spike to $60 overnight.
