Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) has finalized a $425 million deal to sell its Porcupine mine in Ontario to Discovery Silver (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DSVSF#OTC">DSVSF</a>), thus concluding its divestment from non-core assets. This sale, consisting of $200 million in cash, $75 million in Discovery shares, and $150 million in deferred payments, is the latest step in Newmont's portfolio optimization, focusing on <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/mining">Tier 1 assets</a>.
"Today's announcement represents a significant milestone as we conclude our divestiture program," <a href="https://www.newmont.com/investors/news-release/news-details/2025/Newmont-Announces-Sale-of-Porcupine-Operation-for-up-to-425-Million/default.aspx">said</a> Newmont CEO Tom Palmer. "The proceeds from these non-core sales, totaling up to $4.3 billion, will enable us to reduce debt and return capital to shareholders."
Following the $19 billion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/23/05/32385120/newmont-takeovers-newcrest-in-a-largest-ever-gold-industry-deal">acquisition of Newcrest</a>, Newmont launched a divestiture program in February 2024, selling six operations and two projects across Australia, Ghana, and North America.
Located within the prolific Timmins gold camp, Newmont acquired Porcupine as a part of Goldcorp's portfolio in 2017. The site includes the Hoyle Pond and Pamour mines, the Dome milling facility, and the newer Borden mine. Together, the complex has contributed an average of 285,000 ounces of gold annually and holds significant exploration potential.

Despite divesting Porcupine, Newmont continues to maintain a strong presence in Canada. The Newcrest acquisition brought two assets within British Columbia's mineral-rich Golden Triangle—the Brucejack gold mine and a 70% stake in the Red Chris copper-gold mine.
Newmont has ambitious plans for Red Chris, including transitioning the operation to underground block cave mining.
"The thing with block cave mining is you have to do all your development work up front before you start having the cash generated from the mine," Palmer said in an <a href="https://www.biv.com/news/resources-agriculture/how-newmont-emerged-as-bcs-mining-giant-9811138">interview</a> for BIV, noting the cost estimate of $2 billion but low requirements for further capital expenditures.
"Once operational, the block cave project could significantly increase copper production, cementing British Columbia's position as a global leader in critical minerals," Palmer noted. He added, "We see our presence in BC extending well into the end of this century."
Long-term plans also include the Galore Creek project, which holds 12 billion pounds of copper reserves and is expected to increase Canada's copper production by 35%. Although this project will only commence after Red Chris is fully operational, its potential to supply critical metals aligns with the global energy transition trend, providing a lucrative diversification for a leading gold mining company.&nbsp;

Newmont Completes $425 Million Asset Sale, Focuses On British Columbia Growth

Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) plans to sell its Porcupine operation in Ontario, Canada, to Discovery Silver Corp. (OTC:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DSVSF#OTC">DSVSF</a>) <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/01/b43225185/newmont-announces-sale-of-porcupine-operation-for-up-to-425-million" rel="noreferrer noopener">for up to $425 million</a>.
The agreement includes $200 million in cash to be paid at closing, $75 million in equity through Discovery Silver&nbsp;shares to be issued upon closing and an additional $150 million in deferred cash consideration.
This strategic move is part of Newmont&#8217;s broader initiative to streamline its portfolio. Upon completion of this and other previously announced transactions, total proceeds from non-core asset divestitures and investments are expected to reach up to $4.3 billion.

With today&#8217;s announcement, the company has completed or secured definitive agreements for selling all six operations and one project classified as held for sale in its financial statements.
In December, the company sold its Cripple Creek &amp; Victor operation in Colorado to SSR Mining Inc. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42367959/newmont-exits-ccv-with-275m-sale-bolsters-focus-on-core-gold-and-copper-assets" rel="noreferrer noopener">for up to $275 million in cash.</a>

On the flip side, 1937 and 2000 stand out as exceptions, with losses of 4.6% and 2.4%, respectively, over the same period.

It's the holiday season, but the stock market's festivities have been anything but cheerful this week.
At the week&#8217;s start traders were buoyed by a record-breaking Nasdaq 100 topping 22,000 and an optimistic outlook on interest rate cuts ahead <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/12/42561549/fed-slashes-interest-rates-by-0-25-as-predicted-december-dot-plot-flags-only-2-potential-cuts-in-2025">of the Federal Reserve meeting</a>.
All signs pointed to the Santa Rally – a time Wall Street traditionally celebrates with stocks climbing during the final stretch of the year – making its grand entrance yet again in 2025.
Yet, just as traders were preparing for a festive year-end bull run, the Grinch arrived midweek to throw a wrench in the celebrations.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Grinch Steals The Show</h3>
Wednesday marked a dramatic turn of events as the Federal Reserve's hawkish tone sent shockwaves through the markets. 
Chair Jerome Powell delivered a lump of coal to investors by declaring a "new phase" for monetary policy. While the Fed had already cut rates by 100 basis points since September, Powell hinted at a prolonged pause, citing rates moving &#8220;meaningfully&#8221; closer to neutral territory. 
The implications were clear: the days of aggressive cuts are over. Even worse than that, the Grinch didn&#8217;t rule out the possibility of a rate hike next year. This unexpected twist sent shivers down traders&#8217; spines, leaving markets rattled.
The CBOE Volatility Index or VIX – Wall Street's so-called fear gauge – spiked over 70% on Wednesday, its sharpest single-day surge since February 2018. 
The S&amp;P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded their worst daily performances in over two years, while tech stocks sank like a stone in deep water.
Hopes for a Santa Rally seemed to crumble as the Grinch stole the show. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">A Christmas Miracle?</h3>
Just when it seemed all was lost, Friday brought a glimmer of hope—the kind of plot twist only a Christmas story could deliver. 
Fresh inflation data offered an unexpected gift to traders: the Fed's personal consumption expenditure (PCE) price index rose by 2.4% in November, falling short of the anticipated 2.5%. Even more encouraging, the core PCE, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, held steady at 2.8%, undercutting predictions of 2.9%.
This softer-than-expected inflation print was the equivalent to finding a shiny new toy under the tree.
Risk appetite rebounded swiftly, with traders rushing to scoop up the stocks battered during the week's earlier sell-off. 
Sentiment brightened, and with it, the Santa Rally narrative began to regain momentum.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Santa Rally And Its Legacy</h3>
The stock market has a long-standing tendency to rally during the last trading days of December. 
According to data from Seasonax, the S&amp;P 500 has posted gains during the Dec. 20–Dec. 31 period in 76 out of the past 96 years, averaging a 1.92% return. Over the last eight years, this year-end rally has been remarkably consistent, delivering positive returns each time.
In the past three decades, the S&amp;P 500 has ended the year on a high note in 24 of 30 instances. Even the losses have been relatively mild, with the most recent December downturn occurring in 2022 when the index slipped by 1.8% during the final days.
With six trading days left in 2024, traders may still have time to save the Santa Rally.

Traders Fight The Grinch To Save The Santa Rally: 10 S&P 500 Stocks Poised For A Year-End Surge

Shares of stocks in the broader metals and mining sector are trading lower amid overall market weakness following the Fed's rate decision to cut rates by 25 basis points.

In times of geopolitical uncertainty, investors often turn to stable assets like Newmont Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NEM#NYSE">NEM</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/partner/commodities/24/12/42459580/some-anticipate-a-bear-market-in-2025-but-geopolitical-conflicts-may-continue-to-drive-gold-p">to protect their wealth.</a>
Just recently, AFP <a href="https://www.yahoo.com/news/under-fire-scholz-trigger-german-135928390.html?fr=sycsrp_catchall">reported </a>that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a confidence vote, essentially marking the conclusion of his embattled administration. This political upheaval, coupled with the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42465746/french-government-collapse-challenges-macrons-grip-on-power">French government&#8217;s collapse</a> earlier this month, has set the stage for safe-haven speculation.
Billed as the world&#8217;s leading gold company, NEM stock represents a proxy for the precious metal. Historically, investors have viewed gold as the ultimate form <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-ratings/analyst-color/24/10/41390144/gold-could-reach-3-000-by-2025-bank-of-america-analyst-says-ultimate-perceived-safe">of wealth preservation.</a>
Another fundamental catalyst for higher precious metal prices is inflation. Analysts widely expect the Federal Reserve to announce a 25-basis-point <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/12/42514008/fed-poised-to-cut-interest-rates-by-0-25-this-week-heres-why-your-focus-should-shift-to-other-signals">rate cut</a> on Wednesday. Naturally, this anticipated action has reignited inflation concerns, which, all other things being equal, should be positive for gold.

Finally, NEM stock appears to be sitting on a psychologically significant technical support line at $40 per share. While the security has been volatile since late October, the negative velocity has slowed in recent sessions. Therefore, intrepid investors may look to NEM as a bounce-back candidate.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Laying the Framework of the Bull Call Spread</h2>
Of course, the easiest mechanism to speculate on Newmont stock is to buy the company's shares in the open market. However, this approach lacks leverage. Currently, the gold producer carries a market capitalization of nearly $46 billion. Simply put, there's likely not going to be much movement in its share price.
Subsequently, many retail traders turn to buying call options. According to data from the New York Stock Exchange, these market participants <a href="https://www.nyse.com/data-insights/trends-in-options-trading#:~:text=As%20Chart%201%20below%20shows,%2C%20reaching%2045%25%20in%20July.">tend to buy low-priced options</a>; that is, far out-the-money derivatives that have little chance of being net profitable.
A better approach may be to deploy the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/bull-spread">bull call spread</a>. Here, a trader buys a call for a particular options chain. However, the distinction between a straight call purchase and a bull call spread is that the trader simultaneously sells a call at a higher strike price (for the same expiration date).
To be fair, the structure of the trade caps the maximum reward (or payout) at the point represented by the higher short call strike. However, the benefit is twofold. First, the trader's net bullish position is discounted because the gross credit received from the short call helps partially offset the debit paid for the long call. Second, the threshold to profitability (i.e. the breakeven point) is effectively lowered by the aforementioned credit.
Therefore, the bull call spread allows traders to consider more probabilistically favorable transactions rather than taking longshot odds (such as "cheap" far OTM options).
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Calculating an Ideal Spread for NEM Stock</h2>
With a popular security like Newmont stock, there are several bull call spreads to choose from. Ideally, though, the name of the game is to target spreads that are likely to be successful while also providing adequate payouts.
To better understand the market's anticipated move, traders can deploy a stochastic analysis to calculate the projected share price movement. This process involves multiplying the stock price with its option chain's implied volatility (IV) and time decay adjustment (or the square root of the calendar days to expiration divided by 365 days).
For example, the Dec. 27 options chain expires in 11 calendar days and features an <a href="https://optioncharts.io/options/NEM/volatility-skew?option_type=all&amp;expiration_dates=2024-12-27:w&amp;strike_range=all">average IV</a> of 28.75%. Assuming a share price of $40.05, the product of the three metrics comes out to just under $2. In other words, the market anticipates, at most, NEM stock to rise to $42.05 or, at worst, fall to $38.05 by Dec. 27.
A compelling idea within this options chain may be to consider the 39/41 bull call spread (buy the $39 call, sell the $41 call). At time of writing, the net debit paid comes out to $110 (which is also the most that can be lost in the trade). Should the trade be fully successful — which would involve NEM stock reaching $41 or higher — the reward would be $90 or a nearly 82% payout.
