Opening in late 2027, the facility will increase Lilly&#8217;s total capital commitment in&nbsp;the United States&nbsp;to more than&nbsp;$23 billion&nbsp;since 2020. It is trying to stay ahead of its close competitor, Novo Nordisk A/S&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>).
Once fully operational, the Medicine Foundry is expected to add 400 full-time jobs.

Eli Lilly Reveals $4.5B Investment To Create The Lilly Medicine Foundry For Advanced Manufacturing And Drug Development

U.S. Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) is riding high on the popularity of weight loss drugs and is on the brink of becoming the world's first trillion-dollar pharmaceutical company.
According to data from <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pro/feature/newsfeed" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benzinga Pro</a>, the company's market cap stood at $796.4 billion, and its enterprise value at $821.9 billion.
The stock had almost doubled since May 2022 and outpaced S&amp;P500 and NASDAQ when the company received FDA approval for Mounjaro (tirzepatide) as an adjunct to diet and exercise <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/22/05/27213975/fda-approves-eli-lillys-new-type-2-diabetes-treatment-tirzepatide" rel="noreferrer noopener">for type 2 diabetes</a>.

In November, the FDA approved tirzepatide, dubbed Zepbound, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/23/11/35680340/weight-loss-drug-competition-fda-approves-expanded-use-of-eli-lillys-blockbuster-tirzepatide-for-" rel="noreferrer noopener">for weight loss</a>.
In a Financial Times <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ft.com/content/ed81ca79-1fd6-48ea-8e50-246d0849c3f5" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, CEO Dave Ricks recalls a time when Eli Lilly was struggling. In the late 2000s, the loss of patents on its psychiatric drugs, including Prozac and Cymbalta, pushed the company near all-time lows.

However, the company's fortunes have since reversed, with Eli Lilly now investing $20 billion in production facilities to meet the growing demand for its blockbuster drugs, and it is trying to stay ahead of its close competitor Novo Nordisk A/S (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>).
The company is also developing orforglipron, which could be the first small-molecule weight-loss pill when it launches in 2026, giving Eli Lilly a two-year lead before rivals catch up.
However, investors are cautious, noting that Eli Lilly's valuation is lofty, currently at $842 billion, 54x projected earnings over the next 12 months.
A top-10 shareholder of Eli Lilly told the Financial Times that investors are rushing into Eli Lilly, pushing it higher, but it's already priced for perfection. The shareholder warned that investors could face significant risks if concerns arise about competition from the ten other companies with weight-loss drugs or potential pricing pressures.
The company aims to strengthen its standing as one of the top 10 most valuable firms in the U.S. by outpacing its competitors.
Eli Lilly plans to reinvest its revenues into R&amp;D, aiming to escape the pharmaceutical industry's traditional boom-and-bust cycle.
CEO Ricks says the company is preparing for the future, particularly as it nears a "patent cliff" for its weight-loss drugs in the mid-2030s. By then, competition and pricing pressure could significantly affect profits.
The company is working on new treatments for obesity-related conditions, such as sleep apnea and cardiovascular disease, which could secure broader insurance coverage for its drugs.

Eli Lilly Nears First Trillion Dollar Pharma Title, But Investors Caution Amid Sky-High Valuation

Monday, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced that Medicare enrollees will benefit from reduced prices on 54 drugs through Medicare Part B, effective from October 1, 2024, to December 31, 2024.
The <a target="_blank" href="https://www.hhs.gov/about/news/2024/09/30/hhs-announces-cost-savings-for-prescription-drugs-thanks-to-medicare-inflation-rebate-program.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">program</a> aims to counter drug price hikes that exceed inflation, providing financial relief for over 822,000 Medicare beneficiaries who rely on these medications to treat conditions like cancer, osteoporosis, and pneumonia.

HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra emphasized that the Biden administration&#8217;s prescription drug policies are making a tangible impact on seniors and people with disabilities by reducing out-of-pocket costs.
According to Chiquita Brooks-LaSure, CMS Administrator, some Medicare beneficiaries could see daily savings ranging from $1 to as much as $3,854 on drugs included in the rebate program.
For example, a cancer patient using Novartis&#8217; AGs (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVS#NYSE">NVS</a>) Kymriah could save up to $3,000.
Brooks-LaSure also noted that the law disincentivizes drug companies from raising prices faster than inflation, which helps protect Medicare beneficiaries from sharp price increases.
The Inflation Reduction Act&#8217;s initiatives extend beyond 2024. In August, the administration reached new agreements to reduce prices for ten additional high-cost drugs.
Once these prices take effect in 2026, Medicare is projected to save an estimated $6 billion, while beneficiaries could see a reduction of $1.5 billion in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/08/40397706/biden-administration-targets-6b-savings-through-medicare-drug-price-negotiations" rel="noreferrer noopener">out-of-pocket expenses</a>.
Starting in 2025, Medicare Part D enrollees will further benefit from a $2,000 annual cap on prescription drug costs, down from the current cap of $3,500 for those with high expenses.
According to some analysts,&nbsp;Novo Nordisk A/S&#8217; (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVO#NYSE">NVO</a>)&nbsp;blockbuster diabetes drug&nbsp;Ozempic might be included, along with several other well-known medications, in the next round of negotiations, which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/08/40534249/novo-nordisks-ozempic-might-be-among-2027-medicare-price-negotiation-targets" rel="noreferrer noopener">is set for 2027</a>.
