Shares of Kohl's Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) tanked on Thursday after the company <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44514918/whats-going-on-with-kohls-corporation-stock-today">announced plans to close stores</a>.
A meeting with the company's new CEO Ashley Buchanan highlighted management's turnaround plan that will be put in place this year, according to Telsey Advisory Group.
The Kohl's Analyst: Analyst <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5888c53977f9dd0001877a22/dana-telsey">Dana Telsey</a> maintained a Market Perform rating and price target of $10.
The Kohl's Thesis: The company's new CEO "brings relevant retail experience" from his tenure with Blackstone Inc's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BX#NYSE">BX</a>) Michaels Companies and Walmart Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WMT#NYSE">WMT</a>), Telsey said in the note.

Mr. Buchanan played a key role in improving profitability, growing digital sales and simplifying the merchandising strategy at Michaels Companies, she added.
For Kohl's, the CEO identified six initiatives that would be implemented this year that are expected to deliver results over the next 18 months, the analyst stated.
"New merchandising strategy focuses on offering a more balanced, curated assortment that addresses the needs of all customers, both new and existing," she wrote.
Kohl's pricing strategy focuses on driving value through increased promotions, while "reducing the complexity of its offers," Telsey said.
"We were encouraged by management&#8217;s grasp of the challenges it faces and the strategies it has laid out thus far to address them," she wrote.
KSS Price Action: Shares of Kohl's had declined by 25.41% to $6.42 at the time of publication on Thursday.

Americans have been dealing with the rising costs of housing, groceries and transportation for years. A slew of new data suggests the formerly resilient U.S. consumer <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44420778/us-consumers-face-risks-as-rising-cost-of-living-job-market-cracks-threaten-spending-bank-of-america-warns">may be starting to crack. </a>
What To Know: The latest <a href="https://www.fitchratings.com/structured-finance/abs/auto-indices">report from</a> Fitch Ratings showed a growing number of people are unable to keep up with their car loan payments with 6.6% of subprime auto borrowers more than 60 days behind, marking the highest level since the data began being tracked in 1994. 
Additionally, a recent report from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York revealed <a href="https://www.newyorkfed.org/newsevents/news/research/2025/20250213">the number</a> of auto loans moving into serious delinquency — defined as being 90 days or more past due — increased to 3%, marking the highest level since 2010.

Another indicator is the Consumer Confidence Board Consumer Confidence Index <a href="https://www.conference-board.org/topics/consumer-confidence">which fell</a> sharply by seven points in February, indicating pessimism about current and future economic conditions. 
"In February, consumer confidence registered the largest monthly decline since August 2021," said Stephanie Guichard, senior economist, Global Indicators at The Conference Board. 
"This is the third consecutive month-on-month decline, bringing the Index to the bottom of the range that has prevailed since 2022, Guichard added. 
American households are running out of emergency funds which could be contributing to the bleaker financial outlooks. Data from the Federal Reserve shows that households' ability to come up with $2,000 for an emergency expense within the next month is at the lowest level since the survey started in 2015.
"Taking into account that the CPI level today is 35% higher than in 2015, the situation is even worse," said Dr. Torsten Slok, chief economist for Apollo Global Management.&nbsp;
What Else: Retailers are reporting demand is slowing, with Kohl's Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KSS#NYSE">KSS</a>) CEO Ashley Buchanan saying <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/03/44262764/kohls-ceo-warns-of-pretty-challenging-environment-for-consumers-expects-value-seeking-to-grow-over-next-3-months">last week</a> that customers making less than $100,000 are now feeling squeezed.

The survey showed some signs of political polarization, though Republicans, Democrats and Independents all reported declines in their economic expectations.

Diane Swonk, chief economist for KPMG, had similar worries.
&#8220;Sadly, the consumer sentiment figures have a stagflation vibe, which poses a challenge to the Federal Reserve. The current tariffs we saw are so large and staggered that they hit both margins and prices,&#8221; Swonk <a href="https://x.com/DianeSwonk/status/1900561364571041848">posted</a> on X.
Bill Adams, Chief Economist for Comerica Bank, similarly expressed concern about whether high inflation expectations would keep the Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates.
&#8220;This is bad news. People who fear losing jobs pull back on discretionary spending,&#8221; Adams said Friday. &#8220;Don't hold your breath for the Fed to ride to the rescue if spending falls as inflation expectations are soaring.&#8221;
Retailer Warns Pressure: On Tuesday, Kohl&#8217;s Corp. The company controlled its SG&amp;A expenses to report a "solid" earnings beat, despite a significant gross margin miss, according to Telsey Advisory Group.
The Kohls Thesis: Analyst <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/5888c53977f9dd0001877a22/dana-telsey">Dana Telsey</a> maintained a Market Perform rating, while cutting the price target from $13 to $10.
The Kohls Thesis: Despite the earnings beat, the company announced its 2025 outlook significantly below "the market&#8217;s prior (already-modest) expectations," Telsey said in the note.

The CEO indicated strategic initiatives will be undertaken over the next few quarters and that the turnaround will take time to complete, as Kohls is "a long lead-time business," she added.
"New leadership will look to bring stabilization to the business following several years of volatile performance, but visibility to a timeline to a turnaround to better profitability is challenging in our view, particularly against an increasingly uncertain macro backdrop," the analyst wrote.
Even after improvements in the assortment, value proposition and customer experience, it will take time for Kohls to win back consumers, she further stated.
KSS Price Action: Shares of Kohls had declined by 7.38% to $8.48 at the time of publication on Wednesday.
