On July 8, US President Donald Trump shook the biopharmaceutical sector by announcing a tariff of up to 200% on pharmaceuticals, which would take effect &#8220;very soon.&#8221; 80% of prescription drugs sold in the US are made abroad, a statistic the President wants to flip on its head.
Yet the new pharma trade policy isn&#8217;t as it appears to be. In a July 8 White House cabinet meeting press event, Trump changed the timeline for the new tariffs to &#8220;about a year, year and a half.&#8221; After the meeting, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said that more information on the new tariffs &#8220;will come at the end of the month.&#8221;
So far, pharmaceutical stocks don&#8217;t seem to be impacted one way or another by the 200% tariff call. Over the past five days, the benchmark S&amp;P 500 Pharmaceuticals Index is actually up by 4.2%, which is consistent with its performance over the past month.
That would change quickly if the tariffs were to go into effect, as the effect on drug prices and on pharma stocks would be extreme.&nbsp;
But whether the new policy goes into effect or not, three pharmaceutical companies are set to prosper anyway.
Let me show you why.
When the President first announced the new policy, pharmaceutical industry advocates warned that the tariffs would lead to higher drug prices, disrupt the sector&#8217;s supply chain, and negatively impact patients who rely on industry drugs.
&#8220;Every dollar spent on tariffs is a dollar that cannot be invested in American manufacturing or the development of future treatments and cures for patients,&#8221; noted Alex Schriver, senior vice president of public affairs for PhRMA, the industry&#8217;s biggest lobbying organization.
However, sector analysts aren&#8217;t too concerned about the new levies, if they ever arrive at all.
&#8220;Tariffs will not be implemented immediately,&#8221; said David Risinger, an analyst at Leerink Partners. &#8220;And it is unclear if the administration will follow through in the future.&#8221;
Others were more succinct.
&#8220;Tariffs schmariffs,&#8221; Jefferies analyst Akash Tewari stated in a July 9 research note.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">These 3 Big Pharma Stocks Should Thrive – Tariffs or No Tariffs</h2>
By and large, industry leaders seem unconcerned about the levy threat, as there&#8217;s no guarantee the tariffs will take effect, and because pharmaceutical companies have aligned with Team Trump and are pivoting to US-based research and manufacturing plants, they would likely feel little impact from US tariff hikes.
That&#8217;s especially the case with three key biosciences stocks that seem to be immune to the tariff troubles and that have plenty of reasons to feel good about their financial prospects going forward. Here&#8217;s a rundown.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Eli Lilly</h3>
Eli Lilly (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) management may not be overly concerned about the tariff news, but it&#8217;s not embracing the trade policy tactic either.
In a May, 2025 conference call, LLY CEO Dave Ricks noted his opposition to trade tariffs, &#8220;We support the U.S. government&#8217;s goals to increase domestic investment. However, we don&#8217;t believe tariffs are the right mechanism.&#8221; While calling for tax incentives as a preferred income strategy, Ricks acknowledged tariffs would &#8220;have a negative effect on Lilly and our industry.&#8221;
In February, Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly announced it would establish four new manufacturing sites in the US, shortly after word got out that the White House was planning to hike tariffs globally.
The call for a 200% tariff on pharmaceuticals hasn&#8217;t penalized Lilly share-wise, as it&#8217;s only down 0.8% over the past month. Investors appear to be more concerned with pricing issues and aggressive competition in the GLP-1 weight loss drug market.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Johnson &amp; Johnson</h3>
Healthcare product titan Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNJ#NYSE">JNJ</a>) made news in mid-July by hiking its estimated 2025 earnings, pegging earnings at $10.80 per share, up 15 cents from its last estimate. JNJ also reported $93.6 billion in sales, a $2 billion increase from the previous year. The company&#8217;s share price rose 6.2% on the news and is up 11.4% in the past 30 days.
Wall Street insiders view JNJ as a momentum stock right now, and popping the stock on your watchlist might be a good idea. For starters, Johnson &amp; Johnson embodies a diverse company, with 275 subsidiaries all tied to the pharmaceutical and medical supplies business, and 26 of those subsidiaries boast sales of $1 billion or more. Spreading the wealth enables JNJ to fortify itself against chaotic markets and volatile economies, which investors have seen plenty of in 2025.
The stock also boasts a substantial 3.4% dividend yield and has experienced six decades of consecutive dividend hikes. JNJ has the backing of key Wall Street analysts, who have a consensus &#8220;strong buy&#8221; rating on the stock, with a $175 price target. JNJ is currently selling at $169 per share with plenty of runway for more growth.
On the tariff front, JNJ sees the issue abating, reducing its estimated $400 million tariff losses in half, to $200 million, primarily due to a calmer China tariff environment in mid-2025. Stronger sales in the company&#8217;s MedTech division have also calmed any adverse trade policy conditions.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Novartis</h3>
Novartis (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVS#NYSE">NVS</a>) shares are meandering in mid-2025, with the stock down 2.28% for the past month but up 5.6% over the past 90 days. The Basel, Switzerland biopharma giant was exposed to Team Trump&#8217;s tariff threats, which had the US placing 30% tariffs on European imports. The discussion now centers on a 10%-to-15% tariff on the EU, which appears to be a level that should satisfy both sides of the geopolitical spectrum.
Shareholders should also approve of a newly announced $10 billion share buyback from Novartis management and will appreciate news of an upgraded earnings assessment for 2025. In its latest quarter, NVS recorded a net profit of $4.0 billion compared with $3.25 billion in the prior year period. Operating profits totaled $5.925 billion, a 21% increase from the same period last year.
Toss into the mix a tidy 2.88% dividend yield, and NVS shares become even more appealing, with the tariff issue fading away for now.

AstraZeneca plc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AZN#NASDAQ">AZN</a>) announced on Tuesday that it will invest $50 billion in the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care" rel="noreferrer noopener">United States by 2030</a>.
The investment will create new, highly skilled direct and indirect jobs nationwide, the company <a target="_blank" href="https://www.astrazeneca.com/media-centre/press-releases/2025/astrazeneca-plans-to-invest-50bn-dollars-in-the-us.html" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a>.
The cornerstone of this landmark investment is a new multi-billion-dollar U.S. manufacturing facility that will produce drug substances for the company's weight management and metabolic portfolio, including oral GLP-1, baxdrostat, oral PCSK9, and combination small-molecule products.
The new centre will produce small molecules, peptides, and oligonucleotides.
This multi-billion dollar capital investment is in addition to the $3.5 billion announced in November 2024.
The drug substance facility, planned for the Commonwealth of Virginia, would be AstraZeneca's largest single manufacturing investment in the world. It will leverage AI, automation, and data analytics to optimize production.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">What Does The Investment Include?</h2>
The $50 billion investment across R&amp;D and manufacturing footprint in the U.S. over the next five years also includes:

<li>Expansion of R&amp;D facility in Gaithersburg, Maryland</li>
<li>R&amp;D centre in Kendall Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts</li>
<li>Manufacturing facilities for cell therapy in Rockville, Maryland and Tarzana, California</li>
<li>Manufacturing expansion in Mount Vernon, Indiana</li>
<li>Specialty manufacturing expansion in Coppell, Texas</li>
<li>New sites to supply clinical trials.</li>
</ul>
The company said collectively, these investments will help deliver AstraZeneca's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/24/05/38936595/astrazeneca-targets-ambitious-80b-in-total-revenue-by-2030-through-pipeline-expansion" rel="noreferrer noopener">ambition of reaching $80 billion</a> in Total Revenue by 2030, of which 50% would be generated in the U.S.
Howard Lutnick, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, said: "For decades Americans have been reliant on foreign supply of key pharmaceutical products. President Trump and our nation's new tariff policies are focused on ending this structural weakness. We are proud that AstraZeneca has made the decision to bring substantial pharmaceutical production to our shores."
<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45234032/fda-expands-surprise-inspections-at-foreign-drug-and-food-facilities-targets-double-standards-in-overseas-manufacturing-oversight" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amid tariff uncertainty</a>, many drug companies are investing to boost production within the U.S. Most recently, Biogen Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BIIB#NASDAQ">BIIB</a>) said that it plans to invest an additional $2 billion in its existing manufacturing footprint in North Carolina's Research&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/health-care/25/07/46529101/biogen-bets-big-on-2-billion-expansion-to-boost-us-drug-manufacturing" rel="noreferrer noopener">Triangle Park (RTP)</a>.
Eli Lilly And Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LLY#NYSE">LLY</a>) doubled&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/02/43982604/eli-lilly-doubles-capital-spending-on-us-drug-manufacturing-with-50-billion-target" rel="noreferrer noopener">domestic medicine production</a>.
Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TMO#NYSE">TMO</a>) announced it would invest an additional $2 billion in the U.S. over&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/04/44995428/thermo-fisher-doubles-down-on-us-manufacturing-in-2b-expansion-plan" rel="noreferrer noopener">the next four years</a>.
Medtech firm&nbsp;Becton, Dickinson, and Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BDX#NYSE">BDX</a>) also announced its intention to invest&nbsp;$2.5 billion&nbsp;in U.S. manufacturing capacity&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/health-care/25/05/45140102/potential-tariff-bites-into-becton-dickinson-2025-profit-outlook-company-will-invest-2-5-billion-to-boost-us-manufacturing" rel="noreferrer noopener">over the next five years</a>.
Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc.&nbsp;(NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/REGN#NASDAQ">REGN</a>) seeks to nearly double its manufacturing capacity through a new agreement with&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/04/44931246/regeneron-partners-with-japan-based-fujifilm-to-bolster-us-manufacturing-capacity-via-3-billion-deal" rel="noreferrer noopener">FUJIFILM Diosynth Biotechnologies</a>. Novartis AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVS#NYSE">NVS</a>) unveiled a $23 billion investment plan to expand in the U.S.&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/25/04/44761201/novartis-commits-23-billion-to-expand-us-manufacturing-over-five-years-despite-tariffs-uncertaint" rel="noreferrer noopener">over the next five years</a>.

Trump Tariffs Forces AstraZeneca To Bring Substantial Pharmaceutical Production To US

Apple (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) has officially expanded <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/07/b46536386/apple-retail-arrives-in-the-kingdom-of-saudi-arabia-with-launch-of-the-apple-store-online" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">its retail presence</a> into Saudi Arabia by launching the Apple Store online and app, introducing direct customer support in Arabic.

This retail launch is just the beginning. Apple confirmed plans to open flagship physical stores in Saudi Arabia starting in 2026, including a significant location in Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage site. 
The expansion builds on Apple&#8217;s 2021 opening of the region&#8217;s first Apple Developer Academy in Riyadh, in partnership with the Saudi government, Tuwaiq Academy, and Princess Nourah University.
In May, President Donald Trump announced a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45390422/trump-unveils-historic-and-transformative-600-billion-saudi-deal-predicts-markets-will-go-a-lot-higher" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">$600 billion investment</a> pledge from Saudi Arabia into the U.S. economy on Tuesday, framing the deal as the beginning of a &#8220;golden era&#8221; of economic cooperation between the two countries.

("Protagonist" or the "Company") announced the submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by Johnson &amp; Johnson seeking the first approval of icotrokinra, a first-in-class investigational targeted oral peptide for the treatment of adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older with moderate to severe plaque psoriasis (PsO). Icotrokinra is uniquely designed to block the IL-23 receptor,which underpins the inflammatory response in plaque PsO and offers potential in other IL-23-mediated diseases.[1], [2], [3] Icotrokinra was jointly discovered and is being developed pursuant to the license and collaboration agreement between Protagonist and Johnson &amp; Johnson.
The NDA includes data from four pivotal Phase 3 studies conducted as part of the ICONIC clinical development program, including ICONIC-LEAD, a ICONIC-TOTAL,b ICONIC-ADVANCE 1 and ICONIC-ADVANCE 2.c Treatment with icotrokinra met all primary and co-primary endpoints across the development program among adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older with moderate-to-severe plaque PsO, demonstrating significant skin clearance and a favorable safety profile in a once-daily pill. Results from the ICONIC-ADVANCE 1 &amp; 2 studies show icotrokinra achieved co-primary endpoints and showed superiority to deucravacitinib in moderate-to-severe plaque PsO. Investment banks UBS and Macquarie Capital advised the pair on the unsuccessful attempt, according to Reuters. </li>
<li>SES <a href="https://www.ses.com/press-release/ses-completes-acquisition-intelsat-creating-global-multi-orbit-connectivity">closed</a> its $3.1 billion acquisition of Intelsat, creating a combined company with a fleet of 120 satellites across two orbits: 90 geostationary (GEO) satellites and nearly 30 medium Earth orbit (MEO) satellites. The company also has strategic access to low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites and a vast ground network.</li>

The South Carolina-based operator of 22 Del Taco outlets listed both assets and liabilities between $1 million and $10 million. What&#8217;s got its tortilla in a twist? Over $2.7 million in merchant cash advance (MCA) debt. Matador's parent company, Red Door Brands, which also runs Little Caesars and Arby's, says the financial drama is contained to Del Taco. Meanwhile, the Del Taco brand itself has been abruptly shuttering locations in Colorado.</li>

Deal Dispatch: Del Taco Tanks, Tylenol Maker Aches For Change, Joyebells Burns The Pie

Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNJ#NYSE">JNJ</a>) <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst-color/25/07/46472387/johnson-johnson-ups-forecast-beats-on-eps-but-wall-street-is-cautious">stalled out at resistance</a> around the $165 level. There tends to be resistance at price levels that had previously been resistance. As you can see on the chart below, that's the case here. This level was also resistance in March.

In March, traders and investors purchased shares at around $165. They thought it was the right thing to do.
But when the stock dropped after this, some of them questioned their judgment. They came to think that buying was a mistake because they had a losing position.
A number of these unhappy buyers decided to hold on to J&amp;J. However, they also determined that if the stock ever returned to their original buying price, and they could sell their shares at breakeven, they would.
So, when the stock rallied back to $165 yesterday, they placed sell orders. There were many of these orders. It made resistance form at the level once again.

The stock also just broke out of a classic ascending triangle pattern. This pattern is a graphical illustration of patient sellers and anxious buyers. These conditions set the stage for the subsequent move higher.
Starting in April, a large group of people wanted to sell J&amp;J around $157. They were content to be patient. If the buyers came to them, they would sell. But if not, they would hold their ground.
This is why the resistance line around $157 is horizontal.
However, over the same period, buyers became increasingly anxious and aggressive. They came into the market at higher prices. This is why the support line on the chart slopes higher.
Good traders understand charts.
They know that there can be resistance at former peaks. They also understand the dynamics that make this happen and how anxious buyers and passive sellers can force stocks into an uptrend.
If understood and applied correctly, technical analysis is a study of supply and demand in a market. Savvy traders will profit from this.

Shares of Johnson &amp; Johnson (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JNJ#NYSE">JNJ</a>) are under pressure Thursday, despite a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/07/46460380/johnson-johnson-credits-tariff-delays-for-strong-earnings-while-jim-cramer-pegs-it-on-lower-than-thought-levies">strong second-quarter earnings</a> report.

BofA Securities: Johnson &amp; Johnson earnings came in 3% higher than consensus. The company's operating leverage was "slightly diluted by higher tax," Anderson said in a note.
The company delivered a strong quarter and raised its full-year guidance, due to both its underlying performance and better forex impact, the analyst stated. In 2026, JNJ expects sales growth to be higher, but defers on margin accretion given tariff uncertainty.
Guggenheim Securities: Johnson &amp; Johnson reported second-quarter sales of $23.74 billion. It beat the consensus of $22.87 billion. Earnings of $2.77 per share came in higher than estimates of $2.68 per share, Divan said. 
Management raised their 2025 sales guidance from $91.0-$91.8 billion to $93.2-$93.6 billion and earnings outlook by 25 cents per share at the midpoint to $10.80-$10.90 per share.
RBC Capital Markets: The stock climbed after Johnson &amp; Johnson reported results, mainly due to "the quality of earnings," Singh said. Innovative Medicine gained market share while MedTech executed better than expected.
The company&#8217;s gross margin came in better than consensus by around 130 basis points. "JNJ lowered its expectations for tariffs ($200MM or 0.6% of MedTech sales, no pharma) and is committed to $55B U.S. investment over next four years to mitigate future tariff risks," the analyst wrote.
JNJ Price Action: Shares of Johnson &amp; Johnson had declined by 1.46% to $162.38 at the time of publication on Thursday.
