U.S. stocks settled lower on Tuesday, with the Dow Jones index falling more than 150 points during the session as investors assessed recent earnings reports.
Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>) posted better-than-expected earnings for its first quarter. Bank of America Corporation (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>) also reported stronger-than-expected earnings for its first quarter.
On the economic data front, the NY Empire State Manufacturing Index climbed to -8.1 in April compared to -20 in the previous month.
U.S. export prices came in unchanged in March compared to a revised 0.5% gain in February. U.S. import prices fell by 0.1% in March 2025 compared to a revised 0.2% gain in February.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with consumer discretionary, health care, and consumer staples stocks recording the biggest losses on Tuesday. However, information technology and real estate stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 156 points to 40,368.96 on Tuesday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.17% to 5,396.63, while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.05% to 16,823.17 during Tuesday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from Abbott Laboratories (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ABT#NYSE">ABT</a>), The Travelers Companies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TRV#NYSE">TRV</a>), and The Progressive Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PGR#NYSE">PGR</a>) today.

At a current reading of 18.4, the index remained in the &#8220;Extreme Fear&#8221; zone on Tuesday, versus a prior reading of 19.6.

Schiff outlined three possible explanations for this paradox. First, he theorized that Bitcoin advocates may still harbor the same concerns but feel compelled to support the economy due to <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/top-stories/25/04/44819009/donald-trumps-crypto-footprint-grows-a-monopoly-style-game-may-be-next">Trump&#8217;s pro-Bitcoin</a> stance. 
Second, rather than concerns about debt or inflation, which Bitcoin advocates have traditionally cited as reasons for supporting the asset, their bullish outlook may now be based on growing demand from the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, foreign governments, and institutional investors. 
Lastly, Schiff suggested that these advocates may have never truly believed in the economic concerns they voiced and merely used them as talking points to promote Bitcoin.
A popular trading-related X account, Stockwits Academy, responded sharply to Schiff&#8217;s remarks, questioning the notion that consistency is a virtue in a world dominated by centralized organizations.
&#8220;Bitcoiners aren't pivoting because they trust Trump, they're doubling down because they don't trust the system,&#8221; Stockwits Academy said. &#8220;Trump or Biden, Powell or Yellen, the clown show doesn't stop. Bitcoin is a vote of no confidence in all of them.&#8221;

Crypto Exchange OKX Enters US Market With New Headquarters, Says Looking Forward To 'Continued Innovation'

U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) has put forth a proposal for a substantial tax cut aimed at working-class Americans.
What Happened: Hawley&#8217;s proposal aims to make standard income tax breaks refundable against payroll taxes, potentially leading to a &#8220;historic&#8221; tax reduction for working families across the country. This initiative comes amid a time of high living costs and widespread financial hardship.
The proposed tax cut targets those earning less than $80,000 annually, a group Hawley believes has been largely neglected in Washington policy debates for years. He asserts that these are the Americans most in need of tax cuts.
In an op-ed column on The Washington Post, also detailed on Hawley&#8217;s Senate <a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/icymi-hawley-pushes-for-gop-to-give-working-class-americans-a-historic-tax-cut/">page</a>, the Senator wrote, &#8220;The negotiations over President Donald Trump's "big, beautiful" budget bill have to date included surprisingly little talk of tax cuts for the people who need them most: America's working class.&#8221;
Hawley proposes extending the largest income tax credits—the home mortgage deduction, the child tax credit, and the charitable deduction—to all Americans who pay payroll taxes. Currently, these credits are fully available only to those with high earnings and substantial income tax payments.
Hawley highlights that two-thirds of Americans pay more in payroll taxes than in income taxes. His proposal would allow these individuals to claim tax credits to reduce their tax liability, potentially saving them thousands of dollars each year.
&#8220;America's working people pay billions in taxes every year — but mostly in payroll taxes, the 15 percent levied on every paycheck and sometimes split with employers. And that's no small burden. In fact, the federal government takes in well over $1 trillion of this tax every year,&#8221; points out Hawley. &#8220;Republicans should fix this now,&#8221; urged the senator.

He then said that despite Tesla still being impacted by the tariffs, it's limited to auto parts only. &#8220;It will ultimately be finished cars vs auto parts. I think that'll be a significant difference, &#8221; Ives said.
