Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>) plunged 8.7%, staring down its worst day since March 2020 and wiping out nearly $300 billion in value. NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) tumbled 6.4%, losing $171.9 billion, while Amazon.com Inc. The S&amp;P 500 fell nearly 4%, poised for its worst session since September 2022, and sank to a seven-month low. Small caps took the brunt of the sell-off, with the Russell 2000 plunging over 5% and officially entering a bear market, now down more than 20% from its 2024 peak.
Fears of retaliatory action from key U.S. trading partners dragged every major sector into the red, except for defensive plays like consumer staples and utilities.
Consumer discretionary stocks were slammed. Apparel names posted double-digit losses: Ralph Lauren Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RL#NYSE">RL</a>), Nike Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NKE#NYSE">NKE</a>), Lululemon Athletica Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LULU#NASDAQ">LULU</a>) and Garmin Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) each dropped between 10% and 16%.
Cruise lines were also hit hard: Norwegian Cruise Holdings Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NCLH#NYSE">NCLH</a>) sank 13%, Carnival Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CCL#NYSE">CCL</a>) fell 10%, and Royal Caribbean Ltd. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RCL#NYSE">RCL</a>) slid 9%.
Bond markets saw a mild flight to safety. Treasury yields edged lower, yet the U.S. dollar weakened 1.6%, with the DXY index heading for its worst day since November 2022.
Commodities weren't spared. Oil prices nosedived on fears of a global slowdown, worsened by OPEC+'s surprise move to raise output. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged 7.5%, slipping below $70 per barrel.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) showed relative resilience in the carnage, dipping just 1% and holding above $81,600.

Wall Street Wipes Out $2 Trillion, Apple Eyes Worst Day Since COVID-19 Pandemic, Oil Plummets: What's Driving Markets Thursday?

If you&#8217;re analyzing contrarian opportunities in 2025, this list is worth studying. It highlights names that, despite widespread skepticism, have been <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings">outperforming more popular picks.</a>
In a year when Wall Street&#8217;s darlings have stumbled, some of the most unloved names in the S&amp;P 500 are quietly delivering gains that put high-conviction buys to shame—and the data may challenge how investors think about analyst ratings.
In a newsletter sent Tuesday, DataTrek Research spotlighted what it called "a truly remarkable list": the 10 S&amp;P 500 companies with the highest share of &#8216;Sell&#8217; ratings from analysts. 
&#8220;History and year-to-date returns suggest it is a good place to look for longs,&#8221; analysts suggested.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Contrarian Play: Most-Hated, Yet Outperforming</h3>
&#8220;Wall Street analysts don&#8217;t put &#8216;Sell&#8217; on many stocks,&#8221; Datatrek wrote.
FactSet data shows that of the 12,320 ratings issued on S&amp;P 500 stocks, 55.7% are Buys, 38.7% are Holds, and only 5.6% are Sells.
&#8220;The percentage of Buy ratings is above its 5-year (month-end) average of 55.0%. The percentage Hold ratings is below its 5-year (month-end) average of 39.1%. The percentage of Sell ratings is also below its 5-year (month-end) average of 5.9%,&#8221; FactSet said.

That performance handily beats the -2.36% decline of the S&amp;P 500, as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), and it's miles ahead of the -10% drop in the Magnificent Seven cohort, tracked by the Roundhill Magnificent Seven ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MAGS#NYSE">MAGS</a>).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The "Buy" Darlings Didn't Deliver</h3>
Now, contrast that with the 10 most-loved stocks in the S&amp;P 500 — the ones with the highest percentage of Buy ratings.
This basket includes mega-cap giants like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>), Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>), and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>), all ranked in the top tier for analyst sentiment.
But the returns tell a different story. An equal-weighted portfolio of these "Buy-rated" favorites would have lost 4.44% so far in 2025.

Shares of Garmin Ltd. It also recommended <a href="https://in.benzinga.com/25/02/43812509/garmin-q4-earnings-wearables-and-adventure-watches-drive-growth-raises-dividend-20-projects-68-billion-revenue-for-2025">20% dividend hike</a>.
Garmin reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2024 revenue growth of 23% year-on-year to $1.82 billion, beating the analyst consensus estimate of $1.70 billion. The GPS navigation and wearable technology company's proforma EPS of $2.41 beat the analyst consensus estimate of $2.03.
Garmin shares jumped 14.3% to $245.41 on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Garmin Ltd (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GRMN#NYSE">GRMN</a>) reported fiscal fourth-quarter 2024 revenue growth of 23% year-on-year to $1.82 billion, beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/n43808754/garmin-announces-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate of $1.70 billion</a>.&nbsp;
The GPS navigation and wearable technology company&#8217;s proforma EPS of $2.41 beat the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate of $2.03</a>.&nbsp;The stock gained after the report.

Segments: Revenue from Fitness grew by 31%&nbsp;year over year&nbsp;to $539.31 million, led by growth in wearables. Outdoor revenue increased by 29%&nbsp;year over year&nbsp;to $629.37 million, primarily due to growth in adventure watches.
Aviation revenue rose 9% year over year&nbsp;at $236.88 million,&nbsp;driven by the OEM and&nbsp;aftermarket product categories. Marine revenue increased by 5%&nbsp;year over year&nbsp;to $251.26 million, with growth across multiple categories. Auto OEM&nbsp;grew 30% Y/Y&nbsp;to $165.75 million, primarily driven by growth in domain controllers.
The gross margin increased 100 bps to 59.3%, and the&nbsp;operating margin climbed to 28.3% from 23.0% a year ago.
Garmin generated $399.2 million in free cash flow for the quarter, compared to $417.3 million a year ago.&nbsp;As of December 28, 2024, it&nbsp;held $3.7 billion in cash and equivalents.
Dividend: The board plans to propose an annual dividend hike of 20% to $3.60 per share ($0.90 per share payable quarterly).
FY25 Outlook: Garmin&nbsp;expects revenue of $6.80 billion versus the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus of $6.72 billion</a>. It&nbsp;expects a proforma EPS&nbsp;of $7.80&nbsp;against the&nbsp;consensus of $7.74.&nbsp;
Garmin&nbsp;stock surged 75% in the last 12 months as it has beaten analyst consensus estimates, at least for the preceding six quarters.
Price Action: GRMN stock is up 9.65% at $235.50 premarket at the last check on Wednesday.
