Gold and silver are higher amid a drop in Treasury yields following Dec. CPI data.

Wall Street staged a strong rebound on Wednesday, as mixed inflation data bolstered investor confidence in the Federal Reserve's continuation of easing cycle in 2025, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/01/43001512/inflation-rises-to-29-in-december-core-slows-yet-rising-energy-costs-put-feds-target-at-risk">easing recent market anxieties.</a>
The headline Consumer Price Index rose 2.9% year-over-year in December, up from November&#8217;s 2.7% and aligning with economist forecasts. On a monthly basis, headline inflation increased by 0.4%, up from November&#8217;s 0.3%, marking the sharpest monthly rise since March 2024.
The inflation report strengthened market expectations for Fed rate cuts in 2025. The probability of a rate cut by June climbed to 63%, up from 55% the previous day, with December futures now pricing in a 50% chance of two rate cuts.
The S&amp;P 500 advanced 1.5% by midday trading in New York, and the Dow Jones followed suit with a similar gain, both supported by strength in financial stocks. The Nasdaq 100 outperformed, rising 1.9%, while small-cap stocks posted a 1.7% gain.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WFC#NYSE">WFC</a>), Bank of New York Mellon Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BK#NYSE">BK</a>), and BlackRock Inc. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) surged nearly 2.2%, leading all S&amp;P 500 sectors and recording its strongest one-day gain in over two months.
In the bond market, yields on the 2-year Treasury note, which is highly sensitive to interest rate expectations, fell 9 basis points to 4.28%, while 30-year yields dropped 8 basis points to 4.89%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) gained 1.3% as bond prices rose.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY), as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), remained flat, with dollar strength against the euro offset by weakness versus the yen.
West Texas Intermediate — as tracked by the United States Oil Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/USO#NYSE">USO</a>) — rallied 2%, hitting $80 a barrel during the day amid a stronger-than-expected drop in commercial crude stocks last week.
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) jumped 2.6%, nearing $99,000, buoyed by optimism surrounding potential Fed rate cuts. Meanwhile, gold, tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), gained 0.5%.

Major indices rallied on Wednesday after December inflation data showed underlying price pressures slowing, reducing fears of a prolonged pause in interest rate cuts <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/01/43001512/inflation-rises-to-29-in-december-core-slows-yet-rising-energy-costs-put-feds-target-at-risk">by the Federal Reserve. </a>
The headline Consumer Price Index rose 2.9% year-over-year in December, up from November's 2.7%, matching economist forecasts. On a monthly basis, headline inflation increased 0.4%, accelerating from the 0.3% surge in November and marking the largest monthly rise since March 2024.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, rose 3.2% year-over-year, slightly below the expected 3.3%. Month-over-month, core prices gained 0.2%, in line with forecasts.
The inflation data boosted expectations for Fed rate cuts in 2025. The probability of a rate cut by June rose to 68% from 55% the previous day, with December futures now indicating a 58% chance of two cuts by year-end.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street Gains As Bond Yields Retreat, Financial Stocks Soar</h3>
The S&amp;P 500 index – as tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) – surged 1.5% in early New York trading, led by financial stocks after major banks reported strong fourth-quarter earnings.
JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), Citigroup Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/C#NYSE">C</a>), Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>), Wells Fargo &amp; Co. The Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>) rose 2.2%, leading all S&amp;P 500 sectors, while the SPDR S&amp;P Regional Banking ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/KRE#NYSE">KRE</a>) jumped 3.4%, reflecting strong performance among regional banks.
The Dow rose 1.6%, while the Russell 2000 index outperformed, climbing 2.6%. Tech stocks, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust, Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), gained 1.7%, boosted by falling Treasury yields.
Yields on the policy-sensitive 2-year Treasury note fell 9 basis points to 4.27%, while 30-year yields dropped 9 basis points to 4.88%. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) gained 1.6% as bond prices rallied.

Stocks Rise On Core Inflation Slowdown, Banks Rally After Strong Q4 Earnings, Treasury Yields Plummet

On Wednesday, mid-tier gold miner IAMGOLD (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IAG#NYSE">IAG</a>) announced production of 667,000 ounces in 2024, marking a 43% increase from the previous year. This performance met its revised guidance at a mid-point, owing to strong production at the Essakane mine in Burkina Faso and the Westwood and Côté Gold mine in<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/canada" rel="noreferrer noopener"> Canada</a>.
Essakane was the top producer, contributing 409,000 attributable ounces. While head grades decreased slightly in the latter half of the year, planned waste stripping positioned the mine for stable 2025 production of 360,000–400,000 ounces.
The Westwood complex in southwestern Québec also exceeded expectations, producing 134,000 ounces and surpassing its guidance of 115,000–130,000 ounces.
Côté Gold, which poured its first gold on March 31, contributed 124,000 attributable ounces, as CEO Renaud Adams<a target="_blank" href="https://www.iamgold.com/English/investors/news-releases/news-releases-details/2025/IAMGOLD-Announces-Preliminary-2024-Operating-Results--2025-Guidance/default.aspx" rel="noreferrer noopener"> called</a> the ramp-up "among the quickest" for a large-scale open-pit mine in Canada. Despite operational challenges, including a conveyor belt failure in December, the plant achieved several milestones, with periods of throughput exceeding nameplate capacity.
IAMGOLD aims to stabilize operations in 2025, with Côté expected to double production to 250,000–280,000 ounces attributable by year-end as the mine targets its full design throughput of 36,000 tons per day.
Côté's output is the primary driver for higher expectations for 2025, set for 735,000–820,000 ounces. The company anticipates all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) of $1,625–$1,800 per ounce, with costs decreasing in the second half of the year as Côté achieves greater efficiency.
Naturally, Côté will be the firm's exploration focus in 2025. Out of the $38 million budget, $13 million will go to Côté's resource conversion and district-wide exploration. The rest will serve to further drill at Essakane and advance the Nelligan project, which sits in the historic Chibougamau camp in Québec.
Despite a relatively low debt-to-equity ratio of 24.5%, IAMGOLD manages capital expenditures carefully, including $290 million in sustaining capital and $20 million in expansion projects.
Key projects include installing an additional secondary crusher at Côté Gold and continued development at Westwood and Essakane.
After a successful 2024, IAMGOLD is ready for more of the same. With Côté's advancement and strategic domestic exploration, the firm is well-positioned for growth toward one million ounces in attributable annual production within this decade.

Asia Ex-Japan And Europe Markets Gain, Dollar Cools - Global Markets Today While US Slept

On Monday, Alamos Gold (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AGI#NYSE">AGI</a>) announced it achieved record production in 2024, reaching 567,000 ounces of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/gold" rel="noreferrer noopener">gold</a>, or a 7% year-over-year increase. The company announced an ambitious plan to boost production while simultaneously reducing costs.
"With the solid finish to the year, we met both our quarterly and increased annual production guidance," <a target="_blank" href="https://s24.q4cdn.com/779615370/files/doc_news/2025/Jan/20250113_Alamos-Q424-Production-Three-Year-Guidance_Final.pdf" rel="noreferrer noopener">said</a> John A. McCluskey, President and CEO.
He noted that the company also achieved record revenues and free cash flow while strategically investing in high-return growth initiatives.
Alamos sold 141,257 ounces of gold at a realized price of $2,632 per ounce, generating $375 million in revenue, including silver sales.
Using the proceeds, the firm boosted its cash reserves to $325 million from around $225 million at the end of 2023.
Production hit the midpoint of guidance, which the firm revised by 13% higher in September to reflect stronger-than-expected performance. While the all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) for 2024 are projected to be at the higher end of the revised guidance range of $1,300 per ounce, costs in the fourth quarter are expected to be lower than those recorded in the third quarter, reflecting improved efficiencies.
Alamos is actively pursuing cost reduction strategies, aiming to lower its AISC by 6% by 2026 and 10% by 2027. The low-cost Island Gold District asset in Ontario is set to play a key role in this effort, as the firm plans to boost its output to nearly 400,000 ounces annually by 2027—more than doubling from today.
The ongoing Phase 3+ Expansion should play the main role in this growth plan. The expansion, set for the first half of 2026, will increase mining capacity to 11,200 tons per day, with evaluations underway to scale this further to between 15,000 and 20,000 tons per day.
Alamos has also commenced construction on the Lynn Lake project in Manitoba. This project is anticipated to produce 176,000 ounces of gold annually during its first decade of operations, with an AISC of approximately $699 per ounce.
Construction costs are estimated at $480 million, and production is slated to begin in the first half of 2028.
If successful, Alamos Gold will grow its output to 900,000 ounces by 2028, becoming a major low-cost producer with operations concentrated in low-risk jurisdictions.

Wall Street is gearing up for its most generous bonus season since the COVID-19 pandemic, with top traders and investment bankers poised to see double-digit increases as banks <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">reap robust trading revenues.</a>
According to a Bloomberg <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-09/wall-street-bonuses-to-jump-by-double-digits-at-biggest-banks?srnd=homepage-canada&amp;sref=TBDibEcD">report</a> shared Thursday, major investment banks like Bank of America Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BAC#NYSE">BAC</a>), JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/JPM#NYSE">JPM</a>), and Morgan Stanley (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MS#NYSE">MS</a>) are planning to raise year-end bonuses by over 10% for many of their trading desks.
At JPMorgan, bonuses for investment bankers are expected to climb as much as 15%, while Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GS#NYSE">GS</a>) may outpace its peers with even larger increases on select trading teams, according to people familiar with the matter.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">What's Driving The Bonus Boom?</h1>
This year's hikes mark a sharp reversal from the restrained payouts seen over the past two years when inflation outpaced modest bonus adjustments.
Banks have capitalized on surging trading activity and deal flow in 2024, positioning the sector for one of its best years in history.
Data from New York-based pay consultancy Johnson Associates, cited by the <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/4efe2abb-a55a-4c56-a5b4-90b95e06b344">Financial Times</a> in November, forecasts a 2024 pay jump across most banking sectors. 
Increases could reach up to 35% in areas such as trading and investment banking, though real estate and retail banking are set to lag.
In 2024, every major asset class — with the notable exception of bonds — has delivered positive returns.
Gold, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) topped the ranking surging by 26.7%, followed by stocks — represented by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — which rallied 23%.
<h1 class="wp-block-heading">A Decade of Record Bonuses</h1>
Wall Street has seen bonus payouts soar over the past decade. 
The average annual bonus hit $240,400 in 2021, more than doubling from $111,400 in 2011, according to APNews. 
This year, strong trading revenues are likely to provide the financial muscle for another sweet round of raises.

Asia Ex-Hong Kong Up, Europe Mixed; Dollar Hovers Near High - Global Markets Today While Us Slept

Goldman Sachs has postponed its projection for gold prices to hit $3,000 per ounce, shifting the timeline from early 2026 to mid-2026. The investment bank adjusted its expectations from the Federal Reserve, as tighter-than-expected monetary policy would influence <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/gold" rel="noreferrer noopener">gold prices</a>.
Goldman analysts Lina Thomas and Daan Struyven forecast gold to reach $2,910 per ounce by the end of the year. The bank's economists now anticipate 75 basis points of rate cuts in 2025, down from the previously expected 100 basis points.
"Opposing forces — lower speculative demand and structurally higher central bank buying — have effectively offset each other, keeping gold prices range-bound over the past few months," they said in a note per Bloomberg's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-06/goldman-pushes-back-3-000-gold-forecast-on-fewer-us-rate-cuts" rel="noreferrer noopener">report</a>, attributing the long-term demand to central banks buying appetite.
"Looking ahead, we forecast monthly purchases to average 38 tons through mid-2026," they stated.
Gold delivered a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/12/42502069/gold-poised-for-its-best-year-in-a-decade-while-bitcoin-surges-analysts-eye-2025-as-a-golden-era-for-precious-metal-amid-michael-saylors-push-for-btc-as-a-reserve-asset" rel="noreferrer noopener">robust performance</a> in 2024, gaining 27% due to monetary easing, central bank purchases, and lingering inflation fears. However, the rally lost momentum in late 2024 as the U.S. dollar strengthened following the election-driven optimism.
Still, the U.S. is finding other ways to take advantage of higher-for-longer gold prices. President Joe Biden just approved the final permit for the Stibnite Project in Idaho, a mining initiative led by Perpetua Resources (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PPTA#NASDAQ">PPTA</a>) and backed by billionaire investor John Paulson.
This project could supply more than 35% of the U.S. demand for antimony, a critical mineral essential for solar panels, flame retardants and military equipment, while also producing around 450,000 ounces of gold annually.
Although the project cost around $1.3 billion in 2020, the final number will be higher. Accounted reserves include 148 million pounds of antimony and 6 million ounces of gold, and production is set for 2028.
Antimony prices surged in 2024, rising over 200% and over 40% in a single day after China issued an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/trading-ideas/movers/24/12/42294914/mp-materials-are-on-the-rise-today-whats-going-on" rel="noreferrer noopener">export ban</a> on December 3.&nbsp;However, extreme price volatility and control over the market (China accounted for 48% of<a target="_blank" href="https://www.csis.org/analysis/chinas-antimony-export-restrictions-impact-us-national-security" rel="noreferrer noopener"> global production</a> and 63% of U.S. imports in 2023) are risky for producers.
Thus, the dual output of gold and antimony offers financial resilience, reducing dependence and insulating the project from external price fluctuations.&nbsp;

Goldman Sachs Delays $3,000 Gold Forecast, Sees Fewer Rate Cuts In 2025

On Friday, January 3, U.S. markets closed higher as investors anticipated Federal Reserve rate cuts and regulatory easing under the incoming Trump administration. Tech giants Tesla and Nvidia drove gains, though all major indexes recorded weekly declines. Robust economic data tempered expectations for further rate cuts, while optimism grew for the 2025 economic outlook.
According to economic data, the PMI of ISM manufacturing rose by 0.9 points in December, reaching 49.3 and surpassing market expectations of 48.4.
Every sector of the S&amp;P 500 ended in positive territory, with consumer discretionary, information technology, and real estate stocks leading the gains.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.80% and closed at 42,392.27, the S&amp;P 500 closed higher by 1.26% at 5,942.50, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.77% to finish at 19,621.68.

Natural Gas Jumps 8%, Dollar Cools, Asia And Europe Markets Mixed - Global Markets Today While US Slept

On Thursday, January 2, U.S. markets closed in the red, with Wall Street ending lower after a day of volatile trading. The session was shaped by strong labor market data, a strengthening dollar, and a decline in Tesla stock. Investors remained cautious, awaiting key employment data and fourth-quarter earnings, while uncertainties over Federal Reserve rate decisions and economic trends continued to weigh on sentiment.
In economic data, U.S. initial jobless claims fell to 211,000 last week, below expectations of 222,000. The S&amp;P Global manufacturing PMI slipped to 49.4 in December, slightly above preliminary estimates. Meanwhile, construction spending stalled in November, missing forecasts for a 0.3% increase after a revised 0.5% gain in October.
Most of the S&amp;P 500 sectors ended lower, led by losses in consumer discretionary, materials, and real estate stocks. In contrast, energy and utilities stocks defied the trend, closing with gains.

Dollar Hits New 2-Year High; Asia Markets Mixed, Europe Dips - Global Markets Today While Us Slept

Rolex SA, the Swiss luxury watchmaker, has raised prices on several of its models following an upswing in gold prices in 2024, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-01-02/rolex-kicks-off-2025-by-hiking-watch-prices-after-gold-soars?srnd=phx-industries&amp;sref=TBDibEcD" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bloomberg</a> reported.
According to the report, the price of the yellow gold Day-Date and yellow gold GMT-Master II has increased by almost 8% to 44,200 euros and 44,600 euros, respectively.
The price hikes follow gold&#8217;s remarkable 27% gain in 2024, reflecting its role as a safe-haven asset that remains prominent amid global economic uncertainties and geopolitical tensions.

While Rolex traditionally adjusts prices at the beginning of the year, this year&#8217;s changes surpass the 4% increases seen for some of its models in the beginning of 2024, Bloomberg noted.
According to a report, the gold prices are expected to continue their upward trajectory and reach $2,795 per troy ounce by the end of 2025, a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/25/01/42759408/gold-prices-to-climb-7-in-2025-amid-trumps-return-to-white-house-and-geopolitical-tensions-momentum-is-taking-back-over" rel="noreferrer noopener">7% increase from current levels</a>.
Central banks are likely to drive demand as they diversify reserves in the midst of geopolitical uncertainties.
Key drivers of the expected increase include central banks&#8217; diversification away from the U.S. dollar following sanctions on Russia, anticipated interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve, and rising concerns about U.S. <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/24/12/42594797/trump-wants-to-get-rid-of-the-debt-ceiling-30-year-treasury-bonds-fall-to-2024-lows-stocks-cut-gains" rel="noreferrer noopener">government debt</a> under President-elect&nbsp;Donald Trump.
