Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's unexpectedly hawkish remarks on Thursday sent markets into a tailspin. Major U.S. equity indices closed in the red, and the dollar soared for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">a fifth consecutive session</a>.
In a speech to Dallas business leaders, Powell highlighted the remarkable strength of the U.S. economy, indicating that there's no need for the Fed to &#8220;be in a hurry to lower rates.&#8221;
He reiterated the central bank's commitment to reaching its 2% inflation target, stressing the need for careful decision-making as inflation remains above desired levels.
He highlighted productivity gains, which he said have &#8220;grown faster over the past five years than at any point in the two decades preceding the pandemic,&#8221; positioning the U.S. economy as &#8220;the best-performing among major economies.&#8221;
Addressing the October <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41971830/producer-inflation-rises-more-than-expected-in-october-should-traders-rethink-interest-rate-cut-path">producer price index (PPI) uptick</a>, Powell labeled it &#8220;more than an upward bump&#8221; but maintained confidence in the trajectory toward the 2% inflation goal.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Markets Reassess Interest Rate Path: Traders Are Less Confident On A December Cut</h3>
Powell&#8217;s comments impacted the interest-rate market, with fed futures now reflecting a reduced likelihood of a 25-basis-point cut in December. 
The CME FedWatch tool shows the odds of such a move dropped to 58%, sharply down from around 80% earlier in the day.
The S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), closed down 0.6%, fully erasing gains from last week&#8217;s rate cut. Energy was the only sector in positive territory, rising 0.4%, while industrials and health care led declines, each down 0.7%.
Top performers in the S&amp;P 500 included Tapestry Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TPR#NYSE">TPR</a>), Wynn Resorts Ltd. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/WYNN#NASDAQ">WYNN</a>), and First Solar Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FSLR#NASDAQ">FSLR</a>), which rose 12.8%, 8.7%, and 7.2%, respectively. Among the laggards were Leidos Holdings Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/LDOS#NYSE">LDOS</a>) and Super Micro Computer Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SMCI#NASDAQ">SMCI</a>), down 13.6% and 11.4%, respectively.
Tech stocks, as tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), declined 0.7%, marking a fourth consecutive loss. Blue chips followed by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>) slipped 0.5%, while small caps in the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>) underperformed, falling 1.3%.
The dollar continued to attract liquidity, with the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) logging a fifth consecutive gain, reaching levels last seen in late October 2023.
Treasury yields also rose, with the 10-year yield closing at 4.46%. Gold, tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), marked its fifth straight loss.
In crypto markets, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) was 1.7% lower in the past 24 hours to $88,013 at 5:21 p.m. ET, on track for its worst day in November.

Powell's Hawkish Remarks Shake Markets: Stocks Fall, Dollar Rockets, Bitcoin Dips

On Wednesday, November 13th, U.S. markets ended mixed. The Dow and S&amp;P 500 edged higher while the Nasdaq dipped. October CPI data met expectations, supporting bets on a December Fed rate cut. Core CPI rose 0.3%. Consumer discretionary stocks gained, driven by optimism over potential rate cuts.
According to economic data, the annual U.S. inflation rate increased to 2.6% in October, up from 2.4% in September, matching market expectations. The consumer price index (CPI) climbed 0.2% on a monthly basis in October.
Consumer discretionary, energy and real estate led S&amp;P 500 gains Wednesday, while tech and communication services stocks declined.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.11% and closed at 43,958.19, the S&amp;P 500 rose 0.02% to 5,985.38, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.26% to finish at 19,230.72.

<li>Bonds rose and yields fell on inflation data.</li>

<li>&nbsp;Bitcoin was pulling back before CPI was released.&nbsp; Aggressive buying came in after the release of the data.</li>
<li>None of the foregoing would make sense based on the data alone, but Wall Street's thinking is that the Fed will be under pressure from Trump to cut rates in December – the fact that the data does not support a rate cut does not matter because of the political pressure.</li>
</ul>

<li>Momo gurus are already out with a new reason to buy stocks – inflation was hot but not worse than expected.</li>
<li>Trump has announced that Musk and Ramaswamy will head the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).&nbsp; On a lighter note, Doge is the crypto coin that was developed as a joke and subsequently championed by Musk.&nbsp; An indication of extreme sentiment is that the joke coin is now worth more than Ford Motor Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>).&nbsp; On a serious note, if Musk is truly able to cut $2T out of the federal budget, expect a recession and a 20% &#8211; 40% drop in the stock market.&nbsp; In The Arora Report analysis, the primary driving force behind this stock market rise is the excess money in the system.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
<li>Initial jobless claims and Producer Price Index will be released tomorrow at 8:30am ET and maybe market moving.</li>

There is a sigh of relief in Chinese and Asian markets in that even though Trump is appointing China hawks, he has not appointed extreme China hawks so far.

In the early trade, money flows are neutral in Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>).

Benzinga Market Summary: CPI Falls In Line With Estimates, Chip Stocks Pull Back, Gold Continues Lower As US Dollar Rises

Investors can breathe a sigh of relief as October inflation data met economists&#8217; expectations, though the annual headline rate showed a slight uptick <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41938762/october-inflation-rate-rises-to-2-6-as-expected-december-interest-rate-cut-remains-uncertain">from the previous month.</a>
As anticipated, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 2.6% year-over-year in October, marking an increase from September's 2.4% but snapping six straight months of declines.
Excluding food and energy, core inflation held steady at 3.3% for the third consecutive month, highlighting some stickiness in underlying price pressures that remain above the Fed&#8217;s 2% target.
In response to the data, speculators raised their expectations for an interest-rate cut, with increased bets on a 25-basis-point reduction in December. Market-implied probabilities now indicate a 79% likelihood of a December rate cut, up from 58% before the CPI report, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
Following the release, Minneapolis Fed President Neel Kashkari expressed optimism about inflation&#8217;s trajectory, stating on Bloomberg TV, &#8220;I have confidence inflation is headed in the right direction.&#8221; 
On Tuesday, Kashkari had flagged the risk of a rate pause in December if inflation data <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/24/11/41919011/feds-kashkari-warns-of-december-interest-rate-pause-risk-surprises-to-the-upside">surprises to the upside. </a>
&#8220;I am not yet seeing a lot of upside inflation risks; the bigger risk is getting stuck,&#8221; he added on Wednesday. 
Markets reacted positively, with U.S. equity futures slightly rising, while Treasury yields and the dollar eased amid increased rate-cut expectations.

Markets Breathe Sigh Of Relief After In-Line Inflation Data: Stocks Rebound As Small Caps, Bonds Soar

On Tuesday, November 12, U.S. markets ended lower as investors took profits after a post-election rally, anticipating upcoming inflation data. Worries over Trump&#8217;s inflationary policies, rising Treasury yields, and weak European markets intensified the decline.
According to economic data, U.S. consumer inflation expectations eased to 2.9% in October, down from 3% in the prior four months. The RealClearMarkets/TIPP Economic Optimism Index jumped 13.4% in November to 53.2.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors declined, led by materials, health care, and real estate, while tech and communication services rose against the trend.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.86% and closed at 43,910.98, the S&amp;P 500 fell 0.29% to 5,984.00, and the Nasdaq Composite declined 0.09% to finish at 19,281.40.

Probability based risk reward adjusted for inflation does not favor long duration strategic bond allocation at this time.
Those who want to stick to traditional 60% allocation to stocks and 40% to bonds may consider focusing on only high quality bonds and bonds of five year duration or less.&nbsp; Those willing to bring sophistication to their investing may consider using bond ETFs as tactical positions and not strategic positions at this time.

Asia And Europe Markets Cool Off, Dollar Strengthens To 4-month High - Global Markets Today While US Slept

The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) witnessed its biggest weekly outflow in over two years driven by a post-election shift in sentiment following <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/donald-trump">Donald Trump's election victory. </a>
What Happened: The world's largest physically backed gold ETF just saw an outflow of $1 billion between Nov. 4 and Nov. 8, according to data from ETF.com. 
Investors appear to be cashing out of the safe-haven asset, banking on a strong dollar under a second Trump term.
The trend comes after gold hit a record high of $2,789 per ounce at the end of October — a level that marked a 35% year-to-date gain. That&#8217;s the metal's strongest performance since 1979.
The rally pulled back in recent days as gold prices fell 6%. November is now shaping up to be the worst month for gold since September 2023.

Why It Matters: Last week's $1 billion outflow from the SPDR Gold Trust is the largest weekly outflow since July 2022. Investors are evidently taking profits and reallocating funds amid shifting market expectations.
Analysts suggest that gold's decline is largely a reaction to Trump's economic policies. Trump's promises of tax cuts for the wealthy and deregulation have fueled expectations for faster economic growth. It&#8217;s worth noting that overall economic growth <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/dereksaul/2024/11/01/how-the-economy-really-fared-under-bidenharris-and-trump-from-jobs-to-inflation-final-update/">never</a> hit 3% a year when Trump was president.
Trump also pitched tariff plans as a boost to domestic manufacturing and reduce dependency on foreign goods. Economists warn that <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/personal-finance/24/09/40961812/economists-warn-trumps-plans-for-tax-cuts-tariffs-and-deportation-could-trigger-skyrocketing-inf">they&#8217;ll worsen inflation</a>. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>), often touted as &#8220;digital gold,&#8221; has instead seen strong gains in recent days, hitting fresh record highs. Some analysts, like longtime gold advocate Peter Schiff, dismiss the cryptocurrency's rise as speculative.
"Bitcoin's rise has nothing to do with its supposed fundamentals," Schiff wrote on social media X. 
"The U.S. dollar is rising, gold is falling, and the U.S. economy is believed to be on the verge of a boom, with debt-to-GDP plunging, reducing the need for U.S. dollar alternatives. It's a Trump-inspired mania."

Here's the JPMorgan breakdown on what to watch in metals as this political shift unfolds.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">"Timing and Sequencing Will Be Critical" For Base Metals</h2>
As tariff tensions escalate, Peterson and his team emphasize that "policy timing and sequencing will be critical." They anticipate that China's response will likely be "a more reactive mechanism" once tariffs are in place, rather than a proactive approach. In practical terms, this suggests that the market may start to factor in "risk premia" in the weeks ahead.
Traders should buckle up as base metals brace for near-term turbulence, holding off for now on any major plays.
Investors in base metal ETFs such as the United States Copper Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CPER#NYSE">CPER</a>) and the Invesco DB Base Metals Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DBB#NYSE">DBB</a>) should remain wary of their holdings.

On Thursday, November 8th, U.S. markets ended mixed after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 25 basis points, citing an eased job market and progress toward the 2% inflation target. Optimism over President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s return lifted the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq to record highs, with global markets rallying in response.
Financials led declines among S&amp;P sectors, reversing strong gains from the previous session as bank stocks fell sharply.
The Federal Reserve cut rates by 0.25 points to a 4.5%-4.75% range, slowing the pace of easing from September&#8217;s 0.5% cut.
In economic data, U.S. initial jobless claims rose to 221,000 in late October, while Q3 nonfarm productivity increased by 2.2% and unit labor costs grew by 1.9%. Wholesale inventories fell 0.2% in September, and natural gas stocks climbed by 69 billion cubic feet to 3.932 trillion.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was flat and closed at 43,729.34, the S&amp;P 500 rose 0.74% to 5,973.10, and the Nasdaq Composite soared 1.51% to finish at 19,269.46.

Asia Markets Mixed, Europe, Crude Oil, Gold And Dollar Cool Off - Global Markets Today While US Slept

The U.S. stock market closed at record highs Thursday after the Federal Reserve's widely expected decision to lower interest rates and Fed Chair Jerome Powell's press conference where he reassured markets by dismissing concerns about his potential resignation or removal following the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/24/11/41823887/powell-dismisses-talk-of-resignation-after-trump-victory-says-policy-is-still-res">election of Donald Trump. </a>
The S&amp;P 500 — as tracked by SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) — closed at 5,973 points, up 0.7% for the day.
Tech stocks outperformed the broader market, with the Nasdaq 100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), surging 1.5% higher to an all-time high of 21,100 points.
Notably, the combined market capitalization of the Magnificent Seven — Microsoft Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NYSE">MSFT</a>), Apple Inc. The Dow Jones stalled after Wednesday&#8217;s 3.6% rise, while small caps eased 0.4% following a 5.8% jump the previous day.
Top-performing sectors in the S&amp;P 500 were technology, up 1.8%, followed by communications services and consumer discretionary, both up by 1.3%. Financials, which rallied the most Wednesday, lagged on Thursday, down 1.5%.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Fed Cuts Rates, Powell Dismisses Concerns Over His Future </h3>
The Federal Reserve cut interest rates by 0.25% to 4.5%-4.75% as expected, a reduction in the pace of easing after the larger 0.5% cut in September.
The Fed recognized robust economic momentum, with the GDP rising by 2.8% in the second quarter, and resilient consumer confidence.
Powell downplayed weak October employment data, noting that near-zero job growth was largely due to temporary factors like strikes and hurricanes rather than underlying economic weakness.
Powell described the rate cut as part of a "further recalibration" of monetary policy, which he emphasized remains "restrictive." He hinted at the possibility of more easing in the future but refrained from signaling a specific rate cut at the December meeting, stressing a data-dependent approach.
When asked if he would resign if requested by Trump, Powell responded firmly, "No," reiterating that the president does not have the legal authority to remove the Fed chair.
Following Powell's comments, market-implied expectations for a 25-basis-point rate cut in December surged to 75%, recovering from Wednesday's post-election dip.
Treasury yields pulled back sharply, with the 10-year yield dropping 10 basis points to 4.33%, almost erasing the spike from the previous day.
The U.S. dollar weakened 0.7%, while gold prices, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), rebounded 1.8% after Wednesday&#8217;s 3% slump. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) traded up by 1% at 4:30 p.m. in New York, hitting a record-high of $76,990 during the session.

<li>The chart shows when the contrary Arora call was made that bonds would fall.&nbsp; That call was made at a time when everyone was predicting that bonds would rise.&nbsp;</li>

<li>The FOMC will announce its rate decision at 2pm ET, followed by Powell's press conference at 2:30pm ET.</li>
<li>The consensus is that the Fed will cut rates by 25 bps.</li>
<li>In The Arora Report analysis, the Fed could not possibly be happy about the large drop in bonds after the last rate cut.&nbsp; We will be paying careful attention to what Powell says about the drop in bonds in his press conference.&nbsp; If Powell says anything about this subject, it will be the most important new information that can be gleaned today.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
<li>Most institutional investors and many retail investors have suffered massive losses in bonds. &nbsp;It is important to remember that the largest amount of money is still managed using the 60/40 portfolio as a starting point.&nbsp; This means 60% in stocks and 40% in bonds.&nbsp; The Arora Report has long shown that following the protection band is heads and shoulders above following the 60/40 portfolio.&nbsp; Nonetheless, the dogma of 60/40 remains popular.&nbsp; This is the reason we publish information on 60/40 portfolios.&nbsp; For those following the 60/40 portfolio, The Arora Report call has been to limit the duration to less than five years.&nbsp; The Arora Report call on duration has been consistent at a time when a vast majority of money managers were significantly increasing duration. The longer the bond duration, the larger the losses investors have suffered.</li>
<li>In The Arora Report analysis, after Trump's election the Fed is faced with two important issues:

<li>In The Arora Report analysis, depending upon how Trump implements his tariff plan, it may add 0.5% &#8211; 1% to inflation.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li>
<li>According to the nonpartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, Trump's tax plans will increase the national deficit by $7.8T over the next 10 years.&nbsp; All of this deficit will have to be financed by borrowing.&nbsp; This will increase the supply of Treasuries.&nbsp; A higher supply of Treasuries will lead to higher interest rates on the long end, unless the Fed decides to manipulate it with quantitative easing or some other artificial method.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>At a time when the stock market is at an all time high and bonds are suffering major losses, there is not good news on the economic data front.&nbsp;&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Unit labor costs are spiking.&nbsp; Q3 Unite Labor Costs &#8211; Preliminary came at 1.9% vs. 0.5% consensus.</li>
<li>As of this writing, the momo crowd is oblivious.  However, expect smart money to pay attention to this important, highly inflationary data. Also expect the Fed to pay attention to this data.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Initial jobless claims came at 221K vs. 222K consensus.&nbsp; This indicates that the employment picture remains strong, especially at the low end.</li>
<li>In The Arora Report analysis, there is another important question that the Fed will have to face.  Trump plans to deport undocumented immigrants.  According to the Department of Homeland Security, there are about 11M undocumented immigrants in the U.S. What happens to labor supply at the low end if 11M workers are taken out of the workforce?  What does it do to inflation?  What does it do to economic growth, and in turn the stock and bond markets? </li>
</ul>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">England</h3>
The Bank of England has cut interest rates.&nbsp; The key interest has been reduced to 4.75% from 5%.
This is the first cut by a major central bank after Trump's election. &nbsp; Investors should keep an eye on how the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan act after Trump's election.&nbsp; Remember, the U.S. economy is intertwined with the global economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bonds And Fed Front And Center As Bonds Approach Bottom Support Zone After Trump Win

On Wednesday, November 6th, U.S. markets closed at record highs as Donald Trump won the 2024 presidential election. Investors anticipated lower taxes, deregulation, and Trump&#8217;s active stance on economic matters. The Dow, S&amp;P 500, and Nasdaq surged, while bitcoin also reached new highs.
Tesla shares surged, fueled by CEO Elon Musk&#8217;s endorsement of Trump, alongside gains in Trump Media &amp; Technology Group. Treasury yields rose amid expectations that higher tariffs could drive up inflation and expand the U.S. deficit.
According to economic data, U.S. mortgage applications dropped 10.8% last week, while crude oil inventories rose by 2.149 million barrels, exceeding the forecast of 1.8 million.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors closed higher, led by consumer discretionary, industrials, and financials, while consumer staples and real estate lagged.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 3,57% to close at 43,729.93, the S&amp;P 500 rose 2.53% to 5,929.04, and the Nasdaq Composite soared 2.95% to finish at 18,983.47.
