Adding to the intrigue, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent sought to quash speculation that the government might revalue its bullion holdings, stating that such a move is "not what I had in mind" when discussing plans for a sovereign wealth fund. Bessent confirmed that he has no plans to visit Fort Knox, the secure facility that houses much of the US gold reserve, stating that "all the gold is there" and that any senator is welcome to verify it. Trump, on his part, has emphasized his administration's commitment to ensuring that these reserves are properly accounted for.
China is another major factor in the mix that investors should monitor. Beyond the People's Bank of China's aggressive bullion purchases, Beijing recently approved a policy allowing insurance companies to invest in gold. Gold has been on a tear this year so far, as you can see by the&nbsp;Sprott Physical Gold Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PHYS#NYSE">PHYS</a>) chart below.&nbsp;

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Trends Toward Peace And Disinflation&nbsp;</h2>
Nevertheless, several different trends emerged this week that may be bearish for gold:&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>The beginning of the end of The Russia-Ukraine War. War, and geopolitical uncertainty are traditionally bullish for gold. This week, we got intimations of the the opposite. President Trump and President Putin spoke by phone, and Russia and the United States agreed to exchange prisoners and to begin negotiating an end to the war in Europe. The Trump administration already conceded that the Ukraine would not be admitted to NATO, U.S. troops would not serve as peacekeepers there, and any peacekeepers stationed between Russia and the U.S. would not be covered by NATO&#8217;s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nato.int/cps/en/natohq/topics_110496.htm">Article 5</a>.</li>
<li>More olive branches from President Trump. President Trump said he&#8217;d like to see Russia back in the G-7 (it was called the G-8 at the time), and he planned to propose to both President Putin and President Xi of China that all three countries cut their military spending in half. </li>
<li>Major steps to cut U.S. federal spending. All else equal, more government spending means more inflation, which can be bullish for gold. This week saw some steps in the opposite direction: Elon Musk&#8217;s Department of Government Efficiency continued to identify government waste, and the Trump administration began massive layoffs of government employees. </li>
<li>RFK Jr. confirmed as Secretary of Health and Human Services. A lot of federal spending goes to managing chronic diseases, and Robert Kennedy, Jr. as HHS Secretary intends to take steps to reduce America&#8217;s chronic disease burden.&nbsp;</li>
</ul>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How To Lock In Gold Gains</h2>
If you are a conservative investor, the simplest way to lock in some of your gold gains would be to sell some gold. If you&#8217;d rather not sell, you can also hedge, by using a gold-tracking ETF with options traded on it such as GLD. Currently, the cost of hedging against large declines in gold is extremely cheap.&nbsp;

Time To Lock In Gold Gains

On Thursday, U.S. markets closed higher, boosted by Nvidia, Apple, and Tesla, after Trump proposed reciprocal tariffs. Stocks gained as producer prices rose while core inflation remained stable. Treasury yields fell, indicating confidence in cooling inflation. The Nasdaq and Dow also advanced, with the S&amp;P marking its strongest rise since mid-January.
According to economic data, the Producer Price Index rose 3.5% annually, the highest since early 2023, exceeding forecasts. Monthly growth also surpassed expectations at 0.4%. Core PPI, excluding food and energy, increased by 3.6% yearly and 0.3% monthly, both above projections.
All eleven S&amp;P 500 sector indexes advanced, with materials leading the gains and consumer discretionary, which also saw a strong increase.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.77% and closed at 44,711.43, the S&amp;P 500 closed higher by 1.04% at 6,115.07, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.50% to finish at 19,945.64.

Asia And Europe Markets Mixed, Gold Advances - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Gold's historic rally may be far from over. Bank of America hinted the precious metal could climb to $3,500 per ounce, driven by investment demand and central bank buying amid growing global economic and policy uncertainties.
In a note shared Wednesday, Bank of America commodity strategist Francisco Blanch said gold's rally has been largely fueled by "exceptional purchases by the official sector" as central banks seek to hedge against geopolitical and fiscal risks. 
Spot gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – is currently trading at $2,920 per ounce as of Feb. 13, 2025, up 11.3% year-to-date. 
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Will Gold Reach $3,500?</h3>
For gold to average $3,000 per ounce in 2025, investment demand needs to rise by just 1%, according to Bank of America's analysis. 
Yet, reaching $3,500 would require a more significant 10% jump. While this might seem like a steep climb, Blanch indicated that it's "not impossible."
One major factor supporting this outlook is China's recent decision to allow insurance funds to invest in gold through various financial instruments. 
China's Financial Supervision Administration has launched a pilot program that could unlock as much as $25 billion to $28 billion in gold purchases, equivalent to about 300 metric tons, or 6.5% of the annual global market.
Chinese insurers, managing an estimated $4.4 trillion in total assets, are now permitted to allocate up to 1% of their portfolios to gold. With declining returns on traditional investments and a growing appetite for safe-haven assets, Bank of America's analysts believe insurers will likely use their full allowance within a year.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Central Banks And Geopolitical Uncertainty</h3>
Global central banks have been aggressively accumulating gold, largely as a hedge against geopolitical and economic instability. 
&#8220;We agree that&nbsp;the gold market is pricing in&nbsp;increased&nbsp;policy tensions,&#8221; Blanch said.
The World Gold Council reported that total gold demand hit a record 4,974 metric tons in 2024, with central bank purchases exceeding 1,000 metric tons for the third consecutive year.
Gold investment also surged in 2024, with demand rising 25%—the highest annual growth rate since 2020. Gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which had seen heavy outflows in previous years, stabilized as investors turned to the metal amid market uncertainties.
"Total gold demand (including OTC investment) rose 1% year-over-year in Q4 to reach a new quarterly high and contribute to a record annual total," the World Gold Council said in its latest report.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">The Impact Of US Policy: Could The Dollar Actually Weaken? </h3>
One of the key uncertainties supporting gold demand is the direction of U.S. economic policy under President Donald Trump.
Trump administration is considering fresh tariffs on key trading partners, a move that could initially strengthen the U.S. dollar, according to Bank of America. Yet, policymakers are also discussing efforts to weaken the currency in an attempt to rebalance the elevated U.S. trade deficit, which could eventually support gold prices.
Bank of America's note highlighted that "the call for a weaker USD is also discussed along with a push to rebalance external accounts." A weaker dollar typically makes gold more attractive to international investors.
If investment demand continues its upward trajectory, gold's run may be far from over. Whether it reaches $3,500 will depend on just how much more investors and institutions flock to the metal in the months ahead.

Gold Could Reach $3,500 As Demand Rises On 'Increased Policy Tensions,' Says Bank of America

Gold is trading higher following greater-than-expected January PPI figures.

Inflation is back in the spotlight as broad-based price pressures hit U.S. producers in January 2025, fueling concerns that businesses will either absorb rising costs or pass them to consumers and dampening hopes for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">Federal Reserve interest rate cuts. </a>
The Producer Price Index surged 3.5% year over year in January, according to Thursday's release from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
This marks an acceleration from December's 3.3% and exceeds the 3.2% forecast tracked by TradingEconomics. January's surge also represents the highest annual reading since February 2023 and the fourth consecutive increase in the headline index, highlighting persistent inflationary pressures.
On a monthly basis, PPI climbed 0.4%, decelerating from December's 0.5% and surpassing the expected 0.3%.
The hotter-than-anticipated PPI follows a similarly stronger-than-expected Consumer Price Index report on Wednesday, which showed consumer inflation climbing 3.3% year over year.
Within major PPI categories, energy recorded the highest monthly increase, up 1.7% in January. 
&#8220;Over half of the broad-based January advance can be traced to a 1.7-percent increase in prices for final demand energy,&#8221; the BLS said.
Yet, even when excluding volatile food and energy costs, the core PPI soared 3.6% annually, slightly easing from December's upwardly revised 3.7% but still above the 3.3% estimate. 
On a monthly basis, core PPI surged 0.3%, slightly easing from an upwardly revised 0.4% reading in December and matching the expected 0.3%.
On Wednesday, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/02/43676811/producer-inflation-preview-why-is-fed-chair-powell-closely-watching-thursdays-wholesale-prices">Fed Chair Jerome Powell said </a>that an overheated PPI, combined with the already strong CPI, could push up the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index, the central bank's preferred inflation measure.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Market Reactions</h2>
Although the PPI report came in hotter than expected, investors didn&#8217;t immediately pile into the dollar or unload stocks and Treasuries, as typically seen with strong inflation data.
The U.S. Dollar Index, tracked by Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>), fell slightly minutes after the PPI release.
Treasury yields remained steady, with the 10-year yield holding 9 basis points to 4.63%. Rising yields pressured risk assets, sending stocks lower.
Futures on the S&amp;P 500 index, closely tracked by SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), rose 0.2% by 8:38 a.m. ET.
In the crypto market, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) held steady at $96,100, down 1.9% for the session.

Inflation Fears Grow As Producer Prices Rise To 3.5%, Clouding Fed Interest Rate Cut Hopes

On Wednesday, U.S. markets closed mixed, with the S&amp;P 500 declining as unexpectedly high inflation data heightened concerns about delayed Fed rate cuts. Nvidia and Amazon weakened, weighing on the index, while strong earnings lifted CVS and Gilead. Inflation worries also challenged Trump&#8217;s tariff plans, adding to market uncertainty.

U.S. stocks are wavering as investors have braced themselves for potential shifts in tariff policies from President Donald Trump. Markets remain cautious as Trump prepares to unveil his universal like-for-like tariff plan, set for midweek. On Feb. 10, the President imposed 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports starting March 4, intensifying pressure on top trading partners Canada and Mexico. Investors are weighing the potential impact of a trade war on corporate earnings, global growth and inflation.
Trump&#39;s steel tariffs could trigger a broader trade war as the EU threatens &lsquo;proportionate countermeasures. Tensions between the United States and China had already escalated after the United States implemented a 10% tariff on Chinese imports on Feb. 4. In response, China retaliated with tariffs on U.S. products, including a 15% levy on coal and liquefied natural gas (AMEX:LNG) and a 10% tariff on crude oil, agricultural machinery and automobiles from Feb. 10.
Meanwhile, UBS believes that the U.S. effective tariff rate on China will&nbsp;<a href="http://www.aastocks.com/en/stocks/news/aafn-news/NOW.1414645/1" target="_blank">eventually rise to 30%</a>&nbsp;from the current 11%. Investors are also worried about the Fed&#39;s policy momentum. Benzinga Market Summary: January Inflation Comes In Above Estimates, CVS Stock Surges On Strong Earnings, Bitcoin And Gold Move Lower as CPI Figures Dampen Rate Cut Outlook

Price pressures surged more than expected in the first month of the year, fueled by increases in both energy goods and underlying service items, dampening investor expectations for Federal Reserve <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/interest-rates">interest rate cuts</a>.
The headline Consumer Price Index rose to 3% year-over-year in data released Wednesday, up 0.1 percentage points compared to December and above median economist forecasts of 2.9%, as tracked by TradingEconomics. On a monthly basis, inflation grew by 0.5%, sharply outpacing expectations of 0.3% and accelerating from December&#8217;s 0.4% gain.
This marks the highest monthly inflation rate since August 2023.
Core inflation, which excludes volatile food and energy prices, inched up from 3.2% to 3.3% year-over-year. On a monthly basis, core inflation rose 0.4%, surprising estimates of 0.3% and outrunning December&#8217;s 0.2% increase.
Prior to the January inflation report, markets had fully priced in just one rate cut by the end of the year, while the probability of two reductions by December 2025 stands at about 42%, as per the CME FedWatch tool.
&#8220;The index for shelter rose 0.4 percent in January, accounting for nearly 30 percent of the monthly all items increase,&#8221; the Bureau of Labor Statistics indicated Wednesday. 
Fuel oil rose by 6.2% on the month, recording the highest monthly increase among CPI items. 
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump reaffirmed his stance that interest rates should be reduced, indicating this move would align with tariff policies.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell is set to testify before the Committee on Financial Services later on Wednesday.

The U.S. dollar index, which is tracked by the&nbsp;Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>),&nbsp;rallied 0.5% shortly after the release.
Treasury yields rose,&nbsp;with the 10-year yield up by 9&nbsp;basis points to 4.63%.
Gold, as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), tanked by 1%, along with futures on major U.S. indices.
Contracts on the S&amp;P 500 index, which is closely tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust&nbsp;(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), were down 1.1% by 8:37 a.m. ET. 
Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) plummeted 2% to below $95,000.

Inflation Rises More Than Expected In January, Chills Interest Rate Cut Hopes

On Tuesday, February 11, U.S. markets closed mixed, with gains in Coca-Cola and Apple countering Tesla&#8217;s decline. Fed Chair Powell signaled no urgency for rate cuts, citing a strong economy. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.28% and closed at 44,593.65, the S&amp;P 500 closed higher by 0.03% at 6,068.50, while the Nasdaq Composite slid 0.36% to finish at 19,643.86.

While gold continues to climb toward its historic milestone of $3,000 per ounce, propelled by the escalating tariff wars, gold miners have <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43590446/gold-prices-near-3000-outpacing-us-equities-as-it-hits-a-fresh-record-high-amid-donald-trumps-trade-war-led-market-uncertainty" rel="noreferrer noopener">lagged this success</a>. Rising labor costs, foreign government pressures, and inflation are squeezing profitability, raising questions on whether they can catch up.
Gold's recent performance has been stellar, as the precious metal gained 27% in 2024 and over 11% in the first six weeks of 2025. However, mining equities have not kept up the pace.
Top majors Barrick (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOLD#NYSE">GOLD</a>) and Newmont NYSE: NEM) reported disappointing third-quarter earnings, as all-in-sustaining costs (AISC) rose by 20% and 13%, respectively.
"Labor remains one of the substantial expenses for miners, and we expect the inflation story to continue playing out over the next year or so," Sarah Tomlinson, director of mine supply at Metal Focus, noted for Reuters.
In Australia, a major gold-producing country, the Albanese government's "<a target="_blank" href="https://ministers.dewr.gov.au/watt/same-job-same-pay-growing-wages-australian-workers" rel="noreferrer noopener">Same Job, Same Pay</a>" legislation has increased wages for mine workers. The policy, which came into effect last November, ensures that temporary workers receive the same pay as permanent employees performing the same job.
Thus, 120 workers in New South Wales mines saw annual wages rise by up to $22,000, with another 1,500 workers likely to benefit from similar adjustments. While this policy promotes wage equity, it has added to miners' cost burdens, particularly in an industry grappling with labor shortages and declining interest in mining careers.
Rising gold prices have also driven governments' interest in boosting royalty participation within their jurisdictions. The military-led government has introduced new royalties and tax demands in Mali, Africa's fourth-largest gold producer. The government has increased its share of mining revenues and ordered Barrick to pay back <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/commodities/24/10/41571989/mali-government-threatens-barricks-loulo-mine-permit-over-disputes-on-economic-benefit-sharin" rel="noreferrer noopener">hundreds of millions</a> in taxes and dividends.
In turn, this had a double-whammy impact: effectively, it drove down the country's production—which <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/global/25/02/43588936/malian-gold-output-falls-23-as-new-mining-law-pressures-producers" rel="noreferrer noopener">fell by 23%</a> in 2024—while making operations there less profitable.
Still, the gold mining industry has been grappling with rising AISC for years. Since 2016, the average AISC has climbed steadily, driven by higher energy, materials, and labor costs.
In 2022, AISC reached a record high of $1,276 per ounce, up 18% year over year, <a target="_blank" href="https://ibisingold.com/en/article/gold-mining-costs-have-reached-record-levels-what-is-next-for-the-metal" rel="noreferrer noopener">per</a> IBIS InGold.
Despite producer cost pressures, gold's long-term outlook remains strong. Sabrin Chowdhury, head of commodities analysis at BMI, expects it to continue outperforming other metals.
"Gold is benefiting strongly from economic and geopolitical risks, and we expect it to remain elevated," Chowdhury recently <a target="_blank" href="https://www.fitchsolutions.com/bmi/events/mining-and-metals-key-themes-2025-04-02-2025" rel="noreferrer noopener">noted</a>, highlighting central bank buying, trade tensions, and FED's rate cuts as supporting factors.
