The United States and China agreed to slash their retaliatory tariffs by over 100 percentage points, pausing a spiraling trade war that had threatened<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s"> to choke global growth.</a>
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">What's In The Deal?</h3>
The agreement establishes a 90-day reset, slashing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%, starting May 14. 
The decision stems from high-level negotiations in Geneva, led by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and China's Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The truce halts one of the steepest protectionist escalations in recent history, following President Donald Trump's aggressive "Liberation Day" trade tariffs launched on April 2.
"We reached an agreement on a 90-day pause and substantially moved down the tariff levels," Bessent said in a press conference. 
"Both countries represented their national interests very well, but we concluded we have shared interest in balanced trade."
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Tariff Truce Cools Recession And Inflation Risks</h3>
The tariff rollback offers more than diplomatic relief — it also addresses growing fears of a U.S. economic slowdown and resurgent inflation. By averting the triple-digit import taxes that threatened to choke global trade, the deal removes a significant source of economic uncertainty that had weighed on business investment and consumer confidence.
Recession probabilities have sharply declined in response. 
The latest market-based forecast from Kalshi shows a 46% chance of a U.S. recession this year, down from 60% at the end of April, reflecting improving sentiment. Notably, consumer spending and corporate earnings had begun showing early signs of strain under the tariff shock imposed in April.
On the inflation front, the agreement is expected to ease price pressures on goods most impacted by the trade war — including electronics, automotive parts and industrial equipment.
Ahead of Tuesday's official April Consumer Price Index report, economists expect a return to monthly inflation growth: headline prices are forecast to rise 0.3%, reversing March's 0.1% dip. Core inflation is also expected to rise 0.3%, while annual inflation rates are seen holding steady at 2.4% for headline and 2.8% for core.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Markets Cheered</h3>
U.S. equity futures soared as the news hit, with futures on the S&amp;P 500 climbing 3.13% to 5,836.66, those on the Nasdaq 100 jumping 4.05%, and Dow futures up 2.62%. 
The U.S. dollar index – as tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – surged 1.4%, with the greenback rallying 2% against the Japanese yen. 
Meanwhile, 2-year Treasury yields rose 10 basis points to 4%, as traders dialed back expectations for a near-term Federal Reserve rate cut. The odds of a June cut fell to 11%, down from 25% a week ago, per CME FedWatch.
Gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – dropped 2.9%, with investors rotating out of safe havens, and oil climbed 3.9% to $63.40 amid improving global demand prospects.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Who Wins On Wall Street?</h3>
U.S. equities rallied sharply as investors welcomed the truce between Washington and Beijing. 
Trade-sensitive and consumer-facing stocks led the premarket advance, reflecting relief over lower input costs and reduced supply chain disruption. Technology and industrials also posted notable gains.

Wall Street Rips Higher As Tariff Truce Halts US–China Economic Escalation

On Friday, May 9th, U.S. markets closed mixed, as investors focused on Trump&#8217;s call to lower Chinese tariffs ahead of weekend trade talks. While earnings remained strong, concerns over trade tensions and economic risks kept markets subdued. Energy stocks gained, but healthcare lagged, and Fed officials warned of growing tariff-related risks.
According to economic data, U.S. jobless claims dropped by 13,000 to 228,000, beating the 230,000 estimate, while nonfarm labor productivity fell by 0.8%, slightly worse than the expected 0.7% decline.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors ended higher Friday, led by real estate, consumer discretionary, and energy. Health care and communication services declined.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 0.29% at 41,249.38, the S&amp;P 500 declined 0.07% to 5,659.91, and the Nasdaq was almost flat at 17,928.92.

Asia Markets Mixed, Eurozone Gains; Oil Rises On Trade Deal Hopes - Global Markets Today While US Slept

U.S. stocks rallied Thursday after the Trump administration signed its first major trade agreement with the United Kingdom, igniting optimism about further global deals — especially with China — and lifting investor <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">appetite for riskier assets.</a>
The S&amp;P 500 jumped 1.3% to close at 5,700, led by gains in technology stocks. The Russell 2000 soared 2.1%, outperforming larger-cap counterparts and fully recovering the losses triggered by the April 2 tariff announcement.
Under the deal, the U.S. slashed tariffs on UK-made vehicles from 25% to 10%, granting British carmakers a 100,000-vehicle quota. In return, the UK reduced tariffs on American beef to near-zero levels and pledged to purchase $10 billion worth of Boeing Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BA#NYSE">BA</a>) aircraft. Trump confirmed that the 10% tariff would remain the baseline for now, though he suggested other nations with large trade surpluses should expect higher rates.
During a press briefing, Trump hinted at the &#8220;biggest tax cuts in history&#8221; and urged investors to act: "You better go out and buy stock. This country will be like a rocket ship," he said.
The president also responded to Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, who noted a day earlier he hadn't been invited to meet with Trump. "I could call him from a meeting, but it's like talking to a wall," Trump said. 
"He's always too late [in cutting interest rates]. But in this case, it's not going to matter that much because our country is so strong."
Markets reflected that strength. The U.S. dollar rallied sharply as the new trade deal and reduced economic uncertainty boosted confidence. The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) jumped to its highest level since April 11, climbing over 1% against the Japanese yen.
Treasury yields rose across the curve, with the 10-year yield adding 7 basis points to reach 4.34%.
In commodities, gold prices dropped as investors rotated out of safe havens. The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) fell 1.5%, trimming its weekly gains. Oil prices rose 3.5%, with West Texas Intermediate crude topping $60 per barrel.
Crypto markets erupted higher. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) broke above $100,000 for the first time since February, rising 4.1%. Ethereum (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/eth/usd">ETH</a>) surged 13%, while Dogecoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/doge/usd">DOGE</a>) gained 10%.

Gold&#8217;s latest surge, inspired by China&#8217;s safe-haven dash, a declining dollar and a geopolitical situation more knotted than a string of Christmas lights—has investors abuzz. While spot gold jumped 3.03% on Tuesday to $3,414.24, astute gold seekers are digging deeper. 
Meet the VanEck Merk Gold ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/OUNZ#NYSE">OUNZ</a>), the golden child of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">physically backed ETFs that</a> offer a &#8220;just-in-case&#8221; delivery feature for those who prefer their portfolios to include physical bullion.

Tax-Smart And Apocalypse-Ready?
Receiving delivery of gold via OUNZ is not taxable since you&#8217;re technically not claiming anything you don&#8217;t already possess. It&#8217;s the gold version of grabbing a pizza you&#8217;ve already paid for online. Just don&#8217;t go for a Krugerrand, though. Its below-95% purity makes it a tax gray area, warns Merk.
Greater Appeal In An Unpredictable World
In the post-pandemic era, investor demand for physical gold has widened. The erstwhile niche &#8220;gold bug&#8221; segment has mainstreamed, with inflation anxiety and sovereign debt mountains rising. Merk assertively believes this is just the start. Importantly, coin premiums have not spiked—typically a telltale sign of strong retail engagement. While retail interest has grown, much of the buying has come from institutions. In that sense, central bank gold purchases have not directly influenced retail appetite,&#8221; Merk explained.

On Friday, May 2nd, U.S. markets closed higher, as strong U.S. jobs data and signs of U.S.-China tariff talks boosted risk appetite. The S&amp;P 500 marked its longest winning streak in over 20 years. While megacap tech stocks cooled, financials and chipmakers outperformed. Treasury yields surged, and European markets closed higher on revived trade hopes.
In economic data, U.S. nonfarm payrolls rose 177,000, beating forecasts and easing tariff worries, while the jobless rate held at 4.2%. March factory orders jumped 4.3% to $618.8 billion.
Most S&amp;P 500 sectors rose Friday, led by financials, communication services, and industrials, while healthcare and consumer staples fell.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.39% to 41,317.43, the S&amp;P 500 gained 1.47% to 5,686.67, while the Nasdaq gained 1.51% to 17,977.73.

Asia And Europe Markets Mixed, Gold Gains, Oil Slides On OPEC+ Output Hike - Global Markets Today While US Slept

A historic divergence is unfolding across asset classes, with gold surging to its best presidential-term start since Gerald Ford while U.S. stocks post their worst performance since the same era, and Bank of America's chief strategist Michael Hartnett says investors are increasingly betting on policy shifts to rescue the market <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s">from soft macroeconomic headwinds.</a>
In a note shared Friday, Hartnett outlined how the "second 100 days" of Donald Trump's 2025 presidency could bring a pivot toward lower tariffs, lower rates and lower taxes — a bullish trifecta for risk assets.
That shift, he said, could revive appetite for equities, even as recession signals persist in the economic data.
Just a week ago, Hartnett said a sustainable bull market would need three things: lower Treasury yields under 4%, consistent earnings growth above 5%, and a meaningful U.S.-China tariff rollback. His strategy remained: "Stay BIG, sell rips" — favoring bonds, international stocks and gold while fading rallies in U.S. equities.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Best Start For Gold In Nearly 50 Years</h3>
Gold is the standout performer year to date, up 22%, marking its best opening 100 days since the Ford administration. 
In contrast, the S&amp;P 500 is down 0.3%, its worst kickoff since the 1970s, while the U.S. dollar has tumbled 7.6%, logging its steepest slide since the Nixon era.
Notably, gold – as tracked by the SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>) – logged its fifth straight month of outperformance versus stocks in April, notching both the longest streak since 2009 and the strongest since 2011.

Hartnett attributed the initial market moves to headline-grabbing developments like artificial intelligence excitement, crypto speculation, NATO tensions and "Liberation Day" trades. 
Yet, these trades are now "unwinding significantly," he said, as attention shifts to potential Trump-era economic policies in the pipeline.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Lower Yields, Weaker Dollar Cushion ‘Soft' Macro Data</h3>
Treasury yields are reflecting expectations of easier monetary policy. The 2-year Treasury yield has fallen 70 basis points since Trump&#8217;s Inauguration Day, oil is down 20%, and the U.S. dollar is weakening. 
These moves, combined with strong capital expenditures in AI — tracking at $320 billion for 2025 — are helping to cushion the blow from deteriorating economic indicators.
Soft macro data is still troubling: GDP forecasts for 2026 have dropped to 1.5% from 2%, oil has plunged 56% since the Russia-Ukraine shock and 17% since "Liberation Day," and consumer sentiment remains weak. 
Yet, Hartnett said as long as the U.S. labor market holds up — with no significant cracks in payrolls — recession fears may be premature.
April employment growth soared by 177,000, according to official statistics released Friday, topping estimates of 130,000.

Asia And Europe Markets Advance; Gold Up On Softer Dollar - Global Markets Today While US Slept

Gold just wrapped up its biggest outperformance versus the U.S. stock market in 14 years, delivering returns dwarfing those from the S&amp;P 500 for <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets">the fifth straight month</a> in April.
The yellow metal&#8217;s 34% rally against the benchmark U.S. share index over the last five months is its largest over such a period since 2011. It&#8217;s also the longest monthly streak of gold outperformance since 2009, as persistent geopolitical risks and economic uncertainties related to President Donald Trump&#8216;s trade tariffs drove investors toward the perceived safety of bullion.
The SPDR Gold Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GLD#NYSE">GLD</a>), the largest gold-backed ETF globally, climbed 5.4% in April. 
In contrast, the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), which tracks the benchmark U.S. equity index, slipped 0.9%. That resulted in a relative outperformance of 6.4% for gold in April alone.
Yet, in the final week of April and the first session of May, gold has given up some ground to equities, prompting traders to question whether this is a mere pullback in a bullish trend or the beginning of a shift in market leadership.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Seasonal Trends Paint A Murky Picture For Gold in May</h3>
Historical data doesn't offer a clear answer. 
Over the past 25 years, gold has recorded gains in May 12 times and losses in 13, with an average return of 0.6% and a median return of -0.3%, as Seasonax data shows. In short, May has been a coin flip for the yellow metal.
June offers little help as well: combining May and June, gold averaged just a 0.2% return and posted gains in only 13 of the past 25 years.
That said, the seasonal tide turns in summer. July sees an average gold return of 0.9%, while August delivers the real momentum, with a 1.9% average gain, its second-best month of the year after January.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">S&amp;P 500 Seasonality Remains Equally Uncertain</h3>
Stocks share a similarly choppy seasonal record in May. Over the past 25 years, the S&amp;P 500 posted positive May returns 15 times, with an average monthly gain of 0.2%. But June tends to be a drag for equities, with an average loss of 0.6%.
July, however, could favor the bulls: the S&amp;P 500 has historically rallied 1.6% on average in that month, making it the second-best performing month behind November.
Post-Election Years: Stocks Historically Had A Slight Edge
Post-election years tend to favor equities over gold. 
Analyzing 97 years of data, the S&amp;P 500 has posted an average gain of 4.8% in the year following a U.S. presidential election, with 14 up years and 10 down years. 
In comparison, gold has shown more modest returns as the bullion advanced by an average of 2.8%, registering gains in just 8 instances versus 6 losses. 
This suggests that, historically, stocks tend to perform better than gold in the early phase of a new presidential term – despite both assets show weaker-than-average annual returns.
