Gold Down Over 1%; Flowers Foods Posts Weak Earnings

Flowers Foods, Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FLO#NYSE">FLO</a>) reported first-quarter adjusted earnings per share of 35 cents, missing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/05/n45464164/flowers-foods-inc-reports-first-quarter-2025-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">the analyst consensus estimate of 38 cents.</a>
Quarterly sales of $1.55 billion (down 1.4% year over year) missed the analyst consensus estimate of $1.60 billion.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 1.6% to&nbsp;$162.0 million, representing 10.4% of net sales, a 30-basis point increase.
The company said it had completed the acquisition of Simple Mills, which contributed&nbsp;$24.3 million&nbsp;in net sales, net loss of&nbsp;$4.2 million,&nbsp;and $3.6 million&nbsp;to adjusted EBITDA.

&#8220;Despite economic uncertainty and greater than expected category declines in the first quarter, Flowers&#8217; performance underscores the importance of our leading brands, each of which maintained or gained unit and dollar share. To mitigate category weakness, we are continuing to invest in on-trend innovation and targeting significant opportunities in faster-growing categories and adjacencies,&#8221; said Ryals McMullian, chairman and CEO of Flowers Foods.
&#8220;Our adjusted 2025 financial guidance reflects our first quarter performance, the challenging consumer environment, and the potential for increased tariff costs.&nbsp;To improve our near-term results, we are gaining additional shelf space, winning new business, and taking other proactive measures while evolving our business to enable long-term&nbsp;outperformance,&#8221; McMullian added.&nbsp;
Net income decreased 27.4% to&nbsp;$53.0 million, representing 3.4% of sales, a 120-basis point decrease year over year.
Outlook: Flowers Foods lowered its FY2025 GAAP EPS guidance to $0.95 to $1.05, below the $1.16 consensus estimate.
The company also cut its sales outlook to $5.30 billion to $5.39 billion from the prior $5.40 billion to $5.49 billion range, compared with the $5.41 billion estimate.
Flowers Foods cut its FY2025 adjusted EPS guidance to $1.05 to $1.15 from $1.18 to $1.28, compared with the $1.16 estimate.
It also lowered sales guidance, excluding the Simple Mills acquisition, to $5.08 billion to $5.17 billion from $5.18 billion to $5.26 billion, compared with the $5.41 billion estimate.

Flowers Foods Cuts Annual Outlook As Tariffs Bite Into Profit

U.S. stock futures advanced on Friday after a mixed close on Thursday. Futures of major benchmark indices were trading higher in premarket.
The S&amp;P 500 index recorded its fourth day of gains on Thursday after turning positive for the year at the beginning of the week.
Jerome Powell, Federal Reserve Chair, indicated Thursday that the Fed is r<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/05/45439079/powell-signals-fed-may-shift-its-inflation-strategy-after-5-year-economic-shake-up">eassessing its inflation and employment strategies</a>, suggesting potential shifts in policy following a comprehensive review scheduled for 2025. 
"Participants have indicated that they thought it would be appropriate to reconsider the language around [labor market] shortfalls," Powell said, referring to how the Fed talks about employment in its official strategy.
Nasdaq dropped after continued positive momentum from <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45462404/trump-unveils-over-200-billion-worth-of-deals-with-uae-including-major-etihad-airways-commitment">partnerships with the Middle East</a> during the U.S.-Saudi Investment Forum. 
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury bond yielded 4.40% and the two-year bond was at 3.95%. The CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>&#8216;s projections show markets pricing a 91.8% likelihood of the Federal Reserve keeping the current interest rates unchanged in its June meeting.

The SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>) and Invesco QQQ Trust ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), which track the S&amp;P 500 index and Nasdaq 100 index, respectively, rose in premarket on Friday. The SPY was up 0.14% to $591.31, while the QQQ advanced 0.16% to $520.06, according to <a href="https://pro.benzinga.com/dashboard">Benzinga Pro</a> data.
Cues From Last Session:
Led by strong gains in utilities, consumer staples, and real estate, most sectors within the S&amp;P 500 finished Thursday in positive territory, contributing to the index&#8217;s fourth consecutive session of gains.
However, consumer discretionary and communication services stocks diverged from the broader market, ending the day lower.
Overall, the S&amp;P 500 has climbed approximately 4.5% week-to-date, followed by a roughly 2.6% increase for the Dow and a significant 6.6% rise for the Nasdaq.
Notably, tech giants like Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NVDA#NASDAQ">NVDA</a>) and Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) have seen substantial weekly gains of around 15% each, with Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOG#NASDAQ">GOOG</a>) (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) also adding around 6% and 7%, respectively.

(NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FL#NYSE">FL</a>) shares surged around 86% following an agreement for acquisition by DICK&#8217;s Sporting Goods Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DKS#NYSE">DKS</a>).
On the economic front, initial jobless claims remained steady, U.S. retail sales saw a modest 0.1% monthly increase in April, and U.S. producer prices unexpectedly declined by 0.5% in April.
The Dow Jones index advanced 272 points or 0.65% to 42,322.75, whereas the S&amp;P 500 index rose 0.41% to 5,916.93. Nasdaq Composite ended 0.18% lower at 19,112.32, and the small-cap gauge, Russell 2000, ended 0.52% higher at 2,094.69.

Insights From Analysts:
Ed Yardeni of Yardeni Research said in his QuickTakes note that Fed Chair Powell &#8220;poked a stick&#8221; at the White House following his speech on Thursday.
Yardeni pointed out that Powell implied that the bond yields might stay elevated as a result of more frequent &#8220;supply shocks,&#8221; like tariffs.
&#8220;Higher real rates may also reflect the possibility that inflation could be more volatile going forward than in the inter-crisis period of the 2010s,&#8221; Powell said in prepared remarks for the Thomas Laubach Research Conference in Washington, D.C.
Yardeni said, &#8220;Sounds like Powell is expecting more frequent bouts of stagflation, which was associated with supply shocks in the past.&#8221;
&#8220;The stock and bond markets didn&#8217;t react much to the speech partly because today&#8217;s batch of indicators were mostly ambiguous about the near-term prospects for stagflation,&#8221; he added.
As the PPI declined in April, Louis Navellier of Navellier &amp; Associates said, &#8220;The PPI demonstrated that despite recent trade chaos, wholesale prices are falling from lackluster economic activity and surplus goods that have been &#8216;dumped&#8217; in the U.S.&#8221;
Meanwhile, commenting on the declining PPI, Jamie Cox, the managing partner at Harris Financial Group, added, &#8220;If you are in the stagflation camp, these data aren't confirming your thesis. While growth is slowing, disinflation remains intact.&#8221;
Speaking about the S&amp;P 500 earnings so far, Navellier said, &#8220;Now that 90% of the companies in the S&amp;P 500 have announced their first quarter results, earnings are running at an 11.2% annual pace, which represents the seventh straight quarter of improving earnings growth.&#8221;

Flower Foods shares are trading higher. The stock may be moving on continued strength after reporting on Friday better-than-expected Q4 adjusted EPS results and FY25 issued revenue guidance above estimates.

Wall Street slumped into negative territory late in the week as renewed fears over inflation and trade <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">tariffs eroded risk appetite. </a>
The first warning sign came from the University of Michigan's consumer sentiment survey, which revealed an "unusually large" spike in inflation expectations. The one-year inflation outlook surged by a full percentage point to 4.3%, marking its highest <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/02/43564020/consumer-sentiment-sinks-economist-flags-unusually-large-rise-in-inflation-perception">level since November 2023. </a>
Investor uncertainty grew following President Donald Trump's announcement that &#8216;reciprocal tariffs&#8217; would take effect next week. Trump is expected to sign new executive orders at 2:00 p.m. Friday.
On the macro front, February&#8217;s jobs report revealed a mixed outcome, with employment growth slowing down more than expected, yet unemployment fell more than expected, and wages surged more than expected.
Market reaction was swift. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.6%, erasing its weekly gains, while the Nasdaq 100 dropped 0.9% by 1:00 p.m. trading in New York. 
The Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped into negative territory for the week, putting its three-week winning streak at risk. Small-cap stocks underperformed, with the Russell 2000 sinking 1.3%. 
Stock-wise, Uber Technologies Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UBER#NASDAQ">UBER</a>) skyrocketed by 9.5%, extending its 8.6% rally from the previous session, after hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman revealed a stake of 30.3 million shares in the ride-hailing giant.
In currency and bond markets, the U.S. dollar index – tracked by the Invesco DB USD Index Bullish Fund ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/UUP#NYSE">UUP</a>) – rallied following the tariff headlines, while Treasury yields climbed higher. The iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) dropped 0.8%, reflecting renewed pressure on long-duration bonds. 
Gold took a breather, retreating under pressure from a stronger dollar. Meanwhile, Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) erased early session gains, slipping from an intraday high of $100,000 to $97,500.

Wall Street Drops On Tariffs Threat, Dollar Rises, Uber Rockets On Ackman's Tweet: What's Driving Markets Friday?

Flowers Foods Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/FLO#NYSE">FLO</a>) reported a fourth-quarter sales decline of 1.6% year-on-year to $1.11 billion, missing the analyst <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/02/n43556480/flowers-foods-inc-reports-fourth-quarter-and-full-year-2024-results" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus estimate of $1.13 billion</a>.
Adjusted EPS of $0.22 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">beat the analyst consensus estimate of $0.21.</a>
Materials, supplies, labor, and other production costs were&nbsp;51.2%&nbsp;of net sales, a 90-basis point decrease.
Operating income for the quarter increased 22.9% to $61.4 million and the operating margin expanded 110 basis points to 5.5%.
Adjusted EBITDA increased 6.3% to&nbsp;$102.4 million with the margin expanding to 9.2%. Operating cash flow for the quarter totaled $130.3 million.
&#8220;Flowers&#8217; strong execution of our portfolio strategy and cost savings initiatives drove fourth quarter and full year 2024 adjusted EPS growth in a difficult economic environment,&#8221; said chairman and CEO Ryals McMullian.
&#8220;We expect continued strong execution as we navigate a difficult economic environment in 2025. First-half results are expected to benefit from the carryover of new business wins and savings and pricing initiatives, as well as moderating commodity costs.&#8221;
The company held $5.0 billion in cash and equivalents as of December 28, 2024.
Outlook: For FY25, Flowers expects revenue of $5.403 billion to $5.487 billion <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/guidance">versus the estimate of $5.22 billion.</a>
The company sees adjusted EPS of $1.11 to $1.24 against the consensus of $1.30. Capital expenditures are expected to be $140 million to $150 million.
Price Action: FLO shares are trading higher by 2.12% at $19.75 in premarket at the last check Friday.
