What Happened: The issue stems from a potential defect in the front control arm of the pickup truck's suspension, which could increase the risk of a crash, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a report released on May 27.
"The front upper control arm ball joint nut may not have been tightened properly, allowing the front upper control arm to detach from the knuckle assembly," the NHTSA report said.
The affected products include F150 Lightning Pickups sold from 2024-2025, the report said. "Dealers will inspect the upper control arm ball joint nut, and replace the nut and/or knuckle assembly, as necessary, free of charge," NHTSA reiterated in its report.

The concern arises from a provision in a House-passed tax reform bill that would bar tax credits for EV batteries made with components from certain Chinese companies or produced under their licenses. Ford stated that the company made its investment based on current policy and argued it's unfair for the government to change incentives after significant capital has already been deployed.
In addition to threatening Ford's plant-specific tax credits, the bill would repeal the $7,500 consumer tax credit for new EV purchases, introduce a $250 annual EV fee to fund road repairs, and reverse vehicle emissions rules aimed at encouraging EV production. These changes could weaken the broader U.S. EV market, further impacting Ford's long-term electrification strategy.
Meanwhile, broader pressure on automakers intensified on Monday after President Donald Trump on Friday stated that all vehicles and parts must be built entirely in the U.S. going forward, according to a separate report from Reuters. 
The Trump administration slapped a 25% tariff on imported vehicles and parts earlier this year, further complicating global supply chains for companies like Ford. Trump also <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114599330494282325" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> Friday that he would double steel and aluminum tariffs from 25% to 50%, which may be adding to concerns for automakers.

Consumer Tech News (May 19-May 23): Trump Warns Apple Of 25% Tariff if Manufactured Overseas, Disney Sues YouTube & More

General Motors Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GM#NYSE">GM</a>) is steadily gaining on Tesla Inc.'s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) lead in the U.S. domestic EV market, despite the Trump administration's automotive tariffs.
What Happened: GM accounted for over 14.4% of all new EVs sold in the U.S. in April 2025, data released by Cox Automotive <a href="https://www.coxautoinc.com/market-insights/ev-market-monitor-april-2025/">on</a> Wednesday shows. The Detroit-based automaker is currently the second-largest EV manufacturer by units sold through Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac after it surpassed Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/F#NYSE">F</a>).
Amid GM's sales growth, Elon Musk's Tesla still claimed the top spot in April with sales climbing 3.7%, driven by the Model Y, which sold 25,321 units, the report suggested. However, its market share remained below 50%.
Why It Matters: The data comes in as EV sales have experienced a decline in the U.S. The automaker has reportedly pushed back against<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45488137/general-motors-wants-to-overturn-californias-aggressive-ev-mandate-as-demand-slows-in-the-us-report"> California's EV policy</a>, which aims to phase out ICE vehicles by 2035.
"Emissions standards that are not aligned with market realities pose a serious threat to our business by undermining consumer choice and vehicle affordability," GM said in an email sent out to employees.
The automaker also <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/guidance/25/05/45133096/this-is-how-much-it-will-cost-general-motors-from-trumps-tariff-policy">pulled its earnings guidance </a>for 2025, citing uncertainties posed by U.S. President Donald Trump's automotive tariffs. Elsewhere in the EV sector, GM's fellow Detroit-based automaker, Ford, has reportedly decided to split its flagship Kentucky battery manufacturing facility with Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. (OTCPK: NSANY).
