The world of crypto has weathered many storms over the years ; exchange thefts, market collapses, government shutdowns, and myriad predictions of the end of days for it., but there&#8217;s a new threat emerging on the horizon that potentially could destroy at its core the very nature of digital assets we now hold dear: quantum computing.
This is no distant science fiction scenario anymore; it&#8217;s a rapidly evolving reality that demands our immediate attention. For years, quantum computing has been science fiction, Star Trek-style, theoretical and way, way off on the horizon, never to be practical. That&#8217;s changing fast. The giant technology companies like IBM, Google, and Amazon are investing billions of dollars into quantum research, and the breakthroughs have been advancing at a rate that&#8217;s becoming really alarming. What&#8217;s so troubling for cryptocurrency investors is that quantum computers don&#8217;t simply provide incremental gains over traditional computers; they offer an entirely different paradigm for computing that could make our existing security precautions obsolete overnight. The tech is accelerating. The crux of the matter is that cryptocurrencies protect our money.
Every Bitcoin transfer, every Ethereum smart contract, every virtual purse is secured by cryptographic routines that are basically impenetrable to hackers using computers now. These mathematical problems would take classical computers millennia to crack, effectively rendering them impossible to solve.
Quantum computers, however, operate on entirely different principles, using quantum bits that exist in many states simultaneously. Quantum parallelism allows them to test millions of solutions simultaneously, potentially cracking these &#8220;impossible&#8221; cryptographic problems in hours or days instead of millennia. Think about what that means for your Bitcoin wallet. Your private key is now being protected by cryptographic methods that would take conventional computers longer than the universe has currently existed. But an enormous enough quantum computer could possibly break through that protection in hours. It&#8217;s not just Bitcoin, though ,Ethereum, Litecoin, and basically all other cryptocurrencies are built atop similar cryptographic concepts that are potentially vulnerable to quantum attacks. The better news is that the cryptocurrency world is not idly standing by. Ethereum co-founder Joe Lubin has been vocal and adamant about the necessity of quantum-resistant infrastructure, and has had ongoing conversations with sovereign wealth funds and large financial institutions regarding deploying quantum-resilient systems across the Ethereum platform. Wallet providers, whether they be hardware companies like Ledger and Trezor, or software companies building mobile and desktop applications need to be made aware by their users that quantum-resistant cryptography matters. I have a Ledger Nano X wallet and am now corresponding with them to inquire about what developments that they are focused on. Too many of the providers are playing a game of &#8220;wait and see,&#8221; thinking they&#8217;ll have sufficient time to incorporate quantum-resistant protocols once the threat is closer. The reality is that progress in quantum computing isn&#8217;t on a schedule. It could accelerate.
Advances could come quickly, and by the time a quantum computer ready to crack today&#8217;s cryptography defenses is about to be announced, it could already be too late to implement protective technologies. The crypto community learned this the hard way with many security vulnerabilities being exploited prior to patches being available. For individual investors, there are some things you can do today to reduce your quantum risk, but they do not remove the risk completely. Never reusing addresses is critical. Every address on a Bitcoin only needs to be used once because reused addresses expose more cryptographic information that could be hypothetically attacked by quantum algorithms. Maintaining wallet firmware updated guarantees you the most up-to-date security patches and enhancements. Having decentralized swap protocols over centralized exchanges cuts the number of possible attack vectors, although this is more a matter of overall security hygiene rather than quantum-specific defense. The window of opportunity for being prepared ahead of time is closing. Scientists estimate that the introduction of quantum computers to crack existing encryption measures will occur between a five to ten year period, but with some estimates placing it sooner if breakthroughs accelerate innovation. Unlike other technological changes, however, this one will offer no gradual transition period. The shift from quantum-vulnerable to quantum-resistant will need to take place rapidly once practical quantum computers emerge. The crypto sphere has always been convinced of being on the cutting edge and technologically smart. Now it is time to live up to that reputation by demanding quantum-safe technology when it is not absolutely necessary yet. Security for the future of digital assets is what we do today.

Comparable sales rose 5%, with stores up 5% and e-commerce up 7%. On a constant currency basis, Schuh sales rose 1%.
The first quarter&#8217;s gross margin fell to 46.7% from 47.6% a year ago, mainly due to brand mix shifts at Journeys and Schuh, promotions at Schuh, and lower margins from product liquidations at Genesco Brands.
Genesco reported a GAAP operating loss of $28.1 million, or 5.9% of sales, down from $32.1 million, or 7%, a year ago. On an adjusted basis, the loss narrowed to $27.9 million from $30.0 million, with the operating margin improving to a loss of 5.9% of sales from a loss of 6.5% in the first quarter last year.
As of May 3, 2025, Genesco held $21.7 million in cash, up from $19.2 million a year earlier. Total debt rose to $121 million from $59.4 million, mainly due to a 15% inventory increase to support higher demand at Journeys.
Genesco repurchased 604,531 shares for $12.6 million, or $20.79 per share, during the quarter. Under its expanded buyback program, announced in June 2023, it has $29.8 million remaining.
In the first quarter, capital expenditures totaled $19 million, mainly for retail stores and other projects. The company opened four new stores and closed 26, ending the quarter with 1,256 stores. This represents a 5% decrease from 1,321 stores at the end of the first quarter last year. Overall square footage also decreased by 3% year-over-year.

&#8220;Today, we are reiterating our full-year adjusted EPS guidance of $1.30 to $1.70, incorporating the impact of current tariffs. Although there is ongoing external market uncertainty, we know our businesses are strong, and we are making investments in product, stores, and marketing across all brands to drive growth,&#8221; commented Sandra Harris, Genesco&#8217;s Senior VP of Finance and CFO.
For fiscal 2026, Genesco reaffirmed its expectation of adjusted diluted EPS between $1.30 and $1.70 versus the consensus estimate of $1.47, factoring in current tariffs.
Total sales are now projected to rise 1%–2%, up from prior guidance of flat to 1%, due to favorable foreign exchange. Comparable sales range outlook narrowed to up 2% to 3% versus the prior range of up 2% to 4%, with no additional share buybacks assumed and a 29% tax rate.
Price Action: GCO shares are trading higher by 1.39% to $22.66 at last check Wednesday.

Genesco Acknowledges 'More Pronounced' Tariff Impact, Stands By Guidance

Bitcoin's (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) volatility is well known, but Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan argues that when viewed within the context of a broader portfolio, the asset may improve performance without <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cryptocurrency/24/11/42170334/bitcoin-investor-turns-daily-30-purchases-into-1-million-portfolio-in-7-years-10-months-and-12-days">proportionately increasing risk</a>.
In a note <a href="https://experts.bitwiseinvestments.com/cio-memos/more-return-with-less-risk">published</a> by Bitwise Asset Management on June 3, Hougan questions the conventional practice of evaluating Bitcoin in isolation.
"When you think about adding Bitcoin to a portfolio, don't do it in isolation. Think about it in the context of your entire risk budget," he wrote.
Hougan examined several hypothetical portfolio allocations from 2017 to 2024, comparing traditional 60/40 stock-bond splits with variations that include Bitcoin. 
While a 5% allocation to Bitcoin significantly increased returns, from 107% to 207%, the overall portfolio volatility, measured by standard deviation, increased only modestly from 11.3% to 12.5%.
This risk-return profile, Hougan said, shows that "adding Bitcoin to portfolios has historically boosted returns without significantly increasing risk," citing Bitcoin&#8217;s low correlation to both equities and fixed income.
But Hougan proposes that a more effective method may involve adjusting other portfolio components to compensate for Bitcoin's risk. 
In one model, Hougan explores a portfolio that adds 5% Bitcoin while simultaneously increasing bond exposure and tilting it toward short-duration Treasuries.

This combination, referred to as Portfolio 3, outperformed the traditional allocation and even matched the return of the Bitcoin-enhanced portfolio, with lower risk.
The analysis goes further with a Portfolio 4, which drops equity exposure to 40%, increases bonds to 50%, and allocates 10% to Bitcoin. 
This configuration delivered higher returns with less volatility than portfolios with more equity risk and less crypto exposure.
"Portfolio 3 generated higher returns than Portfolio 1 and roughly the same returns as Portfolio 2 with less risk than either," Hougan noted. 
The suggestion is not prescriptive, but rather a prompt for investors to rethink how they fit Bitcoin within their broader financial strategy.
Hougan acknowledged the outsized returns of Bitcoin in earlier years may not repeat, cautioning, "Of course, there's no guarantee this will persist in the future." However, he insists that rethinking the allocation method is critical: "It makes you wonder: What if you push this further?"
The analysis is rooted in data from Bloomberg, covering a range of traditional and crypto assets from January 2017 through December 2024, and does not account for taxes or transaction fees.
