Disney Loses Legal Battle To Block Executive Justin Connolly's Move To Rival YouTube

About 3% of NHL players today were five years old or older and likely able to remember a Canadian team winning the cup.

History shows that Canadian teams still rank among the all-time best in NHL and Stanley Cup history. The Canadiens rank first with 23 Stanley Cup wins. Warner Bros Discovery Shareholders Reject CEO David Zaslav's $51.9 Million Pay Package Amid Stock Slump, Debt Downgrade

Nearly 80% of S&amp;P 500 companies exceeded earnings forecasts in the first quarter of 2025, helping the index post a 13.3% profit surge — its second straight quarter <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/earnings">of double-digit growth.</a>
According to the latest Earnings Insight report from FactSet, authored by vice president and senior earnings analyst John Butters, only 18% fell short of analyst forecasts.
About 98% of S&amp;P 500 companies now have reported first-quarter results. And up to 78% beat earnings-per-share (EPS) expectations—a figure that outpaces both the 5-year average of 77% and the 10-year average of 75%. 
&#8220;In aggregate, companies are reporting earnings that are 8.2% above expectations. This surprise percentage is above the 1-year average (+6.1%), below the 5-year average (+8.8%), and above the 10-year average (+6.9%),&#8221; Butters wrote.

Health Care topped the leaderboard with 92% of its constituents beating estimates, followed by Communication Services (87%) and Information Technology (86%). 
At the opposite end, Utilities and Energy sectors posted the weakest beat rates at 61% and 64%, respectively.
Communication Services delivered the strongest upside surprises, boasting an average earnings surprise of +23.8%. 
Meta Platforms Inc. beat by over $1 per share ($6.43 vs. $5.23), while Alphabet Inc. posted EPS of $2.81 against estimates of $2.02. 
Other strong performers included Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EA#NASDAQ">EA</a>), Interpublic Group of Companies Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IPG#NYSE">IPG</a>), News Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NWSA#NASDAQ">NWSA</a>), and Walt Disney Co. Consumer Discretionary followed with a 9.4% surprise rate. Booking Holdings Inc. Health Care delivered an 8.6% surprise, with Pfizer Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PFE#NYSE">PFE</a>) earning $0.92 per share vs. $0.67 estimate, and CVS Health Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVS#NYSE">CVS</a>) reporting $2.25 vs. $1.70. The sector also had the highest beat rate, with 92% of companies exceeding EPS forecasts.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Market Response: Positive Earnings Are Paying Off</h3>
Investors rewarded strong results. Companies that beat expectations saw their stock prices rise by an average of 1.9% from two days before to two days after earnings — the highest average gain since the third quarter of 2022. 
Conversely, companies that missed expectations saw a more muted decline of -1.9%, smaller than the 5-year average drop of -2.3%.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Valuations Are Getting Stretched</h3>
The forward 12-month price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio for the S&amp;P 500 rose to 21.3, above the 5-year average of 19.9 and the 10-year average of 18.4. 
That increase reflects a 5.4% rise in the index since March 31, while forward EPS estimates have slipped less than 0.1%.
By sector, Consumer Discretionary (28.1) and Information Technology (27.2) have the richest valuations, while Energy (14.6) trades at the lowest. 
The trailing 12-month P/E ratio also moved higher to 25.9, above the historical 5- and 10-year norms.

S&P 500 Q1 Earnings Stun Wall Street Again With Broad-Based Beats, Double-Digit Growth

An analyst said in a new investor note that media giant The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) could see its shares go higher due to its strength in <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45251203/disney-rides-strong-subscriber-growth-and-movie-hits-lifts-forecast-with-1-billion-streaming-goal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">theme parks and streaming</a>.
The Disney Analyst: Rosenblatt analyst Barton Crockett maintained a Buy rating on Disney stock while raising the price target from $135 to $140.

The Analyst Takeaways: Crockett said <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/sports/25/05/45424674/espn-to-launch-ultimate-sports-destination-streaming-app-in-fall-why-analyst-says-disney-can-have-a-direct-relationship-with-their-viewers">theme parks and streaming</a> could be keys to Disney stock going higher, while looking at other strong company sectors like experiences, advertising, ESPN and movies.
"So much is strong right now, that if we avoid a recession we believe estimates can move up, and the multiple, too," Crockett said.
The analyst said concerns that Epic Universe could slow down Disney theme park traffic in Florida have been minimized. Crowds have been "muted" at Epic since the May 22 opening, and Disney has indicated that bookings for Walt Disney World are up year over year.
Crockett said Walt Disney World bookings were up 4% year-over-year for the third quarter and up 7% year-over-year for the fourth quarter, based on Disney's commentary from the second quarter earnings call. The analyst also highlights the company's cruise ship segment, which is adding more ships and revenue opportunities later this year.
Crockett said theme park spending will likely expand as long as the country avoids a recession.
"Our expectation is that Trump will focus on winning 2026 midterms, and stop tariff policy actions short of clearly sparking a recession."
For Disney's sports segment, Crockett sees NBA Playoff viewership as strong along with strong early WNBA viewership that could help the company's ESPN segment and advertising revenue.
The analyst assumes Disney's ESPN Unlimited streaming platform will debut for $30 a month before the football season. Crockett said the key will be to try to up-sell the 24.1 million ESPN+ subscribers who are paying $12 a month for the new service. The analyst predicts two million subscribers for ESPN Unlimited in the first year and three million subscribers in the second year.
Crockett highlights Disney's streaming strength with subscription prices increasing and advertising opportunities increasing. The analyst predicts Disney's DTC operating income "can go parabolic," with a prediction of going from $143 million in fiscal 2024 to over $1.1 billion in fiscal 2025 and over $2.2 billion in fiscal 2026.
"Disney is the most advanced of media conglomerates in transitioning its TV audiences to streaming."
Crockett said theme parks, streaming and movie success can help offset any concerns about the company's linear networks.
DIS Price Action: Disney stock is up 1.3% to $114.50 on Tuesday versus a 52-week trading range of $80.10 to $118.63. Disney stock is up 2.8% year-to-date in 2025.

Netflix dominated the list with five of the top 10. The streaming giant also had numbers 11, 12, 13, 14 and 15 on the list giving it 10 of the top 15. Overall, Netflix had 12 of the top 25 series.
Paramount ranked second with three of the top 10. The company also had 16, 17 and 21 on the list, good for six of the top 25 series.
Outside of these two, Walt Disney Co (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIS#NYSE">DIS</a>) had "High Potential" at fifth place. The series had split viewership between ABC and Hulu, according to the report.
Prime Video from Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AMZN#NASDAQ">AMZN</a>) had the fourth most-watched title in "Reacher." This was the only top 25 title for Amazon with its next best ranked 42nd and other hits like "Beast Games" ranking 73rd on the list, with only viewers available from streaming and not multiple platforms.

Why It's Important: The rankings also show average viewership for the key age 18 to 49 demographic, which shows an even larger dominance from Netflix.
Netflix had six of the top 10 series for the 18 to 49 age demographic with "Squid Game," "Adolescence," "Monsters," "Nobody Wants This," "Running Point" and "Ms. Rachel." The streaming giant had 17 of the top 25 shows for viewership in this key age demographic.
For Paramount, the results were much different as the company only had one title rank in the top 10 for the key age demographic with "Landman." Unlike other series that air on CBS and stream on Paramount+, "Landman" is a streaming exclusive title.
Paramount's next highest title on the 18 to 49 chart is "Mobland" at 30.
This means Paramount is getting much higher viewership from its broadcast segment (CBS) than from its streaming. It also shows the balance of the company having a strong network and streaming platform with positions on both top 10 lists. This also illustrates Paramount is one of the winners in having series that appeal to all ages, including the 50+ demographic.

Beginning June 2, Hulu will debut its first-ever suite of offerings, complementing the Disney+ Perks program.
Disney stock is up over 10% in the last 12 months versus Netflix Inc&#8217;s (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/NFLX#NASDAQ">NFLX</a>) 83%, signifying Disney&#8217;s attempts to grow its subscriber base amid intense streaming rivalry.
JioHotstar, the newly merged streaming platform from&nbsp;Walt Disney, has added 230 million subscribers <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45604822/disney-and-ambanis-jiohotstar-adds-230-million-subscribers-in-3-months-nears-netflixs-global-total-driven-by-crickets-unmatched-pull-in-india" rel="noreferrer noopener">in just three months</a>, bringing its total to 280 million, nearly matching&nbsp;Netflix&#8217;s 300 million global users.
Walt Disney reported&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45251203/disney-rides-strong-subscriber-growth-and-movie-hits-lifts-forecast-with-1-billion-streaming-goal" rel="noreferrer noopener">fiscal second-quarter</a> 2025 revenue growth of 7% year-on-year to $23.62 billion, beating the&nbsp;analyst consensus of $23.14 billion driven by its Entertainment and Experiences businesses. Adjusted EPS of $1.45 beat the&nbsp;analyst consensus of $1.20.
Disney ended the quarter with 180.7 million Disney+ Core and Hulu subscriptions, up by 2.5 million over the prior quarter. The company reported 126.0 million Disney+ Core paid subscribers, an increase of 1.4 million over the preceding quarter.
For fiscal 2025, Disney projected an adjusted EPS&nbsp;of $5.75, an increase of 16% over fiscal 2024 versus a $5.44 analyst estimate (compared to the prior estimate of high-single-digit&nbsp;growth).
For the fiscal third quarter, Disney projected a modest increase in Disney+ subscribers compared to the second quarter of fiscal 2025 for the Entertainment Direct-to-Consumer segment.
Price Action: DIS stock is trading lower by 0.30% to $111.68 premarket at last check Friday.
