German stocks are crushing Wall Street this year, recording their strongest outperformance against U.S. equities since 1999 — a market dynamic that last emerged just before the infamous burst of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/money/stocks-to-buy-now">the dot-com bubble.</a>
Through June 20, Germany's DAX Index has climbed 17.5% year-to-date, while the Vanguard S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VOO#NYSE">VOO</a>) has gained only 1.9%. 
The six-month performance spread between the two benchmarks now stands at nearly 16 percentage points — the highest gap since the second half of 1999.
Currency effects further amplified the gains. The iShares MSCI Germany Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWG#NYSE">EWG</a>) – a U.S.-listed ETF tracking German equities and adjusting for exchange rate moves — has soared 28% year-to-date, as the U.S. dollar weakened 10% against the euro.

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why Are German Stocks Outperforming?</h3>
A mix of aggressive fiscal expansion, monetary easing, and global investor rotation has put Germany at the center of a rare equity resurgence.
In March 2025, Germany's Parliament approved a constitutional amendment that exempts military and infrastructure spending from the country's strict "debt brake" law. 
This legal shift enabled the government to create a massive €500 billion ($565 billion) infrastructure fund, aimed at financing green energy, digitalization, and regional development through 2035 — all off-budget to bypass constitutional debt limits.
Additionally, Germany committed to raising defense spending well beyond 3% of GDP — aligning with NATO&#8217;s Readiness 2030 and the broader €800 billion ($900 billion) ReArm Europe plan. This military push has sparked investor enthusiasm in defense stocks and industrial suppliers.
At the same time, the European Central Bank has aggressively cut rates by a cumulative 75 basis points during the first half of 2025, bringing the deposit rate down to 2% in June, amid cooling inflation.
Meanwhile, the U.S. market has faced headwinds. President Donald Trump's aggressive tariff push fueled trade uncertainty and triggered a first-quarter GDP contraction, as businesses rushed to import goods ahead of higher duties set for April.
The Federal Reserve has kept interest rates unchanged in a 4.25%-4.50% range, despite declining inflation.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Rheinmetall Leads The Charge</h3>
A handful of key outperformers have driven Germany's stock rally.
Defense heavyweight Rheinmetall AG (OTCPK: RNMBF) is up a staggering 181% year-to-date, contributing 356 basis points to the DAX's total year-to-date return. 
Other top gainers include Siemens Energy AG (OTCPK: SMEGF), up 71.7%, Commerzbank AG (OTCPK: CRZBY), up 83%, and Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>), which has gained 47%, each providing significant contributions to index performance.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">History Echoes 1999?</h3>
The last time German stocks outpaced their U.S. counterparts this sharply was in late 1999. Then, too, global investors rotated into European equities amid optimism about reforms and tech-driven growth. 
Yet that outperformance came at the height of global market euphoria: the S&amp;P 500 peaked at 1,550 in March 2000, then plunged 45% over the following three years. 
Whether 2025's surge ends in sustained growth or a speculative overshoot remains to be seen. 
But for now, Germany is among the leaders in global equity markets — and echoing the late 1990s in ways that seasoned investors may not want to forget.

Shares of Us-listed European stocks are trading lower after President Trump recommended a 50% straight tariff on the European Union, staring Jun. 1.

President Donald Trump&#8217;s threat to impose a sweeping 50% tariff on all European Union imports starting June 1 sparked a broad selloff across European markets Friday, triggering fears of a transatlantic trade war just as global <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">growth faces renewed pressure.</a>
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the EU&#8217;s "powerful Trade Barriers, VAT Taxes, ridiculous Corporate Penalties, Non-Monetary Trade Barriers, Monetary Manipulations, unfair and unjustified lawsuits against American Companies" were to blame for an annual trade deficit exceeding $250 billion, which he called "totally unacceptable."
The proposed tariff would exempt goods manufactured in the United States, potentially creating sharp distortions for EU-based exporters and global supply chains.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">European Benchmarks Tumble</h3>
The fallout was immediate in markets. The Euro STOXX 50 index – as closely tracked by the iShares MSCI Eurozone ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EZU#NYSE">EZU</a>) – dropped 3%, Italy's FTSE MIB sank 2.9%, France's CAC 40 lost 2.6% and Spain's IBEX 35 fell 2.2%. 
Germany's DAX, as tracked by the iShares MSCI Germany Index Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/EWG#NYSE">EWG</a>), which is home to many export-heavy firms, slid 2.3%.
Financial stocks bore the brunt of the decline, with Deutsche Bank AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>) falling 6.1%, Société Générale SA (OTCPK: SCGLY) down 5.3% and Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria SA (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BBVA#NYSE">BBVA</a>) sliding 5%.
 Industrial and luxury exporters also came under heavy pressure, including Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (OTCPK: BMWYY), or BMW (−4.5%), UniCredit SpA (OTCPK: UNCRY) (−4.5%) and EssilorLuxottica SA (OTCPK: ESLOY) (−4.2%).
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Export Exposure To US Trade Is Key</h3>
The tariff threat has placed a spotlight on European companies heavily reliant on U.S. revenues.
In Germany, Adidas AG (OTCPK: ADDYY) derives roughly a third of its revenue from the United States, while SAP SE (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SAP#NYSE">SAP</a>) generates about 40% of its turnover from North America. 
Chipmaker Infineon Technologies AG (OTCPK: IFNNY) is also significantly exposed due to its automotive and electronics customers.
French luxury and tech firms are equally at risk. LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton SE (OTCPK: LVMUY) earns close to 25% of its revenue in the U.S., while Dassault Systèmes SE (OTCPK: DASTY) has a strong footprint in North American enterprise software. Hermès International SA (OTCPK: HESAY) pulls about 20-25% of its sales from the American market.
Italian brands like Ferrari NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RACE#NYSE">RACE</a>), with over 30% of sales from the U.S., and EssilorLuxottica SA (OTCPK: ESLOY), which owns Oakley and Ray-Ban, are also vulnerable. 
In the Netherlands, tech heavyweight ASML Holding NV (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/ASML#NASDAQ">ASML</a>) earns about 20-25% of revenue from the U.S., and Koninklijke Philips NV (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PHG#NYSE">PHG</a>) maintains a major healthcare business across North America.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">EU Retaliation Risk Grows For US Stocks</h3>
For U.S. corporations with heavy exposure to Europe—particularly in tech, autos, agriculture and aviation—the economic consequences could be significant if the European Union responds in kind.
The 2018 EU countermeasures to Trump&#8217;s steel tariffs included duties on motorcycles, bourbon and orange juice—strategic hits on U.S. swing-state exports.
EU officials may also revisit tech taxation disputes, where U.S. firms like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/AAPL#NASDAQ">AAPL</a>), Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/GOOGL#NASDAQ">GOOGL</a>) and Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/MSFT#NASDAQ">MSFT</a>) are already under regulatory scrutiny.

On Tuesday, in a post on X, investor and economist Peter Schiff highlighted U.S. 10-Year Treasury yields climbing back to 4.5%, despite the &#8220;trade truce&#8221; with China early this week, while the U.S. dollar &#8220;resumes its broad-based decline.&#8221;
What Happened: &#8220;Despite the trade truce, the world is losing confidence in the dollar and our ability to get our fiscal house in order,&#8221; Schiff said, highlighting structural issues, rather than short-term diplomacy, as driving factors behind recent market behaviors.
Schiff says, &#8220;The consequences of de-dollarization will be profound,&#8221; referring to a potential pivot by foreign central banks and investors away from U.S. debt and currency reserves in recent weeks, leading to high borrowing costs for the U.S. Government.

10-Year U.S. Treasury Yield hit its highest level in a month at 4.45% on Tuesday, up from 4.17% at the beginning of this month, and 3.99% at the beginning of April. This comes as markets continue to assess the impact of the trade de-escalation with China this week, according to TradingEconomics.
The U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) is flat during the day, trading at 100.95, up 0.001%, while being up 0.72% for the month. The currency witnessed a pullback following a sharp rally on Monday, mainly owing to the soft inflation data, which hints at a rate cut by the Federal Reserve, according to Reuters.

Why It Matters: Other analysts and economists have expressed similar concerns. Macro researcher Stephanie Pomboy described Monday's market rally as a &#8220;headline sugar rush&#8221; fueled by tariff optimism, warning that &#8220;the market's partying on tariffs, but the foundation is cracking&#8221; amid <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/05/45369770/whos-going-to-buy-2-trillion-worth-of-paper-macro-expert-calls-wall-street-rally-a-headline-sugar-rush-as-treasury-yield-spike-signals-bigger-trouble">rising Treasury yields</a>.
Last week,&nbsp;Michael Hartnett, a Chief Investment Strategist at&nbsp;Bank of America Corp. Analysts at Deutsche AG (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DB#NYSE">DB</a>) early last month referred to the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44756751/full-spectrum-collapse-top-bank-rings-alarm-over-simultaneous-fall-of-us-assets">simultaneous collapse</a> of U.S. equities, the dollar, and Treasury yields as &#8220;uncharted territory,&#8221; which they blamed squarely on markets having &#8220;lost faith in U.S. assets.&#8221;
This comes as the U.S. Treasury Department <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/05/45204657/us-treasury-ramps-up-borrowing-needs-to-514-billion-marking-a-surprising-320-jump-from-its-previous-forecast">ramps up its borrowing</a>, projecting $514 billion in net marketable debt being issued during the current quarter, which is a staggering 317% over its own forecasts two months earlier, at $123 billion.

Economist Peter Schiff is challenging conventional wisdom that China needs the United States more than vice versa, questioning just how essential U.S. consumer demand really is for China&#8217;s manufacturing engine, amid a surge in the global middle-class consumer base.
What Happened: On Sunday, Schiff, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump's tariff policies, pushed back against a growing pro-tariff narrative that claims China has no alternative buyers for its manufactured goods besides American consumers, in a post on X.
&#8220;It's said there's no way China can find buyers for its manufactured goods without U.S. consumers,&#8221; Schiff said. &#8220;But we're only 4% of the world's population.&#8221;

He explains this further by stating that demand in the U.S. is a function of the Dollar&#8217;s exchange rate. &#8220;If the dollar falls relative to other currencies, the purchasing power of Americans is transferred abroad,&#8221; Schiff says. In other words, as the dollar weakens, consumers in other countries gain greater purchasing power.

Recently, Tesla Inc. CEO, Elon Musk, said in a post on X that China was already a <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/04/45124693/elon-musk-reacts-after-ray-dalio-warns-of-us-decline-says-china-has-already-surpassed-america-as-glo">much bigger consumer</a> of manufactured goods than the U.S. He added that &#8220;This year, Chinese consumers will buy more cars than America and Europe combined.&#8221;
This was in response to an article on X by hedge fund manager Ray Dalio, regarding how &#8220;the United States&#8217; role as the world&#8217;s biggest consumer of manufactured goods and greatest producer of debt assets to finance its over-consumption is unsustainable.&#8221;

Analysts at Deutsche Bank AG have called it a &#8220;simultaneous collapse&#8221; of U.S. assets, with stocks, bonds, and the dollar all <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/markets/equities/25/04/44756751/full-spectrum-collapse-top-bank-rings-alarm-over-simultaneous-fall-of-us-assets">falling in tandem</a>.
Schiff has repeatedly argued that a strong yuan and a weaker U.S. dollar may actually benefit Beijing by boosting domestic consumption, countering the narrative that China would <a href="https://benzinga.com/markets/bonds/25/04/44805832/peter-schiff-counters-claims-china-wont-sell-us-treasuries-fearing-strong-currency-but-a-strong-yuan-might-suit-beijing">avoid dumping U.S. Treasuries</a> to protect its own economy.
He also said, early last month, that China might be selling its U.S. Dollar and Treasury holdings, while stocking up on the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/25/04/44844540/peter-schiff-china-is-selling-dollars-and-treasuries-to-buy-euros-and-bunds-crashing-the-markets-not-part-of-a-genius-master-plan">Euro and Bunds</a>. &#8220;This will allow the [European Central Bank] to keep interest rates and inflation low and China to sell more goods to the EU,&#8221; according to Schiff.

Peter Schiff Challenges US Dominance After Elon Musk's China Consumption Narrative — A 50% Drop In The Dollar Could Supercharge China's Global Consumer Base

Traders and macro experts are taking note of the Japanese Finance Minister, Katsunobu Katō&#8216;s subtle reference to his country&#8217;s substantial U.S. Treasury holdings as a possible leverage in the ongoing tariff negotiations with Washington.
What Happened: On Friday, Eliant Capital, a popular macro and event-driven trader, posted on X, drawing attention to the latest remarks from Katō, amid trade negotiations with the U.S.
Speaking in a television interview on Friday, Katō said that the purpose of Japan&#8217;s U.S. Treasury holdings, which is currently the largest in the world, at over $1.13 trillion, is to ensure that there is sufficient liquidity for defending the Yen via interventions, when necessary, according to a report by Reuters.

While there were no outright threats, Kato made a slight reference to the use of treasuries as leverage, saying that &#8220;we need to put all cards on the table in negotiations. It could be among such cards,&#8221; when asked if Japan would be reassuring Washington that it would not be selling its Treasuries.
&#8220;Whether we actually use that card, however, is a different question,&#8221; Kato added, a notable shift from remarks he made just weeks earlier, when he explicitly ruled out using U.S. Treasury holdings in trade negotiations.
In the post, Eliant calls this a dangerous statement, which shows that &#8220;the U.S. doesn&#8217;t hold the cards here,&#8221; before illustrating that if Japan does press its advantage, the negotiations could tilt in its favor.
