The new law will target tax incentives for buying electric vehicles, thereby impeding Bezos' ambitions of disrupting the market. On the other end, hydrocarbon specialist ConocoPhillips (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COP#NYSE">COP</a>) may have just received a cynical lifeline.

Trying to explain the topic of statistics in relation to options trading has always been a bear of an assignment. I believe, though, that it can be best explained in a thought experiment.
Imagine flipping a (fair) coin 100 times every day, Monday through Friday. What you flip on Monday will have no impact on what you flip on Tuesday and so on. Obviously, this is because coin flips are random. Therefore, an observation of the ratio between heads or tails across different intervals should be around 50%.
Similarly, if the market were truly random, we would expect the same outcome. Whether the market was bullish or bearish on Monday would have no impact on Tuesday's result. Looking at the long-side success ratio across different intervals should reveal odds of around 50%. Therefore, no advantage would exist in analyzing price behaviors.
However, that's not what we actually observe in the market. Regarding COP stock, in the trailing two months, the security is printing a "4-6-U" sequence: four up weeks, six down weeks, with a positive trajectory across the 10-week period. Unusually, while the balance of distributive sessions outweighs accumulative, the overall trajectory is positive. It's a rare sequence, having only materialized nine times since January 2019.

But different sequences featuring various arrangements of accumulation and distribution frequencies feature vastly different probabilities.
It just so happens that with COP stock, the 4-6-U sequence tends to yield better results for bullish speculators. Thus, intrepid options traders can potentially exploit this edge.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading">An Aggressive Strategy For The Hard-Nosed Speculator</h2>
For those who don't mind taking big risks, the 95/99 bull call spread expiring Aug. 1 could be enticing. This transaction involves buying the $95 call and simultaneously selling the $99 call, for a net debit paid of $167 (the most that can be lost in the trade). Should COP stock rise through the short strike price ($99) at expiration, the maximum reward is $233, a payout of roughly 140%.
Given the median bullish response to the 4-6-U sequence, that would put COP stock over the $99 level, perhaps in a week or two. Therefore, the Aug. 1 expiration date provides an additional time cushion to account for unexpected turbulence.
In addition, the above trade is compelling because, as a baseline, the chance that COP stock will be profitable over any random week is 52.2% (since January 2019). Thus, the flashing of the quantitative signal incentivizes a debit-based strategy.

Options Corner: Why ConocoPhillips May Have Received A Contrarian Lifeline

U.S. stocks were little changed on Tuesday as investors stayed cautious following a series of letters from the White House to major trading partners, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/tariffs">outlining sweeping new tariffs. </a>
The real market action unfolded in commodities, with copper surging 10% after President Donald Trump announced a 50% tariff on copper imports starting today.
The industrial metal jumped to $5.52 per pound, hitting a new all-time high and marking its biggest one-day gain since October 2008.
During a Cabinet meeting, Trump stated: "Some letters are at a 60%, 70% rate.&#8221; He said to be announcing new tariff measures on pharmaceuticals — possibly a 200% tariff.
He added that trade relations with China have been "very fair" recently, noting a strong working relationship.
While Trump reiterated openness to trade negotiations, he emphasized that the U.S. will not extend the August deadline for reciprocal tariffs to take effect.
Commenting on the European Union, Trump said: "The EU has been speaking to us. President von der Leyen has been very nice lately, but they've treated us badly until recently. We're probably two days away from sending the EU letter. A letter is a deal."
At 1:40 p.m. ET, the S&amp;P 500 was flat at 6,220, the Nasdaq 100 gained 0.1% to 22,710, while small caps led the way with the Russell 2000 rising 0.9%.
Energy stocks outperformed as oil prices climbed 1.4% for a second straight session, topping $68 — a two-week high.
Treasury yields also moved higher, with the 10-year rising five basis points to 4.43% and the 30-year yield climbing to 4.96%.
The U.S. dollar remained steady, while gold fell 0.8% to $3,308 per ounce. Bitcoin (CRYPTO: <a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/quote/btc/usd">BTC</a>) traded around $109,125.

Exxon Mobil Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XOM#NYSE">XOM</a>) issued a warning on Monday that diminishing oil and natural gas prices might see its second-quarter earnings reduce by approximately $1.5 billion from the first quarter, per a Reuters report. 
That warning has the potential to cascade into <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/etfs">energy-focused ETFs</a>, several of which have enjoyed the fossil fuel rally over the past year.

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Energy ETFs: Still Running Hot Or Just Running On Fumes?</h2>
The Energy Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), with Exxon among its top holdings alongside Chevron Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CVX#NYSE">CVX</a>) has been a favorite among investors throughout much of the year. But that&#8217;s about to change as the next earnings season begins. XLE is off about 0.2% in the past six months, with its performance tracking closely the price action in oil futures.
Other big funds to keep an eye on:
Vanguard Energy ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/VDE#NYSE">VDE</a>): General exposure to U.S. majors like Exxon, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COP#NYSE">COP</a>). Similar to XLE, it&#8217;s being hurt by declining upstream margins, and the stock is down 1% in the past six months.
iShares U.S. Oil &amp; Gas Exploration &amp; Production ETF (BATS:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IEO#BATS">IEO</a>): Provides exposure to more exploration-oriented names, which are more responsive to trends in crude prices. The stock is down 1.2% in the past six months.
Invesco Dynamic Energy Exploration &amp; Production ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/PXE#NYSE">PXE</a>): This actively skewed ETF may experience volatility should earnings from mid-cap energy names follow Exxon&#8217;s decline. Investor inflows into energy ETFs have already begun to show signs of wear. As per ETF.com, XLE <a href="https://www.etf.com/sections/daily-etf-flows/assets-move-industrials-away-energy-flows-shift">experienced </a>net outflows in late June, and further downside surprises from Exxon or its peers would likely accelerate the trend.
The wider macro picture is also something to monitor. With inflation softening and the Federal Reserve looking ahead to potential cuts in rates before year&#8217;s end, demand for risky commodities and the ETFs that follow them may fade. The search for yield or stability might instead send capital into dividend-rich spaces, utilities, or even battered tech names that are rising on AI hope.
Not all are yet willing to throw in the towel on energy. According to a recent Reuters <a href="https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/geopolitical-tensions-nudge-oil-outlook-higher-demand-concerns-persist-2025-06-30/">poll</a>, some market participants believe supply discipline by OPEC+ and geopolitical risk can hold up oil prices in the second half of the year.
