Dip-buying remained absent in early Friday trading in New York, with Wall Street deep in the red as global trade war fears continued to escalate, despite the March jobs report showed continued signs of <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/economics/macro-economic-events/25/04/44645518/strong-jobs-report-offers-hope-but-will-it-be-enough-to-counter-tariff-turmoil">U.S. labor market resilience. </a>
The U.S. economy added 228,000 jobs in March—the strongest gain since December 2024—sharply beating expectations of 135,000, according to figures released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Still, the report did little to calm nerves. Investors fear it may be the last strong print for a while, with the economic impact of rising tariffs expected to seep into the data in the coming months.
The unemployment rate ticked up just 0.1 percentage points to 4.2%, remaining low by historical standards, while wage growth broadly aligned with forecasts. Average hourly earnings rose 0.3% month-over-month and 3.8% year-over-year.
Wall Street remained deep in the red after China announced a retaliatory 34% tariff on U.S. goods—matching the rate imposed by President Donald Trump on Wednesday—intensifying fears of a full-blown trade war.
Trump took to Truth Social on Friday. "Great job numbers, far better than expected. It's already working. Hang tough, we can't lose!"
He added. "China played it wrong, they panicked," and reassured investors: "This is a great time to get rich—richer than ever before!"
Investors are now on edge, awaiting remarks from Fed Chair Jerome Powell at 11:25 a.m. ET on Friday, hoping for any hint of a dovish shift in policy tone.
<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Wall Street In Bloodbath: Could Powell Halt The Bleeding? </h3>
Here's how the key benchmarks moved at the open:

<li>S&amp;P 500, tracked by the SPDR S&amp;P 500 ETF Trust (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SPY#NYSE">SPY</a>), was down 2.9% by 9:55 a.m. in New York.</li>
<li>Dow Jones Industrial Average, tracked by the SPDR Dow Jones Industrial Average ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DIA#NYSE">DIA</a>), fell 2.6%, officially entering correction territory after falling more than 10% from its late-2024 peak.</li>
<li>Nasdaq-100, tracked by the Invesco QQQ Trust Series 1 (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/QQQ#NASDAQ">QQQ</a>), fell 2.9%, hitting a 20% decline from all-time highs, entering a bear market. </li>
<li>Russell 2000, represented by the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/IWM#NYSE">IWM</a>), fell 4.1%. </li>

Every sector traded in the red, with heaviest losses concentrated in Energy&nbsp;Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLE#NYSE">XLE</a>), down 5%, and Financial Select Sector SPDR Fund (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/XLF#NYSE">XLF</a>), down 4%. 
While stocks continued to slump, bonds attracted haven flows. Yields on 10-year Treasury notes fell by 10 basis points to 3.94%. The popular iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TLT#NASDAQ">TLT</a>) rose 1.5%.

It's not a coincidence that there is resistance around $170.50. As you can see on the chart below, this level was support in November. Then it was support in January and February.

Price levels that had previously been support can convert into resistance. This is a common occurrence not just in the stock market, but in all financial markets.
It is due to human emotion.
Many of the investors and traders who bought shares of Discover while it was at support were happy when the stock rallied soon after. They thought their decision to buy was a good one.
But when the support broke in early March, many of them came to regret buying because when this happened their winning positions turned into losing ones. Some decided to hold onto their shares but they also decided that if they could eventually sell them at breakeven, they would.
As a result, when Discover returned back up to this price they placed sell orders. The large concentration of these orders converted the support level into resistance.
If a stock is rallying and someone is trying to determine at what price to sell at, placing their orders at a price that had previously been support would be a logical thing to do. There is a good chance it will become resistance.

According to the largest provider of private-label credit cards in the U.S., consumers — pressured by years of persistent inflation — are reducing spending as the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/government/regulations/25/03/44475192/consumer-confidence-falls-to-lowest-since-2022-as-inflation-tariff-worries-grow">economic outlook worsens</a>.
What To Know: Synchrony Financial's (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SYF#NYSE">SYF</a>) chief credit officer Max Axler told Reuters that while most borrowers continue repaying loans, spending has dipped across income levels. 
&#8220;Purchase volumes have gone down across the industry as consumers across all income groups become more thoughtful about spending,&#8221; Axler said.

The latest data released by the Consumer Confidence Board on Tuesday showed that pessimism about the economic future is gripping American consumers. The Consumer Confidence Index fell 7.2 points in March to 92.9, its fourth consecutive monthly decline and the lowest reading since late 2022. 
According to recent Federal Reserve data, <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/econ-s/25/03/44439342/are-us-consumers-starting-to-crack-pessimism-loan-defaults-bargain-hunting-rise">delinquencies</a> on auto loans, credit cards, and home credit lines have increased, and economists warn that President Donald Trump's tariffs may exacerbate price pressures. 
Consumers may soon face additional financial strain as student loan servicers resume reporting delinquencies to credit bureaus. The process, which began in mid-February 2025, could worsen already stretched household finances.
&#8220;For the first time in five years, federal student loan delinquencies will start to reappear on credit files, and we expect a lot of consumers to be stretched due to this,&#8221; Rikard Bandebo, chief economist at VantageScore, told Reuters. 
&#8220;We expect delinquencies to go up as a result of it at a time when consumer debt is already high,&#8221; Bandebo added.
Concerns about consumer strength have also weighed on financial stocks. Shares of Discover Financial Services (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DFS#NYSE">DFS</a>) have shed nearly 10% over the past month, and Capital One Financial Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>) are down 6% over the same period.

As tax season <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/topic/taxes">kicks into high gear</a>, one analyst noted an increase in tax refunds that could leave taxpayers with more cash as they head into spring.
Bank of America analyst Mihir Bhatia analyzed consumer finances as we move into the final weeks of tax season.
Bhatia noted a continued increase in tax refunds by the Internal Revenue Service through 2025. Year-to-date, tax refunds are running 6% higher than they did in 2024, ahead of last year for the third straight week. This year&#8217;s average refund amount is $3,324, up 5.7% from last year.
&#8220;Higher aggregate refunds should be a tailwind for consumers, particularly lower income consumers who use tax refunds for debt paydown and big-ticket purchases,&#8221; the analyst said. &#8220;Total amount refunded running ahead on a y/y basis, well into tax season, is a positive sign for consumer balance sheets.&#8221;
Bhatia said Synchrony Financial (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/SYF#NYSE">SYF</a>), Bread Financial Holdings Inc (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BFH#NYSE">BFH</a>) and Capital One Financial Corp (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>) are the financial services companies &#8220;most exposed to consumers who will utilize tax refunds to pay down debt and for down payments on big-ticket purchases.&#8221; Synchrony and Bread specialize in private-label credit cards at retailers.
Despite President Donald Trump&#8216;s insinuations to cut back on government assistance program funding, the analyst believes government transfer payments will tick up in 2025. This increase will be driven by social security payments rather than relief for younger individuals.
&#8220;We estimate US consumers to receive $70B more in government transfer payments in 2025 vs. 2024, driven by higher social security payments, slightly offset by an increase in student loan payments and lower SNAP payments,&#8221; Bhatia said. &#8220;Overall, while the net impact is more money in the hands of consumers, it appears the benefit would be concentrated among social security recipients, while younger individuals (student loan payments) could face some incremental pressure.&#8221;

New testimony reveals the Donald <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/news/25/02/44028664/trump-says-he-shut-down-the-ultra-left-cfpb-after-bankers-and-loan-officers-called-him-almost-crying">Trump administration planned to fire</a> &#8220;the majority&#8221; of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau&#8217;s employees before a federal judge intervened, according to <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/cfpb-official-testifies-doges-chaotic-attempts-dismantle-agency/story?id=119651855">ABC News</a>.
The agency&#8217;s chief operating officer, Adam Martinez, testified in court for six hours about the dismantling of the financial watchdog, providing an inside look at the confusion that followed when the Department of Government Efficiency took control of the agency in early February, ABC reported.
&#8220;I was having a hard time processing what was happening,&#8221; Martinez told the court, describing how officials canceled contracts only to hurriedly reinstate some after realizing certain functions were legally required.

Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who temporarily halted the takeover in February, characterized the approach as &#8220;shoot first and ask questions later&#8221; during Monday&#8217;s hearing as she considers issuing a preliminary injunction to prevent further dismantling of the agency.
The turmoil began when acting director Russell Vought ordered CFPB&#8217;s roughly 1,700 employees to &#8220;stand down from performing any work task&#8221; without explicit clearance and closed the agency&#8217;s Washington offices, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/05/trump-administration-plans-to-wind-down-the-cfpb.html">according to CNBC</a>.&nbsp;
About 200 probationary employees were dismissed immediately.

Consumer advocates warn that weakening the CFPB leaves Americans vulnerable to financial industry abuses. Created after the 2008 financial crisis, the agency has secured $20 billion in relief for consumers, <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/trump-consumer-financial-protection-bureau-what-is-the-cfpb-refunds/">according to CBS News</a>, and imposed $5 billion in penalties against businesses violating protection laws.
&#8220;If you have a mortgage or a bank account or a credit card—and virtually everybody's got a credit report—the lack of a watchdog to make sure that you are protected and safe in your financial activities is going to have devastating effects,&#8221; Lauren Saunders, National Consumer Law Center associate director, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/05/trump-administration-plans-to-wind-down-the-cfpb.html">told CNBC</a>.
Several consumer protections now hang in limbo. According to CNBC, the CFPB has already dropped four lawsuits against financial firms, including one against Capital One (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/COF#NYSE">COF</a>) for allegedly misleading customers about savings account interest rates. Planned payouts to consumers—including $100 million for student loan borrowers—are on hold.

Martinez testified that some critical services were nearly lost during the takeover. &#8220;There were a couple of high-priority issues that would have been devastating had it stopped,&#8221; he said, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/cfpb-official-testifies-doges-chaotic-attempts-dismantle-agency/story?id=119651855">according to ABC</a>, expressing concern about the Consumer Response Center, which handles public complaints against financial institutions.
The Trump administration maintains it aims to &#8220;right size&#8221; the agency rather than eliminate it entirely, and has nominated a permanent director, <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2025/03/05/trump-administration-plans-to-wind-down-the-cfpb.html">according to CNBC</a>. However, Martinez acknowledged discussing mass terminations despite the court&#8217;s order, saying &#8220;there really isn&#8217;t going to be a CFPB now&#8221; when &#8220;ripping out a number of people and functions.&#8221;
Financial experts warn that without robust CFPB oversight, consumers must become their own watchdogs, checking credit reports and bank statements more diligently.
&#8220;Consumers don&#8217;t take the time to read the fine print,&#8221; Mark Hamrick, an analyst at Bankrate, told CNBC. &#8220;That&#8217;s why we have regulators, to do the work that consumers can&#8217;t do themselves.&#8221;
