<a href="https://www.benzinga.com/analyst-stock-ratings/analyst/628b6bab3547bd000104dc00/mike-genovese">Analyst Mike Genovese</a> reaffirmed a Neutral rating while cutting the price target from $79 to $73.
Ciena's healthy quarterly results were highlighted by strong orders, backlog build and gross margins, Genovese said. He added that the company's revenue guidance for the fiscal second quarter was not as strong as the beat.
Management maintained the full-year gross margin guidance at 42%-44% despite the first-quarter gross margins of 44.7%, which exceeded consensus by 270 basis points, the analyst stated.

Ciena Corp. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CIEN#NYSE">CIEN</a>) reported a fiscal first-quarter 2025 revenue growth of 3.3% year-on-year to $1.07 billion, beating the <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/25/03/b44242752/ciena-reports-fiscal-first-quarter-2025-financial-results" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate of $1.05 billion</a>.
The American telecommunications networking equipment and software services supplier reported adjusted EPS of $0.64,&nbsp;beating the&nbsp;<a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/calendars/earnings" rel="noreferrer noopener">analyst consensus estimate of $0.41</a>. The stock price gained after the report.

Margins:&nbsp;The adjusted gross margin declined by 100 bps to 44.7%, and the adjusted operating margin decreased by 90 bps to 12.3%. Two 10%-plus customers represented a total of 26.1% of revenue.
Ciena held $1.32 billion in cash and equivalents and generated $103.7 million in operating cash flow.
During the quarter, the company bought back approximately 1.0 million shares of common stock for an aggregate price of $79.2 million.
CEO Gary Smith said that Ciena is well-positioned to benefit from the global investment in networks that scale for cloud and AI.
Ciena stock surged over 27% in the last 12 months. U.S. stock futures rose on Tuesday following Monday&#8217;s heavy selloff. Futures of all four benchmark indices surged in premarket trading.
On Monday, the Nasdaq 100 index fell 12.56%, while the S&amp;P 500 dropped 8.67% from its previous high. While Nasdaq 100 had entered the correction zone last week, S&amp;P 500 was nearing the territory.
The selloff followed President Donald Trump&#8216;s comments from Sunday, where he didn&#8217;t rule out the possibility of a recession. He also said that the economy was undergoing "a period of transition,&#8221; as his tariff battle against major trading partners continued.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield stood at 4.20%, while the two-year yield was at 3.89%. According to the CME Group's FedWatch <a href="https://www.cmegroup.com/markets/interest-rates/cme-fedwatch-tool.html">tool</a>, there is a 95% chance that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates unchanged for the March meeting.

On Monday, U.S. stock market saw significant losses, particularly in consumer discretionary, information technology, and communication services sectors.
In contrast, utilities and energy sectors saw gains. This sector-driven decline contributed to the Dow dipping 890 points.
Overall market weakness followed a tough week, with the S&amp;P 500 down 3.1%. Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) and Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) shares also experienced notable drops.

Insights From Analysts
After entering correction territory last week, the Nasdaq 100 fell 3.81% on Monday, confirming a key trend highlighted by Jason Goepfert.
Historically, a 3.5%+ drop following a correction and a 200-day average breach has led to a bear market, according to Goepfert.
Goepfert reaffirmed his assumptions and said that a "bad scenario," had been triggered and it was "Not the best sign for bulls."

However, not all analysts believed that the indices are headed toward a bear market.
Mona Mahajan, the investment strategist at Edward Jones, calmed the investors after Monday&#8217;s selloff and said that pullbacks are normal and the possibility of a bear market was not confirmed.
&#8220;Investors are understandably nervous – the economy seems to be softening as tariffs and government policy uncertainty remain elevated. But keep in mind that in any given year, one to three pullbacks are normal, in the 5% to 15% range, and historically these have led to buying opportunities. Especially because we don&#8217;t yet see a recession, the likelihood of a deep or prolonged bear market is not as high.&#8221;
Sentimentrader&#8217;s Jay Kaeppel said that the U.S. stock market is only &#8220;sorta, kinda&#8221; oversold, citing the McClellan Oscillator&#8217;s data for the S&amp;P 500.

U.S. stocks settled lower on Monday, with the Dow Jones index dipping around 900 points during the session.
Stocks also recorded losses last week, with the S&amp;P 500 falling 3.1% during the week. The Dow declined 2.4%, while the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 3.5% during the week.
Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>) shares dipped over 15%, while Meta Platforms, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/META#NASDAQ">META</a>) lost more than 4% on Monday.
President Donald Trump seemed to acknowledge the possibility of a U.S. recession in an interview with Fox News on Sunday when he referred to the current economic situation as a &#8220;period of transition&#8221; further fueling economic concerns.
On the economic data front, U.S. consumer inflation expectations for the year ahead increased to 3.1% in February from 3% in the prior three months.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with consumer discretionary, information technology and communication services stocks recording biggest losses on Monday. However, utilities and energy stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 890 points to 41,911.71 on Monday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 2.70% to 5,614.56, while the Nasdaq Composite dipped 4% at 17,468.32 during Monday's session.
Investors are awaiting earnings results from DICK&#8217;S Sporting Goods, Inc.
