12 Consumer Discretionary Stocks Moving In Thursday's Pre-Market Session

Every quarter, I track the 13F filings at the SEC. These are the reports filed by money managers of all stripes that show what the funds owned during the most recent quarter. When you compare the current list to the prior quarter, you come away with a clear picture of what institutions are buying for their customers and themselves.
When I started in the business, it took several days past the deadline to get a copy of the filings. I would go through the current and previous filings with a ruler and a yellow highlighter to track the changes. It was laborious but profitable. Today, the filings are made available instantly, and the portfolios and changes are posted to the internet instantly.
The Thundering Herd of Wall Street and the Instant Experts of the Internet will flock to read the filings of the best-known money managers and investors. Obviously, Warren Buffett gets a lot of attention. So do Carl Icahn and Cathie Wood. Bill Ackman also garners some attention. The number of people who dig deeper to find managers that are doing business away from the spotlights and consistently delivering high returns is small.
The famous investors are famous because they did well over time. However, they now manage billions of dollars, and their opportunity set is limited to large-cap stocks. You can do okay with their stocks, but if you want better than okay, you have to dig deeper.
If you joined the circus of Buffettology and just owned the top 20 holdings of Berkshire Hathaway for the last 10 years, you have earned about half the return of the S&amp;P 500. You did much worse as an Icahn clone investor. A very small portion of Klarman&#8217;s fund is invested in stocks these days as he finds bargains in other asset classes like debt and real estate. The stocks Baupost Fund has purchased have not been big winners for the most part.
If you could make the same derivatives bets Bill Ackman made when he made them, you would have done pretty well. If you just bought the stocks he did, you would have lagged the indexes. On the economic data front, U.S. consumer inflation expectations for the year ahead eased to 2.9% in October compared to 3% in each of the prior four months.
The RealClearMarkets/TIPP Economic Optimism Index rose 13.4% in November to a reading of 53.2, recording the highest reading in over three years.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with materials, health care, and real estate stocks recording the biggest losses on Tuesday.
However, information technology and communication services stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.

Insights From Analysts:
Ryan Detrick, chief market strategist at Carson Group, thinks that the Fed has enough room to cut interest rates further without worrying about a surge in inflation. According to him, the "strong productivity" will help keep inflation capped.
"As long as productivity remains strong (like we think it should) the path is there for the Fed to continue to cut interest rates and not worry about inflation soaring back."
However, analysts at BlackRock Investment Institute <a href="https://www.blackrock.com/us/individual/insights/blackrock-investment-institute/weekly-commentary">expressed</a> caution on inflation.
"We focus on U.S. CPI to see if inflation will keep falling toward the Fed's 2% target. Short-term inflation has been decreasing, with immigration boosting the labor supply and cooling wage growth. However, recent services PCE data remains sticky, indicating that inflation may settle above 2% in the medium term."
Over the longer term, though, an aging population could maintain a persistent upward pressure on inflation, the firm said.
Wells Fargo's lead economist Jay Bryson echoed similar sentiments, saying, "The October CPI report will likely support the notion that the last mile of inflation&#8217;s journey back to target will be the hardest."
WisdomTree and Wharton School economist&nbsp;Jeremy Siegel continued to stress that the equity markets have enough gas in them to continue the ongoing bull run.
"The ‘bull market' sentiment remains intact, though valuations remain a watch point," he said, adding that the expectations of "lighter regulations" from President-elect Donald Trump's administration would benefit equities.
"The bull market in stocks looks set to continue, while bonds face a rougher road," Siegel said but noted that the gains that equity investors have been seeing this year are unlikely to repeat in 2025.

Earnings Scheduled For November 13, 2024

The CNN Money Fear and Greed index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Tuesday.
U.S. stocks settled lower on Tuesday, with the S&amp;P 500 and Nasdaq snapping five-session winning streaks.
Shares of Tesla, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/TSLA#NASDAQ">TSLA</a>), which have surged around 31% since Election Day, declined about 6.2% on Tuesday. Trump Media &amp; Technology Group Corp. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/DJT#NASDAQ">DJT</a>) shares also dipped around 9% during the session. Home Depot Inc. (NYSE:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/HD#NYSE">HD</a>) reported better-than-expected third-quarter earnings and lifted its full-year 2024 outlook.
On the economic data front, U.S. consumer inflation expectations for the year ahead eased to 2.9% in October compared to 3% in each of the prior four months. The RealClearMarkets/TIPP Economic Optimism Index rose 13.4% in November to a reading of 53.2, recording the highest reading in over three years.
Most sectors on the S&amp;P 500 closed on a negative note, with materials, health care, and real estate stocks recording the biggest losses on Tuesday. However, information technology and communication services stocks bucked the overall market trend, closing the session higher.
The Dow Jones closed lower by around 382 points to 43,910.98 on Tuesday. The S&amp;P 500 fell 0.29% to 5,983.99, while the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.09% to close at 19,281.40 during Tuesday's session.

At a current reading of 68.7, the index remained in the &#8220;Greed&#8221; zone on Tuesday, versus a prior reading of 68.6.
The Fear &amp; Greed Index is a measure of the current market sentiment. It is based on the premise that higher fear exerts pressure on stock prices, while higher greed has the opposite effect. CyberArk shares rose 4.1% to $313.00 in after-hours trading.</li>
<li>Analysts expect Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/CSCO#NASDAQ">CSCO</a>) to post quarterly earnings at 87 per share on revenue of $13.77 billion. The company will release earnings after the markets close. Cisco shares gained 0.03% to $58.73 in after-hours trading.</li>
<li>Rumble Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/RUM#NASDAQ">RUM</a>) posted downbeat results for the third quarter on Tuesday. The company posted a quarterly loss of 15 cents per share, versus estimates for a loss of 12 cents per share. Rumble shares dipped 10.8% to $6.09 in the after-hours trading session.</li>
