CMS is working to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cms.gov/newsroom/press-releases/biden-harris-administration-takes-next-steps-increase-access-sickle-cell-disease-treatments" rel="noreferrer noopener">engage</a> states and U.S. territories enrolled in the Medicaid Drug Rebate Program, providing technical support and data infrastructure for implementation.
States may apply to participate starting this month, with applications accepted until Feb. 28, 2025.
Over 100,000 individuals in the U.S. live with sickle cell disease, more than half of whom rely on Medicaid. The disease significantly reduces life expectancy and imposes an annual economic burden of nearly $3 billion in healthcare costs.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Lyfgenia and Casgevy in December 2023 as gene therapies targeting <a href="https://www.benzinga.com/general/biotech/23/12/36156713/fda-approves-first-gene-editing-cell-therapy-for-sickle-cell-disease-an-inherited-blood-disorder" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">sickle cell disease</a>.
Launching in January 2025, the model allows states to join until January 2026. States can also apply for optional funding to support implementation.
This initiative aligns with President Biden's 2022 Executive Order to expand access to novel therapies and reduce prescription drug costs. Future expansions of the model may include other cell and gene therapies.

WARNING: HEMATOLOGIC MALIGNANCY Hematologic malignancy, including life-threatening cases of myelodysplastic syndrome, has occurred in patients treated with SKYSONA. Patients have been diagnosed between 14 months and 7.5 years after SKYSONA administration, and the cancers appear to be the result of the SKYSONA lentiviral vector, Lenti-D, integration in proto-oncogenes. Monitor patients closely for evidence of malignancy through complete blood counts at least every 6 months and through assessments for evidence for clonal expansion or predominance at least twice in the first year and annually thereafter; consider bone marrow evaluations as clinically indicated [see Warnings and Precautions (5.1)].

FDA Investigating Serious Risk Of Hematologic Malignancy Following Skysona (Elivaldogene Autotemcel)

On Thursday, Bluebird Bio Inc. (NASDAQ:<a class="ticker" href="https://www.benzinga.com/stock/BLUE#NASDAQ">BLUE</a>) reported a third-quarter EPS loss of 31 cents, compared to a loss of 80 cents a year ago, beating the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.benzinga.com/pressreleases/24/11/b41967541/bluebird-bio-reports-third-quarter-2024-results-and-highlights-operational-progress-and-2024-guida" rel="noreferrer noopener">consensus loss of 36 cents</a>.
The gene therapy company reported sales of $10.6 million, down from $12.39 million, missing the consensus of $18.1 million.
The company&#8217;s cash, cash equivalents, and restricted cash balance were approximately&nbsp;$118.7 million, which is expected to provide a cash runway into the first quarter of 2025.

The company anticipates quarterly cash flow break-even in the second half of 2025, assuming it scales to approximately 40 drug product deliveries per quarter and obtains additional cash resources to extend its runway.
JP Morgan downgraded Bluebird after the third-quarter results. The analyst notes a reduced cash runway to &#8220;into 1Q25&#8221; from &#8220;into 2Q25.&#8221;
JP Morgan highlights that Bluebird did achieve the milestone of its first Lyfgenia infusion during the quarter (and revenue recognition) and continues to increase the pace of patient starts (cell collections) across its portfolio but is doing so against a backdrop of continued negative gross margins.

The analyst writes that the proxy vote did not gather enough support to approve a reverse stock split and increase the number of shares available for issuance. This outcome effectively eliminates equity financing as an option for raising capital.
